Stolen Picasso painting ‘The Naked Woman’ found in Iraq

A Picasso painting stolen from Kuwait during Saddam Hussein’s 1990 invasion has been discovered in southern Iraq.

Iraqi police arrested a man who was planning to sell “The Naked Woman” during a raid on his house in southern Iraq, officials said on Wednesday.

The painting was apparently among the artwork looted from Kuwait by Iraqi forces, said police spokesman Maj. Muthana Khalid.

It was seized on Tuesday during a raid near the mainly Shia city of Hillah, about 60 miles south of Baghdad.

Mr Khalid said the man was trying to sell the painting for $450,000 (£275,000), but some Iraqi experts who saw the painting said it was worth as much as $10 million.

The painting, which was signed by Pablo Picasso and bore inscriptions from “The Museum of Kuwait”, was being held as evidence while the suspected was interrogated, Mr Khalid said.

Goods and artwork from the neighbouring country’s wealthy homes and its national museum were hauled back to Iraq after the invasion, which led to the 1991 Gulf War.

Daylight kidnapping stumps Toronto police

There is still no sign of University of Toronto student Furqan Muhammad-Haroon, after he was reported abducted in the city’s east end on Saturday afternoon.

The 22-year-old was kidnapped while driving his green Mazda MPV van near Midland Avenue and Ellesmere Road at about 3:30 p.m., police said.

His parents flew to Toronto from Dubai and begged for his safe return at a news conference on Monday.

“Please come forward if you know anything about my boy, my son,” said Haroon Muhammad, who was accompanied by his wife at the news conference. “Please help us. We want him back.”

It is alleged that three men, one with a gun, forced Muhammad-Haroon’s car off the road. Police are treating the case as an abduction.

Muhammad-Haroon, an electrical engineering student, had withdrawn $2,000 and called a friend on his cellphone to say that he thought he was being followed. That was the last time anyone heard from him. Police found the vehicle a short while later.

“At this point, we have nothing further. We still have no idea … where the victim is,” Toronto police spokeswoman Const. Wendy Drummond said.

It’s not the first time a member of the Muslim organization Islamic Foundation of Toronto has gone missing, CBC News has learned. Last November, 22-year-old Abu-Ubaida Atieque, also an engineering student at the University of Toronto, went missing near Neilson Road and Ellesmere Road. His fate remains unknown.

Police haven’t said whether the two cases are linked. But Imam Yusuf Badat said he’s concerned by the disappearances.

“The community is in a state of shock and at the same time saddened at the disappearance of these two youngsters,” he said.

Police will now go through Muhammad-Haroon’s activities in the last day or two and try “to ascertain where he was, who he was with, and then speak with those people,” Drummond said. “The investigation unfolds from there.”

Muhammad-Haroon was on his way to the airport to take a trip overseas.

There was no information about a ransom demand or why Muhammad-Haroon was targeted by the three men.

Here is a video with shockingly little information on the story despite its several minute length:

‘Abducted’ man charged with mischief

Furqan Muhammad-Haroon, 22, of Scarborough, was reported missing over the weekend. His family said he had been abducted.

In what police are now calling a hoax, 22-year-old who claimed to have been kidnapped has been found

From Wednesday’s Globe and Mail Last updated on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009 10:38PM EDT

In a Saturday afternoon phone call with a friend, Furqan Muhammad-Haroon told a harrowing tale.

The 22-year-old Scarborough engineering student, speaking from behind the wheel of his Mazda van, said he was being tailed by three men, one of whom had a gun.

His van was found soon after. Its keys were inside, while Mr. Muhammad-Haroon was not. Also missing was the thousands of dollars in cash he’d withdrawn in preparation for a trip to the United Arab Emirates that evening.

Police began an investigation into what was initially described as an abduction, but the case took puzzling turns early on.

Mr. Muhammad-Haroon had recently been charged with stealing a green plastic recycling bin stuffed with hard drives and other computer equipment from the office of his former employer, IBM Canada.

Teary-eyed family held a press conference on Monday, appealing for information in the abduction of their son, who had no criminal record.

Still, police remained tight-lipped. They had nothing to support the claim of abduction, and were said to be growing doubtful about the incident.

Tuesday evening, Toronto police announced that Mr. Muhammad-Haroon had been found safe in St. Catharines, Ont.

A police source said the devout Muslim was located near a mosque, although Ezeldin Ebadalla, past president of the local Masjid Al-Noor Mosque, said he had not heard of Mr. Muhammad-Haroon.

Police now say the abduction was a hoax, and have charged Mr. Muhammad-Haroon with mischief.

“Ah, that changes things,” Shahzad Siddiqui, a lawyer who had been speaking on behalf of the family, said last night when told of the charge. Mr. Siddiqui was asked earlier in the day whether the theft charge and disappearance were related. “We don’t know if it’s unrelated or not,” he said.

Mr. Muhammad-Haroon is to appear in a Scarborough court Wednesday on his mischief charge, and in Newmarket next month on the theft charge.

His uncharacteristic disappearance had stirred alarm among relatives and friends, who described him as a model student.

“If there is some hoax or some kind of extenuating circumstance, it would be very difficult for the family to accept that,” friend Firaaz Azeez said earlier in the day. Told last night of Mr. Muhammad-Haroon’s discovery, Mr. Azeez was relieved.

“That’s incredible news. … I’m elated and happy he’s safe,” he said. “In terms of how we got here, obviously there’s a lot to be said in the next few days.”

Chechen rebels order separatist leader death-website

25 Aug 2009 07:54:05 GMT

Source: Reuters

MOSCOW, Aug 25 (Reuters) – Chechen rebels called on Tuesday for prominent separatist leader Akhmed Zakayev to be killed, saying he had abandoned Islam by recognising the legitimacy of the restive region’s Kremlin-backed government. Zakayev, who lives in London, represents the moderate wing of the separatist movement and has clashed with radical Islamist insurgents in Russia’s southern republic of Chechnya. Islamist rebel website www.kavkazcenter.com said Zakayav had recognised the authority of Ramzan Kadyrov, the Kremlin-backed leader of the region. “Public remarks show that he (Zakayev) has fallen away from Islam,” the website said, adding that Doku Umarov, Chechnya’s most wanted separatist leader, was behind the order. “The court has ruled that the killing of this apostate is a duty for Muslims.” It did not say what court had issued the ruling. Zakayev, 50, fought Russia as a senior rebel commander in two wars with Moscow in 1994-2000. After Russia regained control of the province, he fled to Europe and acted as an official rebel envoy until 2007. Russia has tried to extradite Zakayev for 13 alleged crimes including kidnapping and murder, but a British court rejected the request in 2003, causing a diplomatic row. Kadyrov said last month that he would welcome Zakayev’s return and possibly offer him a job in the regional culture ministry. But there were no indications Russia was ready to drop charges against him. Kadyrov faces strong criticism from human rights bodies after kidnappings and killings of human rights and charity activists in Chechnya. He denies any link to the killings. Historical fantasies: Elmasry on Islamic slavery

From the National Post.

Historical fantasies

Jonathan Kay, National Post Published: Monday, August 24, 2009

This just in from former Canadian Islamic Congress chief Mohamed Elmasry: Islamic slavery wasn’t all that bad.

Writing in The Canadian Charger — a newly formed internet-based grab bag of anti-Western articles published by hard-left Canadian activists — Elmasry works hard to distinguish the evils of Christian slavery from the purportedly enlightened race-mixing that resulted from its Islamic equivalent.

Some snippets: “Islam, with no church, teaches that all humans, irrespective of their gender, skin col-our and ethnic origin are capable of doing good; there is no original sin. The One God is the Lord of all, not of special people or tribe[s] … Islam and Africa have made something of each other that is quite extraordinary … Islam teaches that slaves, who were then the result of wars, Africans or not, should be treated well and set free as soon as possible … Islam also teaches that slaves can buy their freedom in-kind. Thus many of them excelled to be teachers and even scholars … Islam teaches a slave is a victim of circumstances who should be helped to be free and treated fairly in the mean time. Trading in slaves is a sin. This is in contrast to the teachings of the Bible, ‘Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling.'” … The Arab Muslims called Africans Zanji (hence the island of Zanjibar or Zanzibar), Habashi (from Habasha, Arabic for Ethiopian) or Sudani (Arabic for black). Such

Elmasry’s theme is that Islamic slavery was an enlightened exercise in regional

multiculturalism

names “were not derogatory but simply ethnographic … Some [slaves] achieved high rank and status …” And so on.

The basic theme is that Islamic slavery — to the extent it was bad at all (and it’s not really clear that Elmasry thinks it was) — was an enlightened, almost consensual, win-win exercise in regional multiculturalism. In his characteristically absurd elevation of Islam over Christianity, he makes no mention of the fact that religious Christians led the abolition movement in the West — while slavery persisted wholesale in the Arab world until late in the 20th century, and still survives in parts of Islamic Africa, including Sudan. Indeed, one wonders what the Christian tribes-people from southern Sudan who have been abducted, forcibly converted to Islam and enslaved by Arab Muslims in recent years would make of Elmasry’s historical fantasies.

It’s amazing, isn’t it? Our Christian leaders seem to do nothing but apologize these days — for every historical sin under the sun. But here you have a man who recently led the most prominent Muslim activist group in Canada, and he thinks it’s just dandy that his Arab forebears colonized and enslaved great swathes of Africa over the course of many centuries — a colonial situation that essentially persists in Sudan and regions of the Maghreb.

Remember this the next time Elmasry or one of his fellow travelers denounces Western “imperialism.”

Ireland’s new blasphemy law labeled return to Middle Ages

From Canada’s National Post:

Peter O’Neil, Europe Correspondent, Canwest News Service Published: Sunday, August 23, 2009

Irish cross

h/t Grace @ Vladtepesblog

DUBLIN — The Irish government plans to bring into force a new law in October that critics say is a return to medieval justice.

The legislation, aimed at providing judges with clear direction on the 1937 Constitution’s blasphemy prohibition, imposes a fine of up to 25,000 euros — about $39,000 — for anyone who “publishes or utters matter that is [intentionally meant to be] grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby causing outrage among a substantial number of the adherents of that religion.”

Police with a search warrant will be able to enter private premises and use “reasonable force” to obtain incriminating evidence.

The initiative has stunned some Irish and international commentators who say it contradicts Ireland’s recent emergence as a more multicultural, tech-savvy country that has in recent years showed its independence from the Roman Catholic church by liberalizing its divorce law.

“It is a wretched, backward, uncivilized regression to the Middle Ages,” said prominent atheist author Richard Dawkins in a statement last month, arguing that the law risks shattering Ireland’s new image as a “modern, civilized . . . green and pleasant silicon valley.”

One Canadian publication lightheartedly warned lawyers attending the Canadian Bar Association’s annual conference in Dublin this month to watch their language as they head out to one of the countless pubs in Ireland’s capital.

A blog in the New York Times, meanwhile, featured in its coverage a YouTube link to a famous blasphemy scene from the Monty Python comedy classic Life of Brian.

While some have noted that even countries like Canada still have their own blasphemy laws still on the books, the prohibition in western countries is typically considered obsolete.

Canada’s last prosecution was in 1935, and the statute is now trumped by free speech provisions in the Charter of Rights.

“You’re not introducing new blasphemy laws in the 21st century,” Michael Nugent, chairman of the group Atheist Ireland, told Canwest News Service.

“There are a lot of countries that have blasphemy laws but typically they aren’t enforced. The United Kingdom abolished theirs last year. These are hangovers from earlier times and certainly in most western countries are anachronisms. Introducing a new blasphemy law seems irresponsible to us.”

Nugent said his group intends to come up with a suitably outrageous blasphemy to challenge the law if Ireland’s justice minister, Dermot Ahern, implements the law — passed by parliament in July — in October.

Ahern has angrily dismissed critics, arguing that, as a republican, he would have preferred to have no blasphemy law at all.

He said he was obliged to come up with clear provisions after the Supreme Court, in a blasphemy ruling a decade ago, dismissed the case because the state had provided no clear definition or sanctions.

A spokesman for Ireland’s legal community, meanwhile, said he accepts Ahern’s rationale that the new law was a logical compromise between doing nothing and holding a referendum.

Ken Murphy, speaking for the Law Society of Ireland, said he doesn’t expect a legal crackdown on blasphemers and suggested that the media reaction is overblown.

“It seems to be more an issue for the international media than it is for the people of Ireland,” he told Canwest News Service.

But the critics are questioning why the government didn’t just live with the legal void.

Media reports say there is no indication that the Roman Catholic church, still reeling from a report earlier this year about widespread sexual abuse at homes for children over many decades, has taken a position on the matter or lobbied government.

“No one can think of a single thundering priest, austere vicar, irate rabbi or miffed mullah ever calling for tougher penalties for blasphemy,” wrote Padraig Reidy in the British newspaper The Guardian.

Atheist Ireland’s Nugent also noted that three previous justice ministers never felt the need to respond to the 1999 court decision.

While Ahern has said the likelihood of a blasphemy prosecution is minimal, Nugent said the law as written creates an incentive for groups to show the kind of widespread “outrage” required to justify a prosecution.

Varallo Sesia, Italy says no to burqini, loves bikini

Italian city bans burqini

“We don’t have to be tolerant all the time”. “Imagine a western woman bathing in a bikini in a Muslim country. The consequences could be decapitation, prison or deportation. We are merely prohibiting the use of the burqini”. Mayor Gianluca Buonanno, of Varallo Sesia, Italy.

THE anti-immigration mayor of a northern Italian city has barred Muslim women from wearing the controversial body-concealing swimsuit known as a burqini, it was reported.

Women wearing the garment made up of a veil, a tunic and loose leggings face a fine of 500 euros ($850) if spotted at swimming pools or riversides in the northern Piedmont town of Varallo Sesia, said the ANSA news agency today.

“The sight of a ‘masked woman’ could disturb small children not to mention problems of hygiene,” mayor Gianluca Buonanno was quoted as saying.

“We don’t have to be tolerant all the time,” he said.

Justifying the move, Mr Buonanno said: “Imagine a Western woman bathing in a bikini in a Muslim country. The consequences could be decapitation, prison or deportation. We are merely prohibiting the use of the burqini.”

Last week a swimming pool in Paris refused entry to a burqini-clad Muslim on similar grounds, adding to tensions over Muslim dress in France.

The incident came as French MPs conducted hearings on whether to ban the burqa after President Nicolas Sarkozy said the head-to-toe body covering and veil was “not welcome” in France, home to Europe’s biggest Muslim minority.

Mr Buonanno belongs to Italy’s Northern League, a party allied with the centre-right People of Freedom led by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. It has backed several initiatives hostile to Muslims.

The Belgians still don’t get it

First, a machine translation of the story (with a h/t to jdamn)

Disturbed man attacks beauty salons in Jette

The police Jette has a mentally disturbed 30-year-old man arrested who had attacked some beauty salons on the Charles Woeste. The man was different salons in and went as he recited verses from the Koran. In the last room, he suddenly grabbed a table and chair and hurled it to the manageress.

The police could pick him a little further. He appeared very confused and in his interrogation the man said he was sent by Allah to women who wear makeup and the Quran do not respect them or punish. After consultation with the Brussels public prosecutor, the man was transferred to the psychiatric ward of a nearby hospital. 20/08/09 11u42

So what is it the Belgians don’t get? this man is not mentally ill, he is Muslim and acting as Muslims are commanded to act towards women who show any inclination to act as other than property. Just as ‘Marc Lepine’ did in Montreal when he gunned down all those girls at ecole polytecnique for studying engineering.

(Thanks to a geographically litterate reader, I corrected this from Holland, where the original tip pointed to, back to Belgium where this actually happened.)

Hamas defence against Al Queda termed a ‘massacre.’ Film on French TV at 11:00

From MAANNEWS by way of The Religion of Peace. I bet French TV is lining up to buy the Al Queda version of these events. Or the Hamas version. Either way, the irony is enjoyable. Hamas now knows the sting of it’s own tactics. They are accused of collaborating with the Jews here. Hamas is the organization that hangs people if they sell land to Jews.

Bethlehem – Ma’an – Websites linked to Al-Qaeda criticized Hamas’ operation against the Salafi group Jund Ansar Allah (Soldiers for God) in the Gaza Strip on Friday, accusing the de facto government of “abdicating from Islam,” CNN Arabic reported on Wednesday night.

The unnamed websites, which the report said were closely affiliated with Al-Qaeda, urged the group’s followers to take action against Hamas. They specifically called on Osama Bin Laden and his assistant Ayman Al-Zawahiri.

A statement on the website from unnamed sources, groups expressed condolences for the death of Sheikh Abdul Latif Moussa, the leader of Jund Ansar Allah. Moussa lead hundreds of supporters to a Rafah mosque on Friday and declared the area an “Islamic emirate.” Hamas-allied fe facto government police and members of Hamas’ armed wing said they were forced to react to the group when shots were fired in a civilian area. Clashes broke out culminating in 24 dead including six government officers, six civilians including two young girls, and 12 Jund Ansar Allah gunmen.

The Al-Qaeda groups’ statement called Moussa a “martyr,” saying he was killed by “the bullets and the rockets of Hamas government.” Hamas sources said the ultra-Islamist leader detonated explosives that were strapped to his body.

The statement linked the Hamas action, termed a “massacre” against Jund Ansar Allah, with clashes that took place last summer between Hamas police and members of another radical group, the Army of Islam, in the Ash-Shyjayyiah area of Gaza City.

Hamas was further accused of working against Islamic groups and “Serving the Jews who occupy Palestine, and the Christians who fight against Iraq, Afghanistan Somalia and Chechnya.”

God shoes, Nike swoosh and a musical Quran

These stories are not recent. However they do illustrate that on any given day, in any given month of any given year, one can find the ridiculousness that can be found in obsessive Islam. They remind me of the stories of the woman who found a message from Allah in her rotted mango, the Quranic script found on zucchini leaves by Imams in California and the complaint initiated by a Muslim in Canada over a Dairy Queen soft-serve tip-swirl which resembled some holy something in some Islamic text. You might as well laugh as cry.

Iran: Artist gets five year jail term for musical Koran

Tehran, 13 July (AKI) – An Iranian artist has been sentenced to five years in prison for having put the Koran to music. According to ‘Fardanews’, the Iranian authorities considered the move “offensive to Islamic morality”.

Mohsen Namju is accused of having ridiculed the Koran, “reciting it in a western and anti-Islamic style”.

One of the major experts on recitation of the the Koran in Iran, Abbas Salimi, reported the musician to the Islamic court in Tehran.

The court found the artist guilty for having breached “Islamic morality”.

After the sentence, Abbas Salimi was reportedly “very satisfied” and underlined the importance of “defending the sacredness of god’s book”.

“No-one should be able to ridicule it,” he said.

Under Islamic law, music is allowed if it does not result in provoking the faithful.

Combining the recitation of the Koran and popular songs, like the Iranian artist, is not tolerated under Islamic Sharia law.

UAE: ‘God’ shoes confiscated for breaking Islamic law

Dubai, 23 July (AKI) – A large quantity of women’s shoes have been confiscated from a shop by the inspection and customer protection section of the United Arab Emirate’s department of economic development because they had the word God, or Allah, printed on them.

Dubai-based daily Gulf News, reported the confiscation on Thursday and said the head of the department said that the shop where the seizure took place is one of the Emirate’s biggest fashion showrooms specialising in selling women’s shoes.

The official said they confiscated the shoes and issued a fine against the store after receiving multiple complaints from the public.

The deputy director of the economic development department, Hamad al-Shamsi, said that other legal measures will be taken against the shop for infringement of the Islamic moral code.

Al-Shamsi said that their action follows Article 10 of the so-called Violations and Fines List. The article says that the department will punish and impose fines to all those who sell or display publicly products that can directly violate the decency code or Islamic regulations.

This is not the first instance with the printing of Allah on shoewear.

In 1997, the sportswear company Nike was forced to recall a pair of basketball shoes because of a symbol on the back that accidentally resembled that of the Arabic script for Allah.

Nike later apologised after realising what they had done.

Printing God, or Allah, on shoes is considered morally wrong because in the Muslim faith the sole of the shoe is the most unclean part of an unclean object and shoes are considered ritually unclean.

Muslims attempt to deny any connection between Jerusalem and Jews.

This is such an egregious lie it will likely work. Just FYI, the term ‘Wailing Wall’ was coined by Christians who saw the religious Jews dipping in prayer at the properly named ‘Western Wall’ of the original temple of the old testament and as it appeared to them as if they where crying and lamenting due to the dipping. bowing and praying, they called it the ‘Wailing Wall’ and it stuck. So its funny that these Muslims accuse the Jews of calling it that to somehow make it Jewish.

Dutch university fires Islamic scholar Ramadan

In the spirit of Taqyyia. [Lying to non Muslims for the advancement of Islam.]

The Jerusalem Post… A Dutch university fired Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan on Tuesday for hosting a show on Iran’s state television, which the school said could be seen as endorsing the regime.

Ramadan – known as a reformist who condemns terrorism, seeks to modernize sharia law and urges Muslims living in Europe to integrate – has recently been criticized in the Dutch press for allegedly voicing more conservative views for Muslim audiences than he does in the West.

Both the City of Rotterdam and Erasmus University dismissed Ramadan from his positions as “integration adviser” and professor, saying his program “Islam & Life” airing on Iran’s Press TV is “irreconcilable” with his duties in Rotterdam.

Ramadan “continued to participate in this program even after the elections in Iran, when authorities there hard-handedly stifled the freedom of expression,” Rotterdam and the university said in a joint statement.

British non-Muslim swimmers are told to wear burkinis

More from the “you have got to be fucking kidding me” files.

Telegraph.co.uk

dhimmi BritainBritish swimming pools are imposing Muslim dress codes in a move described as divisive by Labour MPs.

Under the rules, swimmers – including non-Muslims – are barred from entering the pool in normal swimming attire.

Instead they are told that they must comply with the “modest” code of dress required by Islamic custom, with women covered from the neck to the ankles and men, who swim separately, covered from the navel to the knees.

The phenomenon runs counter to developments in France, where last week a woman was evicted from a public pool for wearing a burkini – the headscarf, tunic and trouser outfit which allows Muslim women to preserve their modesty in the water.

The 35-year-old, named only as Carole, is threatening legal action after she was told by pool officials in Emerainville, east of Paris, that she could not wear the outfit on hygiene grounds.

But across the UK municipal pools are holding swimming sessions specifically aimed at Muslims, in some case imposing strict dress codes.

Croydon council in south London runs separate one-and-a half-hour swimming sessions for Muslim men and women every Saturday and Sunday at Thornton Heath Leisure Centre.

Swimmers were told last week on the centre’s website that “during special Muslim sessions male costumes must cover the body from the navel to the knee and females must be covered from the neck to the ankles and wrists”.

There are similar rules at Scunthorpe Leisure Centre, in North Lincolnshire, where “users must follow the required dress code for this session (T-shirts and shorts/leggings that cover below the knee)”.

In Glasgow, a men-only swimming session is organised by a local mosque group at North Woodside Leisure Centre, at which swimmers must be covered from navel to knee.

At a women-only class organised by a Muslim teacher at Blackbird Leys Swimming Pool, Oxford, to encourage Muslim women to learn to swim, most participants wear “modest” outfits although normal costumes are permitted.

The dress codes have provoked an angry reaction among critics who say they encourage division and resentment between Muslims and non-Muslims, putting strain on social cohesion. Continue Reading →
