Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who sparked outrage with caricatures of the Muslim prophet Muhammad as a dog, has received threats via telephone from Somalia.

Police in Helsingborg in southern Sweden are taking seriously the threats made against Vilks, which come just three days after Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard was subjected to an axe attack at his home in Denmark.

The first of two phone calls to Vilks came on Monday morning. A subsequent check by the Swedish artist revealed that the call originated in Somalia, where the Islamic militant group al-Shabaab has gained increasing influence in the war torn country.

Al-Shabaab is also believed to have ties to al-Qaeda.

In the last month, al-Shabaab supporters who reportedly used to live in Denmark have killed at least 22 people, including three ministers, in a suicide bomb attack carried out in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

According to Vilks, the man who threatened him spoke Swedish.

“The man, who spoke accented Swedish, asked me if I knew about what happened in Denmark and to the artist Kurt Westergaard. I said I certainly did,” Vilks told the Helsingborgs Dagblad newspaper.

“The man then explained that they were out after more and that they would soon come for me. I told them they were welcome,” said Vilks.

According to Patrik Peter, a spokesman for Swedish security service Säpo, the incident is being investigated by local police.

“It may be that the police will ask for our help in which case we’ll obviously do what we can,” Peter told the TT news agency.

The Helsingborg police have refused to comment on the incident.

“I have no comment whatsoever on how our investigation of the threat is being carried out,” police spokesperson Göran Hassel told TT.

Westergaard was one of the Danish artists who drew cartoons of the Muslim prophet Muhammad for Denmark’s Jyllandsposten newspaper. Westergaard’s drawing portrayed Muhammad with a bomb in his turban.

Denmark’s Iran ralley, commie free!

Thanks to Europenews.dk we see that those protesting for regime change in Iran from Copenhagen actually seem to be orders of magnitude smarter than the ones in last week’s rally in Ottawa. Below, a snip of the Europenews article but pop over and read it all.

Regime Change in Iran – Rally in Copenhagen

By Henrik R Clausen 2 January 2010

Today, January 2nd 2010, protesters in 28 cities stood up against the brutal Iranian regime, for freedom of expression, freedom of religion and the separation of the Iranian state from Islam. And, not least, for regime change in Iran and for holding the current rulers accountable for their crimes. Pictures and impressions are from the rally in Copenhagen, where 200-250 Danes and Iranians participated in the rally.

(Note: More pictures to be posted later. They can be seen at Facebook.)

The rally was held at 17:30 in the evening, well after nightfall in Denmark. It was encouraged to hold torches as well as Iranian flags. The rally blended well with the lights in Rådhuspladsen (Town Hall Square) in Copenhagen. The thermometer (the red column in the background) shows minus 4 degrees centigrade.

The flag of Iran sports a lion and a sun, not a halfmoon or the abstract symbol of the Islamic Republic. Islamic invaders stole the country many centuries ago, and crushed a proud, independent culture. Iranians want their country and their freedom back, including freedom of religion.

The banners read:
Stop the killings – Stop the torture – Stop the disappearances – We are all together
Support the public demand for: Freedom & Equality in IRAN.

Diana West: Kurt Westergaard cannot stop sharia alone

When Kurt Westergaard came to the United States for a speaking tour on September 30, the fourth anniversary of the publication in Jyllands Posten of the Danish Mohammed cartoons, a number of reporters contacted me for information because Kurt’s trip was sponsored by the International Free Press Society. (Related stories here.)

Boiler plate, stuff, mainly — where’s he going, to whom is he speaking, a few basics about free speech. But I had a question for these reporters, too. Will you run the Westergaard Mohammed? Will you print the cartoon Kurt Westergaard drew, all in a day’s work, when Jyllands Posten editor Flemming Rose asked him for a Mohammed cartoon as part of a newspaper feature showcasing 12  Mohammed cartoons from 12 Danish artists commissioned to demonstrate that Denmark, free Denmark, was not under, beholden or intimidated by Islamic law?

First response from the ladies and gennemen of the Fourth Estate: nervous laughter.

Then: Oh, I’ll have to ask my editor about that….

Surprise, surprise, the Westergaard cartoon didn’t see media light of day during Kurt’s entire trip. American media disgraced themselves by covering Westergaard, his cartoon, the threats to his life, the barbarous Islamic reaction from the highest reaches of the Islamic diplomatic world to the Islamic street protests that resulted in loss of life, Kurt’s principles, free speech — all without ever showing readers and viewers the cartoon itself. (One exception — the Chicago Sun Times, which ran a photo of Kurt holding a laptop displaying the cartoon.)

Kurt Westergaard, 75, was almost murdered last night by an axe- knife- or hammer-wielding 27-year-old Muslim from Somalia who broke into his home. Kurt managed to get to his safe room and police arrived very quickly, shooting the would-be assassin in the course of a struggle.  News reports tells us Kurt is safe.

Safe. Kurt isn’t safe. Nor will he be, nor any of us be, “safe” until Islamic law is stopped in the West, its deeply advanced tentacles eradicated. Because don’t think it isn’t here. Sharia is here and in force.

To measure the extent, just watch the “free press” cover Kurt’s latest (and closest) brush with sharia-sanctioned death, and count how many times that coverage is accompanied by a picture of Kurt’s cartoon. Any media outlet that runs the cartoon is not under Islamic law. Any media outlet that doesn’t is under Islamic law.

One old Dane, however courageous, however strong, can’t stop sharia alone.

New game: What do these events have in Common?

Here is a one minute BBC clip of the days news. The object of the game is, to guess what all three events have in common. The winner may actually get to save his family,, his civilization and even his history as a people and culture. The loser? well I’m not sure what they get exactly but I know exactly what the last thing they ever hear is.

Danish police shoot intruder at cartoonist’s home

Kurt Westergaard Sept 2006

Kurt Westergaard has had a price on his head since 2006

Danish police have shot and wounded a man at the home of Kurt Westergaard, whose cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad sparked an international row.

Mr Westergaard was at home in Aarhus when a man broke in and threatened him. He pressed a panic button and police entered the house and shot the man.

Danish officials said the intruder was a 28-year-old Somali linked to the radical Islamist al-Shabab militia.

The cartoon, printed in 2005, prompted violent protests the following year.

One of 12 cartoons published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten, it depicted the Prophet Muhammad with a bomb in his turban.

In 2006 the paper apologised for the cartoons, but other European media reprinted them.

Danish embassies were then attacked by Muslims around the world and dozens killed in riots.

Mr Westergaard went into hiding amid threats to his life, but emerged last year saying he wanted to live as normal a life as possible.

His house has been heavily fortified and is under close police protection.

Mr Westergaard told Jyllands-Posten that the man had entered his house by smashing a window with a hammer and had shouted in broken English that he wanted to kill him.

Anti-Danish protest in Pakistan 2006

The cartoons prompted anti-Danish outrage across the Muslim world

He said he had grabbed his five-year-old granddaughter and run to a specially designed panic room where he raised the alarm.

Mr Westergaard told the newspaper he was shocked that his granddaughter had witnessed the attack.

He has now been taken to a safe location, but said defiantly that he would be back, the newspaper reported.

Jakob Scharf, who heads the Danish intelligence service Pet, said the attack was “terror related” and that the suspected assailant has close contacts to Somalia’s al-Shabab group.

Police said he was shot in the knee and the shoulder after threatening officers who tried to arrest him. Preben Nielsen of Aarhus police, said the man was seriously hurt but his life was not in danger.

The BBC’s Malcolm Brabant, who interviewed Mr Westergaard when he emerged from hiding, says the incident will raise questions about security measures put in place by the Danish secret service to protect the artist.

Islamic militants have placed a $1m price on Mr Westergaard’s head.

Although he is one of 12 cartoonists whose drawings of the Prophet were published in Jyllands-Posten, he has the highest profile, our correspondent says.

The Copenhagen Choo-Choo

Now THIS is how you treat violent protestors with a profound sense of entitlement. Canadian authorities take careful note please. I expect to see this the next time a G8 summit happens here in the winter.

Copenhagen Choo-Choo

As everyone who is not a hermit or in solitary confinement already knows, the past few days have witnessed the Great Hope and Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen. Following the usual playbook for such international confabs, a gaggle of anti-globalists, communists, and hard-core anarchists showed up in force to block the streets, break windows, and fight with the police.

The Copenhagen cops employed somewhat different tactics this time when dealing with the troublemakers. Our Danish correspondent Kepiblanc sends this brief report:

As you probably know by now, there’s some sort of UN stunt going on in Copenhagen these days. Such events always attract all sorts of strange people, and this one is no different.

Aside from dignitaries like Mr. Mugabe, Mr. Gha-Daffy, Mr. Adolfinadinnerjacket, and your own Mr. Hussein Oh-Bama, a lot of the usual suspects from the looniesphere have shown up here. Most of them are harmless, naïve fools who like to go picketing and demonstrating against one thing and another, no matter what.

But the ‘international riot crowd’ showed up in force as well. You know, the ‘youths’ who excel in burning cars, smashing windows, throwing cobblestones and Molotov cocktails and one thing and another. In short: behaving, generally…

Normally, rioting and burning a city just leads to the usual chain of events: street havoc and battles with the local cops, followed by whining and legislation about ‘police brutality’. And that’s it, onward to the next city…

Not so this time. When they started throwing fireworks and bricks around, the Danish police acted differently. They immediately surrounded the youths with wagons and cut them off from both ends of a major street.

Then they handcuffed each and every one and placed them in a position where unable to move: the so-called ‘choo-choo train’. After spending four hours sitting on the asphalt, peeing in their pants and screaming — well, not so much about ‘global warming’ (it’s below zero Celsius here) — they were transferred to open cages — Gitmo style — for the night.

So now the ‘youths’ can return to whence they came and tell everyone about the global warming and hot air in Carbonhagen…

Trailer for new film causes riots in Denmark

From Snaphanen

translation from Jyllands Posten:         “Big brothers stopped riot”

Police had to use pepper-spray on a group of youth in Tinbjerg last night. But to the suprise of the police, the trouble was stopped by “big brothers”.

It all started around 20.30 pm, when a group of 15-20 immigrant boys made barricades of containers filled with gasoline.
However they did not succeed in lighttening them, before there was a massive police presence.

The atmosphere was heated and  police had to make two arrests.  Police found two firearms with sharp bullets and a  knife.  More  youngsters adjoined, the atmosphere grew even more tense, when big brothers appeared at the scene. In a mater  of minutes peace was restored, and the  youngsters were send home. Its very unusual for big brothers to stop trouble. “I have  only witnessed it once  before” a police constable says.

In the  area around Sjælør Boulevard there was trouble also. A goup of immigrant boys threw stones while shouting “fuck Denmark”. Police has a theory, as to why it all started. “There  has been this program on Al-Jazeera, and we cannot rule out, that that was the reason.

The program appears to be referring to the imminent release of a film made by the son of a Lebanese Muslim immigrant to Denmark, an immigrant to whom the state gave everything and in return, the son appears to have made a ighly inflamatory documentary about how racist and awful Denmark is to Muslims.

Michael Coren show with Kurt Westergaard and Lars Hedigaard

First time on television in Canada, Kurt Westigaard, creator of the iconic ‘Moetoon’ bomb turban drawing associated with the riots of 2005 speaks. Along with Lars Hedigaard, creator and president of the International Free Press Society, this is an exciting and interesting hour of TV. Sadly, it is also a brave hour of TV. Salutations to Michael Coren for having the raw courage to have this guest as well as giving him a very fair interview. Once not so long ago, it took no courage to interview cartoonists. Now one has to have special security in place.

(As an aside, I made a mistake in the movie editor when I set up this clip so the tops of heads my seem chopped off. This was a technical error on my part and not some kind of prophesy or dark humour.)

Michael Coren: Freedom’s curmudgeonly hero

Posted: October 06, 2009, 9:00 AM by NP Editor

Tonight on my daily television program, The Michael Coren Show, my guest will be a wanted man. Indeed three people were arrested last year for plotting to murder him and he is under constant police protection because his life is under permanent threat. Yet 74-year-old Kurt Westergaard resembles a kindly uncle more than a danger to the state. And truth is, he’s only seen as a danger if it’s an Islamic state. Because this bearded, gentle and disarmingly unassuming man set off an international crisis in 2005 when his cartoon of the prophet Muhammad wearing a bomb as a turban was published in Denmark’s leading newspaper, Jyllands-Posten. The subsequent protests and violence led to more than 100 deaths, attacks on embassies and the storming and burning of Danish and Western buildings throughout the Islamic world.

This was the only television interview he gave in Canada. I’d like to think it’s because I have a known commitment to freedom of speech but, frankly, it’s also because some journalists are frightened of giving him any exposure — we were obliged to record the interview early so as not to publicise his movements because of security concerns. “I’m an old man, I haven’t so much to lose,” he says with a smile when I ask him if he’s ever scared.

Interview with Kurt Westergaard, Toronto Canada

From IFPS

I had the opportunity to spend the day yesterday with several extraordinary men, one of whom, was Kurt Westergaard, the creator of the infamous ‘Moetoon’.

In this interview, I speak at a private house, which is why there is a fair amount of background noise as we prepared dinner after a day of interviews in Toronto, with Kurt, as well as Lars Hedegaard, the creator and president of the Danish Free Press Society, now the International Free Press Society.

Kurt I must say, is a man who history has handed a tough role, and a role which he did not ask for, but accepts with grace, dignity, and a rare humility. I do not get the impression that it was Mr. Westergaards ambition to become a martyr for free speech and to live in a bunker as he does now, or in hiding as he did for years. But he has unflinchingly defended free speech and has not once turned away from his values for the illusion of safety.

Below, is a conversation with Kurt and Lars and their views on freedom of speech, and their recent experience at Yale, a once great institution of western education.
