YEMEN: WOMEN MOBILISE FOR LAW ON ‘BABY BRIDES’

(ANSAmed) – BEIRUT, MARCH 23 – In Sanàa women are mobilising: h/t gates of vienna:

several hundred protested today in Yemen to support a law banning the marriage of girls under the age of 17. Just two days ago thousands protested against the same law. Underneath a burning sun and covered from head to toe in black niqabs, the demonstrators, who arrived in the city on about ten buses on Sunday, warned the parliamentary committee that will examine the text of the law in the coming month to reject it because, they chanted, “it is not permissible to ban what God allows”.

Supporting their view is also a ‘fatwa’ (religious legal pronouncement) stating that those who support the law are apostate. The fatwa was signed by a group of influential religious figures including Sheikh Abdul Majid al Zindani, who according to the U.S. was one of the spiritual teachers of Osama bin Laden. Today a response arrived: a rally organised by various groups for the defence of women’s rights in Yemen, many of which support the government. In reality, not many people were present at the event held in front of Parliament, but the group did include Nojoud Mohammad Ali, who has become a symbolic figure in the fight against forced marriages in Yemen.

Nojoud was forced to marry a 28-year-old man when she was eight, but in 2008 she reported her father to authorities and obtained a divorce. Many today also remembered Fawzia Abdallah Youssef, who died in September of last year due to a haemorrhage in the Saudi Arabian hospital of Hajja, north of Sanàa, while she was giving birth to a still-born baby at the age of 12, which she had with her husband, who she had married the year before. The practice of forced marriages in Yemen is well rooted and the law that intends to regulate them in reality was already approved in February last year, but was then blocked and sent to the parliamentary commission to be examined by a group of delegates who labelled it as anti-Islamic. According to a study by the Social Affairs Ministry, one-fourth of Yemenites marry before the age of 15. This is partly due to a tribal structure of society and widespread poverty, especially in rural areas, while religion also plays a fundamental role in the practice. (ANSAmed).

Islamic roots of the African Slave Trade

I had this video on Sevenload some time ago but as that channel was closed, and it is a very important document, I re uploaded it to Vimeo. Subtitled in English, this was made in German and French and details both the Islamic justification for the trading of human beings as slaves, but also shows how the true history of the slave trade is distorted and outright buried by organizations such as OXFAM and UNICEF due to the take over of the UN by the OIC, or ‘Organization of Islamic Conference’.

This truly is  a stunning document, and makes sense of a lot of history of slavery, Islam, and the west.

If you do not see the video below, click on the header at the top of this article and it will bring you to the unique page where it lives and you should be able to see it fine.

MP quizzed by police after saying ‘wearing burkha was like having paper bag over your head’

MAILONLINE… An MP was investigated by police for inciting racial hatred over controversial burkha comments following complaints from a human rights association.

Conservative MP Philip Hollobone said wearing a burkha was the religious equivalent of ‘going round with a paper bag over your head’.

During a parliamentary debate last month he urged the House of Commons to ‘seriously consider’ banning the garment.

Now it has emerged police received a complaint about the Kettering MP a few days after his comments from the Northamptonshire Rights and Equality Council (NREC).

Officers rang Mr Hollobone to say a complaint had been made but the Crown Prosecution dropped the case a few days later as there were no grounds for prosecution.

Debates in Westminster are protected by parliamentary privilege but Mr Hollobone said the complaint could have related to comments made inside or outside the Commons.

He blasted the ‘hypocritical and ‘patronising’ NREC today for championing freedom of speech while attempting to have him prosecuted.

Last month the organisation sent the outspoken MP a letter criticising his stance on Muslim women who chose to wear the burkha in public.

Mr Hollobone said: ‘It’s complete hypocrisy. They talk on one hand about freedom of speech and expression and then without even making contact try to get me prosecuted.

‘In this country you should be able to have a debate about controversial subjects without the threat of police action. That’s how democracy works. Continue Reading →

‘Whereas Ann Coulter is a hateful woman…’ Kathy Shaidle

From : Newsreel blog

University of Ottawa Vice Provost Francois Houle (artist’s rendering)

By now, some of you may have heard the latest sorry dispatch from up here in Canuckistan.

Ann Coulter is paying her first visit to my “country” this week, visiting three Canadian campuses. Last night, she was welcomed by this slightly sinister, typically passive aggressive email from University of Ottawa vice-president academic, provost, and known Frenchman Francois Houle (his real name), which read in part:

I would, however, like to inform you, or perhaps remind you, that our domestic laws, both provincial and federal, delineate freedom of expression (or “free speech”) in a manner that is somewhat different than the approach taken in the United States. I therefore encourage you to educate yourself, if need be, as to what is acceptable in Canada and to do so before your planned visit here. You will realize that Canadian law puts reasonable limits on the freedom of expression. For example, promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges.

Outside of the criminal realm, Canadian defamation laws also limit freedom of expression and may differ somewhat from those to which you are accustomed. I therefore ask you, while you are a guest on our campus, to weigh your words with respect and civility in mind.

Yes, you read that correctly: a man whose salary I’m obliged to pay via my extorted tax dollars just hinted, in the nicest possible way of course, that he’d try to have Coulter arrested if she said something he didn’t like.

As my husband quipped: “Maybe it sounded better in the original German…”

Alas, many other Canadians somehow failed to get that “respect and civility” memo (I guess Canada Post lost it…) and responded to the provost in their own “inappropriate” way. Take Mark Steyn, who knows all about those “hate speech” laws:

What a sad and embarrassing letter, even by the standards of the Canadian academy. Does M Houle write to all University of Ottawa speakers like this? Or does he reserve his telekinetic powers to detect “pre-crime” only for the ideologically suspect?

I’ve no idea what Ann Coulter’s reaction to this letter is, but I suspect it’s “Go ahead, Princess Fairy Pants, make my day.”

I’ve posted other respectful and civil emails to Mr. Houle at my blog (language warning), along with his complete contact information at U of O. I expect his fax machine ran out of paper around midnight last night. Ooopsie.

(And yes, the dude speaks English. They just pretend not to, believe me…)

Since the story hit the fan, Canadian students have duly roused themselves from their pothead slumber to fight the coming invasion of this dangerous female by doing brave stuff like… passing motions at meetings.

True story: The Ottawa University Federation of Students passed a motion last night which reads (and I am not making this up):

Whereas Ann Coulter is a hateful woman;
Whereas she has made hateful comments against GLBTQ, Islam, Judaism, and women;
Be it resolved that the [Student Federation of the University of Ottawa] express its disapproval of having Ann Coulter speak at the University of Ottawa.

Give then credit, though: unlike their London counterparts, the students above at least managed to spell Ann Coulter’s name right.

Meanwhile, I’ll be at Coulter’s talk in London, Ontario this evening, which has also generated its fair share of faux outrage and travel sized moral posturing.

I have dared the anonymous cowards behind this shabby excuse for a website to come up to me tonight and “express their concerns” to my face. We’re in for a fabulous evening!

Are Bangladeshis Islamophobes?

by Baron Bodissey

We’re all familiar with the concept of burqa-wearing as a human right. Those who interfere with women who wear the burqa — for example, the French government — are accused of hatred and discrimination against Muslims and women, a PC twofer. They are also called “racists”, “xenophobes”, “Islamophobes”, etc.

Funnily enough, although Bangladesh is overwhelmingly Muslim (at least 88%), a hospital in Dhaka has just cracked down on burqa-wearing. Like the German postal clerk who refused to serve a customer wearing a niqab, the hospital’s administrators consider the complete covering of the face and body to be a security issue.

Does this mean that Bangladeshis are Islamophobes?

According to The Arab Times:

Bangladesh Hospital Bans Burqa to Prevent Theft

DHAKA, March 22, 2010 (AFP) — Bangladesh’s largest state-run hospital has banned staff from wearing full-face burqas after an increase in thefts of mobile phones and wallets from wards, a hospital chief said Monday.

Female staff have been ordered to wear standard uniforms, which do not cover either the hair or face, while on duty at the Bangabandhu Medical University Hospital in Dhaka, senior administrator Abdul Majid Bhuiyan told AFP. Continue Reading →

German City Ban Israel Flag, could ‘Interfere with Passers-by’

From Israel National News with a thank you to Gates of Vienna:

by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu

(IsraelNN.com) Kassel, Germany has banned the Coalition against Anti-Semitism from displaying the blue-and-white Zionist flag because it might upset passers-by and threaten them, the nordhessische.de news service reported. However, city officials previously have approved showing the Iranian flag.

A woman identified by the news service as “Dorothee H.” said that officials told her she could not display the Israeli flag at an information booth she wanted to set up. Pro-Israelis previously have been threatened and attacked by anti-Zionist protestors in Germany.

“I told him that I could not understand this, and that we were not at all dangerous,” Dorothee H. said, but the city official said the booth could be set up only on condition that no Israeli flags were shown. The unnamed official told her that she had to be “considerate” of others.

Dorothee charged that “the employees of the public order told me that all the political information booths will be automatically reported to the national security. This is absurd. You expect the authorities to guarantee freedom of expression, rather than restricting it.”

“A supporter of the group’s claim added, “If somebody attacked the activists, the state must just intervene protectively.”

Women’s group sued over ‘Islam’ in name as it upsets…..Muslims.

Malaysia women’s group sued over ‘Islam’ in name

Sean Yoong ,  The Associated Press ,  Kuala Lumpur   |  Mon, 03/22/2010 2:41 PM  |  World

Muslim activists filed a lawsuit Monday against a Malaysian women’s group, asking it to remove the word “Islam” from its name on the ground that it misleads people to believe it speaks for all Muslims.

The suit against Sisters in Islam, one of the most well-known non-government groups in this Muslim-majority country, comes after it angered conservative Muslims by criticizing Islamic Shariah laws that allow the caning of women for offenses such as drinking alcohol.

Numerous Muslim groups have in recent months accused Sisters in Islam of misinterpreting religious principles, highlighting a divide between Muslims who demand strict enforcement of Islamic morality laws and others who fear religious intolerance is threatening the moderate practice of their religion.

The lawsuit was filed by Malaysian Assembly of Mosque Youths, whose leader, Mohammad Nawar Ariffin, said Sisters in Islam never obtained formal approval for the name with the government’s registrar of societies.

“The use of the word ‘Islam’ in names must be restricted and protected,” Mohammad Nawar told The Associated Press. “The so-called Sisters in Islam uses the word to attract attention, but it issues statements that contradict what other Muslims believe. It causes confusion among Muslims who might think that the group represents Islam.”

‘Yes I sent bombs, but no I’m not guilty’

NATIONALPOST… A man accused of almost a dozen attempted murders denied the charges today, but admitted to sending tainted water and explosive devices to a variety of people in Toronto and Guelph between 2004 and 2007.
Adel Arnaout, 39, told a Superior Court judge he did this to “scare” several of the recipients and to confuse police.
“I was frustrated with them,” the accused said of police, noting his primary objective was “to waste their time and money like they wasted my time and money.”
Mr. Arnaout’s frustration with police apparently stemmed from a number of run-ins in which he believed authorities failed to help him; at one point he called police about a “bullying” roommate, while another time he lodged a complaint about a talent agent who took his money but did not find him work.
Police “said they didn’t have time” to help, Mr. Arnaout testified.
Probed about the contents of the tainted water — the accused sent out four cases in 2004 to talent agencies, a judge and a bank — Mr. Arnaout said he injected a foul-smelling painkiller through the lids, knowing this would spur recipients to call police.
(The court has previously heard the water contained dimethyl sulfide, a posionous industrial solvent.)
Mr. Arnaout held a grudge against one of the talent agencies and against the CIBC bank over a credit dispute, but was on fine terms with the other recipients, he said.
“I wanted to confuse the police,” the accused testified under questioning by defence laywer Richard Stern.
He cited similar motives for sending out several explosive packages in 2007, noting two of them were designed with faulty igniters and thus posed no real harm.
Mr. Arnaout, clad in a dark suit and blue blouse, spoke quickly and quietly in a halting Lebanese accent.
His testimony resumes this afternoon.

UNICEF supports Palestinian hate ad

From Palestinian Media Watch. by Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik

Donor organizations to the Palestinian Authority have been challenged for years to prevent their well-intentioned contributions from being directed towards hate promotion by the PA, its institutions and its NGOs.

This advertisement is another example of the misuse of UN funding. An ad by a Palestinian youth organization, PYALARA, which is funded by UNICEF, shows an axe destroying a Star of David. The UNICEF logo is right on the ad. The large Star of David that has been destroyed has on it pictures of stars and stripes, presumably representing the USA, and an additional smaller Star of David.

The organization PYALARA (Palestinian Youth Association for Leadership and Rights Activation) has been funded by UNICEF since the year 2000: “PYALARA has been chosen by UNICEF as a major strategic partner in Palestine.” [PYALARA website] Continue Reading →

Horror of Islam in Nigeria

Approximately 140 million people inhabit Nigeria, the most populated country in Africa. The country is divided by ethnic and religious differences. 60% of the population is Muslim living mostly in the North of the country. Christians mainly inhabit the South. The introduction of the Sharia law 10 years ago in 12 states provoked a series of riots throughout the country. In August 2004 the Islamic government in the Zamfara state threatened to demolish all churches considered as illegal structures, close all businesses belonging to Christians during Muslim prayers, and enforce a new law against clothing that is not compliant with Islamic law.

This 13-minute documentary considers the situation of the relations between the Catholic Church and Islam in northern Nigeria today, the tensions, the difficulties to be overcome, and efforts at reconciliation.

Pakistan: Mob of “pro-Taliban radicals” beats student to death for playing music

From Jihad Watch:

Emulating Muhammad’s profound hostility toward music. “Student beaten to death for playing music,” from Big News Network, March 20:

A student has died after being beaten to death by pro-Taliban radicals at a Pakistani university.

The beating, which occurred earlier in the week, culminated in the death of Anan Khan, who attended the University of Engineering & Technology in Peshawar.

He was severely beaten with several other students at the university by members of a student wing of the hard-line Jamiat-e Islami party.

Witnesses have said the IJT attacked Adnan for playing music.

Members of the IJT have a record of breaking up music appreciation functions and dance parties on the campus.
