MOGADISHU: Somalia’s al-Shabaab militants had ordered schools in Jowhar town to stop using bells to signal the end of classes because they sounded like those of Christian churches, teachers said yesterday.
Al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab is Somalia’s most powerful insurgent group and controls large parts of the south and the capital, Mogadishu. It is battling the western-backed government for control of the country.
Teachers and a school headmaster in Shabaab-controlled Jowhar town, about 90km north of Mogadishu, said an al-Shabaab member had ordered schools to silence their bells because the sound was too similar to those in Christian churches.
“We were called by Sheikh Farah, the head of al-Shabaab’s education, and he told us we can’t use bell sounds from now on,” a teacher in Jowhar said. “He told us any school heard using bell sounds after now will be brought to Islamic justice.”
A local headmaster confirmed the report and added that al-Shabaab had informed his school that it would begin explaining to students the significance of Islamic Jihad.
Al-Shabaab runs administrations in the areas it controls using a harsh version of sharia (Muslim law), cutting off hands of thieves, making sure women wear veils and banning what it calls social vices, like music and TV sports.
On Wednesday Islamist militants ordered music off the air, labelling it un-Islamic, in a hardline edict reminiscent of the Taliban.
Stations immediately complied with the order, fearful that disc jockeys would face the harsh punishment militants mete out here: amputations and stonings.
The edict is the latest unpopular order from the Islamists, who also have banned musical ringtones, movies and bras.
More than a dozen radio stations complied with the order by the militant group Hizbul Islam, the National Union of Somali Journalists said.
“Journalists working in these stations have in the past witnessed broad daylight assassination of their colleagues and have now been signalled that they would follow the same fate if they do not obey these oppressive orders,” said Omar Faruk Osman, the union’s secretary-general.
Somalia has a tradition of music, and most residents greeted the ban with dismay. Rock, rap and love songs from the US, Europe and Africa could be heard on Somali stations before the ban.

Let me explain why this graph is, well, frankly, bullshit.
When a Christian, Jew, Hindu or Buddhist, atheist or frankly any non Muslim hears the question they will hear it in one of a few similar ways. In essense, they think you mean, and rightfully so, that if someone attacks through words your symbols or ideas or what you may hold sacred within your faith or religious traditions. Or, they might hear that if you are personally physcially attacked for being what you are in terms of your religious identity. Some variant on one of these two themes.
Let me be very clear here.
When a Muslim thinks in these terms, or hears this question, they are hearing that if someone was to stop them imposing their religion and sharia laws on them, it is an attack on their religion. In Islam, they have an absolute unimpeachable and unalterable duty to spread Islam and impose it on the world. To prevent them from doing so, even in the nicest possible ways, to allow total freedom of religious worship but stop them from making you a subject of them, is an attack on their religion as they see it, and deserving of more physical force, even more than they where already using to impose their religion on you, for which you are a bad person for resisting, in the first place.
I know this is hard to wrap your heads around, but Islam has basically buggered a lot of the terms we are comfortable with amongst each other for the express purpose of anesthetizing us into becoming serfs under Islam. One of those terms, is ‘defence’.
When you factor that in, you realize the Muslims are answering a very different question, and that tends to make the results a lot more sque’d than they already are.

Somalia: Fear of Islamists kills music

MOGADISHU, Somalia, April 13 (UPI) — Most radio stations in Somalia have stopped playing music because of fear from the country’s Islamist insurgents.
The stations comply with a ban issued by the Islamist Hizbul-Islam insurgents who say music is un-Islamic, BBC News reports.
A government-controlled radio and a Kenyan station are the remaining two outlets playing songs.
The stations that stopped playing music are using “sounds such as gunfire, the noise of the vehicles and birds to link up our programs and news,” one radio executive told the BBC.
Hizbul-Islam and al-Shebab, the other major Islamist group, control most of Mogadishu and much of the country’s southern and central regions. They are said to have close links to al-Qaida and reports claim the terror organization is reinforcing them with senior insurgents from Yemen.
Somalia’s weak transitional government has been unable to stop violence in the country.

Three Muslim extremists charged after attack on Galloway

George Galloway was set upon by a group of Muslim extremists while campaigning in East London this afternoon. Three men, believed to belong to the extreme sect Islam4UK, the latest name for Al-Muhajiroun, were arrested and subsequently charged with public order offences.
Galloway, who is standing in the Poplar and Limehouse constituency, was with a party of supporters in Watney Market around 3pm when he and his colleagues were first abused and then attacked by the group.
“They called me a filthy Kaffir” said Galloway, “and shouted that no one should shake the ‘filthy Kaffir’s hand’. This lot are the latest incarnation of the banned group Al-Muhajiroun. They don’t want Muslims to vote, they don’t believe in democracy, and because I encourage Muslims to vote and take a full part in our society they hate me. My party, Respect, is the antidote to these despicable extremists.”
Galloway’s assistant Kevin Ovenden had his phone smashed in the incident and other supporters were abused and jostled.
Galloway was also attacked, held hostage and received death threats from Al-Muhajiroun, then called Al-Gourabaa, in the 2005 General Election.

Female staff who follow the Islamic faith will be allowed to cover their arms to preserve their modesty despite earlier guidance that all staff should be “bare below the elbow”.
The Department of Health has also relaxed rules prohibiting jewellery so that Sikh members of staff can wear bangles linked with their faith, providing they are pushed up the arm while the medic treats a patient.

A 13-year-old Yemeni girl who was forced into marriage died five days after her wedding when she suffered a rupture in her sex organs and hemorrhaging, a local rights organization said today. Ilham Mahdi al Assi died last Friday in a hospital in Yemen’s Hajja province, the Shaqaeq Arab Forum for Human Rights said in a statement quoting a medical report.
She was wedded the previous Monday in a traditional arrangement known as a “swap marriage,” in which the brother of the bride also married the sister of the groom, it said.
“The child Ilham has died as a martyr due to the abuse of children’s lives in Yemen,” the non-governmental organization said.
Her death was a “flagrant example” of the results of opposing the ban on child marriage in Yemen, which was leading to “killing child females,” it said.
The marriage of young girls is widespread in Yemen, which has a strong tribal structure.
The death of a 12-year-old girl in childbirth in September illustrated the case of the country’s “brides of death,” many of whom were married off even before puberty.
Controversy heightened in Yemen recently over a law banning child marriage in the impoverished country through setting a minimum age of 17 for women and 18 for men.
Thousands of conservative women demonstrated outside parliament last month, answering a call by Islamist parties opposing the law.
A lesser number of women rallied at the same venue a few days later in support of the law, the implementation of which was blocked pending a request by a group of politicians for a review.

Conservative and Liberal MP’s told CBC Radio’s Ottawa Morning Thursday that the federal government must continue putting pressure on the Saudi Arabian government to allow an Ottawa woman there to return to Canada.
Nazia Quazi, who graduated from the University of Ottawa and holds dual Indian-Canadian citizenship, alleges she has been unable to leave Saudi Arabia for two years because her father refuses to grant her permission.
Saudi law prohibits an unmarried woman from leaving the country unless she obtains her male guardian’s consent.
“We have to keep talking to both the Saudi government and to the father involved about why this just can’t continue in this way,” said Bob Rae, the Liberal foreign affairs critic Thursday.
Quazi, now 24, entered Saudi Arabia in 2007 on a visitor’s visa to see her family. She claims her father, an Indian national working in Saudi Arabia, sponsored her for a permanent visa without her knowledge, and took away her Canadian and Indian passports. Two police authorities killed, two injured in suicide bomb attacks in Russia’s North Caucasus
RIA Novosti… Two police officers were killed and another two injured in a series of two explosions, at least one of them caused by a suicide bomber, in Russia’s volatile southern province of Ingushetia, local police said on Monday.
It quoted an Ingush police spokesman as saying that the suicide bomber set off an explosive device when he was stopped by security guards at the gates of a police station in the town of Karabulak. A police source said the second blast occurred just minutes after the first, no one was killed or injured.
“He [the suicide bomber] arrived in a car and it was presumed the car was mined,” local police said. “All security measures were taken and as a result, the police’s fears were confirmed when the car exploded.”
Last week two deadly blasts occurred in two Moscow subway stations claiming some 40 lives and injuring dozens more. The attackers struck the Lubyanka and Park Kultury stations about 40 minutes apart during the morning rush hour.
Chechen militant leader Doku Umarov claimed responsibility for the metro attacks, saying in a video message they were revenge for a special operation carried out by federal security forces on February 11, 2010, when 18 militants and four civilians were killed in Ingushetia. He threatened further attacks.
Two days after the Moscow subway blasts another two explosions occurred in the town of Kizlyar, in Dagestan near the border with Chechnya, killing12 people and leaving 29 others injured.
The Russian counter-terrorism committee said the organizers of the recent terrorist attacks in Moscow and Kizlyar and some of the suicide bombers have been identified.
President Dmitry Medvedev said the bombings were all links in the same chain, while Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said a single terrorist group carried out the attacks.
Russia has been fighting militants in the North Caucasus for almost two decades, including two brutal wars against separatists in Chechnya.

Our Flemish correspondent VH reported on Thursday about the silencing of Benno Barnard at the University of Antwerp. Dr. Barnard was about to give a lecture on the differences between Islam and Christianity, but loud shouting and threats from a crowd of young Muslims forced the cancellation of his talk.
VH has compiled a follow-up report about the incident from miscellaneous Dutch-language sources. First, a translated interview with Benno Barnard from De Standaard.
“This was the best lecture I ever could have given”

Q: The title of the lecture that you intended to give in the University of Antwerp reads “Long live God, down with Allah.” The lecture is primarily about the Judeo-Christian tradition. Why did you choose that title? A: Obviously, in the title I make use of the rhetorical technique of the provocation. A characteristic of the Judeo-Christian tradition is debate. This interaction goes back to the Old Testament and led to the Enlightenment, humanism and democracy. Provocation is the clearest form of disagreement. Our entire culture exists because of that. Islam does not know that debate. To clarify the difference, I switch on the metaphor of Allah.
Q: In other words, the Islam is an undemocratic religion. A: The real Islam does not know the possibility of democratization. There are democratically sound Muslims, but they do not stick to the strict rules of Islam. Sharia is described in the Quran, and it is those laws the real Islam preaches. There is a quote from Kemal Ataturk: “Islam, that absurd theology of an immoral Bedouin, is a rotting corpse which poisons our lives.” And I can give you still more such as this from unexpected sources who criticize Islam. Secularization is in violation of Islam, as it emerged from Mecca and Medina.
And all that nonsense about the real Islam, you can study at the University of Antwerp in the context of active pluralism. Some of the members of Sharia4Belgium are studying at the UA. That way they also found out about the lecture. Or did you think it is followed outside the university?
Q: Would you have preferred to have given your reading or do you find the incident stronger than your lecture? A: That was the best lecture I could give. I speak two sentences and get no further because they start roaring ‘Allahu akhbar’. Welcome to the future! By their action they have formulated a part of my thesis. Q: In 2004, along with other writers, you called on people not to vote for the (then) Vlaams Blok. Last year you agreed with Filip Dewinter in his criticism of Islam. What has changed you? A: “I have studied Islam thoroughly, by reading the Koran but also by reading other books. Nowadays I think Filip Dewinter is a prophet. I always called him a racist, but had blinders on then. He understood very early what the true nature of Sharia is. As a Belgicist, though, I am not a lover of Vlaams Belang [VB strives for an independent Flanders—translator].” Q: What are you then? A: I have often called myself a left-wing conservative. I advocate a leftist emancipation. Many leftist people are actually right-wing without knowing it. From a misunderstanding of social reality they support Muslims. Then at a certain point you get feminists who defend the burka. Education has been ruined by a mistaken equal opportunities policy of the Social Democrats. I am the opposite of a racist. This whole story is in theory the most harmful of all for moderate Muslims. One of the police officers yesterday [Wednesday March 31] was a Muslim, and he was abused as a traitor.
Q: Were you actually warned beforehand that protection would be needed? A: The police had contacted the university. Their safety unit had noticed messages on the website Sharia4Belgium and also knew that the group “Youth for Islam” was calling via SMS for the boycott. Q: Were you still shocked by the incident? A: What do you think? At that moment it seems so unrealistic that it is exactly as if you are watching yourself on television. In retrospect it only begins to dawn. Luckily I had bodyguards, otherwise I would not be able to speak to anyone today.

KABUL (Reuters) – For the shy Afghan girl who sat quietly in a detention center with a pale blue headscarf, teenage rebellion had come at a heavy price: seven years in prison.
Engaged to an older man who had offered $5,000 to her father but in love with a boy she spoke to on the phone, the 16-year-old girl was hauled before a court that found her guilty of running away from home, according to an account she provided.
“I was engaged to an older man and I was not happy. He was painting his beard black,” said the girl, who cannot be named because of rules protecting juvenile detainees.
Now pregnant, she said she did not know who the baby’s father was, adding she had slept with both the boy she was in love with and the man she was engaged to. She also said she had been raped while in detention before being sent to the Kabul facility. The girl’s story offers a glimpse into the nature of Afghanistan’s rudimentary justice system, underscoring the uphill task ahead as U.S. President Barack Obama calls for improving the rule of law to match military gains in the country.
Obama has ordered an extra 30,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan to beat back a resurgent Taliban, but officials also recognize progress on civilian issues like corruption, governance and justice will be essential to bringing stability to the country.
“I’ve seen travesties in court,” said Kimberly Motley, a U.S. lawyer who interviewed 348 detainees, judges and others for a report on the juvenile justice system and also represents the pregnant Afghan girl in an effort to win her freedom.
“I’ve seen kids not even being brought into court for their hearing. Cases without any witnesses. And more times, no evidence than any evidence. And the verdict is always guilty.”
Young girls usually fare the worst within the system, she said. In a deeply conservative Muslim society where women were banned from education during Taliban rule, anything from trying to escape a forced marriage to walking down the street with a boy who is not a relative can land them in jail.

The Rector of the UA Alain Verschoren, emphasizes that the University of Antwerp values active pluralism highly and wants to provide space for all opinions to enter into a dialogue with each other. “I regret that there was no opportunity for dialogue, because the lecture was already disturbed after a only few minutes.”

When Barnard took the floor, there was hell to pay. Someone shouted, “You must not make jokes about Islam.” Then a group of about eighty foreigners started chanting “Allahu Akhbar”. The youngsters stormed the stage and the debate was canceled, ended before it even began. Those worried about the rise of Islamic headscarves should definitely look at the video (see below) of the action. After the headscarves, now also men in long robes with long beards and turbans are on the rise. And all this under the banner of “religious freedom”, “multicultural enrichment” and “tolerance,” “peaceful” Islam.

Police spokesman Fons Bastiaenssens confirms that a little after eight in the evening they received a message about the disruption at the university. Upon arrival, the police escorted some twenty Muslims out of the building. In the end the incident included some shouting, but there was no violence. There were no arrests.
Antwerp Mayor Patrick Janssens [SP.a., Flemish Socialist Party] is outraged. At the local TV channel (ATV), he compared the incident to “a meeting of OPEC that ended in a quarrel”.
