  • Lawyer to sue Danish newspapers for libel
  • Cartoons “a slur on descendants”
  • One paper has already apologised

NEARLY 95,000 descendants of Mohammed are going to sue 10 newspapers for publishing “blasphemous” cartoons of the prophet.

Faisal Yamani, a Saudi lawyer acting for the descendants, claims that the cartoons – which first appeared in 2005 and caused violent protests by Muslims around the world – are defamatory.

One of the 12 cartoons depicts Mohammed wearing a bomb-shaped turban.

The Sunday Times said that although the cartoons were published by Danish newspapers, Mr Yamani plans to pursue legal action in England, where libel laws are weighted towards the plaintiff.

English lawyers expect that he will argue that the cartoons were published in Britain via the internet and are a direct slur on his clients, who live in the Middle East, north Africa and even Australia.

Mark Stephens, a British lawyer who saw Mr Yamani’s missive to the newspapers, told The Sunday Times: “Direct descendants of the prophet have a particular place within Muslim society … By effectively criticising and making fun of the prophet you are, by implication, holding them up to scandal, contempt and public ridicule.

“The question is, is that defamatory in English law?”

He said that although many judges would dismiss such a case, “it is obviously a very highly charged issue and if they do throw it out, it becomes political”.

Mr Yamani has already won an apology from the Danish newspaper Politiken for printing the cartoons.

The cartoons first appeared in Jyllands-Posten as part of its campaign to promote freedom of expression.

However, the paper’s offices have been evacuated several times after security threats and the artist behind the bomb cartoon, Kurt Westergaard, was forced to go into hiding. In January this year a man was shot trying to get into his home.

Suitcase murder: Omar Hussain charged in honour killing of Banaz Mahmod

From The Telegraph U.K

Man charged over body found in suitcase

Omar Hussain has been charged with murder after the decomposed body of Banaz Mahmod was found in a suitcase.

Published: 8:00AM GMT 20 Mar 2010

The body of Miss Mahmod, 20, was found in Handsworth, Birmingham three months after she disappeared from her family home in Mitcham, south London in January 2006.

Hussain, 30, of Smethwick, Birmingham, will appear at Greenwich Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with her murder.

He is also charged with the attempted kidnap of Rahmat Suleimani, Miss Mahmod’s boyfriend, and with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Miss Mahmod began a relationship with Mr Suleimani after leaving an unhappy arranged marriage.

Her father, Mahmod Mahmod, uncle Ari Mahmod and a third man, Mohamad Hama, were jailed for life in 2007 for the so-called ”honour” killing.

Mr Suleimani was deemed unsuitable because he did not come from the small group of villages in Iraqi Kurdistan from which the Mahmods originated.

Islamic students refusing to share “multi-faith” prayer room

From Secularism.org:

A row over an Islamic prayer room that was recently closed at City University in London is threatening to turn into a religious war as Muslim students refuse to share a “multi-faith” space with non-Muslims. Instead, the Muslim students are using the pavement outside the college for their prayers.

The Muslim students say they can’t share with others because “a vast number of Muslim scholars throughout history believe it is impermissible for Muslims to offer prayers in a place where [a god] other than our Lord, Allah, is worshipped”. All-male groups have been praying on the pavement outside City since 15 February, with more than 200 reportedly turning up for Friday prayers in Northampton Square.

The protest follows a fight between members of the City Islamic Society and a gang of youths last November outside a building which previously housed the Muslim prayer room. Police described the attack, in which two students were stabbed, as racially aggravated. Earlier the same week, students reported being pelted with stones as they left the room. Continue Reading →

LONDON // A trial involving the sale of halal poultry at dozens of outlets of a fast-food chain across Britain has left groups of Christians and Muslims embroiled in two very different controversies.

On one hand, non-Muslim groups are setting up internet petitions against KFC’s move to sell halal-only products in the trial at 74 of its outlets across the country. On the other, Muslims themselves are questioning whether, in fact, the poultry being sold is truly halal.

The controversy follows a row in France, where seven stores in the Quick chain of hamburger restaurants switched to selling only halal turkey burgers, sparking protests from non-Muslim French communities. Continue Reading →

Master of taqiyya Tariq Ramadan, in Canada to peddle Brotherhood Islam

From The Ottawa Citizen

Radical or reformer?

Muslim intellectual Tariq Ramadan is described by many as a reformer, but the Swiss-born academic, who will be speaking Friday at Carleton University, has troubling allegiances to Islamist extremists, writes Robert Sibley.

By Robert Sibley, The Ottawa CitizenMarch 18, 2010

President of the European Muslim Network, Tariq Ramadan, has said his dream is to create a 'European Islam' where the continent's Muslims can find a proper place. But lately many question the intellectual's seemingly moderate stance.

Tariq Ramadan is often held up as the kind of Muslim intellectual able to build bridges between Islam and the West. The Swiss-born academic — “one of the most important intellectuals in the world,” says Slate magazine — is widely lauded as a “moderate,” a “reformer.”

Ramadan, a research fellow at St. Antony’s College in Oxford who lectures on Islamist thought, among other positions, is best known to North Americans for being denied a U.S. work visa in 2004 to take up an appointment at the University of Notre Dame. In Europe, though, he has spent much of the past two decades telling Muslims they need to modernize and trying to convince westerners they need not be suspicious of Islam. His purpose, he says, is to foster a “European Islam” where the continent’s Muslim population can find its proper place.

Ramadan will bring that message — or a variation on it — to Ottawa on Friday when he delivers the 26th annual Davidson Lecture at Carleton University’s Minto Centre. His talk, sponsored by the College of the Humanities and the Carleton Centre for the Study of Islam, is entitled “Identity and Engagement: Western Muslims and the Public Sphere.”

On Ramadan’s previous visits to Ottawa, he’s praised the capital as a place where “there is goodwill and a better understanding of immigrants” than elsewhere. During a 2005 visit, he lamented the us-versus-them psychology that often characterizes relations between Muslims and non-Muslims. “If we are each obsessed with the extremists on the other side we are not going to build together.”

Such sentiments are always worth considering, of course. The question for Friday’s audience, though, is whether they are believable.

Ramadan’s reputation as a “moderate” has come into question in recent years, with some reputable commentators suggesting Ramadan is a master practitioner of the Islamic doctrine of taqiyya, or dissimulation. Continue Reading →

“Show your face” Canadian Minister tells Muslim women

From The Toronto Sun

Tory minister faces veil controversy

By ELIZABETH THOMPSON, Parliamentary Bureau

Last Updated: March 18, 2010 6:23am

OTTAWA – Women who wear the niqab should have to show their faces when dealing with the federal civil service, says Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney. Kenney said he believes in personal liberty and opposes regulating what people wear.

“On the other hand, when it’s necessary we do expect people to show their face in … obtaining public services,” he said Wednesday. “In my own ministry, when individuals make an application for immigration or a visa and they’re interviewed by a Canadian public servant, they’re required to show their face.”

Kenney said the reason women are asked to remove their niqab, which covers the lower half of the face, is so officials can see their responses and they can communicate their problem. In those cases, the department arranges for a female civil servant “as often as possible,” he said.

Kenney’s comments come as a storm of controversy has erupted in Quebec over whether women who wear the niqab should have to remove their face veil in certain circumstances such as during a French class for immigrants.

The controversy was further fuelled this week when Quebec’s Human Rights Commission ruled that women wearing the Islamic face covering have to remove it for their health card photo and cannot demand to be served by another woman.

The commission also ruled in favour of the hijab, which covers the head but not the face. A client had complained about being served by a health board employee wearing a hijab, but the commission ruled the headdress did not have any bearing on the service they received.

Kenney’s comments come a day after the UN Human Rights Commission’s expert on minority issues tabled a report saying that while Canada had an impressive record, significant and persistent problems affect ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities. Gay McDougall cited negative experiences in public schools for black and Asian Canadians as well as higher unemployment and lower income rates, even for those who have higher education levels than most Canadians.

Kenney said Canada is viewed around the world as a model of equality of opportunity and minority rights.

Kuwaiti Goat Shagger “extremely Tired”

Man treated at hospital after having sex with animals in Kuwait

The unnamed Asian watchman reportedly explained to his employer that he had been doing ”sexual things” to the animals

“I was shocked during my last visit to the farm to see the watchman screaming in pain and I took him to the hospital in Farwaniya. There, doctors diagnosed him with a problem with his organ,” the farm owner was quoted as saying by Kuwaiti daily Al Rai on Saturday.

The unnamed watchman reportedly explained to his employer that he had been doing “sexual things” to the animals and that he may have contracted a dangerous disease. The farm owner said that the expatriate worker cried continiously and saying that he was “extremely tired.”

Readers’ comments on the internet ranged from sympathy for the lonely man to outrage for cruelty to animals. Many asked questions whether the animals were now fit for human consumption.

In 2006, a Sudanese man was forced to take a goat as his “wife”, after he was caught having sex with the animal.

The village council of elders ordered the man to pay a dowry of 15,000 Sudanese dinars ($50) to the goat’s owner who had surprised him with his goat.

The elders said the man should not be taken to the police, but rather pay a dowry for the goat because he used it as his wife.

ALGERIA: PRISON FOR VIOLENT HUSBANDS IS AGAINST KORAN, MUFTI

The following ANSAMED article neglects to mention that Mohamed is also quoted as saying: “No-one will ask as to why a man beats his wife” (Abu Dawud vol. 2, no. 2142)

Eeyore

(ANSAmed) – ALGIERS, MARCH 15 – The proposal to introduce prison terms for men who beat their wives goes against the Koran and the teachings of the prophet Mohamed, according to the head of Algeriàs Superior Islamic Council. Qaher Sharif fiercely criticised the bill presented to the head of state Abdelaziz Bouteflikàs by the head of the Consultative Council on Human Rights Farouk Qustantiti. “This man’s aim is to violate a law of the Koran and of the Sunnah, and he meddles in subjects that are beyond his competence”, Sharif said in an interview with the Arab-language edition of the daily newspaper El Khabar. “Hés done it before with the death penalty, and now with beatings,” he added, asking “what difference can it make to him what goes on between a man and his wife?” The President of the Islamic Council said that he was stunned by Qustantinìs proposal, because “God has already pointed out precisely the way that a husband must behave towards his wife”. He quoted verses 34 and 35 of the Surah on women, in which men are advised to “admonish women, confine them to their bed and beat them” should they commit “nushooz”, a term signifying both infidelity and a refusal of sexual intercourse. Sharif pointed out that the text is so precise that it indicates the method of punishment to be used against the wife, and that this should be neither “too insistent, nor provoke disfigurement”. O’Muslims: Islam calls for sharia on the Emerald Isle

Muslim website calls for ‘Sharia’ Islamic law in Ireland

An Irish Islamic website which argues for the introduction of “Sharia” law in Ireland had nearly 270,000 hits last month alone.

The site is targeted at what it calls Irish “O’Muslims,” the Muslim Public Affairs Council website, www.mpac.ie.

Sharia refers to the “way” Muslims should live or the “path” they must follow. Sharia is derived from the sacred text of Islam (the Koran) and traditions gathered from the life of the Islamic prophet Mohammed. Sharia deals with many aspects of life, including crime, politics, economics, banking, business, contracts, family, sexuality, hygiene, and social issues.

An Irish Islamic website which argues for the introduction of “Sharia” law in Ireland had nearly 270,000 hits last month alone.

An editorial post says introducing Sharia is a patriotic duty.

“And who could doubt that establishing the authority of Allah in the land is in the best interests of Ireland?” it asks. Continue Reading →

Phyllis Chesler: Victim blames herself for being raped and beaten by Muslim?

The other day, a pediatric nurse in New York City refused to dance with Mbarek Lafrem, a Moroccan man, in a New York City bar. What did Lafrem do? He followed her into the women’s bathroom where he attempted to rape and savagely beat her. The woman was found unconscious and is now hospitalized. She required 50 stitches to close just one of her lacerations; she also suffered a broken eye socket, a broken nose, skull fractures, and a busted jaw.

The media pointedly refrain from telling us that he is a Muslim, but with a name like “Mbarek” or ‘Mubarak,” what religion are we talking about? Lafrem now claims that she started it, that the nurse “berated him when he barged into the women’s restroom shortly after she’d rebuffed him on the dance floor.”

To a certain kind of man, from a certain kind of culture, women are always supposed to say yes, and when they say no they are provokers and deserve a beating. More: If the woman is a naked-faced infidel and dances with strange men in a public setting—she is, by definition, a prostitute and is not entitled to say no. Saying no is a “provocation” and deserves a beating. Or worse.

Now, let’s shuffle off to Buffalo, where Muzzammil ”Mo” Hassan—remember him?–is about to stand trial for beheading his wife, Aasiya Zubair Hassan. Guess what this monster’s claiming? That he’s the victim, that he was a “battered husband.” Guess what this crafty self-promoter has been doing from his jail cell? Writing letters to the media in his mother’s name in which he paints himself as the “abused” spouse. Mo’s letters also refer to an “epidemic” of battered men.

Backlash at the mosque The Telegraph

The influence of Muslim fundamentalists in east London is being challenged, says Andrew Gilligan .

Published: 7:14PM GMT 13 Mar 2010

In the two weeks since the Islamic Forum of Europe were exposed by The Sunday Telegraph and Channel 4’s Dispatches as hardline fundamentalists secretly infiltrating the political system, they have been furiously protesting their “proven track record of community cohesion”. Last week, however, the organisation showed its true face.

“We’ve tracked you down,” said the IFE’s community affairs co-ordinator, Azad Ali, in a webcast targeting the Channel 4 reporter “Atif”, who went undercover at the IFE’s headquarters, the East London Mosque, filming the group’s true views – and its boasts that it controlled the local Tower Hamlets council. “Yes, Atif, we’ve got a picture of you and a lot more than you thought we had. We’ve tracked you down to different places. And if people are gonna turn what I’ve just said into a threat, that’s their fault, innit?”

Mr Ali’s words sit strangely with his role as an official advisor to the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer, and to the police, but perhaps his annoyance is understandable. The undercover reporters filmed him saying: “Democracy, if it means not implementing the sharia, no one’s going to agree with that.”

The reporters found that, far from its protestations of being merely a “social welfare organisation”, the IFE is an organised political movement dedicated to creating an “Islamic social and political order” through “entryism” into mainstream democratic institutions. Continue Reading →
