French MPs to vote on burkha ban that could imprison men who force wives to wear them

From The Daily Mail

France could ban burkhas by the end of September after a series of parliamentary votes was scheduled to begin.

Deputies, or members of the lower house, are tomorrow likely to approve the measure outlawing face-covering veils despite outrage among the country’s 5million Muslims.

And the could be ratified in September when Senators are almost certain to approve the ban which has received overwhelming support from voters.

There was little resistance among lawmakers today as they debated bill that proposes to fine wearers £140 and imprison men who force their wives to put on the outfit.

But the ban could be shot down by France’s constitutional watchdog or the European Court of Human Rights.

That could dampen efforts under way in other European countries toward banning the veils. Continue Reading →

Al-Qaida-linked Somali group claims Uganda blasts

By MAX DELANY and JASON STRAZIUSO (AP) – 1 hour ago

KAMPALA, Uganda — Somalia’s most dangerous al-Qaida-linked militant group claimed responsibility Monday for twin bombings in Uganda that killed 74 people watching the World Cup final on TV, saying the militants would carry out attacks “against out enemy” wherever they are.

Al-Shabab, whose ranks are swelled by militant veterans of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, has long threatened to attack outside of Somalia’s borders, but the bombings late Sunday are the first time the group has done so.

“We will carry out attacks against our enemy wherever they are,” Rage said. “No one will deter us from performing our Islamic duty.” Continue Reading →

MOSCOW, July 12 (Xinhua) — Iran is getting closer to acquiring the capability to build nuclear weapons, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday.

He urged Russian ambassadors and permanent representatives to move away from simplistic approaches toward Iran’s nuclear problem.

“We need to finally abandon any simplistic approaches toward this problem. Iran is getting closer to possessing the potential that in principle can be used to create nuclear weapons,” Medvedev was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.

He reiterated Russia’s positions that sanctions would not produce the desired results, but Russia will consistently urge Teheran to show essential openness and cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“Famous” bin Laden: teaching children our fear of terrorism is racist

HERALDSUN… What an offensive corruption of our curriculum. Children are to be taught the fabled best of Islam and the imagined worst of Australia to blind us all to the real challenges Islam poses even to a country that’s peacefully integrated the many more Buddhists here:

EVERY Australian school student would be taught positive aspects about Islam and Muslims – and that Australia is a racist country – under a proposal by an education think tank.
The plan is outlined in the Learning From One Another: Bringing Muslim Perspectives into Australian Schools booklet, published during the week by the Australian Curriculum Studies Association and the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Excellence in Islamic Studies.
It says there is a “degree of prejudice and ignorance about Islam and Muslims”, and Australian students must be taught to embrace difference and diversity.
The booklet refers to the al-Qai’da of Osama bin Laden as “a famous name” synonymous with the traditionalist movement in Islam. It makes no reference to terrorism.
It says “most texts used in Australian English classes still have a Western or European perspective”.

How impudent for a largely immigrant community, comprising a very small minority, to demand English classes now be taught more from their perspective rather than the communal perspective of the country to which most chose to come – a communal perspective that reflects the values and institutions that have made this country worth coming to in the first place. It is particularly offensive in that the host nation is demonised as racist while the very real and in some cases lethal challenges posed by the newcomers are glossed over.
This National Centre of Excellence for Islamic Studies document is the well-meaning – but dangerously foolish and deceptive – work of Dr Eeqbal Hassim, a former research fellow in Islamic Law at the University of Melbourne, and Jennet Cole-Adams, director of Curriculum Services at the Australian Curriculum Studies Association.
Most tellingly, it has only passing and vague references to Islamic terrorism, which is the key explanation for Australia’s alleged “racism” towards Muslims – something that might in many case might be more properly described as a natural caution, and one limited to Muslims here than to Buddhists or any other largely immigrant group that seems curiously immune to our “racism”. There is no mention at all of the Islamist killings of some 100 Australian in Bali, or of the Muslim terrorist plots in Australia itself, which have seen 20 people jailed.
Here is the document’s reference to Islamist terror groups, suggesting that Islamist terrorism is created by Western arrogance more than any sickness within Islam itself or Arabic cultures: Continue Reading →

Iran Guards profiting from sanctions: Karroubi |

From Street Journalist

“I believe that part of the Iranian rule as well as the Revolutionary Guards are in favour of sanctions as they make gigantic and astronomical profits from them,” Karroubi was quoted as saying on opposition website Rahesabz.net.

The Guards regularly shrug off international sanctions imposed on Iran for its defiant nuclear programme, with some top commanders expressing willingness to take on projects abandoned by Western companies, including in the energy sector.

Karroubi, who steadfastly opposes the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, again blamed the hardliner for the latest sets of sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council, the European Union and the United States. Continue Reading →

Jews reluctantly abandon Swedish city amid growing anti-Semitism

The Muslim population in Malmo lives in segregated conditions that seem to breed alienation and anger directed at Israeli policies.

By Donald Snyder, The Forward, Haaretz

MALMO, SWEDEN — At some point, the shouts of “Heil Hitler” that often greeted Marcus Eilenberg as he walked to the 107-year-old Moorish-style synagogue in this port city forced the 32-year-old attorney to make a difficult, life-changing decision: Fearing for his family’s safety after repeated anti-Semitic incidents, Eilenberg reluctantly uprooted himself and his wife and two children, and moved to Israel in May.

Sweden, a country long regarded as a model of tolerance, has, ironically, been a refuge for Eilenberg’s family. His paternal grandparents found a home in Malmo in 1945 after surviving the Holocaust. His wife’s parents came to Malmo from Poland in 1968 after the communist government there launched an anti-Semitic purge.

But as in many other cities across Europe, a rapidly growing Muslim population living in segregated conditions that seem to breed alienation has mixed toxically with the anger directed at Israeli policies and actions by those Muslims — and by many non-Muslims — to all but transform the lives of local Jews. Like many of their counterparts in other European cities, the Jews of Malmo report being subjected increasingly to threats, intimidation and actual violence as stand-ins for Israel. German top intelligence official says right-wingers, Muslim extremists share anti-Semitism

By The Associated Press, Google News

BERLIN — A top security official says he sees anti-Semitism in both right-wing and Muslim extremists in Germany.

Heinz Fromm, president of the domestic intelligence agency, is quoted in Der Spiegel Sunday as saying both have “a similar picture of the enemy: Israel and the Jews overall.”

Fromm said that while neo-Nazis adhere to a racist anti-Semitism, Muslim extremists “are oriented toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

He said both groups have the idea “that Israel and the Jews have undue power that needs to be fought.”

Last month a group of Arab youths attacked and shouted anti-Semitic slogans at a Jewish dance group during a street festival in Hannover.

Council forces schools to rearrange exams and cancel lessons to avoid offending Muslims during Ramadan

Mail Online… A council has ordered schools to rearrange tests, cancel swimming lessons and stop sex education to avoid offending Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan.

All primary schools and secondary schools in Stoke-on-Trent have been issued with the guidance aimed at Muslim pupils who may still be fasting when the new term starts in September.

But critics dismissed the dictats as ‘over-zealous’ bureaucracy and said all pupils would be forced to miss out on activities as a result.

During Ramadan, all Muslims who have reached puberty are forbidden from eating food or drinking liquids between sunrise to sunset to encourage discipline and self-restraint.

Some younger children also choose to fast for all or part of the month.

To help them with this, Stoke-on-Trent City council advises schools not to schedule exams or hold parents’ meetings and social events after school.

They are also directed to avoid swimming lessons because some parents and pupils consider the risk of swallowing water too great.

The papers even advise schools to cancel sex and relationship education because Muslims are expected to avoid sexual thoughts and relations while fasting.

Although the guidance was specifically drawn up to help Muslims, it will affect every pupil in the roughly 90 schools in the area.

According to the last official figures in 2001, just 3.2 per cent of the population of Stoke is Muslim. Continue Reading →

Finnish TV does show on Cartoons and Muslims. Interesting half hour.

Here is a 27 minute Finnish TV documentary where the reporter interviews the main imam of Finland about what offends Muslims about drawings and why, and she also takes his explanation to three cartoonists, Kurt Westergaard, who drew the famous bomb-turban Mohamed drawing, and Lars Vilks of Mohamed roundabout dog-Mohamed drawing fame.

She then asks them to do a drawing as an answer to the imam and takes it back to him for his comment. He does what Muslims always do. Demand that Islamic rules be followed by all in the name of tolerance etc.

Iran uses same technique on stoning mothers they do on nuclear weapons

Iran, having enjoyed wild success on delaying action against their nuclear weapons program, seem to be employing the same technique on getting people off their back on the issue of stoning women to death who had a confession beaten out of them by whipping.
