Mosque gun battle rages in Gaza

BBC NEWS… At least six people have been killed and dozens injured in a fierce gun battle in Gaza, emergency services say.

Eyewitnesses say hundreds of Hamas fighters and policemen surrounded then raided a mosque where followers of a radical Islamist cleric were holed up.

They had fired rocket-propelled grenades at the mosque in Rafah, near the Egyptian border, witnesses say.

It is thought that at least 100 supporters of the al-Qaeda-linked group Warriors of God are inside.

Hamas said a grenade fired from the mosque killed one of its fighters. The other fatalities were reported to be gunmen, and a child was also killed.

Fighting pledge

Earlier, during Friday prayers, hundreds of worshippers at Ibn-Taymiyah mosque declared Gaza an “Islamic emirate”.

The mosque’s imam – Abdel-Latif Moussa – and armed supporters swore to fight to the death rather than hand over authority of the mosque to Hamas.

The Salafi Warriors of God, or Jund Ansar Allah, gained some prominence two months ago when it staged a failed attack on a border crossing between Gaza and Israel.

The group is very critical of Hamas, which governs Gaza, accusing the Islamist group of not being Islamist enough.

Hamas has cracked down on al-Qaeda-inspired groups in the past.

It is concerned they may attract more extremist members, and has forbidden anyone except what it describes as Hamas security personnel to carry weapons in Gaza.

Welcome back Khadr!!!

OTTAWA — A Federal Court of Appeal judge upheld a ruling Friday ordering the government to repatriate Canadian-born terrorism suspect Omar Khadr from the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay.

In April, Federal Court Justice James O’Reilly ordered the Harper government to seek Khadr’s repatriation, arguing the government’s ongoing refusal to do so violates his rights under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

O’Reilly ruled the Canadian government was directly involved in Khadr’s mistreatment in Guantanamo Bay by sharing information with U.S. authorities, even though Canadian officials knew Khadr was being subjected to interrogation techniques such as sleep deprivation.

The judge also found that Canada has violated international laws that protect child soldiers.

Khadr, who was born in Toronto, was 15 years old when he was picked up by the United States army in Afghanistan during a shootout with American forces in 2002. He is accused of lobbing a grenade that killed a U.S. army medic. Continue Reading →

Terrorists kidnap, torture boy to bully Iraqi policeman

Khidir and Abdul QaderFALLUJA, Iraq (CNN) — Like many young boys, Khidir loves playing with toy cars and wants to be a policeman like his father when he grows up. But it was his father’s very job that caused the tiny child to suffer the unimaginable.

Khidir was just 6 years old when he was savagely ripped away from his family, kidnapped by al Qaeda operatives in Iraq.

“They beat me with a shovel, they pulled my teeth out with pliers, they would go like this and pull it,” said Khidir, now 8, demonstrating with his hands. “And they would make me work on the farm gathering carrots.”

What followed was even more horrific, an ordeal that would last for two years in captivity. Khidir and his father spoke to CNN recently, more than half a year after his rescue by Iraqi police.

“This is where they hammered a nail into my leg and then they pulled it out,” he says, lifting up his pant leg to show a tiny wound.

He says his captors also pulled out each of his tiny fingernails, broke both his arms, and beat him repeatedly on the side of the head with a shovel. He still suffers chronic headaches. He remembers them laughing as they inflicted the pain.

“I would think about my mommy and daddy,” he replies, when asked how he managed to get through the agony.

His father, Abdul Qader, struggles for words. “When he tells me about how they would torture him, I can’t tolerate it. I start crying,” he says. “What hurts me the most is when they hammered a nail into his leg.”

The father, a police officer, was sleeping at the police station in Falluja when his son was kidnapped. It was too dangerous to go home regularly. Although Falluja was no longer controlled by insurgents, assassinations against police were common.

“I woke up to the sound of a huge explosion … and then I heard my name on the radio. I ran outside and they came to me saying your house was blown up,” he says.

“When the police patrol came back, they all started kissing and comforting me,” he continues. “I was asking, ‘What’s going on? Where is my family?’ They told me that they took my son. This was a disaster. I went mad that day, I wasn’t normal, I was hysterical.”

Khidir’s grandmother was at home with the family at the time.

“The kidnappers climbed the fence and kicked in the door,” she says.”They were screaming for Abdul Qader. I told them he’s not here. They called me a liar and said we want his son. His son was hiding behind me, clutching my clothes. I said this is not his son. They hit me on the back with a rifle and ripped him out of my arms.”

The last thing she remembers were his screams of “Granny, Granny!” Continue Reading →

Short video on use of kidnapped children as soldiers and terrorists

From Global, and The National Post:

Short piece on use of kidnapped children as suicide bombers and soldiers for Islamic terror. Really, what is it going to take before moronic western people begin to understand that Islam is not some weird form of Christianity. Islam is a psychotically violent,  mysoginistic, hateful ideology which intends, and actually may, take over the world.

Australia detains terror suspects

OzBBC…Australian police have arrested four people in the southern city of Melbourne after uncovering what they say was a plot to launch an attack.

The group was preparing a suicide attack on an army base, police said.

More than 400 officers were involved in searching 19 properties across the city before dawn on Tuesday.

The suspects are Australian nationals of Somali and Lebanese descent; one man, aged 25, has so far been charged with terrorism offences.

The man from the Glenroy district of Melbourne is due in court later, as are the others detained in the operation.

‘Sobering’

“Police believe members of a Melbourne-based group have been undertaking planning to carry out a terrorist attack in Australia and allegedly involved in hostilities in Somalia,” a police statement said.

The men’s intention was to actually go into the army barracks and to kill as many soldiers as they could before they themselves were killed,” said Tony Negus, acting chief commissioner of the Australian Federal Police.

Holsworthy Barracks on the outskirts of Sydney was one of the planned targets, according to police.

The attack would have been the most serious terrorist attack on Australian soil, he added.

“Members of the group have been actively seeking a fatwa or religious ruling to justify a terror attack on Australia,” said Mr Negus.

“The sobering element of today’s development is the reminder to all Australians that the threat of terrorism is alive and well, and this requires continued vigilance on the part of our security authorities,” said Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

The country’s security level is unchanged at medium, where it has remained since 2003.

Al-Qaeda links

The police said that the raids came after a seven-month operation involving several state and federal agencies.

Homes across several northern Melbourne suburbs were among those raided, The Australian reports.

It adds that those arrested are thought to be linked to the Somali-based al-Shabab group, which seeks to overthrow the Somali government and is believed to have links to al-Qaeda.

The BBC’s Nick Bryant, in Sydney, says reports suggest electronic surveillance was used to monitor members of the group.

Members of the Melbourne-based cell reportedly travelled to Somalia in recent months to train, The Australian reports.

European gang trained for terror

By CNN Senior International Correspondent Nic Robertson and Paul Cruickshank

al-qaeda_recruitEditor’s note: This story is based on interrogation reports that form part of the prosecution case in the forthcoming trial of six Belgian citizens charged with participation in a terrorist group. Versions of those documents were obtained by CNN from the defense attorney of one of those suspects. The statement by Bryant Vinas was compiled from an interview he gave Belgian prosecutors in March 2009 in New York, and was confirmed by U.S. prosecutors as authentic. The statement by Walid Othmani was given to French investigators, and was authenticated by Belgian prosecutors.

(CNN) — An American who says he went to fight U.S. forces in Afghanistan told interrogators that about the time he became an al Qaeda member he came across several Belgian and French militants.

Belgian counter-terrorism sources said the group traveled to Pakistan’s tribal areas at the beginning of 2008, also intent on fighting in Afghanistan.

The Europeans — four Belgians and two French citizens, all of North African descent — were recruited, Belgian police say, by Malika el Aroud and Moez Garsallaoui, a married couple who had long enjoyed a notorious reputation among European counter-terrorism services.

El Aroud’s previous husband, Abdessattar Dahmane, had assassinated Ahmed Shah Massoud, the head of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, in a suicide bombing attack ordered by Osama bin Laden two days before 9/11.

When CNN interviewed the couple in 2006, El Aroud showed how she administered a pro-al Qaeda Web forum called Minbar SOS, which included pro-al Qaeda postings and propaganda videos. Read how al Qaeda is now operating

Belgian investigators say the Web site played an important role in the radicalization of members of the French-Belgian group.

One of them was a 25-year-old Frenchman, Walid Othmani. He was arrested on his return to Europe from Pakistan and is now in French custody. Belgian prosecutors told CNN Othmani has been charged in France with participation in a criminal conspiracy with the aim of preparing a terrorist act.

“I don’t think I would have left to fight jihad without viewing these videos [on Minbar] … it made me aware that the European media were hiding things about the situation in Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan,” Othmani told French interrogators, according to Belgian legal documents obtained by CNN.

According to Belgian counter-terrorism officials, Garsallaoui, a Tunisian citizen, recruited some of those who traveled to Pakistan in person in Brussels, but relied on the Internet to recruit others. Continue Reading →

Al-Qaeda: ‘We Hit Israel From Lebanon, Again’

(IsraelNN.com) h/t gov An al-Qaeda branch apparently active in Lebanon claims to have launched attacks on Israel. The group mocks the Iran-backed Hizbullah terrorist organization and calls for a unified front against Israel and the United Nations under the command of Osama Bin-Laden.

The call to jihad was issued in a video recording released this past week by al-Qaeda of al-Sham, a region known as
These actions, the video claims, were carried out under the direct command of Bin-Laden.
“Greater Syria” encompassing Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and parts of Jordan, Iraq and Turkey. The brief video, titled “Penetrating the Fortresses”, includes statements by al-Qaeda senior leaders such as Osama Bin-Laden, Abu Omar al-Baghdadi and Ayman al-Zawahiri relating to the jihadist front with Israel. The jihadists, they say, will not sit quietly and will even crawl to get to the front and “free Palestine”.

As an example, the video explains and visually demonstrates how a cell from al-Qaeda of al-Sham (AQASH) supposedly bypassed the Lebanese Army, Hizbullah and UNIFIL forces, launched missiles towards Israel, and then retreated undetected. These actions, the video claims, were carried out under the direct command of Bin-Laden, and it calls for more such attacks against the Jewish State.

The AQASH video claim of responsibility for a rocket attack apparently refers to a January 8, 2009 barrage from southern Lebanon that hit the Israeli city of Nahariya. Three Katyusha rockets injured two people and caused significant property damage. At the time, Hizbullah denied involvement in the incident.

The al-Qaeda cell claims to have perpetrated or having tried to perpetrate additional attacks on Israel, as well. “Some were launched and some were foiled,” the video said flatly.

AQASH calls for the Fatah al-Islam jihadist group, which was once a Syrian front group, and other Islamist organizations in Lebanon to join them in their effforts: “Al-Qaeda is already active in [Lebanon and elsewhere in Greater Syria] and the father-leader, Bin-Laden, must be obeyed.”

Regarding Lebanon, AQASH calls for the cancellation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Second Lebanon War, because it “is only for the benefit of the Israelis.” The video further criticizes Hizbullah chief Hassan Nasrallah, who “decried the actions of the jihadists who fired the Katyushas towards Israel as collaborators of the Israelis”, even though during the last Israeli operation in Gaza, “he did nothing and even agreed that the Crusader forces (UNIFIL) can base themselves in southern Lebanon.” The AQASH voiceover taunts Nasrallah, “So now who are the collaborators?”

The Lebanon-based al-Qaeda branch declared that “Hizbullah is using the Palestinian cause to fulfill Iran’s orders.”

‘Al-Qaeda Will Try to Assert Itself’
Security analysts with the Institute of Terrorism Research and Response (ITRR) expect increased terror activity aimed at Western interests inside Lebanon as the “Greater Syria” al-Qaeda affiliate asserts itself.

“Aside from the named United Nations troops in southern Lebanon, Lebanese government and Western organizations and NGOs are likely to be targeted, as are hotels used by Westerners” the ITRR sources said.

Apparently intended as part of this trend, a large al-Qaeda cell was alleged by Lebanese authorities to have been plotting attacks against UN troops in Southern Lebanon. On July 22, the Lebanese army said it arrested ten people involved in the plot.
Shalev blamed Lebanon for failing to halt the delivery of Iranian weapons.

Collusion Between Hizbullah and Lebanese Authorities
While an al-Qaeda-affiliated threat to Israel appears to be forming in southern Lebanon, Hizbullah logistical and material supply chains are receiving silent acceptance by the Lebanese authorities.

The latter claim was part of a speech delivered to the United Nations Security Council on Monday by Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gabriella Shalev. The explosion that took place in a village in southern Lebanon two weeks ago, which revealed a Hizbullah cache under the noses of UNIFIL, was symptomatic of “a dangerous phenomenon that Israel has been warning about for years.”

Shalev blamed Lebanon for failing to halt the delivery of Iranian weapons into the hands of Hizbullah. The Lebanese-Syrian border is porous, she explained, which entailed a breach of UN resolutions on rearming Hizbullah. The behavior of Hizbullah in southern Lebanon, she said, is an example of “the danger posed to our region by Iran.”

Stratfor: Red Alert, double hotel bombing in Indonesia

At least two improvised explosive devices detonated in the Mega Kuningan business district of Jakarta, Indonesia, early on July 17, near the Ritz-Carlton and Marriott hotels, with one report describing extensive damage to the front facade of the Ritz. Several foreign embassies are reportedly also located in the area. Local reports describe witnesses observing white smoke coming from several structures, while other buildings were being evacuated.

Further details are sketchy at this point. It is unclear exactly where the devices were placed or how large they were, though some photos of the Ritz show damage that would be consistent with a small device being detonated inside. Early casualty reports described four people killed, though if the damage to the Ritz-Carlton is as extensive as described, the casualty count will likely rise. STRATFOR will continue to update its reporting of the situation as details become available.   indonesia (FOX News just updated, nine dead and over fifty injured) Video from BBC UK

update: A car bomb exploded near a shopping complex in the Muara Angke area of Jakarta, Indonesia, two hours after the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels were attacked, Agence France-Presse reported July 17, citing Indonesian police.

Gitmo detainees proud of 9/11 attacks, documents say

From The Star Phoenix:

WASHINGTON – Five men held in Guantanamo on charges of plotting the Sept. 11 attacks declared in a court document released Tuesday that they sought to kill and terrorize Americans as an offering to God.
The charges filed against them by U.S. authorities were “not accusations,” the five detainees wrote in the document filed with the U.S. military commission.
“To us they are badges of honor, which we carry with pride,” the detainees wrote, adding: “We are terrorists to the bone. So many thanks to God.”

The detaineees, including alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, have previously said in court proceedings they planned the attacks and wanted to plead guilty to charges of war crimes.

01Khalid_468x539

In court appearances and in statements to U.S. authorities, Mohammed has expressed pride in portraying himself as the architect of the attacks on New York and Washington that killed nearly 3,000 people.
But the document filed with military authorities was the most detailed response yet by the five detainees.
The detainees said their actions were the fulfillment of the Islamic faith and said the United States had no right to accuse others over targeting civilians.
“Therefore, killing you and fighting you, destroying you and terrorizing you, responding back to your attacks, are all considered to be great legitimate duty in our religion.
“These actions are our offerings to God,” the document said.
The Defense Department said the accused seemed to trying to gain media attention. “It appears to be merely another attempt by these detainees to garner publicity,” Commander Jeffrey Gordon said.
Lawyers for two of the detainees had sought to delay the release of the document, Gordon said.
Military judges on Jan. 21 suspended the trials of the five alleged September 11 co-conspirators.President Barack Obama plans to shut down by early 2010 the “war on terror” detention camp in Cuba set up by his predecessor, while officials are reviewing cases that might be tried in regular U.S. courts.

China pleads for understanding as al-Qaeda vows revenge over Uighur deaths

A mob of Han Chinese: China begins the hunt for rioters

The local government in Xinjiang has already said it will apply the death penalty to the instigators of the clashes between local Uighur Muslims and Han Chinese Photo: EPA.
Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb (AQIM) said it would target the 50,000 Chinese workers in Algeria and elsewhere in Northern Africa.
Two extremist web sites affiliated with al-Qaeda also made threats against the large numbers of Chinese people working in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.

“Chop off their heads at their workplaces or in their homes to tell them that the time of enslaving Muslims has gone,” read one posting.
It is the first time that any al-Qaeda group has threatened China or its interests and illustrates the high price that Beijing may pay for the riots in Urumqi, in which at least 136 Han Chinese and 46 Uighurs died last week.
Beijing’s nervousness over its vast interests in Africa and the Middle East was underlined by the Foreign ministry, which rushed to reassure Muslims that China was not oppressing the Uighurs in the desert province of Xinjiang.
“We hope that our Muslim brothers can realise the truth of the July 5 incident in Urumqi. Once they know the truth, they would support our ethnic and religious policies and the measures the Chinese government has taken to deal with the incident,” said a spokesman.
The Foreign ministry was also quick to deny a charge of genocide against the Uighurs that has been levelled by Turkey, which, together with Iran, has emerged as one of Beijing’s sternest critics over the events of the past week.

“In which country could this be called genocide?” said a spokesman. “In 1949, the population of Uighurs in Xinjiang was 3.29 million, at present the Uighur population there is nearly 10 million, or three times more than 60 years ago. What kind of ethnic genocide is this?” he said.
Justin Crump, the head of terrorism analysis at Stirling Assynt, a London-based risk analysis group, said his company had come across threats from AQIM in the course of its normal monitoring.
“China has been able to operate with impunity in Afghanistan and Pakistan. al-Qaeda and the Taliban have left Chinese well alone,” he said.
But a report from his firm said: “There is an increased amount of ‘chatter’ on the internet among active Jihadists, who claim they want to see action to avenge the perceived injustices in Xinjiang.
“Some of these individuals have been actively seeking information on China’s interests in the Muslim world which they could use for targeting purposes,”
Three weeks ago, AQIM ambushed an Algerian security team protecting a Chinese construction project and killed 24 guards. Continue Reading →
