Hizb ut-Tahrir: Demonstration in Amsterdam
“Come and support the Syrian uprising — men and women separately.”
The radical Islamic group Hizb ut-Tahrir organized a demonstration yesterday in Amsterdam to support the protesters in Syria. In an unusual move, the organizers separated male and female demonstrators, in accordance with strict Islamic law.

If there were any doubt that the Salafist groups were involved in the “Arab Spring” uprisings, yesterday’s event would remove them. Hizb ut-Tahrir’s support for the Syrian protesters indicates a substantial Salafist presence among the regime’s opponents.

Our Dutch correspondent Bolleke has compiled a report on what happened yesterday in Amsterdam:

Man sentenced to life for killing 5 family members

Prosecutors say he was angry they wouldn’t convert to Islam

Chicago Tribune:

James A. Larry was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to killing his mother, pregnant wife, infant son and two nieces last year on the South Side. (May 4, 2011)

A man who was angry that his family would not go along with his conversion to Islam was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday in the slayings of his mother, pregnant wife, infant son and two nieces in a rampage last year on the South Side.

James A. Larry, 33, of Madison, Wis., pleaded guilty last month to multiple counts of murder, attempted murder and the intentional homicide of an unborn child.

The bald, bearded defendant issued a quiet apology in Judge James Linn’s courtroom, as several surviving members of the family stood at a podium and clutched one another.

“I’m sorry for what I did to my family,” Larry said, standing in a tan jail jumpsuit, his hands clasped behind his back. “I regret it every day, and I pray for them.”

Family members chose not to submit victim-impact statements for the judge to consider and declined to speak after the hearing, telling a court liaison they were simply relieved the case was over.

Prosecutors said Larry came to Chicago in April 2010 bent on slaughtering his relatives at the home in the Marquette Park neighborhood. He had converted to Islam while serving a prison sentence in Wisconsin for a weapons conviction.

“He was upset at his wife and their family — he felt disrespected that they would not join his religion,” Assistant State’s Attorney Jim McKay said. “It didn’t matter if they were young or old, pregnant or not. He wanted them dead.”

The massacre began in the early morning hours April 14, at the family home in the 7400 block of South Mozart Street. Larry first shot his mother, Leona Larry, 57, as she slept on a sofa in the living room. He then went systematically through three first-floor bedrooms, fatally shooting his wife, Twanda Thompson, 19; his 7-month-old son, Jihad; his 3-year-old niece, Keleasha Larry; and his 16-year-old niece, Keyshai Fields, who was pregnant. Two men get six, three months in jail for killing spouse, sister

From Top News:

Submitted by Mohit Joshi on Fri, 04/04/2008 – 21:54.

Amman – A Jordanian criminal court has sentenced a 30-year- old Egyptian to only six months in prison for murdering his Jordanian wife for committing adultery last year, the Jordan Times reported Friday.

The court prosecutor had charged the suspect, whose identity was withheld, with premeditated murder, but the tribunal immediately reduced the charge to a misdemeanour because the defendant committed his crime in defence of “family honour,” judicial sources said.

Another court also sentenced a 30-year-old mechanic to only three months in jail after finding him guilty of murdering his younger married sister, the paper said.

Young street musicians apprehended, fined by Ankara police

This is truly a sign of increased Islamic rule in ‘secular’ Turkey. Music, like dogs, was despised by the peace loving war monger Mohamed so as Iran passes new laws which in essence force people to destroy their dogs, Turkey appears to be moving against music in public. Dearborn’s First Amendment barbecue

Henry Payne / The Michigan View.com

By burning the First Amendment, Dearborn mayor John O’Reilly Jr. and his Wayne County cronies have managed to make nutty pastor Terry Jones a free speech hero, united the left-wing ACLU and right-wing Thomas More Law Center, stereotyped Muslims as intolerant zealots, and put Dearborn on the map as a bastion of small-town ayatollahs.

With friends like Mayor O’Reilly, who needs enemies?

O’Reilly’s outrageous action against the Quran-burning quack — resulting in a Wayne County jury’s conviction of Jones for planning a demonstration in front to the Dearborn Islamic Center on Good Friday — has made Dearborn the laughingstock of First Amendment constitutionalists everywhere.

“We were arrested for something we had not done,” said Jones, who has retained the conservative More Center in a lawsuit against the City of Dearborn.

“This should have never come to this point to begin with,” said Rana Elmir of the ACLU of Michigan. “The judge should have dismissed the case. It’s a complete abuse of the court process, and all those involved should be ashamed.”

“(District Judge Mark Somers) should have thrown this case out of court immediately,” agreed Wayne State Constitutional scholar Robert Sedler. “And (Wayne County prosecutor) Kym Worthy should know the law. People have a right to use the public street to express their views.”

Alas, Judge Somers only threw gasoline on O’Reilly’s fire by ordering Jones to stay away from the mosque for three years. Worthy defended her prosecution, claiming that “these proceedings were solely about public safety.”

Worthy, Somers and O’Reilly were surely concerned about a repeat of the deadly riots in Afghanistan that erupted after Jones barbecued a Quran last month (not to mention their election chances if they defied Dearborn’s mob). But it’s not hard to see where their paranoid policing of free speech leads.

Should Big Labor be denied the right to protest in Lansing for fear their Snyder-as-Hitler posters would lead to violence? Should Sarah Plain be denied a platform to “target Democrats for defeat” for fear of another Tucson massacre?

Indeed, the Dearborn case comes just weeks after the Westboro Baptist Church won a landmark Supreme Court case protecting right to protest outside military funerals.

Michigan Court Establishes “Blasphemy”-Free, No-Go-Zone for Islam

From Diana West

Writing  at The Corner, Nina Shea recaps the latest in the saga of Terry Jones, who has been trying to take a peaceful, non-flammable protest of sharia and jihad to the sidewalk outside the largest mosque in America in Dearborn, Michigan only to be outlawed by the Michigan District Court. Like all other envelop-pushing cases, this latest incident serves as a stress test of the rule of law in our society. And, like most other such envelop-pushing cases,  it proves that the rule of law is strong —  only the law that is strong is sharia (Islamic) law.

The Michigan District Court’s egregious ruling against Jones is all about protecting Islam from criticism, rather than about protecting criticism from Islam, which is what US jurisprudence, not to mention the American Way, demands. It is sharia that the US court is enforcing.

One particularly hideous aspect of the ruling bars Pastor Jones and his colleague Assistant Pastor Wayne Sapp from visiting the vicinity of this mosque for the next three years.

Egypt Islamists defiant over Christian governor

SARAH EL DEEB, Associated Press

CAIRO (AP) — Protesters led by hardline Islamists in southern Egypt held their ground Monday, saying they won’t end their campaign of civil disobedience until the government removes a newly appointed Coptic Christian governor.

The protesters, many from the ultraconservative Salafi trend of Islam, have been sitting on train tracks, taken over government buildings and blocked main roads in the southern city of Qena, insisting the new governor won’t properly implement Islamic law.

Attempts by the newly appointed interior minister, who hails from the same area, to defuse the crisis were rebuffed and protesters insisted their sit-in, which began Friday, would continue.

Since the Feb. 11 ousting of President Hosni Mubarak in popular protests, Islamist groups have have been flexing their muscles and are vowing to take a more active political role as Egypt is still drawing its transition to democracy. Continue Reading →

Muslim Council: women cannot debate wearing veil

From The Guardian:

H/T Dodo Can Spell (Which is more than I can do)

The body which claims to be the voice of Britain’s Muslims has told women that wearing the veil is “not open to debate”.

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said that not covering the face is a “shortcoming” and suggested that any Muslims who advocate being uncovered could be guilty of rejecting Islam

In a statement published on its website the MCB, warns: “We advise all Muslims to exercise extreme caution on this issue, since denying any part of Islam may lead to disbelief.

“Not practising something enjoined by Allah and his Messenger… is a shortcoming. Denying it is much more serious.”
The statement quotes from the Koran: “It is not for a believer, man or woman, that they should have any option in their decision when Allah and his Messenger have decreed a matter.”
The statement will add to controversy about the veil after France earlier this week banned the full-face covering.

‘Wear a headscarf or we will kill you’: How the ‘London Taliban’ is targeting women and gays in bid to impose sharia law

Women who do not wear headscarves are being threatened with violence and even death by Islamic extremists intent on imposing sharia law on parts of Britain, it was claimed today.

Other targets of the ‘Talibanesque thugs’, being investigated by police in the Tower Hamlets area of London, include homosexuals.

Stickers have been plastered on public walls stating: ‘Gay free zone. Verily Allah is severe in punishment’.

Posters for H&M which feature women in bikinis and a racy poster for a Bollywood film have been defaced.

It is believed Muslim extremists are behind a spate of attacks being investigated by police, according to the Sunday Times.

An Asian woman who works in a pharmacy in east London was told to dress more modestly and wear a veil or the shop would be boycotted.

When she went to the media to talk about the abuse she suffered, a man later entered the pharmacy and told her: ‘If you keep doing these things, we are going to kill you’.

The 31-year-old, who is not a practising Muslim, said she has since been told to take holiday by the pharmacy owners and now fears she may lose her job.

She said: ‘Why should I wear a hijab (headscarf) or burqa? I haven’t done anything wrong.’

Other incidents reported include the placing of stickers across the white-minority borough which state it is a ‘gay-free zone’ and the daubing of paint on posters for clothing shop H&M featuring women in bikinis.

Ghaffar Hussain, of the anti-extremism thin tank the Quilliam Foundation, told The Sunday Times that the intimidation was the work of ‘Talibanesque thugs’.

He added: ‘This minority think they have the right to impose their fringe interpretation of Islam on others.’

Paul Rickett from the Met Police said: ‘I am saddened that there are a small minority of people who do not wish to respect the lifestyle choices of others’.

He added that there was nothing to indicate the incidents were linked.

Three men have been charged with religiously-aggravated criminal damage in connection with some of the incidents, which have mirrored crude attempt at censorship in Birmingham.

Tower Hamlets has a reputation for being a centre of Islamic extremism in London.

Recently it was revealed Rich Dart, a middle class former BBC worker had converted to Islam and was living in Bow, east London in a £300,000 flat paid for by benefits.

Despite being unemployed, Mr Dart regularly attends Muslim rallies in which he was recently heard to say: ‘When the Taliban defeat the allies we will establish Sharia law and take the fight to the enemy.’

Before Christmas posters appeared in the borough claiming the religious festival was ‘evil’.

The campaign’s organiser was 27-year-old Abu Rumaysah, who once called for Sharia Law in Britain at a press conference held by hate preacher leader Anjem Choudary, the leader of banned militant group Islam4UK.

Mr Rumaysah said: ‘Christmas is a lie and as Muslims it is our duty to attack it.

‘But our main attack is on the fruits of Christmas, things like alcohol abuse and promiscuity that increase during Christmas and all the other evils these lead to such as abortion, domestic violence and crime.

‘We hope that out campaign will make people realise that Islam is the only way to avoid this and convert.’

Muslim Brotherhood to launch TV channel in May

The Muslim Brotherhood announced plans to launch TV channel “Egypt 25” next month to represent their proposed Freedom and Justice Party. The group also said it plans to move its headquarters from the Manial to Moqattam neighborhood of Cairo.

The Brotherhood plans to launch the channel within two weeks, at which time it will announce the budget for the station, said member Sobhi Saleh.

“We make use of media professionals and experts from within and outside our administrative offices and from within and outside Egypt,” said Saad al-Husseini, a member of the group’s guidance bureau.

Al-Husseini said the group is checking the opinions of its local councils in various governorates on its party platform, which he said would be announced after the committee responsible for drafting the platform discusses the feedback.

The Muslim Brotherhood said it is waiting for a fair trial for former President Hosni Mubarak, his family, and the officials of the former regime in retribution for the deaths of protesters. A fair trial would prevent future presidents from repeating the ‘pharaonic acts’ of the old regime and would also help Egypt recover any stolen funds, according to the group.

In a press statement, the group supported activists’ decision to suspend Friday protests this week, saying it would give authorities time to conduct investigations into corrupt officials.

The group added in its statement Thursday that people will take to the streets again if their demands are not met.

The Brotherhood also called on all classes to contribute to national production and prove that Egyptians are capable of saving their country from an economic crisis.

BNP ‘Koran burn’ candidate Sion Owens case withdrawn

BBC…The Crown Prosecution Service said it was withdrawing the case against Sion Owens

The case has been withdrawn against a BNP candidate for the Welsh assembly election who had been accused of being filmed burning a copy of the Koran.

Sion Owens, aged 41, was charged with a public order offence on Saturday.

When he appeared at Swansea Magistrates Court the Crown Prosecution Service said it was withdrawing the case against him.

In other words, burning your own private property while on your own private property can not be concidered a public order offence.

But it said that investigations would continue and that “almost certainly other proceedings will ensue.”

In other words, we will get him on something else.

Mr Owens, from Bonymaen, Swansea, appeared in court from custody.

A BNP candidate for the South Wales West regional list, he was arrested on Friday evening when the force was passed a video recording showing a man burning the Koran.

He was charged on Saturday evening under the Public Order Act.

Joanne Shannon, another BNP candidate also arrested in connection with the incident, had already been released on police bail.

A BNP spokesperson said both would still be candidates in the assembly election on 5 May.

CPS prosecutor Bryn Hurford told Mr Owens to be in “no doubt” that investigations into his actions were continuing and that “almost certainly other proceedings will ensue.”

Speaking outside the court, Mr Owens solicitor, Rachel Elimelech, said he was “pleased” and “very relieved to be released from custody”.
