Vilks murder plot suspects acquitted

Three men accused of plotting to kill Swedish artist Lars Vilks were acquitted of the charges in Gothenburg on Friday, but were nevertheless convicted for weapons violations.

The prosecutor had sought to have the men sentenced to three years in prison, but the Gothenburg District Court ordered the three men released from custody following the conclusion of the trial in December.

“As they were released following the hearing, it wasn’t unexpected that the main charges were thrown out,” prosecutor Agnetha Hilding Qvarnström told TT on Friday after the verdict was announced.

However, she added that she had no regrets about filing charges against the men.

“They were held in remand for a long time and they ordered held in remand on several occasions. The matter was tested in court and I believe there was reason to indict them,” she said.

London Conway Hall meeting on the Subject of Blasphemy to Take place on 28 January 2012

ICLA:

An important meeting, organised by ‘The Centre for Enquiry UK’ will take place in London’s Conway Hall (25 Red Lion Square, Holborn) on Saturday 28 January 2012.  The title for the event is “BLASPHEMY!” which is very apt given the content of United Nations Resolution 16/18 and the subsequent development of the ‘Istanbul Process’.  The EU’s decision to host the next ‘Istanbul Process’ meeting has put the issue of ‘defamation of religion’ to the centre of politics right across Europe.  It is very important for the cause of freedom that the ‘Istanbul Process’ be opposed as it seems to be driven by a desire to place severe and unwarranted restrictions on freedom of expression.

The March for Free Expression (MfFE) took place in Trafalgar Square on 25 March 2006 in the aftermath of the deliberately manufactured Danish cartoon crisis.  The MfFE event publicised the problem of the erosion of the right to freedom of expression caused by the actions of religious agitators who demand respect for their opinions and unquestioning obedience to their dogmas.  In the intervening period, not only have politicians not addressed the problem but have actively made it worse and in the process made the people of Britain less free.  Now, nearly 6 years later the campaign against free speech has reached the point where it is on the verge of formal abolition within the European Union.

Not only should the European Union not be hosting the next meeting of the ‘Istanbul Process’ it should be actively opposing it.  Freedom of expression is the most basic and most sacred Western freedom, without which the West will no longer be the West and the people of the West will be little more than slaves.  Surely it is now time for people everywhere to stand up and shout out with one voice that freedom of expression is a non-negotiable right.

More information about the event at Conway Hall can be found at the website of ‘The Centre for Enquiry UK’.

University atheist society president forced to resign after cartoon of Muhammad having a drink with Jesus is posted on Facebook

DAILY MAIL:

A row has erupted over an atheist society at a top London University posting a cartoon sketch featuring the prophet Muhammad having a drink with Jesus on its Facebook page.

A student Muslim group is demanding the ‘offensive’ image of Jesus and Mo having a drink at the bar, taken from an online satirical sketch, be removed from the social networking site.

The president of the Atheist, Secularist and Humanist society at the prestigious University College London (UCL), Robbie Yellon, has stepped down over the controversy.

HELSINKI TEACHER OF ISLAM ALSO EXPECTED TO WEAR VEIL BY PARENTS OF IMMIGRANT STUDENTS

The teacher, Tuija Rinnie, happens to also be a convert to Islam, but that wasn’t enough for some of the muslim immigrant parents, she had to be covered up in the hijab as well. It almost humorous to read how much of a shock it was to her, being not only expected to cover up, but being ridiculed for teaching belly dancing as well. KGS

NOTE: She’ll be used by the multiculturalists as prime example of how to get along with Muslim Immigrants. Just convert and join the crowd! Got to be at the table if you want to influence! At least that’s the well used meme here in Finland.

Helsinki teacher was also expected (by parents) to wear a veil

I hope that through my story would arise a discussion of Finnish immigrant children in schools and in society, says the Arabic language teacher Tuija Rinne.
Rinne teaches in a school in Helsinki. Previously, she taught the religion of Islam. Some of the children’s parents were requiring that Rinne wear the veil, as the women may have used Muslim culture.
– This is a small but vocal number of parents. They do not always tell their opinions directly, but I got wind of it through back channel sources.
– When I’m done with a direct interaction with their parents, consensus is often born. Some have even asked me privately for forgiveness.
In extreme cases, some parents have forbidden their children to participate in Rinne’s classes. Rinne says that the case in question, she is not accused of anything. The Muslim parents’ behavior is based on the fact that they did not believe her, as a Finn, to be qualified to work as a teacher of Islam. For them, the use of the veil would be evidence of eligibility.
– They have been proven many times that I have a degree from the University of Helsinki, and I am qualified to serve as a teacher.
Most of the Helsinki metropolitan area, and Islam and the Arabic language teachers have an immigrant background. Rinne says her experience of pressure from the parents, to be a very tough.
– Fortunately, I have had the full support of my employer. Rinne does not want to bring any particular point out that her religion is Muslim, because it is to her a personal matter.
– Finnish law is clear that teachers of religion  do not need to be a member of that denomination. Besides, the world is full of millions of Muslim women who do not use a veil. Some of the students’ parents have been even shocked that in Rinne’se free time, she teaches oriental dance, or belly dancing.
According to Rinne, some of the pressure is partly due to the fact that some children have had difficulties to succeed in the classroom. If the child has received a poor test grade,  it has been interpreted that the teacher is teaching badly.
– This, however, sometimes students do, regardless of cultural background. Now the situation has calmed down around Rinne, because she can now concentrate on just teaching the Arabic language. Since last autumn the same teachers do not teach anymore in Helsinki, Islam, and immigrants in their native language.
For example, in Vantaa, such a differentiated practice has been in the past. Rinne believes that the difficulties experienced are part of the challenge of multiculturalism that Finnish schools and society are facing.

A British engineer is facing a month in jail after he told colleagues in a meeting, ‘When will we finish with the damn mosques?’

The worker, who has not been named, told an appeals court yesterday that he did not mean to insult the Islamic religion.

The British engineer works at the parks and recreation section of Abu Dhabi Municipality, and is appealing against a one-month prison sentence imposed by the Court of Misdemeanours.

He was in charge of a project to create gardens around a mosque, reports The National, an English-language publication based in the capital of the UAE.

The engineer told the court he lost his temper during a meeting because the project was progressing slowly.

He was then reported to the police by his work colleagues for asking the offending question. Continue Reading →

Iran: Blogger May Face Death Penalty for Insulting Islam

Global voices online:

A 50-year old Iranian blogger, Mohammad Reza Pour Shajari (aka Siamak Mehr), has been charged with “insulting the Prophet of Islam” and “enmity with God” or “waging war against God”, charges that could carry the death penalty in Iran. His trial on December 21, 2011 lasted only 15 minutes.

His daughter, Mitra Pour Sharjari, told Deutsche Welle’s Farsi service that her father told the judge he would not defend himself, because neither his lawyer, nor jury members, nor the media were there. He said, “One day, like Gaddafi, you will hide in a hole.” The judge replied that it makes no difference since, “Now we are here, and you, and people like you, will pay the price.”

Siamak Mehr was arrested in September 2010. In his blog, Iran Land’s Report, he would criticize the Islamic Republic and Islam with strong words.

In his last post on September 8, 2010 he said he considered Shi’ite clerics a mafia group who had wasted away Iran’s national resources since [the Islamic Revolution in] 1979.

Here is a video showing Siamak Mehr in chains, apparently on his way to court:

Shafia family adds insult to injury to Canada with grotesque lie about the police

This is surreal in its magnitude and transparency. I guess the only good thing one can say about the Shafia family is that they seem to be crappy liars although not un-practiced ones perhaps.

The fact that they claim that a Canadian police department would torture their son if they didn’t falsely confess to a murder is a horrific sort of lie, because it means that we have police forces that act likes ones in Islamic nations. And we most certainly do not.

Add to that, the easily caught lie that they never saw the pictures till after the murders when there is video of the father showing off the photo album before they happened.

I must admit, the CBC did a great clip on this. I take back 10% of the nasty things I have said about them.

Somali convert from Islam whipped in public

Christian Today:

A Somali convert from Islam was paraded before a cheering crowd last month and publicly flogged as a punishment for embracing a “foreign religion,” sources said.

Sofia Osman, a 28-year-old Christian from Janale city in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region, had been taken into custody by Islamic extremist al Shabaab militants in November; the public whipping was meant to mark her release. She received 40 lashes on Dec. 22 while jeered by spectators.

“Osman was whipped 40 lashes at 3 p.m., but she didn’t tell what other humiliations she had suffered while in the hands of the militants,” an eyewitness, told Compass, adding that whipping left her bleeding. “I saw her faint. I thought she had died, but soon she regained consciousness and her family took her away.” Continue Reading →

Sectarian clashes broke out in the southern Egyptian province of Assiut after a Christian student posted a drawing of the Muslim prophet on the Internet, officials said on Saturday.

The clashes, which spread to three villages, saw several Christian homes burned and left five police officers injured, a security official told AFP.

On Thursday, dozens of Muslims tried to storm the home of the Christian student after the drawing appeared online.

Police were called to the scene, arrested the student and formed a cordon around the house to prevent clashes, Assiut governor Abdelrahim Borei said.

But on Friday, a group of Muslims set fire to a shop owned by the student’s father in a nearby village and another group burned Christian homes in another neighbouring village and clashed with its residents.

Borei has called for an emergency meeting with political and church officials as well as with recently elected MPs and members of ultra-conservative Salafi Muslim groups to try to defuse tensions.

“The situation is now calm in the three villages. We have deployed police in the areas in order to maintain order,” Borei told state television.

Islam means failure, it means rape, it means women are not human

I’ve just come across this short video in which an Iranian woman describes her experience with Islam. Having watched it I don’t feel fit to comment. She should speak for herself.

Denigrating religious stupidity

EuropeNews 25 Dec 2011

By Henrik R. Clausen

While I was working on a polite essay ”What is ‘denigration’, really?”, events overtook the intended polite and analytical approach. At an Austrian court, Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff had her conviction for ”Denigrating the teachings of a recognized religion” upheld. The court deemed that her uttering ”an excess of opinion” about Muhammad having sex with minors, and that doing so was subject to a fine of 480 euros, alternatively 60 days in jail.

Many of us consider freedom of expression is a fundamental right in itself. Expressions used in criminal ways, like committing fraud or inciting violence is indeed a matter for the courts, but a victimless crime where not even a single Muslim protested that his faith had been ‘denigrated’, surely cannot be subject to legal action, fines or jail time. In a free society, that is.

The difference comes when the State as such submits to Islam. In that case, the supposed ‘sanctity’ of Islamic teachings obtain protection by the Law, and due to the Islamic tradition that the life of Muhammad was a perfect example for all (male) Muslims, everything Muhammad did is to be considered holy and thus protected from criticism. That includes his having sex with minors.

The implications of this are huge, for how are we to speak out against the tradition of child brides that still exist in many Islamic countries if we’re not even permitted to express any ”excess of opinion”, as defined by the Court? Would we have to run every possible criticism or sarcastic comment past the Court for approval before it is made public? What are people whose e livelihood consists of satire and mockery – stand-up comedians, satire magazines – supposed to do if they come across the idea to mock religiously sanctioned sexual relationships with minors, or those who justify them?

Also, according to the Courts of Austria, we are supposed to avoid the term ‘paedophilia’ when talking about old men having sex with prepubescent girls. For, according to the Court of Austria, ‘paedophilia’ denotes the urge to have sex with under age girls, not the actual act of doing so. Further, if these sexual relations continue until the girl reaches maturity, calling the relationship ‘paedophile’ is an excess of opinion that cannot be permitted. One wonders what Mr. Fritzl thinks of that decision…

There exist other and freer countries than Austria, for instance Denmark. Here it is still permissible to express negative opinions about religious stupidity or evil, as long as that is not directed against some minority group or others. Convictions do happen, however, if an ”excess of opinion” is directed against minority groups, as happened for Lars Hedegaard and Jesper Langballe, when they made passing references to the high frequency of sexual assaults within Muslim families.

But enough of the boring analysis, let’s get to what matters, namely denigrating some religious stupidity. Here’s a Top 10 of Islamic ”religious teachings” that deserve nothing but scorn and mockery. Let’s start with some benign and obvious issues:

  1. Islamic ‘science’:
    Bukhari:V4B54N430:
Allah’s Apostle, the true and truly inspired said, ‘Regarding the matter of the creation of a human being: humans are put together in the womb of the mother in forty days. Then he becomes a clot of thick blood for a similar period. He becomes a piece of flesh for forty days. Continue Reading →
