OTTAWA — Library and Archives Canada was crawling with police officers and had 17 security guards on duty Sunday as the venue held the screening of a controversial documentary on Iran that had previously been cancelled and has become a symbol for free speech activists.

In the end the most rowdy people who showed up for a screening of the documentary Iranium, which critiques Iran’s nuclear program, were those who were cheering free speech.

Heritage Minister James Moore, who ordered Library and Archives to reschedule the screening after cancelling because it received threatening phone calls and complaints from the embassy of Iran, received a standing ovation when he addressed the crowd.

“The Iranian Embassy will never dictate what movies we watch in Canada,” Moore told the crowd. “President Ahmadinejad, you have no right to extend the theocratic bullying arm of your government onto Canadian soil in a building, an agency of the government of Canada, a stone’s throw from the Parliament of Canada. You will not tell the government of Canada, you will not tell a single Canadian, what movie we can or cannot watch.”

Organizer Fred Litwin, president of the Free Thinking Film Society, thanked everyone for coming and also thanked the Iranian Embassy.

“I want to send them a case of the finest Israeli wine,” Litwin said. “I really owe them a debt of gratitude.”

Litwin guessed that if the screening hadn’t been cancelled, they may have had 200 people turn up. Instead, they sold their capacity of 370 tickets ahead of time and had to turn away about 60 more who showed up without tickets.

Security was tight with a mandatory coat check, which eventually had to be eliminated because they ran out of hangers, and a woman quickly checking bags after tickets were presented.

Security guards circled the perimeter of the building while police officers stood outside the front doors, in the lobby, in the reception area and in the theatre.

Vincent Turgeon, a spokesman for Library and Archives Canada, wouldn’t comment on how much they had increased security and reiterated that the reason for the cancellation was because of “suspicious letters.” Asked to respond to the minister’s charge that his organization made a mistake, Turgeon said: “It’s entirely within his prerogative to make those comments. Library and Archives just chose to take the necessary precautions to make sure the collection, staff and public would be perfectly safe.” Continue Reading →

Massive riots, Churches burned to protest light blasphemy sentance in Java

All this of course in the best example of the moderate Muslim country of Indonesia. For more on this story please click here:

Indonesia, the one example of peaceful Islam.

From Asia News:

Java, 1500 Muslim extremists attack an Ahmadi family: three dead, cars and houses in flames
by Mathias Hariyadi
Moderate Muslims and members of civil society condemn sectarian violence. Controversy around President Yudhoyono and the executive, unable to ensure security and protection of minorities. Muslim scholar: strike those who “use violence and manipulate Islam for political ends.”

Jakarta (AsiaNews) – Members of civil society, religious leaders and personalities from the moderate Islamic world strongly condemn the attack that took place yesterday against the Ahmadi community in Indonesia, which has caused death and devastation. The controversy has also embroiled President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the executive, unable to guarantee the safety of all citizens and freedom of worship in the country. The head of state warned that the violence against minorities “in the name of religion” must be stopped, despite his appeal, there is increasing lack of confidence in his abilities.

The latest in a long streak of blood against the Ahmadi community – a victim of violence in other Muslim-majority nations such as Pakistan – took place yesterday morning. A crowd of at least 1500 Muslim extremists attacked the house of a family in the village of Umbulan, in the Cikeusik sub-district, Pandeglang regency (Banten province on the island of Java), torturing the occupants. The toll of the assault is three dead, several injured people, two cars and a house burned.

The episode has raised controversy and fuelled the political confrontation that, in recent weeks, has involved the Indonesian president, unable to guarantee security and the right to religious freedom. Daniel Sparingga, a spokesman for Yudhoyono, revealed that an order has been issued by the President to the Chief of Police, calling for an end to violence. “Enough is enough – said the head of state – violence and attacks against any minority, made in the name of religion, must be stopped.”

However, members of civil society and moderate Muslim leaders – condemning the attack – have denounced the lack of interest shown to date by Yudhoyono, unable to curb sectarian violence. Ulul Huda, a Muslim scholar from Central Java, confirmed to AsiaNews, “the inertia of the government,” adding that “the Ahmadis in the past have contributed to the struggle for independence in Indonesia. Speaking of the attackers, the scholar labels them “extremists” who “use violence and manipulate Islam for political ends.”

The Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the leading moderate Muslim organization in the country has also condemned the attack on the Ahmadiyya community, along with Setara and the Wahid Institute. Professor Azyumardi Azra, from the State Islamic University in South Jakarta , explains to AsiaNews that “violence in the name of religion against certain groups, including the Ahmadis or any other, can not and should not be tolerated.”

The Ahmadi sect is considered heretical because it does not recognize Muhammad as the last prophet. It is the victim of attacks in Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and many other countries where Islam is the most prevalent religion. According to preliminary reports, the mob’s anger was unleashed by rumours of an alleged “invasion” of the village of Umbulan by dozens of Ahmadi. In fact, some non-native Ahmadis came to the village to solve a problem related to residence permits. A Filipino woman, the wife of an Ahmadi faithful has started procedures to regularize the situation with the immigration office.

Muslims Attack Two Christian Families in Egypt, 11 Killed

AINA.ORG

Posted GMT 2-3-2011 2:57:58

(AINA) — News of a massacre of two Christian Coptic families by Islamists just emerged from Upper Egypt with the return of the Internet connections after a week of Internet blackout by the Egyptian regime. The massacre took place on Sunday, January 30 at 3 PM in the village of Sharona near Maghagha, Minya province. Two Islamists groups, aided by the Muslim neighbors, descended on the roof of houses owned by Copts, killing eleven Copts, including children, and seriously injuring four others.

Anba Agathon, Bishop of Maghagha, told Coptic activist Dr. Mona Roman in a televised interview on Al-Karma TV that the killers are their neighbors, who seized the opportunity of the mayhem prevailing in Egypt and the absence of police protection to slaughter the Copts. He said that he visited today the four injured Copts, who escaped death despite being shot, at Maghagha General Hospital and they told him that they recognized the main attackers as they come from the same village of Sharona. They gave the Bishop details of what happened.

“The two families were staying in their homes with their doors locked when suddenly the Islamists descended on them,” said Bishop Agathon, “killing eleven and leaving for dead four other family members. In addition, they looted everything that was in the two Coptic houses, including money, furniture and electrical equipment. They also looted livestock and grain.”

According to the Bishop the first group was led by Islamist Ibrahim Hamdy Ibrahim, who was joined by a gang of masked assailants. They accessed the roof of the house of Copt Joseph Waheeb Massoud through the roof of his Muslim neighbor Mahgoub el Khawaled. The armed men killed Joseph, his wife Samah, his 15-year old daughter Christine and 8-year-old son Fady Youssef

Another Islamist group led by Yasser Essam Khaled and several masked men simultaneously accessed the house of Copt Saleeb Ayad Mayez through the roof of his Muslim neighbor Mohamad Hussein el Khawaed. The Islamist shot dead Saleeb, his wife Zakia, his 4-year-old son Joseph, 3-year-old daughter Justina, his 23-year-old sister Amgad, mother Zakia and Ms. Saniora Fahim.

The police in Minya were called and they transferred the bodies in ambulances to Maghagha Hospital.

The Bishop denied any vendetta between the Copts and the Muslims. He called on the police to arrest the Islamist perpetrators immediately, as everyone knows they are the neighbors of the victims. He said “The massacre has nothing to do with the mayhem in Egypt, but the murderers took advantage of the lack of police protection and thought they could commit their crime and no one would notice.”

Coptic activist Dr. Hanna Hanna views the Mubarak era with its policy of impunity to be the cause of why Copts are targeted. “Why have those Islamists chosen those two Coptic families and not Muslim ones to slaughter and rob? I believe it is because they know that with Copts they can literally get away with murder.”

EDL founder claims he is target of Islamist death threat

The Guardian:

Photograph: Dominic Lipinski/PAThe founder of the English Defence League claims he has been warned that his life is in danger if he leads a protest in Luton.

Stephen Lennon, 28, said senior police officers were urging him to leave his home town ahead of the anticipated arrival of thousands of EDL supporters.

The militant anti-Islamist campaigner said he was under police protection. He claimed Bedfordshire police had issued him with an “Osman warning”, which are given by the police to advise individuals that they are at serious risk of being killed by someone who appears to have the capability to make good their threat.

Lennon, who routinely wears a bulletproof vest, said the warning followed a text message threatening to kill his children. Continue Reading →

Tommy holds his own against hostile BBC ‘journalist’ Paxman

I for one am very proud of this young man for managing a disingenuous hostile interviewer who’s intention was sabotage and not the dissemination of information. Tommy also showed how class plays into attitudes in England (for beter or worse) today as always. People who live in towns and cities like Tommy’s, they see the problem of massive destruction of local culture and history a lot differently than the well insulated upper classes.

Congratulations Tommy Robinson. You have won my admiration. Again.

~BREAKING NEWS~ MUSLIM HIT SQUAD ATTEMPTS TO MURDER EDL LEADER!

Its getting closer and closer to the time where people had better chose their priorities and decide with whom they feel allegiance.

From Logan’s Warning:

January 27, 2011

By admin

I was just informed by a mate in the UK that one of the leaders of the English Defence League (EDL) was shot at by a Muslim in full jihad mode.

“It is with regret that I have to give you this expected news, but tonight we have seen the religion of peace in their full glory. One of the EDL leaders Kevin Carrol has been targeted by Muslim gangs in Luton and has been shot at several times. Details are a little sketchy as armed police have the area contained at present. Kev and his family are safe I can confirm that much. More info to follow.”

Thankfully, Kevin is unharmed, but do not even begin to think that this is over! Far from it… I would not be surprised if civil wars break out across Europe because of the tides of Muslim immigration which heighten the tensions between Muslims & non-Muslims living there. The result is further disruptive occurences that Muslim immigrants inflict upon Eurpopean society. Muslim immigration which should have been halted years ago.

Here are two ugly previews of the violence that has started in the UK…

Attacks on Montreal shuls went unreported in 2010

From CJNews:

By DAVID LAZARUS, Staff Reporter Thursday, 27 January 2011 MONTREAL — Police in Cote St. Luc have revealed that “four or five” area synagogues were hit by vandals throwing rocks through windows a year ago using the same modus operandi as the attacks earlier this month, but Jewish community leaders decided not to make the news public.
“It was decided to keep the situation low key” to give police a chance solve the case, but no arrests were made, said Cmdr. Sylvain Bissonnette of Station 9.

He said the similarities between the attacks last year and this year point to the same perpetrator.

“We know the modus operandi, that’s for sure,” Bissonnette said in an interview last week with The CJN.

As in January 2010, “we know that it was only one individual [committing the attacks]. We have an idea of the model [of the car. At each location], the driver of the car got out, went to the trunk, opened it, took the rock and threw it at the window, closed the trunk and got back into the car.”

He said the method used in this year’s attacks matched last year’s almost exactly. In the 2010 incidents, rocks were also thrown through the windows of several synagogues, also in the dead of night, using what police think might be the same car.

Bissonnette said in both years, “almost the same [type of] rocks” were used.

As well, four months before the January 2010 vandalism, in September 2009, three synagogues in Cote St. Luc were hit, but video evidence was negligible. That vandalism was reported in the media.

Rabbi Reuben Poupko, chair of Federation CJA’s security co-ordinating committee, acknowledged the January 2010 vandalism, but said the affected institutions themselves preferred that the incidents not be made public.

The committee “did not want to pre-empt them,” he said.

Additionally, there was concern over triggering copycat incidents and handing a “victory to the vandals” by generating publicity, but that changed after the Jan. 16 vandalism due to the “cumulative effect” of having several incidents take place since September 2009.

On Jan. 16 this year, three synagogues and a school in Cote St. Luc, one synagogue in Hampstead, and another synagogue in NDG – the Shaare Zedek, discovered only the next day – were hit between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m., all with single rocks thrown through their windows.

All the targets were within a few minutes drive of one another.

Police were expecting to be able to confirm the sequence of this year’s attacks based on video evidence. Continue Reading →

Fatwa against Theresa May: Scotland Yard investigates Islamic poster campaign targeting Home Secretary

The Daily Mail:

By Gavin Allen
Last updated at 11:53 AM on 27th January 2011

Posters issuing a fatwa against Theresa May have appeared in South London, prompting an investigation by Scotland Yard.

The Metropolitan Police are seeking the source of the Wild West-style posters, which claim the fatwa has been issued ‘for the abduction, kidnapping and false imprisonment’ of various radical clerics.

A fatwa can – but not always – be interpreted as an incitement to kill, and is an order issued by scholars in the Islamic faith.
Death threat: One of the posters issuing a fatwa against Theresa MayDeath threat: One of the posters issuing a fatwa against Theresa May

In Sunni Islam a fatwa is considered non-binding, while in Shia Islam it could be considered by an individual as binding.

The posters appeared at the same time as the Home Secretary announced in Parliament yesterday controversial reforms of control orders for terrorism suspects.

A link on the posters directs people to a website which states: ‘The current reality of Muslims living in Britain has unfortunately become very bleak; what was initially perceived by some, to be a malicious smear campaign against the Muslim community has now turned into something far more sinister.

‘Subsequently, as a response to this extremely critical situation and having been left with no other alternative, a Fatwa has been launched against the head of internal affairs and national security, Theresa May.

‘We understand the seriousness of this religious verdict, and will be releasing further information in due course.’

The website specifies high-profile Muslims such as Khalid al Fawwaz, 48, a Saudi Arabian with links to Osama Bin Laden who is currently fighting extradition to the U.S. on allegations of terrorism. Continue Reading →

A Statement From Sergio

Eeyore has previously posted an interview with Sergio Redegalli, the artist who painted a mural saying “NO” to burkhas. part 1,part 2.

Sergio has just released a statement:

STATEMENT FROM SERGIO REDEGALLI

Newtown has always been a safe haven for the unique varieties of people in Sydney. Newtown has always been, and hopefully will remain, a rich source of creative people. Newtown has for a very long time been an interesting mix of Australians coming from many different backgrounds, education and countries.

Newtown in the last 30 years has been on the leading edge for the creative arts, with many successful artists not just working in the area but committing to making Newtown their home.

This page is a step in clearing up some untruths spread about the ‘Say No To Burqas’ mural (‘the mural’) by a very small number of people.

THE ‘SAY NO TO BURQAS’ MURAL WAS PAINTED TO CREATE DIALOGUE AND TO HOPEFULLY ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO BE BETTER INFORMED ABOUT SOME VERY IMPORTANT ISSSUES CURRENTLY FACING AUSTRALIA TODAY.

As Australian Citizens we all have a duty to stand up and express ourselves on issues that are important to discuss and to do this always in a sensible and peaceful manner. We all have the right to express ourselves non-violently both verbally and creatively, via any form of media format without having to be fearful of physical abuse or vandalism to property.

There have been too many untruths made by people and groups who take very much care in not putting their names (as individuals as well as groups as a whole) to their beliefs.

Firstly, the ’Say No To Burqas’ mural has always and only been a starting point for debate and discussion, aside from graffiti and vandalism, it has never had the wording painted saying anything other than ‘SAY NO TO BURQAS’.

Point of fact, Islam is a Religious Ideology with its followers coming from many races all over the world and it is impossible to be racist towards a Religious Ideology.

Islam is more than a Religion; it is in fact a system of rule that guides all devout Muslims throughout their lives from the time of their birth to their death. Apart from its Religious element that most Western people understand the concept of, it also has a very clear and fixed set of legal rules, for almost every event in a Muslim’s life (SHARIA).It also has a political system within its structure clearly describing the aims, desired and results that would be the most beneficial for the expansion of Islam. I personally have discussed these sections with my Australian Muslim friends and I encourage anyone interested in understanding Islam to read more about the challenges facing Australian Muslims and the problems that they are facing because of minority groups who have extremist views that do NOT represent the greater Australian Muslim population.

Extremism does exist; every time any we fly overseas we are exposed to the measures that airport security under take to combat this risk. This year, the majority of Australian Coptic Christians had their Christmas celebrations cut short due to terrorism threats made towards them for their celebrations held on the 7th January 2011, after several Sydney Churches were targeted. (Terror threats sour Coptic Christmas services http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/01/07/3108477.htm?site=sydney). The list goes on.

One very important fact for all Australians to understand is that the burqa and niqab are not a necessary part of Islam. This ruling was made clear to all Muslims around the world by Sheikh Mohamed Tantawi, the dean of al-Azhar university, when he stated that “full-face veiling (is) a custom that has nothing to do with the Islamic faith”. (Egypt’s highest Muslim authority has said he will issue a religious edict against the growing trend for full women’s veils, known as the niqab. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8290606.stm).

An important reason for a law to be passed in Australia regarding all forms of full-face covering worn in public spaces, is that we live in a land where reasonable rules make more sense. We as Australians like being one united country, not a divided one. We have rules that we have all been following in the past, not because they are Law, but because they give all people a feeling of safety. Australians understand that taking off our motorcycle helmets in banks and other sensitive areas is a normal practise, that people walking the streets with their faces fully covered for no apparent reason is out of the norm.

Australians have worked very hard in creating a balanced and non discriminative society. Let’s not let our good will be used against the common good of all Australians. This issue is not about the clothing, it is about the direction of Australia, and the type of community we wish to live in, one that is clear about what is suitable in Australia and what is not. We have rules that clearly state that public nudity is not appropriate and creating rules that state that 100% full-face coverings in public spaces are not appropriate is just as balanced.

Some people may say it is the right of a woman to make a choice of covering themselves 100%, however I ask one very simple question, who is going to protect and allow for the freedom of choice to the next generation of young girls born into these family groups that will control all aspects of their dress code, education and the types of friends they will be allowed to know.
