“In the past two weeks we’ve witnessed a coup d’état”

Peter Hitchens chillingly reflects in the London Daily Mail today (How long before the grey dictators march on London?) on how the European Union is entering a frighteningly authoritarian endgame:

Civilian juntas have seized power in Rome and Athens. Soon, similar gangs of grey men may be sweeping aside national governments in Madrid and Lisbon. Nobody much [in the media] is protesting. In time – don’t rule it out – it could be our turn here [in Britain]…

Our ruling Left-wing elite seem oddly untroubled by the ruthless snuffing-out of national sovereignty across southern Europe. If the same thing had been done by a bunch of colonels, they would have been piously outraged…

But of course these putsches are the work of the European Union, a project the Left have long supported. And the EU is more subtle than any colonels. There is no need for midnight arrests or tanks on the streets. The enormous invisible power of the EU’s law and institutions gets its way without any need for such things.

The sheer dictatorial nerve of Italy’s new viceroy, Mario Monti, is impressive. He has formed a government without a single elected politician in it…

Once again, please pay close attention. This is the best warning you will ever get of what the EU is really about. It is an empire, in which the great nations of Europe, including ours, are intended to disappear for ever.

What’s taking place in Europe should stagger and frighten us all, but it doesn’t seem to affect the populous, and it’s true horror is not even momentarily permeating the mainstream media. Maybe because it’s all happening so smoothly, so effortlessly? It’s almost as if the European system had been gently and deliberately designed for decades, with the aim of facilitating precisely such a total removal of democracy, and its substitution with a Euro-statist technocracy.

Italy approves draft law banning burqas in public

 ROME—An Italian parliamentary commission has approved a draft law banning women from wearing veils that cover their faces in public.

The draft passed by the constitutional affairs commission Tuesday would prohibit women from wearing a burka, niqab or any other garb that covers the face in public.

The news agency ANSA said third parties who force women to cover their faces in public would be fined about $41,000 and face up to 12 months in jail.

The law was sponsored by Souad Sbai, a Moroccan-born member of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s conservative Freedom People party. ANSA said the opposition voted against the law.

The draft will be forwarded to parliament after the summer recess.

Italy: Muslim destroys the statue of the patron saint of Agrigento in Sicily

I believe that Mohamed, once the SOB actually took the city of Mecca, made it his mission to destroy all the ‘idols’ in the Kaaba, itself now a Muslim idol where bizarre and pointless rituals are conducted to cement ones Muslim faith. I suppose this fellow thought he was doing Mohamed’s work, which of course he was. The stone Buddhas in Afghanistan being another modern example of wonton destruction of anything not Islamic.

An immigrant from the Maghreb has entered the sanctuary of Saint Calogero and has destroyed the image of the patron saint, last July 9th.

The church was open for the 7:30 mass, when the immigrant, of North African origins, has entered and gone directly into the sacristy, where the statue of Saint Calogero was. He took it and threw it violently against the wall, destroying it completely.

A believer who was at the church had tried to arrest the immigrant, but was hurt. Four policemen were needed to control the man and then to arrest him.

Saint Calomero, a Greek saint, lived in the city in the Vth century, evangelised Sicily and is much revered in the island. He is always represented as a black man. In fact, the Agrigento’s archbishop has praised him as “an example of integration between people”.

Italy condemns attack on its Tripoli embassy

May 1 (Reuters) – Italy on Sunday condemned an attack on its embassy in Tripoli as a “grave and vile” act and said Muammar Gaddafi’s government had failed to carry out its most elementary international obligations.

The Foreign Ministry issued a statement after the Italian embassy in the Libyan capital was vandalised. A spokesman said there were no further details but a witness said smoke was rising from the building.

Italy now has demonstrations of Islamic primacy.

France blocks Italian trains carrying migrants

BBC NEWS… Authorities in France have blocked trains from Italy in an attempt to stop north African migrants from entering the country.

Trains carrying migrants and political activists have been stopped at the border – prompting Italy to launch an official complaint with its neighbour.

Italy has angered France by giving out temporary resident permits to thousands of Tunisian migrants.

The permits allow them to travel freely in many European countries.

The Italian foreign ministry said the French move was “illegitimate and in clear violation of general European principles”.

Schengen infringement?

Maurizio Furia, a spokesman for the Italian rail company, said that trains were not being allowed to pass into Menton, France, from the Italian border station of Ventimiglia.

France says migrants have to prove they can support themselves financially and has set up patrols on the Italian border.

But Italy says that France’s actions are in violation of the EU’s Schengen passport-free travel zone.

“We have given the migrants travel documents, and we gave everything (else) that is needed, and the European Commission recognised that, it has said that Italy is following the Schengen rules,” Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said in an interview on Italy’s Sky TG24 TV.

Italy and other European countries have been increasingly concerned about migration from north Africa following the political turmoil in the region.

Earlier this month, Italy and France agreed to launch sea and air patrols to try to prevent the influx of thousands of people from Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

Muslim population in Western Europe rising

IB NEWS… The population of Muslims in Western Europe has been steadily rising in recent decades, largely due to immigration from the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa.

In Southeastern Europe, much of which once formed part of the Ottoman Empire, Muslims have been present for many centuries, but they are a relatively new phenomenon in the western part of the continent.

On the whole, Muslim’s represent about 5 percent of the population of the EU 27.

Far-right politicians in Europe have long warned that the Muslim numbers will continue to grow due to higher birth rates. Marine Le Pen, the head of France’s anti-immigrant National Front party, who openly discusses the rising number Muslims in France, could conceivably win next year’s presidential election, according to polls.

While the percentage of Muslims as part of the overall population of western European nations are in single digits, a 2009 study by the Telegraph newspaper in the UK estimated that by 2050, Muslims will account for 20 percent of the European Union’s populace. Reports: fire breaks out in immigrant centre on Italian island

LAMPEDUSA, Italy – Italian news reports say a fire has broken out in an immigrant shelter in Lampedusa, the tiny island close to North Africa where thousands of migrants have arrived in the past weeks. The ANSA news agency said a column of smoke was rising from two buildings in the centre. SKY Italia said that Tunisians protesting repatriations set the building ablaze.

About 50 migrants managed to escape from the centre, while others were stopped by police patrolling the area, according to ANSA. Some 26,000 illegal migrants have landed on Lampedusa since the beginning of the year, amid unrest across North Africa. Italy started repatriating Tunisians last week after striking a deal with Tunis.
