Iraqi women on the margins of the election

From Foreign Policy. By Zainab Salbi, founder and CEO of Women for Women International.

Another political event takes place in Iraq without much mention of women. And in the rare occasion that women are mentioned, it is often with the token spirit about how wonderful it is that they now have 25 percent of political seats in the Iraqi parliament.

The fact that most women were comfortable in using their images and names in public billboards for their nominations reflects some comfort with women’s mobility in the public space in Iraq. Pictures of women in billboards were diverse-from artistic pictures of women without headscarves, to pictures of women covered head to toe, to even a picture of a woman with her entire face covered.  The lack of vandalism on these billboards shows the more accepting attitude of this election.  The fact that there is now an all-female political party, founded by Jenan Mubarak in her own name, also says a lot about a level of comfort in the country, despite the inconsistent security-or rather the more consistent insecurity-of Iraq. Backlash at the mosque The Telegraph

The influence of Muslim fundamentalists in east London is being challenged, says Andrew Gilligan .

In the two weeks since the Islamic Forum of Europe were exposed by The Sunday Telegraph and Channel 4’s Dispatches as hardline fundamentalists secretly infiltrating the political system, they have been furiously protesting their “proven track record of community cohesion”. Last week, however, the organisation showed its true face.

“We’ve tracked you down,” said the IFE’s community affairs co-ordinator, Azad Ali, in a webcast targeting the Channel 4 reporter “Atif”, who went undercover at the IFE’s headquarters, the East London Mosque, filming the group’s true views – and its boasts that it controlled the local Tower Hamlets council. “Yes, Atif, we’ve got a picture of you and a lot more than you thought we had. We’ve tracked you down to different places. And if people are gonna turn what I’ve just said into a threat, that’s their fault, innit?”

Mr Ali’s words sit strangely with his role as an official advisor to the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer, and to the police, but perhaps his annoyance is understandable. The undercover reporters filmed him saying: “Democracy, if it means not implementing the sharia, no one’s going to agree with that.”

The reporters found that, far from its protestations of being merely a “social welfare organisation”, the IFE is an organised political movement dedicated to creating an “Islamic social and political order” through “entryism” into mainstream democratic institutions. Continue Reading →

Antisemitism in Malmo Sweden

Here is the first of two videos recently found on Norwegian media on this issue. This one is an interview with a Jewish family who is moving to Israel. The next, one I hope to have tomorrow, will show teachers who are not even Jewish but who are afraid to show their faces or voices discussing this issue for fear of reprisal from Muslim children who spread violent hate of Jews in schools in Sweden.

Thank you very much KitmanTV for staying up way past any sane hour and working hard to translate this video for us all.

This week’s “Tales from the ‘Freedom’ Files”

This week’s stories remind us once again, of how ‘old fashioned’ rational thought is being replaced by ‘progressive’, irrational ideology. The Loony left in its’ mission to create a better, more thoughtful world, continue to cast aside what they consider the useless notions of public consultation, debate and majority consent in favour of their gentler, wiser dictatorial approach. Initially, we at vladtepesblog were reluctant to post these stories, as they may only provide more data for the social engineers of our cities to expand their role of government interference in our personal choices and anything else enjoyable. Concluding they will rail on regardless, we got over it. Enjoy.

#1 From Britain. Mother branded abuser for telling daughter of cesarean. Social workers have placed the five-year old daughter of a professional couple on the child register for ’emotional abuse’ after her mother told her she had been delivered by cesarean. Other allegations against the mother include cuddling her daughter for too long when dropping her off at nursery.  The intervention from Birmingham social services and a subsequent request to hold a child protection conference resulted from allegations which stemmed from the daycare. Friction developed between Mrs. Malik and the nursery after staff reported the child ‘bit her nails’ and was heard swearing.  Birmingham MP John Hemming responded saying ” This whole case is madness as there is no reason for the state to be involved in this little girl’s life in this way”.

#2 From Ottawa. Resident told to erase sidewalk chalk art. On one of the season’s first warm, sunny days, eleven year old Remi Ackert-Fraser made a big chalk drawing of a Canadian flag in front of her home in the Byward Market. The following day, complaints from neighbours led the grade 6 student’s mother Jamine Ackert to wash her daughter’s art away. “My neighbour said, ‘It looks like shit, and you should remove it”. The building’s property manager and the president of the condo association’s board told Ms. Ackert of the complaints citing some had said the chalk art had defaced the property. “What will they do now, asked Ackert, stop hopscotch in the Market?” The Market seems to attract partypoopers, the last being councilor Georges Bedard and his campaign to crackdown on rowdies, bad language and disorderly conduct.

#3 From the U.S. 119 words banned from use by radio broadcasters at WGN Chicago. The CEO of the troubled Tribune Company has made an effort to eradicate 119 all-too common words and phrases from the lexicon of WGN radio reporters dogged by cliches. Staff have also been given ‘bingo cards’ to keep tabs on each others usage and turn in offenders. They are urged to use the cards as a snitching tool to record the precise time and date if a fellow worker is found to be non-compliant.  A memo circulated to staff reads: ” The real goal here is to avoid using words that make you sound like you’re reading instead of talking–that shatter the image that you’re speaking knowledgeably to one person. By not using ‘news-speak’, you enhance your reputation as a communicator”. (Yes, ‘after the break’, ‘after these commercial messages’ and ‘in other news’ are on the list).

#4 From the U.K. Amateur gardeners urged to use peat free compost to lessen carbon footprint. The Environmental Secretary has called for a phasing out of peat compost sold by garden centers to green-thumbed householders by 2020 to combat its environmental impact. The recently launched campaign aims to raise awareness among homeowners of its negative impact and seeks to encourage such gardeners to find peat free alternatives. ” I know that the proposed 2020 phase-out for the amateur market will be challenging, but we know this is what we need to do”, said Environmental Secretary Hilary Benn. (Urges turn into needs and needs turn into bans).

#5 From the U.K. Charcoal next in line for outlaw status; meet Camden’s killjoy barbecue police. Primrose Hill community center in north London has been successfully hosting a summer barbecue festival for the community for three decades. But recent requirements by the Camden Council have dampened the festival’s fun. All staff, volunteers and artists attending must undergo a Criminal Records Bureau check. ‘Under-represented ethnic groups’ must be invited and any volunteer who wishes to man a barbecue stand must undergo a special how-to, health and safety course. All traditional charcoal barbecues have been replaced with gas units in a combined eco-friendly and risk-aversion safety bid with officials sent to ensure only the right kind of barbecue is being used by a qualified burger flipper. These bids are a natural spin-off of local authorities gone mad with ridiculous regulation.

*** And now the story of the week that we didn’t have time to mention……….

From the U.S., Canada and the U.K. New York’s state legislature considers banning salt from restaurants. Chefs and restaurant owners are taking aim at a bill that would prevent them from using salt while preparing food in restaurant kitchens. The legislation was brought forward by Felix Ortiz, Democrat Brooklyn, and if passed, would allow fines of $1,000 to be issued to any restaurant found in violation.  “We need to talk of the two ingredients of salt; health care costs and deaths”, Ortiz said adding, ” reducing the content of sodium content of food could save 100,000 lives in the city”. But salt shakers would stay in place on tables. Chefs understand that salt if used properly, is an essential ingredient in cooking, realizing it’s intrinsic ability to enhance natural flavours. It is a rare trained chef who would be advised to omit it’s use. New York chefs have banned together to fight the bill with one saying “modifying sodium intake needs to be home based for optimal health”.

But health lunacy is not confined to New York. Since the Ontario government has banned junk food from schools it has realized it needs to recoup vending revenues lost to the junk food ban. The solution? Replace junk food vending machines with water machines where kids buy ‘chilled’ drinking water. According to liberal logic it works something like this: ban the junk and ‘encourage’ kids to buy healthy water from a $10,000 vending machine, something they can already get from a fountain in the corridor so they can fund previous government idiocy.

If it’s a sniff of clean air you want, why not look to the National Trust in the U.K.? Responding to the high stress level of 74% of Brits, air has been collected in environmentally-friendly British made recycled glass jars providing harried UK workers with an instantly relaxed feeling.

Fresh air from the lakes
Fresh air from the Lakes

The air collected from the sea side, comes in several scents; lakeside aroma of Windermere, the smell of Townsend, the grass-filled air of Wiltshire and a wood-land scent from Surrey. Wondering if the air was trucked in? Never you mind, the jars can be recycled and filled with jam or preserves. Better yet, why not capture your own fresh air scent, say Bouquet de Bureaucracy or Eau d’ Enviro?

Crowd of 3 thousand Muslims attack a Coptic Christian community, 25 injured

H/T Tundra Tabloids

Faithful were gathered in prayer when attack occurred. There were four priests, one deacon and 400 parishioners in the building, women and children also targeted. Fundamentalists fury, egged on by the imam, unleashed by the rumour that the Christians are building a new church. In reality it is a hospice.

Cairo (AsiaNews / Agencies) – The toll from an attack on the Coptic Christian community that took place yesterday in the north-western province of Mersa Matrouh, Egypt is 25 wounded, including women and children. A crowd of around 3 thousand Muslims attacked the faithful gathered in prayer in a building adjoining the local church. The fundamentalists fury, encouraged by the imam, was sparked by the rumour that the Christians have begun to build a new place of worship.

Around 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon, the Muslims – a group of Bedouins and Salafi fanatics – started throwing stones at a construction site, which they believe in reality will be a new church. Local witnesses reported that security forces present were not sufficient to contain the attack. The police fired tear gas and arrested a dozen people, including Muslims and Christians. Only this morning, reinforcements arrived from Alexandria, thanks to which the Coptic faithful trapped inside the building could return to their homes. Continue Reading →

Al Qaeda suspect had worked at nuke plants in NJ and Pa

By Chelsea Conaboy

INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

The American arrested in a sweep of al-Qaeda members worked as a laborer at five nuclear plants in South Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland, federal officials said today.

Sharif Mobley had a “red badge” clearance, the highest level a laborer can obtain, while working on at the Salem-Hope Creek nuclear plants in Salem County, according to a spokesman from the local union of which he was a member.

Sharif was arrested last week with suspected al-Qaeda members in Yemen and officials said he then killed a guard while trying to escape from a hospital. He is under FBI investigation in Delaware. Law enforcement sources have said the investigation is terror-related.

In addition to PSEG’s Salem-Hope Creek plants on Artificial Island, Mobley worked at the Peach Bottom, Limerick and Three Mile Island I plants in Pennsylvania and at Clavert Cliffs in Maryland, according to an e-mail from Neil Sheehan, a spokesman for the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Muslims sponsor child brides, Canadian officials claim ‘little they can do’

From The Toronto Sun

Immigration: ‘Child bride’ loophole can’t be closed

By TOM GODFREY, QMI Agency

Last Updated: March 11, 2010 4:49pm

Federal immigration officials say there’s little they can do to stop “child brides” from being sponsored into Canada by much older husbands who wed them in arranged marriages abroad.Top immigration officials in Canada and Pakistan say all they can do is reject the sponsorships of husbands trying to bring their child-brides to Canada. The men have to reapply when the bride turns 16.

The marriages are permitted under Sharia Law.

Muslim men, who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, return to their homeland to wed a “child bride” in an arranged marriage in which a dowry is given to the girl’s parents.

Officials said some of the brides can be 14 years old or younger and many are forced to marry. The practice occurs in a host of countries including Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Lebanon.

In classified documents, Canadian visa officer Steve Bulmer said he refused to allow one Pakistani man to sponsor his 15-year-old bride in August 2009.

“I can find no section (of law) that states the marriage is ‘invalid’ or ‘void,'” Bulmer wrote in e-mails obtained by lawyer Richard Kurland under Access of Information. “I am afraid the age does not invalidate the marriage even if it is illegal to marry.”

Abdul Hameed, of the Canadian embassy in Islamabad, said child marriages are not valid in Canada.

“A child marriage is punishable but it does not render the marriage invalid,” Hameed said. “We are refusing such application on grounds the marriage will not be valid as per Canadian laws.” William Hawke, of immigration’s Permanent Resident Unit, said the young brides won’t be allowed in Canada.

“Sponsorship applications submitted for a spouse under 16 will be refused,” Hawke said. “Once an underage spouse turns 16 they are a member of the family class” and can be sponsored.

He said the application is rejected if a spouse turns 16 during processing. Kurland said there’s little that can be done to stop Canadians from marrying child brides.

“A 15-year-old bride doesn’t void a marriage,” Kurland said on Thursday.

“The application is turned down and the person can reapply when his bride turns 16.”

He said the practice has been going on for years and “is a concrete loophole that can’t be fixed.”

Immigration officials quoting an Afghanistan Law of Marriages said in some countries it is “customary for young females to wed men considerably older, especially if the man is in a position of financial or social power.”

According to the law, it is not uncommon for marriages between first cousins or extended family members.

Britain: plans for mosque at Sandhurst thrown out

Battle of the Minarets: Surrey residents say a Mosque at Sandhurst is an act of provocation, their critics say they are racist

By Sue Reid
Last updated at 12:14 AM on 12th March 2010

Victory was being celebrated yesterday in the leafy avenues and Victorian villas of Camberley.

In a triumph for local democracy, a plan to build a huge £3 million mosque with two 100ft minarets, which would have been visible from Sandhurst Royal Military Academy, was thrown out on Wednesday night by the town’s councillors.

A thousand people from the affluent Surrey town queued to get into the meeting, some waiting for hours from 9am to get in.
