Rape victim receives 101 lashes for becoming pregnant
A 16-year-old girl who was raped in Bangladesh has been given 101 lashes for conceiving during the assault.

The girl’s father was also fined and warned the family would be branded outcasts from their village if he did not pay. According to human rights activists, the girl, who was quickly married after the attack, was divorced weeks later after medical tests revealed she was pregnant.
The girl was raped by a 20-year-old villager in Brahmanbaria district in April last year.
Bangladesh’s Daily Star newspaper reported that she was so ashamed following the attack that she did not lodge a complaint.
Her rape emerged after her pregnancy test and Muslim elders in the village issued a fatwa insisting that the girl be kept in isolation until her family agreed to corporal punishment.
Her rapist was pardoned by the elders. She told the newspaper the rapist had “spoiled” her life.
“I want justice,” she said.

Saudi girl, 13, sentenced to 90 lashes after she took a mobile phone to school

A 13-year-old Saudi schoolgirl is to be given 90 lashes in front of her classmates after she was caught with a mobile camera phone.
The girl, who has not been named, was also sentenced to two months in jail by a court in the eastern city of Jubail.
She had assaulted her headmistress after being caught with the gadget which is banned in girl schools, said Al-Watan, a Saudi newspaper. The kingdom’s use of such punishments has been widely condemned by human rights organisations.

Three years ago 16 schoolchildren, aged between 12 and 18, were each sentenced to between 300 and 500 lashes for being aggressive to a teacher.
Under Saudi’s Sharia or Islamic law, flogging is mandatory for a number of moral offences such as adultery or being alone in the company of an unrelated person of the opposite sex. But it can also be used at the discretion of judges as an alternative or in addition to other punishments.
Al-Watan said a court in the northeastern Gulf port of Jubail had sentenced the girl to 90 lashes inside her school, followed by two months’ detention.

Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al-Nahayan, the brother of UAE president and Abu Dhabi emir Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan, has been acquitted of charges of torture, his lawyer has said.
An Emirati court on Sunday acquitted Shiekh Issa despite a video tape of the 2004 incident showing him torturing an Afghan man with whips, electric cattle prods and wooden planks with protruding nails.
“The court acquitted Sheikh Issa after establishing he was not responsible,” for the torture, lawyer Habib al-Mulla said on Sunday.
“The court accepted our defence that the Sheikh was under the influence of drugs [medicine] that left him unaware of his actions,” al-Mulla said.
Bassam and Ghassan Nabulsi, former business partners of Sheikh Issa, who filmed and kept the video tape, were sentenced in absentia to five years each in prison.
The video tape was handed to the ABC News channel last April.
Sheikh Issa was charged with rape, endangering a life and causing bodily harm, the Gulf National newspaper reported.
The torture victim was identified by Nabulsi as an Afghan grain dealer, Mohammed Shah Poor, who the sheikh accused of short changing him on a grain delivery to his royal ranch on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi.
Al-Mulla said that Sheikh Issa, who has been in detention for the past seven months, would be released following the acquittal.
‘Blackmail’
Sheikh Issa’s lawyer said that he was on a high amount of medication and that he was also drugged by the Nabulsi brothers.
He told the court they had orchestrated the incident and filmed it to use as blackmail, the National reported.
A forensic medicine expert told the court in the previous hearing that the medication Sheikh Issa was on could “cause anger, suicide, violence, depression and loss of memory”.
Six other defendants faced charges for the 2004 incident, which took place in the oasis city of Al Ain.
Two of them were ordered to pay a “temporary compensation” of 10,000 dirhams ($2,724) to the Afghan, who can file a new lawsuit to claim full compensation, the lawyer added.
Three others employed at the farm where the torture took place were sentenced to between one and three years in jail. A guard at the farm was acquitted.
Savage beating
The tape shows Sheikh Issa viciously beating a worker in an empty stretch of the desert.
A man in a UAE police uniform is seen on the tape tying the victim’s arms and legs, and later holding him down as the Sheikh pours salt on the man’s wounds and then drives over him with his Mercedes SUV.
In a statement to ABC News in April, the UAE ministry of the interior said it had reviewed the tape and acknowledged the involvement of Sheikh Issa.
“The incidents depicted in the video tapes were not part of a pattern of behaviour,” the interior ministry’s statement said.
The government statement said its review found “all rules, policies and procedures were followed correctly by the police department”.
Nabulsi is now suing the sheikh in federal court in Houston, Texas, where he resides, alleging he also was tortured by UAE police when he refused to turn over the tape to the sheikh following their falling out.
“They were my security, really, to make my case that this man is capable of doing what I say he can do,” Nabulsi said in an ABC interview in April.
Nabulsi said Sheikh Issa ordered the recording of the tape because he liked to watch the torture sessions later in his royal palace.

World Food Program Says al Qaeda-Linked Militants Demanded Protection Money; 1 Million Left in “Dire” Need
CBSNEWS… The U.N. food agency is stopping aid distribution to about 1 million people in southern Somalia because of attacks against staff and demands by armed groups that aid groups remove women from their teams, the agency said Tuesday.
The World Food Program is moving staff and supplies to northern and central Somalia from six areas in the south that are largely controlled by the al-Shabab Islamist group, said Emilia Casella, a WFP spokeswoman. The U.S. State Department says al-Shabab has links to al-Qaeda.
“Up to a million people that have been dependent on food assistance in southern Somalia face a situation that is particularly dire,” Casella told reporters in Geneva.At least four of WFP’s staff have been killed over the past 18 months, and militants threatened and looted three of its offices in the south, Casella told The Associated Press.
Armed groups have also increasingly been demanding that the World Food Program and other aid groups remove women from their staff and pay tens of thousands of dollars in protection money to guarantee the aid workers’ security, she said.
The agency had tried to resolve the demands of armed groups through meetings with village elders, but was unable to win the necessary guarantees for the security of its staff and protection of its humanitarian work, Casella said.
“We need concrete guarantees from the leadership” of the armed groups, she said.
The World Food Program is now preparing for a mass exodus of hungry Somalis from the south to other parts of Somalia and to neighboring countries, she said.
The agency supplies aid to some 3 million people in the war-torn country, which is also struggling with drought and produces only a third of the food it needs every year.

A seven-year-old Pakistani girl and her family have been given asylum in Canada after reports the child was raped and left to die when her Christian father refused to convert to Islam.
The identities of Baby Neeha and her family are being protected by immigration officials, said human rights lawyer Chantal Desloges and One Free World International, a church that was instrumental in getting the family here.
The family arrived in Canada on Dec. 12 after a three-year battle by organizers to spirit them out of danger in Pakistan.
They are living in the Mississauga area and will be visited next month by Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, who was so touched by the family’s plight that he doled out a ministerial permit, of which he has only issued two.
Church founder Rev. Majed El Shafie said the family of seven have been hiding from extremists in Pakistan for about three years.
Baby Neeha, at the age of 21/2, was raped by the son of her father’s employer and left to die by the roadside, he said. No one was arrested for the crime.
“These horrific events took place because her father, who was Christian, refused to give in to pressure from his Muslim employer to convert to Islam,” El Shafie said.
The family went underground in Pakistan to hide from Muslim extremists who were seeking revenge for their non-conversion, he said.
“The family has lived for years in hiding and in constant fear of being discovered by the employer’s family or Islamic extremists,” El Shafie said. “We are thrilled that she’s finally in Canada.”
Organizers said the case touched Kenney who decided to help the family.
“This case truly broke his heart and he (Kenney) considers himself lucky to have it within his powers to intervene,” Kenney’s spokesman Alykhan Velshi said yesterday. “Fortunately, they are now safely in Canada.”
Kenney found out about the family’s plight six months ago, Velshi said.
“He personally issued a special ministerial permit,” he said. “There were significant difficulties in getting them out of Pakistan.”
The family can now apply for permanent residency on humanitarian and compassionate grounds, Velshi said.

OK this is the worst thing I have seen for a while. I am going out for something fun now for a bit. This does me in. Islam in it’s day to day activities, in it’s normal course of action commits acts of horror that I would not have been able to think of if it was my full time job to do so.

| A man who encouraged his teenage son to marry and rape his 12-year-old cousin has been jailed.
The 54-year-old organised a sham Muslim ceremony between his son, then 16, and the girl at his home in Woolwich, south-east London, in March last year. At Wood Green Crown Court the boy got an 18-month supervision order for rape. The fathers of the boy and girl were both jailed for three years for inciting a child to engage in sexual activity following an illegal marriage. The boy’s mother, 54, was given a 12-month jail term, suspended for two years, for the same offence. She was also ordered to do 200 hours of community service.
The case came to light when the mother of the girl, who objected to the arranged “marriage”, told police about it. Scotland Yard child abuse detectives then discovered several relatives of the boy had urged him to rape his cousin. In a statement, the girl’s mother said: “What happened to my daughter was a nightmare. These convictions will help us move on.” Speaking after the case, Det Insp Noel McHugh, who led the investigation, called it a “really awful crime”. He said: “This has been an exceptionally challenging investigation and we are grateful to all those who assisted with the case and ensured the convictions. “The offences are incomprehensible and the victim is a truly brave girl who suffered at the hands of those who should have offered her protection.” The girl’s father, 29, and the boy, now 17, were ordered to sign the sex offenders register. Judge condemns ‘sex ring’ charges delay

A JUDGE has comdemned an eight-month delay in bringing charges against an alleged sex ring accused of attacks on girls as young as 13 as “absoluttely scandalous.”
He said it was a “lamentable failure” on the part of the Crown Prosecution Service, who had waited since March to bring the men to court following their arrest.
Members of the alleged eight strong sex ring were arrested in March in a series of early morning raids after being linked to a year-long series of sexual offences, committed around Rotherham, involving three 13-year-old girls and one adult.
But they were later released on police bail and had not been brought to court until their appearance at Rotherham Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
District Judge John Foster strongly criticised the eight month delay in bringing the men—charged with a total of 16 rapes—to court.
Addressing CPS prosecutor Mark Hughes, Mr Foster said: “The complainants are 13 and 14 years of age and you are telling me that it’s acceptable to conduct an eight month Crown Prosecution review of the case before bringing these men to court? I can’t believe it.
“These are children who are going to have to give evidence about these allegations.
“They face the prospect of being cross-examined, assuming not guilty pleas are entered by one or more of the defendants. Someone has to explain this to me, it’s absolutely scandalous.”

“Honour killings” are now running at the rate of one a month, it has emerged, following a shocking rise in violent crimes committed in Britain in the name of religion.

The number of murders, rapes and assaults on people who dare to break strict religious or cultural rules is doubling every year, police figures show, with up to two violent “honour crimes” being committed every day.
But charities which help victims of honour crimes say the true extent of the problem is far worse than the statistics show, as every year hundreds of vicitms – normally women – are too frightened to report attacks or to give evidence in court.
The escalating problem was highlighted yesterday as an Old Bailey jury convicted Mehmet Goren, 49, of the cold-blooded and premeditated murder of his 15-year-old daughter Tulay after she fell in love with someone from the “wrong” branch of Islam.
Miss Goren disappeared 10 years ago after telling a friend she might be pregnant but justice caught up with her father after his wife “courageously” testified against him and lifted what was described as the “cloak of secrecy” which surrounds honour crimes.
A prosecutor said the case was a “wake-up call” to the authorities over the extent of the problem in this country, which campaigners say is growing because of the rise of religious fundamentalism. Continue Reading →
