Hamas blocks 50 from leaving Gaza

The Jerusalem Post

Pals and Hamas50 Palestinians who were supposed to cross into Israel from the Gaza Strip Tuesday, mostly to receive medical treatment here, were repelled by Hamas security forces at the Beit Hameches Junction just west of the Erez Crossing in the north-eastern Gaza Strip.

Hamas operatives blocked off the road and prevented the Palestinians from reaching the crossing with Israel.

Israeli officials said the Hamas blockade was likely due to suspicions that among the sick were disguised Fatah officials trying to sneak out of Gaza to attend the Fatah conference which got underway in Bethlehem Tuesday morning.

Hamas men at the junction ordered those arriving at the crossing to return to the Interior Ministry in Gaza City and have their permits to leave the Strip reissued.

The officials also said it was likely that by the end of the day, Hamas would allow the Palestinians to cross into Israel, once it was verified that they indeed required medical attention.

The Fatah conference is the sixth of its kind, and the previous one took place in 1989. It is expected to bring together more than 2,000 delegates from many Arab countries.

Delegates are expected to vote for two of Fatah’s main bodies, the Central Committee and the Revolutionary Council. The first institution consists of 21 members, while the second has 120 seats. Delegates will also discuss Fatah’s strategy, especially concerning the conflict with Israel.

Who wears the pants in Sudan? Muhammed, of course.

This coming Tuesday, Sudanese born Lubna Hussein, a former journalist, could receive forty lashes if found guilty of breaching Article 152 of  Sudanese criminal law. The Article prohibits dressing indecently in public. Ms. Hussein and thirteen other women, one as young as fourteen, were all charged under the law for wearing--trousers. Most of the accused pleaded guilty and paid a fine to avoid the brutal punishment, but Hussein standing alone and resolved, has chosen to challenge those willing to impart the radical sharia law that has been imposed upon her. Journalist James Copnall covers Lubna Hussein’s story in The Guardian/Observer, U.K.

” I’m not afraid of being flogged. It doesn’t hurt. But it is insulting” Hussein defiantly states.

She goes on to say, ” Islam does not say whether a woman can wear trousers or not. The clothing I was wearing when the police caught me- I pray in them. I pray to my God in them. And neither does Islam flog women because of what they wear. If any Muslim in the world says Islamic law or sharia law flogs women for their clothes, then let them show me what the Qur’an or Prophet Muhammed said on that issue. There is nothing. It is not about religion. It is about men treating women badly”.

Predictably, the Sudanese embassy in London has tried to avert media and international attention away from Ms. Hussein’s very public case focusing on a landmark ruling involving the Sudanese region of Abyei. Rather unsuccessful in this attempt, and desperate to shift media focus, they have resorted to the predictable accusation of Islamophobia and racism, issued here in an official statement. It reads:

“The floodgates of expert and non-expert comments on Sudan opened suddenly on 29 July in the wake of an indecency and antisocial behaviour case in Khartoum involving journalist Lubna A Hussein,” the statement read. “The case is still ongoing and it wouldn’t be appropriate to comment on it. The real question, which is relevant to the deep-rooted Islamophobic and anti-Arab prejudice, is th selective spotlight on Ms Lubna Ahmed Hussein and determined neglect of Abyei dispute’s result for eight long days.”

With all due respect to Ms. Hussein, I do not agree with her stance that this indecency/antisocial behaviour law has nothing to do with religion. Of course it does, at least by way of those who on insist that sharia has legal legitimacy through divine authority. I do agree with her though, that at this basis, it is a conduit for absolute misogyny and gender apartheid. One thing we must all agree upon is that her sheer defiance in the face of such brutality is a sign of a deep respect for herself, of her bravery and her willingness to help bring human dignity to all Muslim women.

Lubna Hussein: ‘I’m not afraid of being flogged. It doesn’t hurt. But it is insulting’

Lubna Hussein could receive 40 lashes if found guilty on Tuesday of being indecently dressed – by wearing trousers. In her first major interview, she tells James Copnall in Khartoum why she is determined to fight on, whatever danger she faces.

Lubna HusseinLubna Hussein pictured in the Khartoum cafe where she was arrested. Photograph: Observer

Sitting in the restaurant where her ordeal began, Lubna Hussein looks at the offending item of clothing that caused all the trouble and laughs softly. “In Sudan, women who wear trousers must be flogged!” she says, her eyes widening at the thought. The former journalist faces up to 40 lashes and an unlimited fine if she is convicted of breaching Article 152 of Sudanese criminal law, which prohibits dressing indecently in public.

What exactly constitutes “indecent” is not clear. Last month Lubna was among a crowd listening to an Egyptian singer in a restaurant in a swish area of Khartoum when policemen surged in. They ordered Lubna and other women to stand up to check what they were wearing, and arrested all those who had trousers on. Lubna, who was wearing loose green slacks and a floral headscarf, was taken to the police station.

“There were 13 of us, and the only thing we had in common was that we were wearing trousers,” Lubna says. “Ten of the 13 women said they were guilty, and they got 10 lashes and a fine of 250 Sudanese pounds (about £65). One girl was only 13 or 14. She was so scared she urinated on herself.”

Lubna asked for a lawyer, so her case was delayed. Despite the risks, she is determined that her trial should go ahead. Before her initial hearing last Wednesday, she had 500 invitation cards printed, and sent out emails with the subject line: “Sudanese journalist Lubna invites you again to her flogging tomorrow.”

The court was flooded with women’s rights activists, politicians, diplomats and journalists, as well as well-wishers. During the hearing, Lubna announced that she would resign from her job as a public information officer with the United Nations, which would have provided her with immunity, to fight the case. The judge agreed, and adjourned the trial until Tuesday.

Lubna says she has no fear of the punishment she might face. “Afraid of what? No, I am not afraid, really,” she insists. “I think that flogging does not hurt, but it is an insult. Not for me, but for women, for human beings, and also for the government of Sudan. How can you tell the world that the government flogs the people? How can you do that?”

She is determined to face prosecution in order to change the law. “It is not for me. It is my chance to defend the women of Sudan. Women are often arrested and flogged because of what they wear. This has been happening for 20 years. Afterwards some of them don’t continue at high school or university, sometimes they don’t return to their family, and sometimes if the girls have a future husband, perhaps the relationship comes to an end.”

Lubna, a widow in her 30s, says women have faced similar punishments, mainly in silence, ever since President Omar el-Bashir seized power in 1989. For much of the time since then, Sudan has been at loggerheads with the west. It provided shelter for Osama bin Laden in the 1990s, and is still on an American list of countries that sponsor terrorism, although a senior US official said recently that there was no justification for this.

But Lubna says her concerns are not political. Her frustration stems from what she believes is an erroneous interpretation of her religion.

“Islam does not say whether a woman can wear trousers or not. The clothes I was wearing when the police caught me – I pray in them. I pray to my God in them. And neither does Islam flog women because of what they wear. If any Muslim in the world says Islamic law or sharia law flogs women for their clothes, let them show me what the Qur’an or Prophet Muhammad said on that issue. There is nothing. It is not about religion, it is about men treating women badly.”

Since news of the case broke, Lubna has been celebrated in the western press. She is bemused by the thought of being seen as a heroine, and even more by the idea – suggested by some British newspapers – that she was targeted because she is a Christian. “I am a Muslim, and a good Muslim,” she says.

In response to the articles about her case, the Sudanese embassy in London pointed out there had been next to no coverage of a recent landmark arbitration ruling on the region of Abyei, which is contested by the north and the south following two decades of civil war. Despite fears that it might spark renewed conflict, both sides announced they would respect the ruling.

Sitting in the Khartoum restaurant as the fierce late-afternoon sun intrudes through the windows, Lubna dismisses the notion that western praise might be a drawback in a country like Sudan. “In Sudan, we like the west,” she exclaims, apparently agitated by the idea that people might not realise this. “For many Sudanese, our dream is to go to the west.” But the government doesn’t always give that impression. “The government thinks differently to the people. The government hopes to be friends with the west, but sometimes they try to look tough, that’s all.”

Nevertheless, she is worried that the foreign attention on her case could lead to further cultural misunderstandings. “The west really doesn’t understand Islam,” she says. “Because as Muslims we know that, if the police catch girls and arrest and flog them, we know this is not Islam. But when the government of Bashir does that, the west says: ‘Oh, that is Islam.’ It presents a bad face of Islam.”

Since her initial hearing, Lubna has been bombarded with messages and phone calls from all over the world. Her family has been supportive, she says, perhaps in part because they are used to it: she was first arrested 15 years ago as a campaigning university student, and has been called in by the police on many subsequent occasions, often after writing satirical articles for the newspaper her husband set up, Sahafa

But one phone call from within the country touched her most. “I talked to my colleagues in the court, the 10 who have already been flogged. At the beginning they were very sad, and one of them was in a bad psychological state. But when she saw me on TV and in the newspaper, she called me to say that this was good. In the beginning, her neighbours and her family didn’t believe she was flogged just for the clothes she was wearing. So she called me to say thank you.”

The issue is rapidly becoming politicised. The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, which represents the mainly non-Muslim south in a coalition government, has called for the law to be changed. Under a 2005 peace deal, sharia law is not supposed to apply to non-Muslims, and not the least controversial among Lubna’s statements is that several of the 10 women she says were flogged were non-Muslims.

But, for Lubna, the heart of the case goes beyond the north-south divide and its ramifications. She says nothing in Islam justifies flogging a woman for wearing trousers. “I am not a hero, I just don’t have a choice,” she says, fiddling with her pale gold headscarf.

When she spoke to the Observer, Lubna was wearing trousers again, this time blue jeans. Will her experience change the way she dresses? “I have trousers, I have dresses, I have traditional Sudanese clothes – I wear what I like. I won’t change.”

And what will happen if the judge decides, as is still possible, that she was indecently dressed, and sentences her to 40 lashes?

“I will take my case to the upper court, even to the constitutional court,” she insists, measuring her words. “And if they find me guilty, I am ready to receive not only 40 lashes, I am ready for 40,000 lashes. If all women must be flogged for what they wear, I am ready to be flogged 40,000 times.”

Muslims Abduct Two Christian Coptic Girls in Egypt

Ripped from Jihad Watch

Christian stolen in Egypt 2Christian stolen in Egypt(AINA) — Mrs. Samira Markos, who lives in Alexandria, sent an appeal to Egypt4Christ advocacy, pleading with them to rescue her daughter from forced Islamization. The mother said that her daughter Amira Morgan (born 9/9/1992) was abducted on 7-18-2009 on her way to work in the plastics factory near their home.

Egypt4Christ sent one of its members in Alexandria to verify the mother’s plea and met with one of the family relatives who corroborated the story.

“At 10 o’clock of the same morning someone called me and asked if I was Amira’s mother. He introduced himself as Sheikh Mohammed, and said that my daughter is fine and will convert to Islam,” the mother said. “When I cried and begged him to let me have my daughter back, he said he would let me see her again after her conversion to Islam, and ended the call. I tried calling that cell phone back several time, but there never was a reply.”

The mother went to El-Sennin Mosque in her neighbourhood at 1.30 PM, after the Muslim noon prayers, and asked a bearded man emerging from the Mosque regarding Sheikh Mohammed, he laughed and said they have more than fifty Sheikh Mohammeds.

“When I started to cry at the Mosque entrance, one of them came to me and said ‘Listen, mother of Amira, I am warning you not to report the abduction to the police or do anything, the price will be your son Meena (9 years old) being slaughtered in front of your own eyes. I am not threatening, I’m talking seriously.'” He further said “Listen, your daughter Amira will convert to Islam next Friday, and we are now preparing her for that. Now go home and stay indoors until everything is quietly over.” Continue Reading →

6 killed in Pakistan as Muslims burn Christian homes

I’m amazed this made the news at all as previous incidents have been ignored in the past. For some reason CNN decided to print a paragraph on what would amount to an entire page if they really wanted to let people know what the Muslims in Pakistan have been up to.

Protesting Christian persicution in PakistanISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) — Six people were killed in Pakistan on Saturday when Muslim demonstrators set fire to houses in a Christian enclave and fighting broke out, local police said.

Police said Muslims were enraged over an alleged desecration of pages in the Quran at a Christian wedding last Saturday, and held a rally to protest. The Quran is the Muslim sacred text.

The Muslims went to the Christian community in Gojra City, 160 kilometers (100 miles) southwest of Lahore, and burned 40 to 50 houses. Muslims and Christians exchanged gunfire.

Police said efforts to settle the concerns with dialogue so far have failed.

On Thursday, 15 Christian houses in the region were also torched.

Pakistan is predominantly Muslim but has a small Christian community.

Meanwhile, police in Islamabad reported Friday that an al Qaeda member thought to be involved in several attacks was arrested.

Bin Yamin, a senior police official in Islamabad, identified the suspect as Rao Shakir Ali.

Police believe he was involved in strikes on targets such as the Danish Embassy, a rally of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chauhdary, police, and a hotel.

The suspect is a resident of Sargodha, which is 165 kilometers (about 100 miles) northwest of Lahore and has a house in Rawalpindi that has been used to facilitate insurgent acts, police said.

The would-be King of Queen

It may be one thing to poke spirited fun at the present Queen of England over a frosty brew at the local pub, but quite another to call for her moral and legal sentencing as a homicidal, genocidal murderer. Nevertheless, Anjem Choudary, Britain’s most prominent example of a gross failure of human decency unzips himself as the would-be King to beat all Queens. I would have loved to see him go head to head with Elizabeth 1st; the horse-riding bastard child who would eventually propel her people to unite against the Spanish Armada to defend England, set free those in jail deeming them rightful defenders of their land and light a-torch England’s shores to defend and instill the principle of democracy:

My loving people, we have been persuaded by some, that are careful of our safety, to take heed how we commit ourselves to armed multitudes, for fear of treachery; but I assure you, I do not desire to live to distrust my faithful and loving people. Let tyrants fear; I have always so behaved myself that, under God, I have placed my chiefest strength and safeguard in the loyal hearts and good will of my subjects. And therefore I am come amongst you at this time, not as for my recreation or sport, but being resolved, in the midst and heat of the battle, to live or die amongst you all; to lay down, for my God, and for my kingdom, and for my people, my honor and my blood, even the dust. I know I have but the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart of a king, and of a king of England, too; and think foul scorn that Parma or Spain, or any prince of Europe, should dare to invade the borders of my realms: to which, rather than any dishonor should grow by me, I myself will take up arms; I myself will be your general, judge, and rewarder of every one of your virtues in the field. I know already, by your forwardness, that you have deserved rewards and crowns; and we do assure you, on the word of a prince, they shall be duly paid you. In the mean my lieutenant general shall be in my stead, than whom never prince commanded a more noble and worthy subject; not doubting by your obedience to my general, by your concord in the camp, and by your valor in the field, we shall shortly have a famous victory over the enemies of my God, of my kingdom, and of my people.

Elizabeth I of England – 1588

Islamist Choudary goes on to preach ” She is the one who applauds her sons and daughters to go out and massacre hundreds of thousands of innocent people”– words spoken while bilking on handouts at the hands of the British taxpayer.

FANATICS led by a sponging Islamic extremist enraged MPs yesterday by publicly demanding the Queen is prosecuted – for GENOCIDE.

Rabble-rouser Anjem Choudary’s cohorts accused British troops of wiping out the civilian population in Afghanistan and said it was Her Majesty’s fault because she is “the head of this country”.

Anjem Choudary

Extremist … Anjem Choudary

In an internet rant to fellow extremist Muslims, they declare: “She is the one who applauds her sons and daughters to go out and massacre hundreds and thousands of innocent people.

“Shouldn’t she be tried for genocide and the extermination of a nation?” The fanatics insist: “Yes.” Labour MP Andrew Dismore said of the shameful attack that appeared on a website linked to Choudary: “Never mind calling for the prosecution of the Queen.

“The Queen should prosecute HIM. It’s about time he was busted.”

Our Boys ... doing their job

Our Boys … doing their job

Fellow MP Patrick Mercer – chairman of the Commons counter- terrorism sub-committee – branded it an “insult to our monarch.”

The ex-soldier stormed: “We must recognise Mr Choudary’s words for what they are – weapons being wielded by al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

“This is the next phase of an enemy operation in our country.”

———————-

Would his sermon not aptly apply to much of the Muslim world and carried beyond, where it is commonplace to exact strife and brutality upon innocents in the name of Islam? Choudary in all of his cowardice and postured holy stance would no doubt have been swallowed whole by the past Elizabeth, a thought unbearable to a Muslim extremist, especially at the hands of a woman.

If the Queen is to be admonished for anything, it would stem from the forget fullness of the warrior words of a Queen past, stern and brandished by a fierce virtue and loyal duty to her land and people; the young, red-headed Queen who would have proudly and fearlessly stood up in the face of such thuggery, mockery, contempt and brutishness.

“Let tyrants fear; I have always so behaved myself that, under God, I have placed my chiefest strength and safeguard in the loyal hearts and good will of my subjects……….”

Muslim force ‘maries’ 15 year old, rapes her siter, mom helps, ho hum dog bites man.

A headline like this when the civilized world was still unaware of the daily horror and barbarity which is Islam would have made tongues wag and TV stations pour forth harsh questions for weeks. Now, it’s barely a headline in one of the very few media venues that bother with this sort of thing at all. Of course, had it been a non Muslim, say a white Christian well, that’s news. I suppose in a way white Christians should be flattered that the default position for them is to such a near ‘majestically’ higher standard. Or perhaps the Muslim world should riot because the worlds media holds them to such a preternaturally low one. Of course they will not. Pedophilia, rape, forced ‘marriage’ and so on are orthodoxy in Islam. It is just copying the behavior and teachings of their perfect man, Mohamed.

Stratford Police Station, East LondonSpecialist child abuse detectives at Stratford in East London have launched an investigation
Police are hunting a suspected illegal immigrant accused of raping a 15-year-old schoolgirl who had been forced to marry him.

The Bangladeshi, in his 40s, is also wanted over claims that he sexually assaulted the girl’s 12-year-old sister.

He disappeared after the elder girl, now aged 17, contacted the Metropolitan Police on June 26 because she feared she was now being forced into a second marriage.

Specialist child abuse detectives based at Stratford were told that the girl, from an Asian family living in Bethnal Green in London’s East End, had been the subject of a forced marriage in April 2007 when she was 15.

Officers have arrested a 53-year-old woman, believed to be another family member, on suspicion of aiding and abetting rape and actual bodily harm. The arrest for assault is linked to an attack on a six-year-old boy.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: ‘The sham marriage took place at an address in the E2 area. She alleged she was subsequently raped by the man.

‘Further inquiries revealed a second girl, then aged 12, had also been sexually assaulted by the man.

‘A 53-year-old woman was arrested on July 7 on suspicion of aiding and abetting rape and actual bodily harm.

‘She has subsequently been bailed to return on September 1 to an East London police station pending further enquiries.

‘The male suspect remains outstanding and extensive police inquiries continue to trace him.’

Sudanese woman wears pants to indecency trial

We used to call Western feminists brave when they wore pants in the 60s challenging the orthodoxy of cultural norms. None of those women faced 40 lashes and an unlimited fine. 40 lashes by the way, is painful beyond imagining. There are videos here on vlad of men being torn apart mentally by far fewer than 40.

Here is a woman who is a hero by real standards. I hope the world is paying attention. Had this been in the 60s when liberalism was actually liberalism, she would certainly have achieved the desired effect. International outrage would most certainly bring about change, and if not, at least massive international attention and embarrassment on this government.

I doubt modern ‘liberals’ will be so caring. After all, woman’s rights, the fight against sharia law and justice and equality for minorities have somehow become positions of ‘the far right wing’

KHARTOUM – A Sudanese woman facing 40 lashes for wearing pants in public made her first appearance in a court packed with supporters Wednesday, in what her lawyer described as a test case of Sudan’s decency laws.

There were chaotic scenes as Lubna Hussein, a former journalist who works for the United Nations, attended the hearing wearing the same green slacks that got her arrested for immodest dress.

Indecency cases are not uncommon in Sudan, where there is a large cultural gap between the mostly Muslim and Arab-oriented north and the mainly black and Christian south.

But Ms. Hussein has attracted attention by publicizing her case, inviting journalists to hearings and using it to campaign against dress codes sporadically imposed in the capital

The case was adjourned Wednesday as lawyers discussed whether her status as a UN employee gave her legal immunity.

After the hearing, defense lawyer Nabil Adib Abdalla said Hussein had agreed to resign from the United Nations in time for the next court session Aug. 4 to make sure the case continued.

“First of all she wants to show she is totally innocent, and using her immunity will not prove that,” Mr. Abdalla told reporters. “Second she wants to fight the law. The law is too wide. It needs to be reformed … This is turning into a test case. Human rights groups will be watching this closely.”

He said Ms. Hussein was ready to face the maximum penalty for the criminal offense of wearing indecent dress in public — 40 lashes and an unlimited fine.

Before the hearing, Ms. Hussein told Reuters she was arrested in early July when police raided a party at a restaurant in Khartoum’s Riyadh district.

“Thousands of women are punished with lashes in Sudan but they stay silent,” she said. “The law is being used to harass women and I want to expose this.” Continue Reading →

Man who sexually assaulted sisters sentenced in absentia after fleeing following conviction

Some may question the categories I used, and the inclusion of this article on my blog. However a quick read of Koran and its verses concerning sex with infidels and children should satisfy the reasonable skeptic that this is an Islamic sanctified activity. I think especially the reinforcement of orthodox Islamic scripture by the founder of the modern state of Iran should help drive it home. That and sura 2:223

By Andrew Seymour, The Ottawa CitizenJuly 29, 2009

OTTAWA-A man who convinced a judge not to send him to jail after being found guilty of sexually assaulting two children has been sentenced in absentia to three years in prison after disappearing.

Ibrahim Farhat, 34, received the sentence Tuesday after being found guilty by a jury in March of sexual assault and sexual interference for repeated incidents of sexual touching on two sisters between 1998 and 2003.

Crown prosecutors had been seeking to have him put in jail immediately following his conviction, but Farhat was released after his lawyer convinced Ontario Superior Court Justice Heidi Polowin that he was not a flight risk.

Farhat was “a man who had broken the law and walked away with it,” one of the sisters told the court in her victim impact statement.

“What were once my memories of childhood and adolescence are now his. What should have been some of the happiest, most freeing memories, he holds hostage,” said the now 23-year-old victim, who can’t be identified due to a publication ban.

“He has robbed me of them and turned them into his own. And now he is free. He may be running, but he is still running with freedom … his, mine and my sister’s,” she said.

“This man preyed on the innocence of children, on their weaknesses, their fears, and when he could not stop or help himself, he was brought to you to do so for him. And now we find ourselves lost,” she said, breaking down in tears.

Before passing sentence, the judge said Farhat’s flight “disturbed her greatly.” Polowin described how she accepted his lawyer’s arguments that he had never missed a court date, had a wife and three young children, was gainfully employed and had surrendered his passports.

Polowin said what most convinced her Farhat should be released was his promise to voluntarily attend a sexual behaviours assessment at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. Court heard he never even showed up for the initial appointment.

“This court put its trust in Mr. Farhat. His failure to attend for the sexual behaviours assessment, the pre-sentence report and his absconding is a breach of that trust,” said Polowin, who called his actions following his conviction “reprehensible.”

Trevor Brown was the lawyer who argued Farhat should be released following his conviction, but later asked to be removed from the case.

“All I can say is that I asked to be removed as counsel of record because he absconded from the jurisdiction and stopped communicating with me,” Brown said Tuesday. He said he could not make any further comment as he is still bound by lawyer-client confidentiality rules.

Polowin said there were several aggravating factors in the case, including Farhat’s serious breach of trust as someone close to the family of the victims. In several instances, Polowin said the sexual touching occurred when the father or other family members of the victims were in the next room. At the time of the incidents, the victims were between eight and 15 years old.

Assistant Crown attorney Moiz Karimjee asked Polowin to sentence Farhat to seven years in prison, a lengthy sentence he argued was justified given the nature of the crimes and the fact Farhat fled even though he knew prosecutors had concerns he would fail to show up for sentencing.

Karimjee said Farhat was “denying the victims the satisfaction of seeing that justice is done.

“They participated in a justice system, attended a preliminary hearing, testified at trial and now they are faced with Ibrahim Farhat not being present at sentencing,” said Karimjee.

However, Polowin found a seven-year sentence was too long considering case law from similar crimes and sentenced him to three years in prison instead.

Whether Farhat ever serves a day of that sentence is still in question. Ottawa police Det. Allison Cookson testified that the last contact anyone had with Farhat was in April.

Farhat’s wife and children have since left Canada for Lebanon, she said. Farhat, who was not represented during the hearing, is now being sought on an arrest warrant.

Attempts to locate Farhat have so far been unsuccessful, Cookson said, although police have received and are following up tips, including one that he has been seen in Calgary.

Before handing down her decision, Polowin told the two victims their “extremely” articulate and moving victim impact statements would help her be a better judge for years to come.

“It will help me as a judge to always remember the effect on the victim as we move through this process,” she said.

In her victim impact statement, the younger of the two sisters wrote about how the justice system goes to great lengths to remove “all that is humanistic” from the legal process.

“The emphasis is put on facts, litigation and reason,” the now 19-year-old woman said, leaving very little place for emotion.

“What I was depicting was not something I had seen. I was subjected to it. I felt it. I lived it,” the woman said, describing how it was easy to forget she was a victim. “In light of decisions made along the way, I find myself wondering if others in the court had too forgotten.”

The victim added that in her family and culture, she was “just a girl,” and had since had female relatives look at her in disgust and refuse to shake her hand, “not because I had been abused, but because I spoke it.” Neither her mother nor her father attended the sentencing hearing.

Farhat is described as Middle Eastern. He is five-foot-seven with a heavy build, short black hair, brown eyes and a moustache and goatee, according to police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ottawa police sexual assault/child abuse unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5944, or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.

‘Gazan killed daughter for owning phone’

A Gaza man is being held on suspicion he bludgeoned his daughter with an iron chain, cracking her skull in a particularly brutal family “honor killing,” two human rights groups said Wednesday, citing police and forensics reports.

The groups’ reports said that the assault was triggered by Jawdat Najjar’s discovery that his daughter Fadia – a 27-year-old divorced mother of five – owned a cell phone. He suspected she used it to speak to a man outside the family, according to the groups’ reports.

Dr. Mohammed Sultan, who examined the victim, told The Associated Press that her head and face were bloodied, her body covered by bruises and that she suffered internal bleeding.

On Wednesday, a northern Gaza police officer confirmed that Najjar turned himself in a day after the July 23 killing but did not give details. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to the media.

Three of the woman’s brothers were also detained on suspicion that they acted as accomplices, said the rights groups Mezan and the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), citing police and forensics reports. The groups did not say how they obtained the reports.

Fadia Najjar was the 10th victim of a so-called “honor killing” this year in the Palestinian territories and among Arab communities in Israel, according to rights groups.

In such killings, a woman’s life is taken by male relatives who suspect her of inappropriate conduct. Such killings are still widespread in the Middle East, where a woman’s perceived misconduct can hurt the standing of a family and where tradition says the “stain” can only be removed by shedding her blood.

Traditionally, assailants have received light sentences, but the killing of Najjar shocked even activists used to detailing such crimes.

Mezan and the PCHR said that Najjar’s father used an iron chain to beat her, while also kicking and punching her for about 40 minutes until she died of a fatal blow to the head, said Mezan and the PCHR.

“It’s shocking,” said Samir Zakout of Mezan. “But it’s not surprising because killers know they won’t be punished harshly.”

In the West Bank and Gaza, “honor killing” assailants serve between six months and three years in prison, said Mona Shawa of PCHR.

In Jordan, officials said Wednesday they have set up special tribunals to deal with honor killings, hoping to speed up trials.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch reported Wednesday that the Syrian government abolished a law that waived punishment for some honor killings and now allows judges to sentence perpetrators to at least two years jail.

Harsh video of acid attack in Pakistan plus machine translation of article.

Warning: this video is hard to watch. The woman’s disfigurement is severe.

Below is a machine translation of the article from Danish. I will try and get this properly done, including having the video subtitled sometime in the next 24 hours if I can find a Danish translator. Meanwhile, I think you will get the gist of it. Muslim woman acts like human being, insisting on getting an education and or choosing her own mate, has acid thrown in her face, spends life as a blind circus freak. I cleaned up some of the syntax in the machine translation. i added the word ‘sharia’ as an assumption which I put in brackets. There likely is no actual law in Koran requiring acid to be poured on women who disobey, but there is a great deal in sharia on what constitutes disobedience for women and how harsh the punishment should be.

Right now in London is a 24-year-old Danish Muslim man in critical condition after he was attacked with acid. The police believe that the attack may be related honor because he had a relationship with a married Muslim woman.

was pouring acid in throat

Indeed, punishment with acid a known phenomenon in several predominantly Muslim countries.  Among others, the Taliban in Afghanistan throws acid on schoolgirls in order to keep them away from learning, and in Pakistan are hundreds of women each year, attacked with sulfuric acid, if they do not comply with the family will and forced marriages.

TV 2 | News correspondent Ulla Terkelsen has visited a women’s center for victims of sulfuric acid in Islamabad.

Here, she meets she 23 years old Naziran whose face is disfigured after an acid attack.

Nazirans man whom she had two children, died a half years ago.  As it happened, she got to know his laws, that she should marry with her deceased husband’s big brother, and thus become his wife number two.

She refused Naziran and punishment, (sharia) laws, is to pour acid over her head one night when she slept in the courtyard.

Below, an acid attack on a man in the UK. Clearly acid has become a weapon of choice rather than one of convenience.

A SCHOOLBOY aged just 11 beat-up a Jewish man because of his religion.

Because of the convicted boys young age, he could not be named. But we can do google searches on the area he is from. I wonder what we might find. Could it be a Swedish area? A Danish one? Perhaps this area is predominantly Luxembourgian? That might explain the violent anti-semitism there.

Synagogue on Bewick Road

From The Sunday Sun UK:

The school-aged attacker launched himself at the victim – in his late 20s – landing a punch on him outside the synagogue, on Bewick Road, Gateshead.

After spearheading the onslaught, the 11-year-old stepped to the side as a gang of older attackers “piled-on” the isolated man, leaving him bloodied.

The child-attacker is now at the start of a four month supervision order made by magistrates at Blaydon youth court, after pleading guilty to racially-aggravated assault by beating at an earlier hearing.

His young age means he cannot be named.

The court heard that the youngster had been involved in drugs and alcohol.

After reading reports, chairman Doug Howell said: “It says here you haven’t used cannabis for a while.

“At your age, I can’t understand how you can get your hands on alcohol or drugs at all. Don’t do it.”

The court heard that the attacker, from the central area of Gateshead, was stood outside the Gateshead Hebrew Congregation, at the junction of Bewick Road and Rydal Street in Bensham, Gateshead, with a group of older males.

The youth squared up to a Jewish man after older lads urged him on in March this year.

Robert Fulford: Western feminists mute on ravages of shariah

Canada’s National Post:

h/t grace

Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein, an angry Khartoum journalist who works for the UN in Sudan, has started a campaign against shariah law by elevating a local police matter into an international embarrassment: She’s invited the world to witness her judicial flogging, thus making her case part of the struggle between religious traditionalists and independent women — a struggle that now may encompass the quadruple murder that was revealed a world away, in Kingston, Ont., on Thursday.

In Khartoum, the General Discipline Police Authority patrols the streets, charged with maintaining shariah standards of public decency. Recently it raided a restaurant and arrested 13 women, including al-Hussein, for the crime of … wearing trousers.

Since 1991, that’s been a violation of the Sudanese criminal code. More precisely, it is classified as a violation of public morality. While erratically enforced, the rule is serious enough to carry a penalty of 40 lashes. Ten of the women arrested with al-Hussein pleaded guilty and received a reduced sentence of 10 lashes. But al-Hussein and two others demanded their day in court and al-Hussein decided to provoke a scandal by distributing 500 personal invitations to her trial. She expects to be found guilty (she won’t be allowed a lawyer or a chance to speak), so she informed her guests that they’ll also be expected at her flogging. Continue Reading →

Family members charged with first-degree murder in Kingston canal deaths

Picture 7.jpgFrom The Ottawa Citizen:

KINGSTON, Ont. — Three family members from Montreal were charged Thursday in the deaths of three young sisters and a woman last month in Kingston, Ont.

The girls’ father Mohammad Shafii, mother Tooba Mohammad Yahya and 18-year-old brother, Hamid Mohammed Shafii, were each charged with four counts of first-degree murder and four counts of conspiracy to commit murder, Kingston police said at a news conference Thursday.

“It was a needless and sensitive loss of human life,” said Kingston police chief Stephen Tanner. ” . . . They had their lives cut short by members of their own family.”

The bodies of three sisters — Zainab Shafii, 19, Sahar Shafii, 17 and Geeti Shafii, 13 — and their female relative Rona Amir Mohammed, 50, were discovered in a submerged car, near the Kingston Mills locks on the Rideau Canal June 30. The older woman has now been confirmed to be the girls’ father’s first wife.

While Kingston police have always referred to the deaths as suspicious, they revealed Thursday that they had been looking at this case as a homicide all along.

A coroner’s investigation has been completed but police say they will not release the cause of deaths of the four women until they are before the courts.

The three accused had told police the family were returning to Montreal after vacationing and visiting relatives in Niagara Falls.

The family, travelling in two cars, stopped at a hotel late at night during the trip and, according to Yahya, the girls’ mother, that her eldest daughter had asked for the keys to their Nissan Altima.

Yahya said she assumed her daughter wanted to practise driving and took the car without permission before it somehow ended up in the canal.

Police said Thursday that the three accused were actually the ones who “operated” the Nissan.

The second vehicle, a Lexus, which had been driving back to Montreal by the girls’ brother, has been linked to the crime scene, police said.

Investigators said it took three weeks to make the arrests because it was a “unique” case involving information coming in from overseas. Tanner confirmed that an email was received by police by someone who claimed to be a relative. He would not say if it was from Diba Masoomi, a woman living in Niort, France who claims to be the older woman’s sister. He said that would be revealed at a later date.

Three children aged 8 to 15 have been taken in child protection services in Montreal.

The three sisters were all born in Kabul, Afghanistan. Their family moved to Dubai in the 1990s and to Canada two years ago.
