Authorities had been tracking suspect Mohammed Whitaker, 27, at his Grandview home, south of Kansas City, after receiving tips from the public.
“Tonight might be a good night’s sleep. It’s been few nights [like that] for so many of us,” Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said at a news conference after Whitaker was charged.
Of the 18 charges, two are for shooting into a motor vehicle and striking someone, seven are for shooting into a motor vehicle and nine are for armed criminal action.
Whitaker was arrested Thursday from his home, just south of the Grandview Triangle — a meeting of highways where most of the shootings occurred. Others happened in nearby suburban communities surrounding Kansas City.
Poll of 3500 Turkish men reveals wife beating not a problem.
In their education efforts, the Islamic government based on the message that violence against women is also a violation of Islam. But there is perhaps the biggest problem: The honor killing researcher Hülya Özaktürk found out by interviewing numerous women murderers that they consider their actions to conform to the precepts of religion. This may also apply for “normal” domestic violence.
This raises the question of whether government policy promoting the religion itself contributes, despite all preventive and educational programs to encourage those social strata in their views, which are most likely to violence against women.
Die Welt: The Turkish Family Minister Fatma Sahin said some time ago, the government is working to not only get a better grip on violence against wives by their husbands, but to eliminate it completely.
That may be too optimistic. A new statistic shows that it probably reflexive of the thinking of most Turkish men and would have the opposite effect. A survey by the University of Kirikkale and the organization “Happy Children” of 3500 Turkish men, which used a truism, anyways in Turkey: ”Of course most Turkish men find violence against wives completely normal, sensible and practical.”
28 percent of respondents considered violence against wives is essential: This must be done precisely to discipline them. 34 percent said they considered themselves moderate and violence against marriage offers only “occasionally” and when “necessary”.
Together they are 62 percent, almost two-thirds of the men surveyed. Maybe it is because everyone already knows the country that men think so. But now they were for the first time ever questioned on the subject.
The conditions under which violence is justified in the survey offered graded statements. 18 percent of men responded positively to the basic view that “the man is the ruler of the house and can violence freely applied if necessary.”
30.9 percent wanted only to strike when “a good reason” was given for it. But perhaps most telling was a different proposition, which introduced the “honor” as the reason. 37.9 percent of respondents agreed that violence was justified to enforce principles such as honor, integrity and discipline.
For this purpose, one must understand that particularly in the Kurdish southeast of the country, but also in the major cities with its many immigrant Kurds, which means “honor” for the livelihood of many families.
If it is “dirty”, you will be shunned, might in turn mean doing business to earn money. “Spotted” she is the woman suspected of misconduct-. Indecent clothes, flirting with other men, extramarital relationships
An actual wrongdoing is not necessary, evil rumors are sufficient. Is that going once, then one is faced with the choice of being outcast or kill the woman, or to flee with her somewhere where no one knows.
And inasmuch as many men like the beating appear as a lesser evil, if it serves to preserve the “honor”, so keep the woman of it to behave in a way that could make in the neighborhood of rumors, then saves it – so the logic – not only honor, but under certain circumstances the woman before something worse.
The fact is that the statistics reported a steady increase in domestic violence against women. A year ago, the Turkish Parliament adopted a much acclaimed law against domestic violence, but so far seems to have no effect: last year 125 women were killed by their husbands or partners, and the trend is likely rising – only this March were there 14 murders.
More than 30,000 women have been physically hurt by their husbands or partners in the past year. The Family Ministry offers workshops and marriage counseling before marriage to, is where HEMTT good communication and non-violent problem solving.
The government has also introduced a “panic button” program, to send with a single push of a button on their phone in acute threat to a distress signal, the oppressed women. The efficacy was but “not yet documented,” says the Family Ministry.
[…]
The unanswered question is whether this force increases, or is reported and documented only more often, and if there are the views of the men who harden by the ongoing decade Islamization, or whether on the contrary, a progressive softening of conservative behavior, ie a liberalization in the society, more and more male violence leads to more free-thinking women. The fact is that much of the violence, particularly the murders of women arises in a divorce situation.

Cheryl Maddison moved from Houghton-le-Spring to Majorca for work but days after she arrived she was raped and stabbed after being followed home.
She suffered multiple stab wounds and a collapsed lung, and the attack only came to an end when she pretended to be dead.
A neighbour heard her cries but thought it was a couple having an argument so chose not to call the police.
The 25-year-year collapsed outside her apartment in a pool of her own blood following the attack.
Moroccan waiter Mohamed Fadel el Anssari, 31, is alleged to have raped the 25-year-old before stabbing her and leaving her for dead in May 2008.
Miss Maddison flew to the island this week to give evidence in court against the man accused of attacking her.

An 11-year-old girl was branded with an ‘M’ for Mohammed on her buttocks to show she ‘belonged’ to a member of a child sex ring, the Old Bailey heard today.
The child was repeatedly subjected to ‘torture sex’ sessions where she was bound and gagged before being raped by members of the gang, a jury was told.
The girl is the youngest victim of nine men who allegedly hung around outside schools and care homes to recruit vulnerable victims they could use and abuse.
The court heard how the girl had been ‘sold’ by an unidentified man to an alleged member of the sex ring, Mohammed Karrar, in mid-2004.
After what she describes as a ‘nicey-nicey honeymoon period’ in which she was lavished with gifts including perfume, she was then plied with hard drugs.
It is alleged that Karrar then pimped her out, raping her in her own living room and inviting others to do the same.

EDMONTON – A man and woman are facing charges for allegedly assaulting and confining a 21-year-old woman against her will in a south Edmonton home after she refused to take part in a forced marriage outside of Canada.
Police were called to reports of a family dispute around 11:30 p.m. at a home in south Edmonton on Feb. 6 this year, Edmonton police said Thursday.
They found a 21-year-old woman who was being forcibly confined in her house.
Police say the woman was being forced to take part in a marriage outside of Canada, but did not say where. When the woman refused the marriage, she was assaulted and confined in the home, police allege.
Court records show the weapons allegedly used in the assault are an electrical cord and a laptop computer.
Few other details were provided by police. “It’s for the protection of the victim,” police spokeswoman Noreen Remtulla said.
On Tuesday, nine months to the day after the initial incident, hate crimes investigators laid several charges in the case.
Muhammad Rafi, 59, is charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, one count of assault and one count of forcible confinement. Najma Khokhar, 49, is charged with forcible confinement and assault. Both were released Wednesday on $1,000 bail and are slated to make their first appearances in an Edmonton court on Dec. 19.
Folks, there is no easy way out of this.
As long as it’s necessary for police to safeguard a building from being firebombed do to irate Muslims, then the mocking of their religious figures, as distasteful as it is, is paramount and needs to continue and be defended. No one group can be allowed to intimidate others through violence from expressing an opinion. You let it slip here, then free speech is doomed for good.

Riot police were guarding the offices of a satirical magazine in Paris last night as it prepared to publish cartoons mocking the Prophet Mohammed.
Charlie Hedbo’s HQ in the French capital was firebombed last year after it published an issue it claimed had been guest-edited by Mohammed.
Despite the attack, it has now decided to print further drawings, including one of the Prophet in a wheelchair being pushed by a Jewish Rabbi.
Any surprise that it turned violent?
h/t: Fluffy who said:
“about an hour ago the women and children left the protest, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned really nasty. there is at least one female journo there, who is so far doing a good job, but I hope like heck she gets out of there.”
Fluffy was right, sending the womenfolk and children home is always a prelude to violent confrontation.
Eight people are expected to be charged after violent clashes between hundreds of police and protesters erupted in Sydney’s CBD.
Six police were injured and 17 others were treated for the effects of capsicum spray on Saturday when a demonstration against an anti-Islamic film got out of hand.
Eight of the protesters were expected to be charged with a range of offences, including affray, assaulting police, resisting arrest and throwing a missile.
Police said they would also begin poring through “a significant amount of evidence” that had been gathered through the media and officers, and that anyone caught committing offences would be “vigorously pursued”.
Saturday’s angry scenes began after about 1pm (AEST), when an “unannounced and unapproved” group of people gathered at Town Hall as part of a global protest against an anti-Islamic film.
Police said the group began walking along George Street towards Martin Place, where they attempted to enter the US consulate, which is located in the MLC Centre.
It was here, according to police, that violence between officers and the growing group first broke out.

Always remember, according to Islamic texts, Islam’s founder sawed off the heads of his captives. So while Mohamed didn’t invent the practice, he and his followers definitely promulgated it.

Seventeen civilians including two women were beheaded in a southern Afghanistan village in a region plagued by the Taliban insurgency, officials said Monday.
“Last night 17 local villagers, two women and 15 men, were beheaded by unknown people in Kajaki district,” Daud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Helmand provincial administration, told AFP.
“We don’t know who was behind the killings at this time. We’re investigating,” Ahmadi said.
A senior police official in the province, Mohammad Ismael Hotak, confirmed the incident, giving a similar account.
Taliban insurgents are active in the troubled region and they have in the past been blamed for beheading local villagers, mostly over charges of spying for Afghan and US-led Nato forces.
Police said they still did not know why… Imran Rashid, Raja Jeelani, Robuel Islam, and brothers Usman and Rizwan Ahmed murdered Serioza Lawskoski
Well I’m not Sherlock Holmes, but I think I found a clue.
Five men have been convicted of murdering a Polish father of three who died after being hit with a hammer and kicked in a Derby street.
Police said they still did not know why the men from Derby attacked Serioza Lawskoski, 29, in Normanton last April.
Imran Rashid, 29, of Madeley Street, Raja Jeelani, 26, of Depot Street, Robuel Islam, 25, of Loudon Street, and brothers Usman and Rizwan Ahmed, 19 and 23, were found guilty after a trial.
They will be sentenced on Wednesday.
The men were also found guilty of conspiring to cause grievous bodily harm against Mr Lawskoski, along with a sixth man, 21-year-old Kamran Ahmed, of Northumberland Street, Derby.
Kamran Ahmed was originally charged with murder but this was dismissed during the trial.
Det Supt Andy Stokes, who led the inquiry, said: “This was a particularly challenging case because of the lack of apparent motive and limited initial evidence.”
In the same nine-week trial, Rashid and Jeelani were also convicted of conspiring to cause grievous bodily harm against 20-year-old Renato Blackwood, who was assaulted in St Mary’s Wharf Road, Derby, on 1 January 2011.
Kicked several times
Nottingham Crown Court heard Mr Lawskoski, from Leacroft Road, Pear Tree, Derby, was confronted by the gang shortly after leaving a friend’s house in Cummings Street on the evening of 23 April.

We hope that no other family has to suffer and go through what we have”
Ludomier Krakowiak Father of Serioza Lawskoski
The attack was unprovoked and Mr Lawskoski did not know the men.
Prosecutors said he was asked “what are you looking at?” before being hit with a hammer and then kicked in the head several times as he lay on the ground.
The court heard he may simply have been “in the wrong place at the wrong time”.
He was found lying unconscious in the street and was taken to the Royal Derby Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Mobile phone analysis showed the gang had texted and called each other before going to Cummings Street.
In a statement, Ludomier Krakowiak, Mr Lawskoski’s father, said: “Serioza was a good son, husband and father to three children. He loved life and people loved him. He was a keen musician and singer, we are all heartbroken at his loss.”
Mr Krakowiak said his son came to the UK from Poland in 2004 to work to support his family.
“Our hope is that nothing of this nature happens to anyone else; the worst thing that can happen to anyone is to lose your own child,” he added.
“We hope that no other family has to suffer and go through what we have.”
