Al Queda threatens Philipine Capital

February 22, 2010 STRATFOR:
An army spokesman said Philippine security forces went on high alert in the capital, bracing for potential bomb attacks from an al Qaeda-linked Islamist militant group to avenge the death of a senior rebel leader, Reuters reported Feb. 22. Lieutenant Colonel Romeo Brawner stated that the army and police were monitoring the movements of militants in Manila, closely coordinating with police in the national capital region to thwart any potential Abu Sayyaf attacks. He added that there is a small militant cell operating in Manila.

The wannabe British jihadist who said no to Al-Qaeda

This is now what the Brits are calling a success story.

Short version. The murder of innocents during 9/11 and 7-7 inspire a British Muslim to travel to Pakistan and join in the killing. Young Muslim gets wounded and realizes this is no game and I don’t want to play anymore. British media reports it as proof that jihadists can be de-radicalized.

TIMESONLINE… It took months to get to the man I must call “Kasim”. I’d heard about a wannabe British jihadist who had been injured in a US drone attack in Waziristan, Pakistan, but he was not easy to find, and, once found, he was clearly uneasy. With good reason. There are probably many people far scarier than me who would like to meet him.

We met in Blackpool on a filthy day, in the pouring rain, when the sky was as dark as the sea. I guessed he was in his mid-twenties. He wore a baseball cap pulled well down over his eyes as we walked between the great iron gantries of the pier and talked.

Like many young Muslims who embrace extreme Islam, Kasim — who was born in Britain — didn’t come from a deprived area or a poor family. His parents were middle-class Pakistanis. Kasim rebelled, dated girls, went clubbing, drank alcohol and smoked cannabis — but never told his parents. Had they known, they would probably have placed him under curfew.

Nonetheless, he was essentially a typical British teenager — until 9/11 changed everything. “It was the catalyst. It gave me the hunger to learn more about Islam,” he says. His journey to jihad began with sampling different mosques in search of the “peacefulness” he believed would guarantee his path to paradise. “I realised that there were 73 different sects in Islam — only one was going to paradise and the rest were going to hellfire.” Continue Reading →

Quebec man gets life sentence for Al Qaeda linked bomb plot

Said Namouh

Said Namouh

TORONTOSTAR… MONTREAL-A rural Quebec man was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for his role in an overseas terrorist bomb plot by an Al Qaeda affiliated group.

It is just the second time in Canadian legal history that a life sentence has been handed down in a terrorism case, after the one last month to one of the so-called ‘Toronto 18′, Crown prosecutors said.

Said Namouh was found guilty last October of four terrorism-related charges relating to a loosely planned plot to bomb targets in Germany and Austria.

The terror attack was motivated by those countries’ military presence in Afghanistan.

Namouh was involved with the Global Islamic Media Front, an organization recognized by the court as a terrorist group that took part in propaganda and jihad recruitment.

The organization is described as an Al Qaeda media tool.

Namouh, 37, will have no chance of parole for at least 10 years.

Quebec court Judge Claude Leblond said Namouh remains dangerous and remorseless whereas in other Canadian terrorism cases, some of the accused had seen the error of their ways. Taqyyia

Leblond noted that an attempt by Namouh to seek the court’s favour by taking the stand during his sentencing hearing last November had the opposite effect.

“In no way since the events has he distanced himself from terrorism,” Leblond said in his judgment. Continue Reading →

Biden: Al Queda changing tactics

February 11, 2010
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said al Qaeda was moving toward smaller but “devastatingly frightening” attacks, adding that the chance of another 9/11-style mass assault is unlikely, Reuters reported Feb. 11. Biden also said the situation in Pakistan worried him more than that of Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan, stating that it is a big country with nuclear weapons and a significant minority of radicalized population. He added that Pakistan does not have a completely functional democracy, making it his greatest concern. Biden said the concern relates to someone just strapping a backpack on them with weapons and blowing up.?

Clare Lopez: Time is up to stop Iran

Nuclear Threat

Time is Up to Stop Iran’s Nuclear Bomb
by Clare M. Lopez
It’s not that unusual to hear hostile remarks directed at the United States from the Iranian regime — but lately, it’s been getting not only personal but frankly contemptuous. Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki recently let it be known that “we do not take [U.S. Secretary of State] Mrs. Clinton seriously.” Hostility is normal between mortal enemies. Contempt means they think we’re so weak, we don’t even rate the effort hostility would take.

At this point, even moves intended to show resolve fall flat with Tehran. Despite a U.S. naval build-up in the Persian Gulf that includes stationing two ships armed with anti-missile missiles and providing additional defensive missiles to Sunni regimes in the area, the Iranians remain unimpressed. Just as they were earlier when the Obama administration offered an “outstretched hand” if Iran would “unclench its fist.” Or when president Obama wrote ridiculous letters of supplication and congratulation to Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei and president Ahmadinejad.

The White House decision not to speak out in support of the Iranian demonstrators who took to the streets to protest rigged presidential elections in June 2009 didn’t seem to win any points with the mullahs either. Instead, the Iranian parliament voted to approve $20 million for exposing human rights abuses in the U.S. Is this country even capable anymore of realizing when it’s being seriously dissed?

Apparently not, because events in the Middle East are closing inexorably on an Iranian demonstration of nuclear weapons status. Years of dithering negotiations have proven utterly ineffective in halting Tehran’s deliberate, determined progress towards acquiring the bomb. The ayatollahs have missed deadline after deadline set by the international community while brazenly forging ahead with nuclear enrichment and a succession of missile delivery system tests. That not one single meaningful consequence has ever followed years of Iranian non-compliance with obligations of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty they willingly signed must be the cause of much chuckling in Tehran’s tea rooms and war rooms. As long as China and Russia can be counted on at the United Nations Security Council to block serious sanctions or any other enforcement action with teeth, Tehran’s brutal dictators have no reason to expect they’ll be called to account. Certainly not by the Obama administration.

The scorn that drips from every comment to or about the U.S. by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his regime’s thugs has been earned. U.S. refusal to acknowledge the state of war declared against us by the Ayatollah Khomeini over 30 years ago, refusal to stand up to the rampant export of Islamic jihadist terrorism across the globe, refusal to impose regime-threatening consequences for failure to end the nuclear weapons program, refusal to stand with brave Iranians who dare to stand for their own liberty, and above all, refusal to confront Tehran’s 2-decade-long alliance with al-Qaeda, have thoroughly convinced the mullahs that they can get away with literally anything.

Even though Tehran has tried to hide its nuclear weapons program under bunkers, mountains, and population centers, given the revelations about it over the years from the Israelis, the Mujahedeen-e Khalq (MEK), and every other Western intelligence service but ours, and despite the thoroughly discredited 2007 U.S. National Intelligence Estimate which said Iran ended its nuclear program in 2003, there’s not much doubt anymore (even at the International Atomic Energy Agency—IAEA) that Iran is moving methodically towards acknowledged status as a nuclear weapons power.

The Iranian-North Korean joint venture on missile development has been coming along nicely with steady advances in technology (such as the use of solid rocket propellant fuel) and range capability (southern Europe by now). Iranian centrifuges spinning at the Natanz show site seem to multiply by the week (what goes on at the covert enrichment sites is anybody’s guess). An obvious nuclear triggering device test program and blueprints for fashioning the hemispherical pits of a nuclear weapon elicit little more than yawns from the U.S. intelligence community, even after both the MEK and IAEA revealed the details.

All that’s really left at this point is the buzzer — or more specifically, an Islamic Revolutionary Guard commander’s finger on the button.

Change is coming to Iran, whether from a new generation of Greens determined to be free, or the gathering internal implosion of a revolution that’s run its course. But the time clock on Iran’s nuclear weapons program is ticking faster than either one of those now. Absent action from the outside, from the U.S., Israel, and/or the international community, Iran will be a nuclear weapons power in the very near future. Whether it chooses to demonstrate that status with a test launch, like India and Pakistan, an out-of-the-blue genocidal bolt against Israel, or a life-altering electro-magnetic pulse attack over the U.S., will soon be out of any of our hands unless somebody stops the mullahs soon and forcibly.

The courageous Dutch politician, Geert Wilders (currently on trial in Amsterdam for daring to speak the truth about Islamic jihad), has called America “The Last Man Standing.” The question is: are we? Are we really?

Amnesty International turmoil: chief sacked over attacking group’s support of Taliban

Amnesty chief suspended after attacking group’s links to ‘Britain’s most famous Taliban supporter’

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 5:51 PM on 09th February 2010

A senior Amnesty International official has been suspended after attacking the human rights charity for allying itself with ‘Britain’s most famous supporter of the Taliban’.

Gita Sahgal, head of the organisation’s gender unit, branded Amnesty’s links to former Guantanamo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg a ‘gross error of judgment’.

She was removed from her post within a few hours of her criticism emerging, and now a bitter war of words is raging between the activist and her employer.

Both have angrily defended their position over Mr Begg, 42, a Briton held at Guantanamo for three years until 2005 because of suspected links to al-Qaeda. Continue Reading →

London’s Islamic Radicals Speak Out

Great Britain recently raised its terror alert to “severe” following reports that al Qaeda was plotting new attacks.

But Britain may be facing an even greater threat from within — one the British government helped to create.

CBN News recently traveled to London to interview a number of leading Islamic radicals who have settled there with the full knowledge of the British government. Continue Reading →

Stratfor SITREP: Yemen: Wage Jihad On Christians, Muslims – Al Qaeda Group

February 8, 2010 STRATFOR
The Yemen-based wing of al Qaeda said Muslims in the Arabian Peninsula had no choice but to wage jihad on Christians and Jews, reported Reuters on Feb. 8, citing an audio tape of the group’s deputy leader, Saeed al-Shehri, a former inmate at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay. The audio tape was posted on a website frequently used by Islamist groups.

Muslim women ‘radicalised’ in UK

And apparently this happens at Universities. This calls for a repost of Prof. Martins rather clear condemnation of them at the end of this BBC article on the radicalization of women in the U.K. h/t snaphanen

On Monday a female suicide bomber killed 54 people in north-east Baghdad.

We don’t advocate that British Muslims go over and fight
Dr Nazreen Nawaz, Hizb ut-Tahrir

The attack may have happened on another continent, but there are increasing concerns that violent extremism among women may now also be increasing in the UK.

It is believed that the process of radicalisation often takes place at universities.

One Islamist group linked with this practice is Hizb ut-Tahrir.

While not itself connected to any terrorist acts, Hizb ut-Tahrir has courted controversy and politicians have seized on some of its more inflammatory views.

The Conservative Party has said it would ban the organisation altogether.

Nazreen Nawaz is a spokeswoman for the group. She became a member while studying medicine at King’s College London.

Today, sitting at her dining table in south London, she teaches her four-year-old daughter how to spell and explains her decision to join.

“The philosophy of Hizb ut-Tahrir offered me a view of Islam that could solve many of the problems in the Muslim world,” Dr Nawaz says. Continue Reading →

North Africa Qaeda offers to help Nigerian Muslims

(Interested parties may want to search Vlad for related articles from the past few weeks.)

From Reuters:
DUBAI, Feb 1 (Reuters) – An al Qaeda group in North Africa has offered to give Nigerian Muslims training and weapons to fight Christians in the West African country, where more than 460 people were killed in sectarian clashes last month.

Vice President Goodluck Jonathan sent in the military to halt the violence after four days of clashes between Christian and Muslim mobs armed with guns, knives and machetes in the area round the city of Jos in central Nigeria. “We are ready to train your people in weapons, and give you whatever support we can in men, arms and munitions to enable you to defend our people in Nigeria,” the statement by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) said. Body bombs and surgical implants.

Here is one Michael Jackson didn’t have.

I added the short Enterprise clip. If any of you have access to it, watch the entire episode of The Chosen Realm from the Star Trek Enterprise series. One has to wonder, if they saw this, why can’t Obama and the people who invent and foist useless crap at us at airports? I wanted to add the clip right after this one where one of the ‘religious aliens’ blows himself up destroying a part of the ship right after this clip using a special detonator that makes the explosives in his blood go-boom but I can’t find that clip anywhere.

Terrorists ‘plan attack on Britain with bombs INSIDE their bodies’ to foil new airport scanners

Britain is facing a new Al Qaeda terror threat from suicide ‘body bombers’ with explosives surgically inserted inside them.

Until now, terrorists have attacked airlines, Underground trains and buses by secreting bombs in bags, shoes or underwear to avoid detection.

But an operation by MI5 has uncovered evidence that Al Qaeda is planning a new stage in its terror campaign by inserting ‘surgical bombs’ inside people for the first time.

Security services believe the move has been prompted by the recent introduction at airports of body scanners, which are designed to catch terrorists before they board flights. Continue Reading →

Some articles about the trial in NYC

It would appear that Obama has bowed to reality again and decided against having the trial of KSM in New York. I have to admire that. With a few more policy adjustments in the face of what is actually rational, Obama may look a lot like George W. at the end of the day. Meanwhile, here are a couple of rather interesting articles on why having this trial in New York is a bad idea, and what sort of people the detainees at Guantanamo really are.

First, from Michelle Malkin on the trial currently underway of an Al Queda suspect who is a microbiologist and was likely planning an attack on the US of a rather high magnitude, with the intention of doing as much harm and causing as much death as her skills as a graduate biologist could create.

Second, the personal story from the New York Post of a security guard at Guantanamo and how he was attacked and who resides there.

Women of terror: female suicide bombers trained to attack West

Now this is Islamist equality. Will they get their 72 young virgin boy-toys in paradise?

From The Telegraph U.K.

Al-Qaeda terror cells have trained a group of female suicide bombers to attack Western targets, US officials have warned.

The women, who may have a “non Arab” appearance and be travelling on Western passports, have been prepared for their missions by the Yemeni group responsible for the operation to blow up an airliner over the United States on Christmas Day.

Details of the bombers emerged just hours after British spy chiefs raised the UK threat state to “severe” amid fears that al-Qaeda was planning a wave of attacks against western targets.

Terror experts within the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, a unit of MI5, now believe that an attack against the UK is “highly likely”.

US law enforcement agents have been told to be on the lookout for female suicide bombers who may attempt to enter the country.

At least two are believed to be connected to al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula which dispatched underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab who tried unsuccessfully to bring down a transatlantic airliner over Detroit.

Richard Clarke, a former chief White House counter terrorism adviser, said: “They have trained women.

“There are others who are still out there who have been trained and who are clean skins – that means people who we do not have a record of, people who may not look like al-Qaeda terrorists, who may not be Arabs, and may not be men.”

Security sources said that it was “inevitable” that al-Qaeda would eventually turn to using women with a western appearance to carry out suicide attacks.

Officials said that airliners and all forms of transport could be targeted as well as sports stadiums, ports and power stations.

Although female suicide bombers have been used to carry out attacks by al-Qaeda in Iraq and Palestinian groups in Israel, none are thought to have been used against European or US targets before.

It has also emerged that two male Arab nationals were refused permission to board planes from Heathrow Airport to the United States earlier this month after their names appeared on a US “no fly list”.

The first incident happened last Saturday when British officials refused to allow an Egyptian man permission to fly on American Airlines flight 113 from Heathrow to Miami.

The following day a Saudi Arabian passenger was stopped from boarding United Airlines flight 929 to Chicago. Officials said the man was sent back to Saudi Arabia by British immigration officials.

Both men were denied permission to board the US-bound flights after their names were “flagged” as being linked to potential Islamist terror groups.

Washington officials said the men were part of a surge of people named on its “no fly” list who have attempted to board flights to or in the US in recent days.

In two other cases involving people on the no-fly list, a man in Nairobi, Kenya was kept off a flight last Sunday that would have connected in Amsterdam to Dallas, and a passenger attempting to fly on an American Airlines flight to Los Angeles was stopped in Saint Maarten, in the Caribbean, before he could board a connecting flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

American officials say there were two additional incidents, in Minneapolis and in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in which people on the no-fly list were denied boarding, questioned and then allowed to leave the airport without being detained.

Mr Clarke, who was talking to ABC news in the United states, added: “What we don’t know is whether this is because everyone is doing a better job of enforcing the no-fly list, or because the list has been expanded, or because the terrorists are attempting to probe our security.”

A US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations report has also revealed that around 70 American citizens, some ex-convicts, have disappeared into Yemen and Somalia and pose a Jihadist threat to the US.

The latest revelations follow the decision by the Joint Terrorism Analysis centre (JTAC), which is based at MI5’s headquarters in London, to raise the UK threat state from substantial to severe – a move which indicates that a UK-based attack is now “highly likely”.

The threat is believed to come from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsular. Whitehall sources said that the group had demonstrated that it had both the “intent and capability” to mount an attack against a western target.

The decision to raise the threat level was made following briefings to the Prime Minister by the heads of the security services MI5, MI6 and Government Communication Headquarters (GCHQ), the covert listening agency, and a meeting of the Government’s Cobra emergency committee.

It is understood that the threat state was raised because of the increases in “terrorist chatter” picked up by GCHQ in the last month – a development corroborated by officials on Capitol Hill.

World Foreign ministers are preparing to meet in London this week for two conferences to discuss the threat of terrorism in both Yemen and Afghanistan.

But Whitehall sources were insistent that there was no specific intelligence which suggested that either conference was a potential target.

Announcing the raise in threat level, Alan Johnson said on Friday night that “there is no intelligence to suggest than an attack is imminent”.

He added: “We still face a real and serious threat to the UK from international terrorism so I would urge the public to remain vigilant and carry on reporting suspicious events to the appropriate authorities and to support the police and security services in their continuing efforts to discover, track and disrupt terrorist activity.”

But Patrick Mercer, the Tory chairman of the Commons Counter Terrorism Sub Committee, described the governments warnings as “vacuous”.

He said: “Without any information about what to do or how to do it, then informing us of the threat level is meaningless.”

Gordon Brown warned earlier this week that “a number of terrorist cells are actively trying to attack Britain and other countries.”

His speech to the House of Commons came after he received a briefing on the latest intelligence at a meeting of the Cabinet’s National Security Committee.

Mr Brown said the failed attack over Detroit signalled “the first operation mounted outside Arabia by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.”

He also talked about the increased threat from Somalia in east Africa and the Sahel in West Africa, adding that there would be a greater degree of intelligence sharing with foreign countries.

Abdulmutallab, who tried to set off a bomb in his underwear, has warned his FBI interrogators that up to 20 “more like me” may be preparing further attacks.
