Law for Afghan Shi’ites cheap politics, say critics

 crying_girlA new law passed by the Afghan parliament that reportedly legalizes marital rape, among other measures, is just an attempt by President Hamid Karzai to win the favour of extremists, say critics.

 

Journalist and women’s-rights activist Sally Armstrong, who has reported extensively on the state of women in Afghanistan, says the law is simply an attempt by Karzai to win the critical swing votes of conservative Shia men ahead of presidential elections.

“It’s a cheap piece of electioneering on the backs of the women and girls of the country, just so he can hang on to power,” Armstrong told Canada AM. “This is a man who has spoken about the rights of women… but he sold them out to get the extremist men vote.”

Armstrong points out that even though only a small percentage of Shia men would welcome the law, all women would be affected.

“They’re selling this as just for Shia women, but that’s nonsense. The content of Shia law is, it will affect every woman in the country,” she said. Continue Reading →

Obama’s Muslim Outreach

One year ago I wrote about Obama’s Muslim connection. No matter how strong this connection was, the main stream media and ultimately Jewish Americans ignored it.

“The person who made me proudest of all,” Obama wrote, “was Roy. Actually, now we call him Abongo, his Luo name, for two years ago he decided to reassert his African heritage. He converted to Islam, and has sworn off pork and tobacco and alcohol.”

On February 27th, Barack Hussein Obama said the Muslim call to prayer is “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth.”

Although Obama played the Christian card while campaigning, he is playing the Muslim card now in such a blatant fashion that even I am astounded.

Here is his record to date after inauguration,

  • Obama’s first call was to Mahmoud Abbas who is not even a head of state. Obama was delivering a message to Israel and the world.
  • Obama’s first interview, within days of inauguration, was with the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya Networks In it her stressed his own Muslim ties and his hopes for a Palestinian state. His message was “U.S. not your enemy”

Galloway and supporters are hypocrites

As the nation’s media waited with bated breath, a federal court judge ruled Monday that controversial British MP George Galloway would not be coming into Canada.

However, in a somewhat-less-ridiculous world, whether some blowhard Brit addressed a few dozen radical antiwar types would matter not a whit.

Indeed, visits to Canada by Galloway in 2005 and 2006 warranted scant attention, and a speech just last week in New York drew only about 100 people –including the Canadian reporters who were there because of this controversy.

At least according to this judge, Ottawa’s decision to deny Galloway entry into Canada was legally correct, but it was also a needless decision and, frankly, the wrong one.

This is more about the rights of those Canadians who invited him here to speak: freedom of speech obviously entails the freedom to hear.

Justice Luc Martineau was right to say that “non-citizens do not have an unqualified right to enter . . . Canada,”– but Galloway is no “threat” beyond the queasiness one might feel after listening to him. Although Galloway’s defenders are in the right here, their sudden zeal for freedom of speech seems to me to be very sudden indeed.

In fact, many of Galloway’s supporters–including his biggest fan (himself) –ought to avoid the words “free speech” altogether, be-cause we can easily see how spectacularly uncommitted they are to the very notion. Continue Reading →

Islamic Law’s Influence in America a Growing Concern

As America’s Muslim population grows, so too does the influence of Islamic law, or Shariah, in daily life in the U.S.

“Shariah Law is the totality of the Muslim’s obligation,” said Abdullahi An-Na’im, a professor of law at Emory University in Atlanta. According to An-Na’im, Shariah is similar to Jewish Talmudic Law or Catholic Canon Law in that it guides an adherent’s moral conduct.

“As a citizen, I am a subject of the United States,” An-Na’im said. “I owe allegiance to the United States, to the Constitution of the United States. That is not inconsistent with observing a religious code in terms of my own personal behavior.”

While many view this as a testament to the “great American melting pot,” others see Islamic law’s growing influence as a threat. Shariah’s critics point to cases such as the airport in Minneapolis, where some Shariah-adherent taxi drivers made headlines in 2006 for refusing to pick up passengers they suspected of carrying liquor. The drivers’ aversion to alcohol stemmed from a verse in the Qur’an that describes “intoxicants and gambling” as “an abomination of Satan’s handiwork.” Continue Reading →

Hardline Prince moves closer to Saudi Arabia’s throne

Prince Nayef bin Abdul-Aziz, the interior minister and a half-brother of King Abdullah, has assumed second place in the line of succession. His appointment as second deputy prime minister places him next in line after Crown Prince Sultan.

Because King Abdullah is about 84 and the Crown Prince is of the same vintage and in poor health, this makes Prince Nayef highly likely to succeed to the throne. He will take temporary charge of Saudi Arabia while the King attends the G20 summit in London and Crown Prince Sultan recovers from surgery in New York.

Prince Nayef, who at 75 is a relatively youthful member of the royal family’s senior circle, is a deeply controversial figure. Shortly after the terrorist attacks on September 11, he was sceptical about the involvement of any Saudis and publicly suggested that “Zionists” were responsible. Hamas wins teachers union elections for UN schools in Gaza

Hamas supporters scored a victory in elections for the school teachers’ union of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) that were held in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.

However, the rival PLO list won a majority of votes for two other UNRWA workers groups: the employees’ and the services’ unions. This means that the PLO list has enough votes to form the next Executive Council of the General Workers’ Union. The results showed that Hamas won all 11 seats of the teachers’ union.

The Hamas victory means that Hamas supporters will continue to control UNRWA-run schools and other academic institutions throughout the Gaza Strip. Hamas has controlled the UNRWA teachers’ union for the past 16 years.

Some 10,100 UNRWA workers participated in the election, with the turnout being estimated at more than 97 percent. The voting was conducted at UNRWA’s main headquarters in the Gaza Strip.

The PLO list that ran in the election consisted of Fatah, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the People’s (Communist) Party. The PLO list won five out of seven seats of the employees’ union and five out of nine in the services’ union.

The services’ union will have three PLO representatives on the Executive Council, while the employees’ union will have only two.

A Hamas official in the Gaza Strip expressed satisfaction with the results, saying they were an indication of the “enormous support” that Hamas continues to enjoy.

Deli Jihad.

So what conclusions can one draw from the recent arrest of a woman in Guelph for putting sewing needles in packages of lunch meat at a local store. First we should look at the names of those involved. Schneiders is a name of German origin but also the surname of many Jews. Even more common in it’s other variant Schneiderman. Now lets look at the name of the arrested. Mastoora is a name of Muslim origin. This connection will not be brought up by the media and they will pass it off as a disgruntled ex employee [ Mastoora had recently been fired after seven years of employment with Maple Leaf foods] who was seeking revenge on a former employer. Perhaps that is all this is about. Then again, perhaps not.

This dangerous act seems to run along the same lines as the attacks we see on Starbucks. Whether Starbucks or Schneiders is owned by Jews or not is irrelevant. If the Muslim community perceives this to be true then they are soft targets for jihad and shall be attacked accordingly.

Guelph police make arrest in meat tampering case

Guelph, Ont. police have made an arrest in connection with a series of deli packages that were recently found with sewing needles inside them at a local No Frills supermarket.

Late Thursday, Guelph police announced they had made an arrest in connection with the case.

Store management called police after a No Frills customer brought a package that had been tampered with back to the supermarket last week.

The subsequent investigation found 13 sewing needles that had been inserted into 12 different Schneider’s meat product packages sold at the No Frills supermarket located at 191 Silvercreek Parkway in Guelph.

The store immediately pulled Schneider’s products from its shelves and police investigated the matter with the help of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Sgt. Doug Pflug told ctvtoronto.ca that all of the affected products had been yanked from store shelves within a 25 kilometre radius of the No Frills during the investigation.

No injuries were reported as a result of the tampering.

Mastoora Qezil, 41, of Guelph, was arrested and charged with one count of common nuisance. She is scheduled to appear in bail court on Friday.

I can only imagine the speech Taliban leaders gave their minions as they explained to them the peace deal they had agreed to with Pakistan. I suspect it was something like, ” We have told the Pakistan government [spit] we will stop jihad on them. So when you are killing them don’t say you are Taliban.” Followed by rubbing of palms and evil laughter.

At least 48 dead in Pakistan mosque bombing

LANDI KOTAL, Pakistan (Reuters) – A suicide bomber blew himself up in a crowded Pakistani mosque during prayers on Friday, killing at least 48 people, a government official said.

“So far we have counted 48 bodies,” Tariq Hayat Khan, the top administrator in the Khyber region in the northwest of the country, told reporters.The death toll could rise, perhaps to 70, he said. About 70 wounded had been taken to hospitals, he said.”It was a suicide attack. The bomber was standing in the mosque. It’s a two-storey building and it has collapsed,” he said.

Police initially said a bomb blew up at a police post next to the mosque near Jamrud town.

 There was no claim of responsibility but Islamist militants opposed to the government’s support for the United States have mounted a violent campaign against the security forces and others.

Militants had earlier threatened to blow up the police post next to the mosque, residents of the area said.

US claims Gulf donors fund Taliban fighters

The US has told its Nato partners that funds from individuals in Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia now rival drug money as a source of financing for Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan.

The US launched a high-profile push to reduce Gulf funding for the Taliban, al-Qaeda and other militant groups operating out of Afghanistan in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks in 2001. As a result, in recent years insurgent links to Afghanistan’s burgeoning heroin trade have become the principal focus.

But Richard Holbrooke, US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, expressed fresh concerns to Nato ambassadors during a briefing this week on the US’s strategic review of Afghan-Pakistan policy, which is expected to be announced on Friday.

“He said that the prime source of funding for the Taliban is not from narcotics but from private individuals in the Gulf region,” said a western diplomat, without giving further details.

Another official attending the meeting said Mr Holbrooke had suggested that much of the funding from poppy production appeared to go to individuals linked in some way to the Afghan government.

“There is real concern about funding for extremists in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region coming from the Gulf, which we understand rivals or exceeds the money they are getting from drugs,” said another diplomat, quoting estimates of $150m-$300m for insurgents’ drugs cash. Continue Reading →

Canadian Arab Federation taking Jason Kenney to court

It’s well known that the president of the Canadian Arab Federation recently called Jason Kenney, the Minister of Immigration, a “professional whore” for supporting Israel and criticizing the presence of Hamas and Hezbollah flags at a recent protest, prompting Mr. Kenney to say he would review the CAF’s federal funding.

But it is less well known that Mr. Mouammar spent the 11 years prior to February, 2005, sitting as a member of the Immigration and Refugee Board, deciding whether refugee claimants from such North African countries as Morocco, Egypt, Algeria and Somalia should be allowed to stay in Canada. It might not be a bad idea to dust off some of those old files and see who did get into the country while Mr. Mouammar worked at the IRB.

OTTAWA — The Canadian Arab Federation is taking Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney to court over his decision to stop funding the group’s language training programs.Kenney had threatened to pull $2 million in federal cash after the federation’s president Khaled Mouammar called him “a professional whore” for his support for Israel.On March 18, the federation was told by an associate deputy minister at Citizenship and Immigration that funding for its Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada program (LINC) would not be renewed, according to court documents filed Wednesday in Federal Court in Toronto.The Toronto-based group was told “its funding for the LINC program would not be renewed because of objectionable nature of public statements made by CAF members,” according to the application.The decision erred in law by breaching an agreement to fund the LINC program and also breached the principle of fairness, the application alleges.
 The federation is asking for an order quashing the decision and has also applied for an injunction to keep the funding coming while the case is heard.The minister has yet to file a response to the application. None of the allegations have been proved in court.
 The federation is represented by Toronto lawyers Barbara Jackman and Hadayt Nazami, who are also acting for controversial British MP George Galloway in his litigation against the federal government over a decision to need him inadmissible to Canada. Kenney is named as a respondent in that case, too.

 MOGADISHU: An Islamic court in southern Somalia on Tuesday sentenced a man found guilty of murdering a UN aid worker to paying the victim’s family 100 female camels in compensation. The defendant, a member of an armed organization, pleaded guilty to the murder of senior World Food Program official Ibrahim Hussein Duale. “After a five-day trial, the court finally announced its verdict today … He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to pay 100 female camels,” a relative of the victim, told AFP. The trial took place in the town of Bardhubo, in the Gedo region, which is under the control of the hardline Islamist group Al-Shabaab and its allies.
The Islamist administration in the area has opened courts applying a version of Sharia, or Islamic law, over the past year. In the UN aid worker’s murder case, the judges deliberated and gave the victim’s family the option to choose the death penalty for the accused or receive compensation. Abdullahi Hussein, a local elder who was part of a committee involved in the case and suggesting an adequate sentence, said the 100 female camels were worth around $45,000. “Each she-camel is worth 10 million Somalia shillings, so 100 of them works out at around $45,000,” he said. – AFP

‘Iran-Sudan-Hamas chain exposed’

Hello Iran..I would like to place an orderThe latest reports  of an alleged IAF strike on a Hamas arms convoy in Sudan draw attention to an arms network running from Iran, via the Persian Gulf and Yemen to Sudan, Egypt, and Hamas-ruled Gaza. The existence of this network has been noted by analysts in the past. It forms part of a larger, overt, close relationship maintained by both Iran and Hamas with the regime of Omar al-Bashir in Khartoum.

Reva Bhalla, an analyst at the US-based private intelligence company Stratfor, was the first to publicly note the transfer of arms from Iran to Hamas via Sudan. Speaking to reporters in early January, Bhalla suggested the involvement of Hizbullah agents in an Iranian created network bringing arms from Sudan to the Gaza Strip. Bhalla depicted the network in the following terms:

“You’ll have a bunch of Hizbullah agents who will procure arms through Sudan. They’ll enter Egypt under forged documents, pay off disgruntled Bedouins in the Sinai with things like light arms, cash, Lebanese hashish – which they can sell in the black market – and pay off Egyptian security guards as well so that they can travel covertly into Gaza to pass off the weapons shipments through Hamas’ pretty extensive underground tunnel network.”

It is impossible to verify the precise accuracy of these details. However, the involvement of Sudan in the Iranian-Hamas war effort would fit with the larger pattern of Sudan’s regional alliances and activity. ‘Threat Of Britons Trained By Al Qaeda’

Pakistan has monitored more than 20 Britons believed to have spent time with radical militant groups and then returned to the UK, Sky News has learned.

The tracked men are said to have trained with extremist outfits linked to al Qaeda and the Taliban and are thought to pose a potential threat to British security.

The dossier of names is expected to be handed over to British anti-terrorist teams soon and is being seen as a big leap forward in the sharing of intelligence between the two countries.

But British authorities may wonder why the names were not handed over before the suspects re-entered the UK.

The details have been compiled by Pakistan’s intelligence service – the ISI – and follow the Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s declaration that three-quarters of all serious terror plots in Britain have their roots in Pakistan.

The suspects are aged between 17 and 23 and have apparently created “sufficient suspicion” with their activities for the ISI to believe they pose a “potential danger” to Britain. Continue Reading →

U.S Strikes in Pakistan “justify jihad”: cleric

QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) – An expansion of America’s secret war in Pakistan to Baluchistan province would justify jihad and see many more young men rally to fight foreign forces in Afghanistan, a radical cleric said.

 The New York Times reported last week that the United States is considering expanding its covert war to Baluchistan, a sprawling province of deserts and jagged mountains on the border of violence-plagued southern Afghanistan.

 So far, missile strikes by pilotless Central Intelligence Agency-operated drones, which Pakistan objects to, have been limited to ethnic Pashtun tribal areas to the north of Baluchistan, mostly in the North and South Waziristan regions.

 “America is trying to scare us but it won’t work. Rather it will be a justification,” Noor Muhammad, a well-known radical cleric who runs a madrasa, or religious school, in Quetta, capital of Baluchistan province, said of possible U.S. strikes.

 “America is foolish because it will only force more people here to stand up against it,” he said.

 Sitting in a room his madrasa complex, the 60-year-old grey-bearded Muhammad denied any policy of sending young men from his school to fight Western forces in Afghanistan.

 But he said it was the duty of every Muslim to do that.

 “If infidels occupy a Muslim land then it’s obligatory for all Muslims to do jihad … Preaching jihad is my duty,” he said.

 President Barack Obama has said the United States is not winning in Afghanistan, more than seven years after U.S.-led forces toppled the Taliban, and he is due to announce the result of a review of policy in Afghanistan and Pakistan in coming days.

 U.S. officials say success in Afghanistan is impossible without tackling the problem of militant safe havens in Pakistan.

 In the Pashtunabad area on the outskirts of Quetta, support for militancy appears strong. Walls on a street leading to Muhammad’s madrasa are daubed with slogans such as “Long Live Mullah Omar.”

 Afghan and foreign officials in Kabul have long said they believe Taliban leaders, including supreme leader Mullah Omar, are hiding in Baluchistan. Pakistan denies that. Continue Reading →
