TORONTO — The signatories of a new letter accusing the Toronto International Film Festival of becoming “complicit in the Israeli propaganda machine” run the gamut from an Oscar-winning actress to a rabble-rousing author to a Talking Head.

More than 50 people have added their name to what’s being called The Toronto Declaration, including musician David Byrne, actors Danny Glover and Jane Fonda, and author Alice Walker.

The letter, drafted by a committee that includes Canadian writer Naomi Klein and Israeli filmmaker Udi Aloni, is the latest move in a controversy that began when Canadian director John Greyson withdrew his short documentary, Covered, from the festival last week. The veteran filmmaker is protesting the festival’s inaugural City to City Spotlight on Tel Aviv, a 10-movie program that TIFF’s website promises will “explore the evolving urban experience while presenting the best documentary and fiction films from and about a selected city.” This year is Tel Aviv’s 100th anniversary.

Greyson penned an open letter to festival co-directors Piers Handling and Cameron Bailey, as well as to Noah Cowan, artistic director of the under-construction Bell Lightbox, blasting the initiative.

The declaration states that while the signatories are not protesting the individual filmmakers participating in the program and do not seek to exclude Israeli films from the festival, “in the wake of this year’s brutal assault on Gaza, we object to the use of such an important international festival in staging a propaganda campaign on behalf of what South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former U.S. president Jimmy Carter and UN General Assembly President Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann have all characterized as an apartheid regime.” Continue Reading →

Israel: UN witholding details of Iran’s nuclear program

The Foreign Ministry on Saturday issued a statement accusing the International Atomic Energy Agency of not publishing information gathered against Iran’s nuclear energy program.

The statement alleges that an IAEA report on Iran’s nuclear energy program released on Friday “does not reflect the entirety of the information the IAEA holds on Iran’s efforts to advance their military program, nor their continued efforts to conceal and deceive and their refusal to cooperate with the IAEA and the international community.”

According to the statement, Israel expects the international community “to quickly take significance steps to cancel Iran’s nuclear weapons program.”

The Foreign Ministry statement comes ahead of next month’s annual IAEA committee meeting in Vienna and a special UN Security Council meeting to discuss Iran’s nuclear program.

The statement also accuses Iran of “foot-dragging” and continuing to ignore IAEA questions about its nuclear program and “continues to avoid adhering to Security Council demands to stop enriching uranium.” Continue Reading →

I doubt at this point anyone would be surprised that The U.N. would appoint someone who openly denies Israel the right to defend itself against rocket attacks to a commission to determine the legality of events in operation Cast Lead.

A European non-government organization has called on the UN to remove a British academic from its recent inquiry into alleged human rights violations in Gaza, over statements made rejecting Israel’s right to self-defense against rocket attacks.

Geneva-based UN Watch submitted a 28-page legal brief to the UN last week calling on the UN fact-finding mission to disqualify London School of Economics law professor Christine Chinkin over prior statements she made that bring her impartiality in question. Iran ‘minister’ on Interpol list

Vahidi nom. Iran def. min.BBC NEWS…Iran’s defence minister-designate is on an Interpol “wanted” list over the 1994 bombing of a Jewish centre in Argentina, the agency has confirmed.

It says it has had a “red notice” for Ahmad Vahidi since 2007 over the Buenos Aires attack that killed 85 people.

Interpol uses red notices to inform its 187 member countries that an arrest warrant has been issued for an individual by a judicial authority.

Israel and Argentina have expressed concern over Mr Vahidi’s nomination.

“This is yet another of [Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad’s actions that prove he is a person you cannot deal with,” Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Andy David told Bloomberg.

“It’s significant, this nomination, but no surprising,” Argentine prosecutor Alberto Nisman told the Associated Press.

“Iran has always protected terrorists, giving them government posts, but I think never one as high as this one,” he said.

Tehran rejected the criticism as a “Zionist plot”.

Iranian lawmakers still have to confirm the 21-member cabinet proposed on Wednesday by Mr Ahmadinejad – the declared winner of June’s disputed presidential elections.

But the nomination of Mr Vahidi is another sign of Mr Ahmadinejad’s defiance of the West, the BBC’s Caroline Hawley says.

‘Key participant’

Interpol says that Mr Vahidi has been on its “red notice” list since November 2007.

The move to publish the notice for Mr Vahidi – along with five other people – followed a request by the Argentine authorities.

Mr Vahidi – who was deputy defence minister during Mr Ahmadinejad’s first term in office – is accused of involvement in the bombing of the Israeli-Argentine Mutual Association (AMIA) building in Buenos Aires.

It was the worst attack on a Jewish target outside Israel since World War II.

Mr Nisman said that Mr Vahidi, who led a unit of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard known as the Quds Force at the time of the attack, was accused of “being a key participant in the planning and of having made the decision to go ahead with the attack” against the AMIA.

“It has been demonstrated that Vahidi participated in and approved of the decision to attack AMIA during the meeting in Iraq on 14 August 1993”, the prosecutor said.

Iran on Friday rejected Argentina’s allegations.

“How come they didn’t bring it up in the past?” President Ahmadinejad’s press adviser, Ali Akbar Javanfekr, told the AFP.

“Mr Vahidi was a deputy defence minister and this is very senior political position. Therefore it seems that this is a new trick being planned and is basically a Zionist plot,” he added.

Interpol says it uses “red notices” – or international-wanted persons alerts – to inform its members that an arrest warrant has been issued for an individual by a judicial authorities.

Interpol says that the individuals concerned are wanted by national jurisdictions and Interpol’s role is to assist national police.

It stresses that its notices are not international warrants.

Bethlehem – Ma’an – Websites linked to Al-Qaeda criticized Hamas’ operation against the Salafi group Jund Ansar Allah (Soldiers for God) in the Gaza Strip on Friday, accusing the de facto government of “abdicating from Islam,” CNN Arabic reported on Wednesday night.

The unnamed websites, which the report said were closely affiliated with Al-Qaeda, urged the group’s followers to take action against Hamas. They specifically called on Osama Bin Laden and his assistant Ayman Al-Zawahiri.

A statement on the website from unnamed sources, groups expressed condolences for the death of Sheikh Abdul Latif Moussa, the leader of Jund Ansar Allah. Moussa lead hundreds of supporters to a Rafah mosque on Friday and declared the area an “Islamic emirate.” Hamas-allied fe facto government police and members of Hamas’ armed wing said they were forced to react to the group when shots were fired in a civilian area. Clashes broke out culminating in 24 dead including six government officers, six civilians including two young girls, and 12 Jund Ansar Allah gunmen.

The Al-Qaeda groups’ statement called Moussa a “martyr,” saying he was killed by “the bullets and the rockets of Hamas government.” Hamas sources said the ultra-Islamist leader detonated explosives that were strapped to his body.

The statement linked the Hamas action, termed a “massacre” against Jund Ansar Allah, with clashes that took place last summer between Hamas police and members of another radical group, the Army of Islam, in the Ash-Shyjayyiah area of Gaza City.

Hamas was further accused of working against Islamic groups and “Serving the Jews who occupy Palestine, and the Christians who fight against Iraq, Afghanistan Somalia and Chechnya.”

Tundra Tabloids seems to have the best work on this issue. When one adds up a few things that seems to be happening now in the world, the picture is certainly bleak for any western standards of evidence or attempt at objectivity in reporting. Certainly bleak if you can be identified as Jewish. It would appear that methodological thought itself is under attack in favor of political correctness and fairly primitive games of imbued significance.

‘I say this Kleenex is holy. Its the Holy Kleenex of Antioch!’ If you do not treat it as I say you must, you have committed a blaspheme and you must be punished to death.’

The instinct to ask what makes it holy and why it deserves reverence seems to be fading from the worlds cultures leaving us all with dhimmitude of one form or another, at the mercy of whoever has the raw numbers to make politicians kowtow to their irrational rules and customs. Not all Swedes are pleased with the Aftonbladet’s recent display of anti-Semitism under the guise of criticism of Israel. The Tundra Tabloids’ Swedish source for the recent information, Reinhard, says that the Swedish blogosphere, and some of the media, are busy justifiably raking the Aftonbladet over the coals for it role in proving that, as Barry Rubin puts it: “Antisemitism Is Anti-Zionism and Is Now Acceptable.”

The Swedish paper Svenska Dagbladet, in one of its own blogs, mentions a press release issued by the Swedish Embassy in Israel, that distances the government and the Swedish people from the offensive article published in the Aftonbladet:

Swedish Embassy in Israel has today sent out a press release that points out that Aftonbladet’s culture page does not speak for all Swedes. It is strange that the Swedish Government through the embassy marks its rejection and meddles in what a Swedish newspaper chooses to publish. In Sweden, as in Israel, there is freedom of expression. And given that Israel is a tolerant and open society it is difficult to imagine that the article would provoke the same type of reactions that Muhammed cartoon made in the Arab world, is why the press release is really quite unnecessary. But it is still worth reading.

On August 17 the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet published an article about alleged organ handling in Israel. “The article in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet is as shocking and appalling to us Swedes, as it is to Israeli citizens. We share the dismay expressed by Israeli government representatives, media and the Israeli public. This Embassy cannot but clearly distance itself from it.

“Just as in Israel, freedom of the press prevails in Sweden,” concluded the statement. “However, freedom of the press and freedom of expression are freedoms which carry a certain responsibility. It falls on the editor-in-chief of any given newspaper.”

This is such an egregious lie it will likely work. Just FYI, the term ‘Wailing Wall’ was coined by Christians who saw the religious Jews dipping in prayer at the properly named ‘Western Wall’ of the original temple of the old testament and as it appeared to them as if they where crying and lamenting due to the dipping. bowing and praying, they called it the ‘Wailing Wall’ and it stuck. So its funny that these Muslims accuse the Jews of calling it that to somehow make it Jewish.

Dutch university fires Islamic scholar Ramadan

The Jerusalem Post… A Dutch university fired Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan on Tuesday for hosting a show on Iran’s state television, which the school said could be seen as endorsing the regime.

Ramadan – known as a reformist who condemns terrorism, seeks to modernize sharia law and urges Muslims living in Europe to integrate – has recently been criticized in the Dutch press for allegedly voicing more conservative views for Muslim audiences than he does in the West.

Both the City of Rotterdam and Erasmus University dismissed Ramadan from his positions as “integration adviser” and professor, saying his program “Islam & Life” airing on Iran’s Press TV is “irreconcilable” with his duties in Rotterdam.

Ramadan “continued to participate in this program even after the elections in Iran, when authorities there hard-handedly stifled the freedom of expression,” Rotterdam and the university said in a joint statement.
