Son of Radical Islam Leader Killed in FBI Shootout Caught in Canada

Luqman Ameen Abdullah FOXNEWS… One of three people sought by the FBI was captured in Canada Thursday and two were still on the loose after a federal raid and deadly shooting of a radical Islam leader whose goal authorities say was to take down the U.S. government.
Federal authorities in Detroit said the son of 53-year-old Luqman Ameen Abdullah, who was killed in Wednesday night’s shootout with FBI agents, was arrested across the border in Windsor, Ontario.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police took 30-year-old Mujahid Carswell, who was considered armed and dangerous, into custody Thursday. No other details were released.

Carswell was among 11 people charged Wednesday in a criminal complaint in federal court in Detroit.

Andrew Arena, the head of the FBI office in Detroit, says the men follow “a very hybrid radical ideology” that mainstream Muslims “would not recognize.”

 Abdullah was killed in a gunbattle in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn as federal agents tried to arrest him on a number of charges including conspiracy to sell stolen goods and the illegal possession and sale of firearms.

Abdullah repeatedly told followers that the U.S. government was their enemy and they should be willing to fight the FBI, even if it meant death, according to the criminal complaint against him.

“You cannot have a nonviolent revolution,” Luqman Ameen Abdullah said, according to a 2008 conversation secretly recorded by a confidential FBI source.

Abdullah was killed Wednesday at a warehouse in Dearborn, where agents were attempting to arrest him. FBI spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold said Abdullah refused to surrender, fired a weapon and was killed by gunfire from agents.

He was one of 11 people named in a criminal complaint after a two-year investigation.

Among the others charged with Abdullah and in custody were a state prison inmate, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

Another man not named in the complaint also was arrested.

The 43-page complaint described Abdullah as an extremist who believed the FBI bombed New York’s World Trade Center in 1993 and the Oklahoma City federal building two years later.

Abdullah beat children with sticks at his Detroit mosque, the complaint claimed, and was trained with his followers in the use of firearms, martial arts and swords. Continue Reading →

Synagogues in L.A. on alert after shooting that police are investigating as a hate crime [Updated]

Adet Yeshurun Valley SephardicL.A. TIMES…Two worshipers at a North Hollywood synagogue were shot this this morning in an attack LAPD detectives are investigating as a hate crime. 

The shooting occurred at 6:20 a.m. at the Adat Yeshurun Valley Sephardic synagogue, at 12405 Sylvan St.

LAPD Deputy Chief Michel Moore said the shootings occurred in the underground garage of the temple. A man coming to the temple for worship parked his car in the lot and was approached by suspect who Moore said was wearing a black hoodie.

“Without any words,” Moore said, the suspect shot the man in the leg. Then the gunman fired on a second man who had arrived for prayers. That second victim was also wounded in the leg.

The gunman then fled from the garage. Witnesses called 911.

Moore described the victims as being in their 40s. He said both were in good condition.

Detectives are “working with [the victims] to understand more information,” Moore said.

Detectives don’t believe the motive was robbery, according to LAPD sources, who spoke to The Times on the condition that they not be named because the investigation is ongoing.

At about 7:40 a.m., Los Angeles police arrested a man near the synagogue but the sources say they don’t believe he was the gunman.

LAPD officials have alerted other synagogues around Los Angeles about the shooting, and police have stepped up patrols at Jewish religious institutions.

[Updated at 9:25 a.m.: The synagogue where the shooting occurred is in the heart of the San Fernando Valley’s Orthodox Jewish community and within walking distance of kosher markets and other synagogues. Many people have moved to the area so they can walk to temple.]

The sources said detectives are trying to determine the motive, and whether the gunman acted alone or as part of a larger group.

[Updated at 9:03 a.m.: LAPD detectives were reviewing security videotapes from the temple in hopes of better understanding the chain of events. They were also searching a nearby park to see if the suspect is hiding there.]

A FANATICAL Muslim group campaigning to impose sharia law on Britain wants to turn Buckingham Palace into a mosque, it was revealed last night.

Days before a potentially incendiary rally in central London, the hardline Islam4UK group claims to have uncovered historical evidence which challenges the right of the Queen to live at the royal property.

Notorious hate preacher Anjem Choudary is calling for the palace to be renamed Buckingham Masjid, the Arabic word for mosque.

The Mall, which approaches the palace, would become Masjid Road.

Choudary, the right-hand man of exiled cleric Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammed, spoke out as he urged Muslims across Britain to join Saturday’s rally to demand a complete overhaul of the British legal system and the introduction of sharia courts.

The protest is due to begin at 1pm outside the Houses of Parliament and end at Trafalgar Square, less than a mile from Buckingham Palace, raising concerns over security.

Last night angry politicians and fellow Muslims condemned Choudary’s comments.

Tory MP Philip Davies compared Choudary to the leader of the BNP, saying: “This man’s a complete idiot. He’s the Muslim equivalent to Nick Griffin. I’m all for free speech and people having the right to have their say but, equally, there are all these ridiculous laws the Government has introduced about inciting racial hatred. Quite clearly, that’s what he is doing.

“If these laws are in place, they have to work both ways – they can’t apply to just one group of people.”

In a rambling diatribe, Choudary wrote on the Islam4UK website: “There is a spark that has ignited and its flame has become unstoppable.

“In recent years the world has witnessed an Islamic resurgence which continues to grow in strength.

“We find ourselves in the year 2009, waiting for Rome to fall, waiting for the White House to fall and indeed waiting for Buckingham Palace to fall.”

Choudary said that under sharia law the Queen’s official residence in London would have a dome fitted and a tannoy system to call followers to prayer.

The Palace would be used as a judiciary court for handing down sharia punishments and a detention place for “prisoners of war”.

In addition, the building would become the headquarters of the Islamic States’ supreme leadership and the Department of Information and Culture.

Choudary also called for the Crown Jewels to be melted down into “more appealing jewellery, free from idolatrous engravings or symbols such as crosses or human beings”.

Islam4UK’s website shows mock-up images of the Palace as a mosque and the Crown Jewels being melted.

Choudary added: “At present, Buckingham Palace is nothing more than a hollow building exploited by the rich and withheld from any real use.

“Under the sharia this would never happen, rather the British community would see it converted into a flourishing mosque which would be of a great benefit, not only for those residing in London but also the country as a whole.”

The Islam4UK movement is made up of leading members of the banned radical al-Muhajiroun group which was once led by Choudary. Around 15 per cent of people convicted in the UK of terrorism-related offences in the last decade were either members of the group or had links to it.

The Centre for Social Cohesion last night warned of the dangers of Choudary’s preachings.

Houriya Ahmed, a researcher for the independent think-tank , said: “I think they are just doing this for publicity.

“Anjem Choudary is a ridiculous man. But that does not mean his ideology is not dangerous.”

Muslim leader Abdul Hamid Qureshi, chairman of the Lancashire Council of Mosques, said: “The sad fact is that this organisation is driving the agenda. What they are saying is totally wrong. They are only a small bunch of people. There is no sense in it – it is not Islam.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “We are discussing the potential demonstrations on October 31.”

(CNN) — Authorities in Malaysia have seized more than 20,000 Bibles in recent months because they refer to God as “Allah,” Christian leaders said Thursday.

The seizures have fed fears among minority groups, which see signs of encroaching Islamic fundamentalism in the predominantly Muslim but multi-racial country.

“There is a growing sense of Islamic assertion, yes,” said the Rev. Hermen Shastri, general-secretary of the Council of Churches of Malaysia. “There is some concern.”

The Bibles were written in the country’s official language, Malay — in which the word for God is “Allah,” as it is in Arabic.

However, Malaysia’s government says the word is exclusive to Islam.

Its use in Christian publications is likely to confuse Muslims and draw them to Christianity, the government says. So it has banned use of the word in Christian literature.

“Malay has borrowed from Arabic, just as it has from Sanskrit and Portuguese,” Shastri said. “We have maintained the community has the right to use the word.

“But I think this has ignited a cause in the Muslim communities, who are interpreting it as a siege on Islamic beliefs.”

A Home Ministry official directed requests for comment to the ministry’s Publications and Quran Text Control Department, which enforces the ban. An employee there redirected calls to a spokeswoman, who in turn asked CNN to call the Home Ministry back. Calls to other departments were similarly redirected.

A Roman Catholic weekly newspaper, The Herald, is challenging the ban in court after the government threatened to revoke its license for using the word in its Malay edition. Hearings on the case have gone on for two years.

“We quote it as it is. We cannot change the text of the Scripture,” Herald editor Father Lawrence Andrew told CNN last year. “I cannot be the editor of the Bible.”

Among the Bibles confiscated were Malay-language ones that the Bible Society of Malaysia said it had imported from Indonesia. About 10,000 others also were confiscated from Gideons International, which places free copies in hotel rooms and other places.

The Malaysian constitution provides for freedom of religion. The country has a dual-track justice system, in which Islamic courts operate alongside civil ones.

Rulings by the Islamic, or sharia, courts are directed toward the country’s Muslim, who make up 60 percent of the population. But they worry non-Muslims who see them as Islamism seeping into the moderate nation’s fabric.

In November, the National Fatwa Council — the country’s top Islamic body — banned Muslims from practicing yoga. It said elements of Hinduism in yoga can corrupt Muslims.

The council also bans short hair and boyish behavior for girls, saying they encourage homosexuality.

In northern Malaysia’s Kelantan state, authorities have forbidden bright lipstick and high-heeled shoes, saying the bans will safeguard Muslim women’s morals and dignity, as well as thwart rape.

And last month, an Islamic court judge in the eastern state of Pahang upheld a verdict to cane a Muslim woman for drinking beer in public.

The country has been mired in inter-faith disputes as well in recent months. In those cases, many non-Muslims complain that the civil courts generally cede control to Islamic courts.

Muslims cannot convert to other religions without the permission of the Islamic courts, which rarely approve such requests.

In relationships in which a Muslim parent has converted children to Islam over the objection of a non-Muslim parent, the sharia courts usually have upheld the conversions.

And earlier this year, a Sikh family lost a court battle to cremate a relative after officials said the man had converted to Islam years before his death, though the family said he hadn’t.

The common-law husband of a Quebec woman is demanding $300,000 for the release of his three children and wife, who swore in an affidavit that she has been held against her will in Saudi Arabia since 2005.

Samir Said Ramthi Al Bishi met with Canadian officials in Saudi Arabia on Sept. 22, at which time he demanded the cash in exchange for the release of his wife, Nathalie Morin, 25, a Longueuil woman and mother to the couple’s three children, ages 7, 3, and 11 months.

Canadian officials responded by saying Mr. Al Bishi’s demand is legal under Saudi law, so “we cannot take sides and will continue to consider the situation of Mrs. Morin and her three children as a private, family matter,” consular official Nathalie Tenorio-Roy told Ms. Morin’s mother, Johanne Durocher, in an email on Oct. 22.

“I’m completely scandalized that the government would pass on this demand to me,” said Ms. Durocher, who compared Mr. Al Bishi’s request for cash to a ransom demand. “You don’t buy your children,” she added.

Ms. Durocher said she has no intention of negotiating a payment for her daughter’s return, and has no money to do so anyway.

Meanwhile, information obtained by Bloc Quebecois MP Francine Lalonde under freedom of information reveals that Canadian consular officials suggested Ms. Morin’s children might be better off staying in Saudi Arabia without her.

“Maybe we will get the children to Canada — to be with their high-school-educated, 22-year-old mother,” an embassy official wrote in a memo on Oct. 19, 2006.

In another memo, sent the previous day, the official wrote: “We have higher priorities and I have spoken with Nathalie — not her priority either.”

Ms. Durocher rejected the official’s claim that bringing her children back to Canada was not a priority for Ms. Morin.

Her daughter might have told embassy officials she was prepared to leave her children in Saudi Arabia because she was demoralized from enduring beatings and not being allowed to leave the house, Ms. Durocher said.

But Ms. Durocher said that Ms. Morin, who visited Montreal for one month in 2006 without her children, went back to Saudi Arabia because she couldn’t bear being away from them.

Ms. Morin’s Montreal lawyer, Julius Grey, said he is studying the documents obtained under freedom of information to determine whether she has grounds to sue the government.

Ms. Morin met Mr. Al Bishi in 2001 in Montreal, where he was living illegally. He was deported in 2002, soon after she had a child by him. She moved to Saudi Arabia in 2005 after two visits there.

Gar Pardy, a former Canadian ambassador and expert on consular matters in Ottawa, called on the government to take a stronger stance on Ms. Morin’s behalf.

“The government has to stay involved by pushing the Saudis to do something appropriate,” he said.

Natalie Sarafian, press attache to Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon, noted that when Canadians leave Canadian territory, they are subject to foreign laws.

“Minister Cannon’s greatest wish is that this matter is settled and we are doing everything we can to enable this,” she said.

Ms. Sarafian added that Mr. Cannon met with Saudi Arabia’s Commission on Human Rights and raised the Morin case with his Saudi counterpart on Saturday during a visit to the Middle East.

Three Ontario men are being sought by the FBI on charges of conspiracy to commit federal crimes in the United States including the illegal sale of firearms and mail fraud.

The three were named in an Federal Bureau of Investigation operation that resulted in the shooting death of the leader of a radical Islamic group who allegedly preached violence against the government. Luqman Abdullah, 53, refused to surrender during an FBI raid near Detroit Wednesday and was shot and killed, police said.

Abdullah, also known as Christopher Thomas, and 10 others, including the Canadians, were named in a federal complaint unsealed Wednesday that alleges conspiracy to commit theft from interstate shipments, mail fraud to obtain the proceeds of arson, illegal possession and sale of firearms and tampering with motor-vehicle identification numbers.

The complaint says the 11 defendants are members of a group that is alleged to have engaged in violent activity over many years.

“In light of the information that the charged individuals were believed to be armed and dangerous, special safeguards were employed by law enforcement to secure the arrests without confrontation. During the arrests . . . the suspects were ordered to surrender. At one location, four suspects surrendered and were arrested without incident. Luqman Ameen Abdullah did not surrender and fired his weapon. An exchange of gunfire followed and Abdullah was killed. An FBI canine was also killed during the exchange,” the FBI said in a news statement.

The Canadians being sought in connection with the incident and facing charges of conspiracy to commit federal crimes are: Mujahid Carswell, 30, also known as Mujahid Abdullah; Mohammad Alsahi, 33, also known as Mohammad Palestine and Yassir Ali Khan, 30. It is unclear where in Ontario the suspects live.

According to the FBI, the man who was killed, Abdullah, was the local leader of the group which calls itself Ummah (the brotherhood) a group of “mostly African-American converts to Islam, which seeks to establish a separate Shariah-law governed state within the United States.”

The FBI says the Ummah is ruled by Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rap Brown, now in prison for the murder of two police officers in Georgia.

Once the investigation is complete, authorities will decide whether to seek a felony indictment on the charges.

Police in Windsor did not comment on the case Thursday morning.

When FBI agents at O’Hare arrested David Headley en route to Pakistan earlier this month on charges he plotted to kill a newspaper cartoonist in Denmark, authorities say he held an additional airline reservation — to Copenhagen.

He was to depart Thursday.

Headley’s friend, Tahawwur Hussain Rana, who shared an extreme hatred for cartoons that depicted the prophet Mohammed, arranged for the flight, authorities said.

Any depiction of the prophet, even a favorable one, is forbidden by Islamic law as likely to lead to idolatry.

The Chicago men, who knew each other from a military school in Pakistan, on Tuesday were accused of an international plot dubbed “The Mickey Mouse Project” that since late 2008 included scheming with others to “commit terrorist acts against overseas targets,” according to federal criminal complaints made public in Chicago.

The North Side men are accused of plotting to target employees of the Danish newspaper Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten, which published cartoons of the prophet Mohammed in 2005, sparking violent riots across the Muslim world.

The most controversial of the 12 cartoons depicted Mohammed wearing a bomb with a lit fuse as a turban. That cartoon was drawn by Kurt Westergaard, 78 — who was targeted for assassination, authorities said.

But Headley’s phone calls were wiretapped and his e-mails were under FBI review. When he tried to board his Pakistan-bound O’Hare flight Oct. 3, the FBI arrested him.

Headley, 49, then confessed to agents about the plot, authorities said. He was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit terrorist acts involving murder and maiming outside the United States and one count of conspiracy to provide material support to the alleged overseas terrorism conspiracy.

Rana, 48, a native of Pakistan and a Canadian citizen, was arrested Oct. 18 at his West Rogers Park home. He was charged with providing material support to a foreign terrorism conspiracy that involved Headley.

Leader Of Islamic Group Killed In Raid

DETROIT — The Detroit leader of a nationwide fundamentalist Islamic group was fatally shot during a series of FBI raids Wednesday afternoon.

 The FBI arrested 10 people who have ties to the group called the Ummah, which translates to “the brotherhood.”

 The group’s primary mission is to establish a separate sovereign Islamic state governed by Sunni law, according to FBI charging documents. Luqman Ameen Abdullah, 53, called his followers to an offensive jihad, rather than a defensive jihad.

 During the raid, Abdullah, aka Christopher Thomas, fired his weapon, said the FBI in a release. An FBI police dog was shot during the gunfire.

 The dog was transported via helicopter to an animal hospital in Madison Heights, but despite the rescue efforts, the dog died.

The rest of the suspects were arrested at the Detroit raid on Tireman and Firwood roads and the Dearborn raid on Michigan Avenue and Miller Road without incident.

Seven of the suspects appeared Wednesday afternoon in a detention hearing. The rest will appear before a judge Thursday.

 Before the raid, Abdullah and the 10 others were charged in a complaint with conspiracy to commit several federal crimes, including illegal possession and sale of firearms, arson, body armor and theft from interstate shipments.
 
Named in the complaint are Mohammad Abdul Bassir, Muhammad Abdul Salaam, Abdul Saboor, Mujahid Carswell, Abdullah Beard, Mohammad Philistine, Yassir Ali Khan, Adam Hussain Ibraheem, Garry Laverne Porter and Ali Abdul Raqib.

The group consists primarily of those who converted to Islam while serving sentences in various prisons around the county.

The nationwide leader is believed to be Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rapp Brown. He is currently serving a life sentence in prison for the murder of two police officers in Georgia.

Abdullah Al-Amin preaches violence against law enforcement officials and has trained members of the Ummah inside of a mosque located on Joy Road how to use firearms, martial arts, sword fighting and other types of self-defense in anticipation of government violence, according to the FBI.

Undercover agents in the organization have told the FBI that Luqman Abdullah used to discipline its members starting at an early age by beating them with sticks on their hands, knees and legs and once he beat a little boy so badly that the child was unable to walk for several days.

 In October of 2008, a source the FBI called “credible” recorded statements by Abdullah at a mosque during prayer where he said that Muslims need to cut ties with Christians, Jews, and Kuffars, which the FBI said means all non-Muslims.

 “Obama is a Kafir. McCain is a Kafir, all the rest of them Kuffars, are Kuffars…. The worst Muslim is better than the best Kafir,” said FBI documents.

 At this time, the FBI continues to seek Mujahid Carswell, Mohammad Alsahi and Yassir Ali Khan. Seven of the suspects appeared Wednesday afternoon in a detention hearing. The rest will appear before a judge Thursday.

 Before the raid, Abdullah and the 10 others were charged in a complaint with conspiracy to commit several federal crimes, including illegal possession and sale of firearms, arson, body armor and theft from interstate shipments.

 Named in the complaint are Mohammad Abdul Bassir, Muhammad Abdul Salaam, Abdul Saboor, Mujahid Carswell, Abdullah Beard, Mohammad Philistine, Yassir Ali Khan, Adam Hussain Ibraheem, Garry Laverne Porter and Ali Abdul Raqib.

 The group consists primarily of those who converted to Islam while serving sentences in various prisons around the county.

 The nationwide leader is believed to be Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rapp Brown. He is currently serving a life sentence in prison for the murder of two police officers in Georgia.

 Abdullah Al-Amin preaches violence against law enforcement officials and has trained members of the Ummah inside of a mosque located on Joy Road how to use firearms, martial arts, sword fighting and other types of self-defense in anticipation of government violence, according to the FBI.

Undercover agents in the organization have told the FBI that Luqman Abdullah used to discipline its members starting at an early age by beating them with sticks on their hands, knees and legs and once he beat a little boy so badly that the child was unable to walk for several days.

In October of 2008, a source the FBI called “credible” recorded statements by Abdullah at a mosque during prayer where he said that Muslims need to cut ties with Christians, Jews, and Kuffars, which the FBI said means all non-Muslims.

“Obama is a Kafir. McCain is a Kafir, all the rest of them Kuffars, are Kuffars…. The worst Muslim is better than the best Kafir,” said FBI documents.

At this time, the FBI continues to seek Mujahid Carswell, Mohammad Alsahi and Yassir Ali Khan.

Canadian arrested in Danish newspaper plot

TORONTO — The FBI has arrested a Canadian for his role in an alleged terrorist plot against the Danish newspaper that published the controversial Muhamad cartoons.

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, 48, owner of First World Immigration Services, was charged with aiding a conspiracy to attack the Jyllands-Posten in Copenhagen.

In an indictment unsealed this morning, the U.S. Justice Department said Mr. Rana had worked with David Coleman Headley and three Pakistani terrorists to organize the attack.

Mr. Rana, a Canadian citizen born in Pakistan, has been living in Chicago, where he operates an immigration firm and grocery store. He also owns a halal meat business in Kinsman, Ill., that was raided by FBI agents last week.

“The criminal complaints unsealed today have exposed a serious plot against overseas targets by two Chicago-based men working with Pakistani-based terrorist organizations,” said David Kris, Assistant Attorney General for National Security.

Muslim extremists rioted around the world after the newspaper published a dozen editorial cartoons of Muhamad in 2005 that some considered blasphemous.

The BNP are socialists, so it’s only to be expected that their political history would include Holocaust denial and racist politics, that part of the socialist baggage, Fascism and racist politics, go hand in hand with Marxist socialism. Adolf Hitler was borrowing heavily from Marx and other intellectuals who helped to shape communist poltical theory.

So after the BNP burst onto the front and center stage, claiming to be the only party serious about immigration, there now arises another, the UKIP, which will in short time, make hash of the BNP and become the party to set the tone on how the debate over immigration and Islamization will be framed. UKIP: Daily Express Hits Nail on Head

Columnist Patrick O’Flynn of the Daily Express, has penned a considered analysis of the furore surrounding the BNP, discounting the party as serious political player and nominating UKIP as the main anti-immigration force.

Under the headline ‘UKIP and not the BNP will become the main anti-mmigration party’ he wrote on Sautrday:
As the dust settle over the BBC stiudios in West London, ther are two key things to be taken from Question Time.

First, there is a massive gap in the market for a non-racist party that is against further mass immigration and ready to resist Islamo-facism. Second, Nick Griffin’s BNP is not it.

Griffin’s monstrous ideological baggage – his fraternising with the Ku Klux Klan, his Holocaust denial, his other odious past uttterances – was exposed in front of a huge TV audience. He proved unable to discard any of it and thus the appeal of him and his party will remain extremely limited in a country whose finest hour came with the defeat of Nazi Germany. but when the discussion moved on to Labour’s lax and deceitful immigration policy, it was clear the political elite was in trouble.

Jack straw waffled to no avail while Lib-Dem Chris Huhne postured as a migration sceptic rather than state his party’s real belief in open borders. For the tories Baroness Warsi did better, acknowledging that Labour’s lying about the scale of the influx and refusal to limit it was having a drastic effect on people’s lives and proposing a cap on numbers.

But the Tories will not say what the cap should be or how it would be enforced given taht Britain has singed international agreements that limit its control over its borders and that would not be torn up by David Cameron. Anyone from the EU can come and liver here, anyone can claim asylum and remina for years while their case is considered. And the Conservatives, remember, are pressing for 72 million Muslim Turks to be admitted into the EU and thus gain an incontrovertible right to settle in Britain.
So who can fill the gap? The obvious candidate is UKIP. In the past it has been seen as a single issue, anti-European pressure group. But its likely new leader Lord Pearson is keen to broaden its agenda to highlight public concern over immigration and Islamism.

In the past its members have been smeared as “fruitcakes and closet racists”. But it has never been a racist party and has always had a substantial ethnic minority membership. All the “mainstream” parties have stated that the BNP is uniquely abhorrent because of the racial bias of its outlook. If any try to smear UKIP in future it will rebound on them.

RABAT, Morocco — Death threats, police interrogations and a media firestorm aren’t typical upshots of a decision to enjoy an afternoon picnic.

But that’s just what happened after a circle of Moroccan activists tried meeting for an outdoor lunch during Ramadan last month.

The activists planned the meal to protest a national law that punishes those who break the Islamic holy month’s mandatory daytime fast. Their stated aim was to spur debate on religious freedom.

OTTAWA — The migrant smuggling ship intercepted off the West Coast carrying 76 Sri Lankan men is owned by the outlawed Tamil Tigers and previously smuggled weapons from North Korea to Sri Lanka, says an international expert on South Asia terrorism.

It’s feared the ship may be the first wave of defeated Tamil Tiger fighters fleeing for safe haven after the end of Sri Lanka’s 25-year civil war, says another security expert.

Canada hosts the largest population of Sri Lankan Tamils outside of Sri Lanka, and has long been a key support base for the Tigers, which is on Canada’s official list of terrorist organizations.

A Saudi female journalist said Saturday that a court has ordered her to receive 60 lashes for working at a television network that aired the sexual confessions of a man.

Rozana al-Yami said a judge in the Red Sea coastal town of Jeddah dropped all charges that she had been directly involved with the episode of a program on LBC, a Saudi-owned Lebanese network, in July.

However, Yami said the judge sentenced her to 60 lashes for having been a part-time employee for LBC’s Saudi operations. The judge mentioned LBC had lacked the appropriate operating licence, she said.

“It’s a punishment for all journalists through me,” Yami told AFP by telephone.

“They just said the channel was illegal. But the Saudi minister of information himself appeared on LBC a couple of weeks ago,” she said.

Saudi judges base their rulings on strict Islamic sharia law, but it was not immediately clear how the judge in this case reached the verdict.

Yami, 22, until recently a reporter for the Arabic women’s magazine Roaa, said she did not know when her sentence would be carried out. She does not plan an appeal, saying she feared she could end up with a harsher sentence.

Her sentencing comes after Saudi airline sales clerk Mazen Abdul Jawad was convicted of offensive behaviour and sentenced to five years in jail and 1,000 lashes on Oct. 7 for his appearance on the LBC show Bold Red Line, in which he talked about picking up girls and having sex with them.

Abdul Jawad’s lawyer Sulaiman al-Jimaie expressed shock at Yami’s sentence because she had nothing to do with him or the episode of the program he appeared in.

Jimaie said the court produced evidence that Yami had helped solicit people to appear on other episodes of Bold Red Line.

“It’s an incredible decision,” he said, comparing it to the recent trials in Sudan of female journalists for wearing “indecent” trousers.
