Pakistan: Asia Bibi, a Christian jailed on false “blasphemy” charges, to spend another Christmas in prison

Does Pakistan think it makes its Islamic republic look strong and powerful to persecute this woman and reduce her to this state? Quite to the contrary, it conveys a sense of fear, both that Islam cannot stand on its own merits in the free market of ideas, and of angering violent Islamic supremacists who may turn on the state that has allowed them to run amok.

As with the recent roundup of Ethiopian Christians in Saudi Arabia, Pakistani authorities’ display of power here is ultimately a display of weakness.

And for the first time since the assassination of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, who was killed by his bodyguard in January last year, Asia has found herself before a large group of people so far, in fact, she could only speak with her husband and the lawyer during the weekly interview with relatives.It was Taseer who called the law a “black law” before he was assassinated.

Barbaric textbooks handed out in Saudi Arabian schools teach children how to cut off a thief’s hands and feet under Sharia law, it has emerged.

The shocking books, paid for and printed by the Saudi government, also tell teenagers that Jews need to be exterminated and homosexuals should be ‘put to death’.

Recent editions were obtained by the Institute for Gulf Affairs in Washington, D.C., which says they should raise fears in the West over the use of jihadist language.

The books were published and handed out to 9th and 10th-graders despite Saudi Arabia’s promises to clean up textbooks in the kingdom.

Ali Al-Ahmed, director of the Institute for Gulf Affairs, told Fox News: ‘This is where terrorism starts, in the education system.

‘They show students how to cut (the) hand and the feet of a thief,’ he said.

The textbooks were printed for the 2010-2011 academic year and translated from Arabic by the institute.

In one, for ninth-graders, students are taught the annihilation of the Jewish people is imperative.

One text reads in part: ‘The hour (of judgment) will not come until the Muslims fight the Jews and kill them. There is a Jew behind me come and kill him.’

Pakistan: ‘675 women, girls’ killed for honour in first 9 months of year

Islamabad, 20 Dec. (AKI) – At least 675 Pakistani women and girls were murdered during the first nine months of the year in so-called honour killings, according to a news report, citing a senior official in the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.
Many of the victims were gang raped before being killed, the unnamed official said. At least 71 victims of the killings committed for allegedly defaming family honour were under 18 years old, the AFP news agency reported.

At least 19 were killed by their sons, 49 by their fathers and 169 by their husbands, AFP reported. Many of the victims were accused of having affairs or marrying without permission The Commission reported 791 honour killings in 2010 and there was no discernible decrease this year, the official added.

‘Mohamed liked to sleep with Children’

That would, according to this judge, be A OK. But because she had said what she did say, specifically that “Mohamed had a thing for young girls”, that was a statement punishable by jail. If she doesn’t pay the fine that is.

I can only assume this is because saying it one way is mocking the religion or its principle deities and personages while saying it the other way is a dry statement of fact.

Even so, I am quite confident that had she said the other, she would have been charged with stating a fact in a context offensive to a “legally recognized religion” but had she said it the other way it would have been perfectly acceptable as a form of humor.

Once again, the words of Christopher Hitchens haunt us all…

I have no idea what Elisabeth plans to do next and probably neither does she. But I know what we must all do.

Make T shirts mocking Islam the way the fashionable and young do about Jesus.

Make sure you speak the truth loudly about Islam everywhere you can.

Mock Islam the same way the left mocked Bush and continues to do so to the Republican party. After all, people can chose to be Muslim or republican (although rarely both) and mockery of either one is not racism no matter how many times that meme is howled by the sanctimonious.

Because freedom of speech is a use it or lose it proposition. The moment we tacitly agree to not say certain things for whatever reason, the law fills up the vacuum and you lose the choice to say it.

This includes holocaust denial. Because recent history shows us that suppression of lies causes them to flourish while suppression of the truth makes slaves of us all. Let all say what they may and let the light of day sort out the truth of it.

More than three thousand angry Christians held a protest rally in Lahore yesterday condemning sale of shoes incorporating Christian crosses.

Some Muslim leaders joined the protestors, who were wearing black armbands and headbands. Chanting anti government slogans, they burned tires on the road.

The protest ended after pastors led hymn singing.

“This is no drama. Our Christian identity has been insulted as Christmas approaches”, said Pastor Samuel King, president of the Pakistan Minorities Movement (PMM).

The group had previously confiscated 1,200 pairs of shoes, inscribed with a cross and Christmas symbols, from a shop. Its owner was arrested on November 26 but freed by police after three days.

Gulzar Nqavi, a Shia Muslim who joined the protestors, condemned the indifference of the authorities. “Many Christians visit Muslim shrines; they also hang posters of Nalain Pak (sandals of the Prophet Mohammad) in their houses”, he said.

The PMM also issued a press statement demanding the re-arrest of the shopkeeper and announced a continued movement in absence of any action. Continue Reading →

Dozens of young punk rock fans have had their heads shaved and body piercings confiscated after police in Indonesia said they were a threat to Islamic values.

The 59 male and six female music lovers were also stripped of dog-collar necklaces and chains and then thrown in pools of water for ‘spiritual’ cleansing, police chief Iskandar Hasan said.

After replacing their ‘disgusting’ clothes, he handed each a toothbrush and barked ‘use it’.

The 65 youths were then sent to a police school to receive mental and spiritual guidance for ten days. Only then are they are allowed to return home.

It was the latest effort by authorities to promote strict moral values in Aceh, the only province in the secular but predominantly Muslim nation of 240million people to have imposed Islamic laws.

Adultery is punishable by stoning to death; homosexuals have been thrown in jail or lashed in public with canes; women are told that wearing headscarves is a must, but tight trousers are banned.

 

Punk rockers have complained for months about harassment, but Saturday’s round-up was by far the most dramatic treatment they have yet been subjected to.

The Dutch Ambassador to Egypt, Susan Blankhart was called to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, today, to protest ‘defamation of Islam’ in a new book by the Hon. Geert Wilders.  Wilders’ book is scheduled to be released here in the US, next April.  The Egyptians were likely using this  opportunity  as a media  event. We note that this occurred while our State Department’s conference on The Istanbul Process Combating Intolerance conference was taking place  in DC.  With representatives from member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the EU, the OSCE, gathered in Washington why miss an opportunity to stifle any criticism of Islam and deny Free Speech?  After all this plenary session in DC is developing ‘best practices’ to rein in religious intolerance.  How Orwellian of them.

Egyptian Human Rights blogger, Mahmoud Elsokby posted the Al Ahram report about  this most recent example of intolerance by Egypt in the throes of electing a majority Muslim Brotherhood and Salafist parliament, “Egypt Summons Dutch Ambassador over anti-Islamic remarks”.

Egypt’s foreign ministry Wednesday summoned Dutch Ambassador Susan Blankhart to protest against what it perceives to be a defamation of Islam by parliament member Geert Wilders.

According to Dutch reports, Wilders is set to release a book in April next year to “examine the true nature of Islam.”

The right-wing politician is no stranger to controversy, having released numerous statements that were deemed defamatory to Islam by the Arab and Muslim world.

His statements include accusing Islam of being violent by nature and saying that the Quran should be banned.

According to Egyptian diplomatic sources, the foreign ministry insisted it could not tolerate “such unacceptable acts that could affect the spirit of cooperation, which should prevail between countries.”

In June, a Dutch court cleared Wilders of inciting hatred and discrimination against Muslims.

Egyptian authorities have recently banned him from entering the country during a visit of a European Parliament delegation.

During the Balkans war of the 1990s, Alija Izetbegovi?, then Bosnia’s President, was championed by the Western media. For Western reporters, educated in the humanities, Bosnian Muslims were Europe’s new Jews besieged by Serbian nationalists – Europe’s alleged new Nazis. That Izetbegovic had been a longtime member of the Young Muslims, a secretive and once-Nazi affiliated movement, was conveniently overlooked. Izetbegovi?, for the Western press, was more than a victim, and more than a “moderate Muslim.” He was, in the view of reporters embedded in Bosnian hotels, a defender of the multiculturalism that was under attack from the Serbs (Orthodox Christians).

It seems curious today, but probably the only people in the West – certainly in Britain, at least – to challenge this rosy picture were the communists. Early on during the war, one communist organization held an exhibition of photographs of Serbian victims of Bosnian atrocities. It was, of course, ignored by the media.

Significant atrocities were, of course, conducted by Serb forces. Nevertheless, the media, we are led to believe, is composed of “experts.” But, if reporters – allegedly after the truth – ignored photographic evidence of the frequently conducted Bosnian atrocities, and if one or two reporters may even have doctored evidence against the Serbs, universally ignored was Izetbegovi?’s own long term plan to tear down the old (semi-communist) system and establish an Islamic state in its place. The articulators of knowledge in the West have completely undermined reality

Raymond Ibrahim’s testimony to the US House of Representatives Human Rights Committee; on Shariah, Dhimmitude & the Copts; is a moving and eloquent absolute must watch.

In fifteen short minutes Mr Ibrahim amply demonstrates how the contemporary persecution of Coptic Christians in Egypt is a direct mirror of identical suffering meted out to his people for the fourteen previous centuries, using historical sources to back up his case.

This is no “accidental aberration” he conclusively proves, by pointing to the Quranic injunctions – the literal commands of god – that instruct Muslims to behave in the ways that lead to the inevitable suffering of any non-Muslim who falls under the reach of Islam’s power.

He also delves persuasively and depressingly into the historical events, and current dangerously misguided modes of thought (from history classes to the media), which have conspired to erect the “intellectual hurdles” that make unintelligible to a contemporary audience…

As a Coptic Christian Egyptian female I can’t even begin to imagine the life that the political activist Cynthia Farahat has led, let alone the deep terror which must be filling her heart at the prospect of the future awaiting her and her people.

There will be the childhood and young life marred and marked by oppression, fear and persecution; the religious, academic and political exclusion; and the constant threat of violence, abduction, robbery and rape. With the months and years ahead promising nothing more than worse, much worse, to come.

A French minister said there was no such thing as moderate Islam, calling recent election successes by Islamic parties in Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia “worrying” in an interview published Saturday.

Jeannette Bougrab, a junior minister with responsibility for youth, told Le Parisien newspaper that legislation based on Islamic sharia law “inevitably” imposed restrictions on rights and freedoms.

Bougrab is of Algerian origin, whose father fought on the French colonial side during Algeria’s war of independence, and said she was speaking as “a French woman of Arab origin.”

 “It’s very worrying,” she was quoted as saying. “I don’t know of any moderate Islam.”
“There are no half measures with sharia,” she added. “I am a lawyer and you can make all the theological, literal or fundamental interpretations of it that you like but law based on sharia is inevitably a restriction on freedom, especially freedom of conscience.” Continue Reading →

THE family of an Australian man sentenced to 500 lashes and a year in jail in Saudi Arabia fears he will not survive the punishment.

Mansor Almaribe, from the Victorian town of Shepparton, was yesterday found guilty of blasphemy by a Saudi Arabian court.

The 45-year-old father of five was arrested in the city of Medina on November 14 while making the hajj pilgrimage and accused of insulting companions of the prophet Mohammed.

It’s reported he was reading and praying in a group when accosted by religious police and arrested.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said the Australian ambassador in Saudi Arabia,  Neil Hawkins, had been in touch with authorities to plead for leniency. Continue Reading →
