CAIR-CAN board member seeks to pillory Tarek Fatah

Tarek Fatah, a well known Canadian Muslim and one who writes frequently to many Canadian newspapers on the dangers and issues of more conservative or orthodox Islam has found himself the target of what may be a smear campaign against him by a member both of the Canadian legal community as well as a former CAIRCAN associate. CAIR of course in the US recently was outed as a terrorist sympathetic group and probably more than mere sympathy as the FBI has now officially and publicly cut all ties with them and one can only wonder if the Canadian branch, CAIRCAN is similar in agenda.

Faisal Kutty, LL.B., LL.M. KSM Law, also was a central figure in attempting to have sharia law adopted in Ontario for civil and family matters has asked his network to start a campaign against Tarek speaking to DFAIT and accusing him of hatred to Muslims.

Below, please see a screen capture from a yahoo group where Mr. Kutty’s email was posted. I offer a link here but as it will likely be removed soon, it seems a good idea to use the screen capture as well.

Text reads:

Salams,
He is now speaking to DFAIT as an expert….We can’t simply continue to ignore his opportunism, hate and targetting of Muslims…people should write to DFAIT expressing that he is entitled to his views but his credibility, agenda and qualification to speak on this topic should be challenged or at least balanced by qualified academics and experts…

On the surface its pretty harmless. But Tarek is not anti Muslim. He IS a Muslim. He merely isn’t a jihadi nor does he advocate any form of extremism. To one who wishes to implement sharia in Canada he would likely be seen as an apostate. It’s also noteworthy that Mr. Kutty is a former Vice-Chair of CAIR-CAN, and seems to hold a position at York University Law school as this link in the above email indicates.
Was Mr. Kutty speaking on behalf of York Law school when he asked for a writing campaign against Tarak Fatah? If so, this would be a serious matter for the faculty of Osgoode Law school I would hope and a more serious one if it was not.
Mr. Kutty also is a founding member of the Canadian Muslim Civil Liberties Association which made joint representations at the recent Iacobucci Internal Inquiry, with CAIR-CAN and CAF. Readers of Vlad may remember the CAF (Canadian Arab Legue) as the people who recently called Canadian MP Jason Kenney a ‘professional whore”.
Both CAF and CAIRCAN have pretty clear implications as Islamists with an ‘unCanadian’ Agenda and not people I would want to be along side with, while fighting a court case  against the Canadian government on matters of who may or may not be admitted to Canada or how suspects in terrorism may be treated.

As Commissioner of the Inquiry, Mr. Iacobucci’s mandate will be to determine:

  1. whether the detention of Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati and Muayyed Nureddin in Syria or Egypt resulted, directly or indirectly, from actions of Canadian officials, particularly in relation to the sharing of information with foreign countries and, if so, whether those actions were deficient in the circumstances,
  2. whether there were deficiencies in the actions taken by Canadian officials to provide consular services to Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati and Muayyed Nureddin while they were detained in Syria or Egypt, and
  3. whether any mistreatment of Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati and Muayyed Nureddin in Syria or Egypt resulted, directly or indirectly, from actions of Canadian officials, particularly in relation to the sharing of information with foreign countries and, if so, whether those actions were deficient in the circumstances;

This Inquiry is expected to deal with sensitive national security matters. While public hearings are possible, it is likely the Inquiry will be carried out largely in private.

The report resulting from this Inquiry is now to be submitted on or before October 20, 2008.

widow sentenced to 40 lashes for accepting bread

Khamisa Sawadi, a 75 year old widow living in Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to 40 lashes and four months imprisonment for ‘mingling’ with two young men who are not relatives. She had asked them to deliver to her home five loaves of bread. After delivering the baked goods her nephew and his business partner were arrested by the religious police and were also sentenced to lashes and jail time.

This is sharia law in progress.

Meanwhile, there has been virtual silence from Canadian human rights activists and feminist organizations. Judy Rebbick, queen of Canadian gender equality is too busy writing  foolish claims that Israel Aparthied Week in Canada is not an anti-Semitic hate fest to be bothered by the fact that whabbists would cart a senior to a post and lash her, I would suspect, to death.

She is a widow. She is 75. She asked for bread. I invite the lefties, namely the feminist organizations and the NDP (who would have the Alberta oil sands shut down so we could pump more money to our Saudi friends) and any moderate Muslim organizations in Canada to openly denounce these actions. Hmmmm. I’m still waiting for the denouncements for the brutal murder of Daniel Pearl, and the slaughter of school children in Beslan. For those who want to continue chattering on of the qualities of cultural relativism, go ahead. For those who are prepared to stand up to sharia, please contact the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Ottawa or the nearest whabbist centre near you.

Links for March 10. Women and Islam.

I post this small series of links, the ones that made it into the media and the ones that made it from the media to me. Links that more or less are all from the last 24 hours. I post these links to illustrate a point. You think you know what that point is. That Islam is evil. No, I figure anyone who doesn’t know that yet probably never will. The point is, that so many do not seem to understand difference between the exception and the rule.

When barbarity is committed against women. Against homosexuals or against Jews and infidels. When seemingly arbitrary acts of cruelty and personal vengeance are committed and later justified by sharia, this is the rule. The exception is when it does not unless proper submission is shown to male and Islamic and often Arab supremacy and often not even then. All to often Islam is the motive. But even more often, Islam is the excuse.

Muslim Woman Self Immolates Rather Than Continue Desperate Life

53 year old Afghan widow, Jan Bibi, chose to pour gasoline over her body and light herself on fire rather than continue her desperate life. As an aging muslim woman – with no husband – she was on the bottom rung of Afghan life and considered a pariah of society.  She had little chance of finding work due to her gender and even less chance of finding a new husband due to her age. So a painful, skin blistering-flesh charring death by fire seemed the only solution to her desolate situation.

Saudis order 40 lashes for elderly woman for mingling

(CNN) — A Saudi Arabian court has sentenced a 75-year-old Syrian woman to 40 lashes, four months imprisonment and deportation from the kingdom for having two unrelated men in her house, according to local media reports.

According to the Saudi daily newspaper Al-Watan, troubles for the woman, Khamisa Mohammed Sawadi, began last year when a member of the religious police entered her house in the city of Al-Chamli and found her with two unrelated men, “Fahd” and “Hadian.”
Fahd told the policeman he had the right to be there, because Sawadi had breast-fed him as a baby and was therefore considered to be a son to her in Islam, according to Al-Watan.

Kabul, 9 March (AKI) – Afghanistan’s Supreme Court has upheld a 20-year jail term for blasphemy handed to Afghan journalist Sayed Parwez Kambakhsh, who claimed men and women were equal.

Kambakhsh’s brother said the family had just learned of the closed-door ruling delivered a month ago in the absence of Yaqub Kambakhsh, his lawyer or family members, the Information Safety and Freedom media watchdog reported on Monday.

A Day in the Life of a Saudi Woman. Front Page Magazine:

In 2006, Australian Mufti Taj al-Din al-Hilali raised a furor by calling unveiled women “uncovered meat” to suggest that eighteen such women, raped by Muslim youths in a Sydney neighborhood in 2000, actually invited the horrendous act upon themselves. Most Australians and Westerners have viewed it as utterance of a deranged ignorant cleric, not representing the Islamic creed and community. However, an investigation of the treatment of women in Saudi Arabia—the heartland and birth-place of Islam—reveals a strong Islamic rationale behind the Mufti’s assertion. Continue Reading →

Democracy in Afghanistan

The idea that democracy is a foreign ideal perpetrated on the people of Afghanistan by outsiders is a misconception writes Khorshied Samad in the March 7 edition of the Ottawa Citizen. On the eve of International Women’s day, the wife to the Afghanistan ambassador to Canada and former correspondent and Kabul bureau chief for Fox news is clear in her assessment on democracy in the war torn and much troubled country: “while Afghans remain critical of some aspects of the NATO mission over the past eight years, they believe in further developing democratic values and structures as a safeguard against extremism and injustice that are considered universal threats”.

Samad continues to write: ” the misconception that democracy is alien to Afghanistan’s society is wrong. Afghan women fought for and achieved certain important rights prior to the Taliban”. In fact, the 1964 Afghan constitution recognized men and women as equal citizens under the law with equal rights and women were active in all professional fields until the Taliban takeover. Now, ” the volatile security situation and certain archaic norms continue to put pressure on women and limit women’s and girl’s roles in public life, denying them the full enjoyment of their rights. Human right’s violations including domestic violence, rape, child marriage and honour killings are still reported”.

” Increasing U.S. military forces and reinforcing NATO coalition troops are a necessary strategy, especially during an election year, in overcoming the Taliban and al-Qaeda insurgency plaguing Southeastern Afghanistan”. Samad believes that military action is not the sole solution to Afghan’s reformation. To ensure that Afghanistan does not fall into failed state status, focused nation-building and reconstruction which would allow for the seeds of democratic values to flourish must  be implemented by outside efforts. ” This is necessary to ensure that a healthy civil society can grow and develop, protecting such ideals as freedom of speech and equal rights for all citizens, which are upheld in the 2004 Afghan constitution. Afghans do not want to abandon these accomplishments”.

What is there to dispute? How can there be opposition to the will, testament and hope of the ordinary Afghani?

We are told time and again that culture is relative and that we have to allow for this relativity; to understand the actions of these cultures within the context of the modern world. That is fine, insofar as we can strive to make those allowances. But by the same token, we surely cannot see this culture effectively understanding or applying the necessary responsibilities required to establish a true democracy in the modern sense, Taliban or not.  The overall illiteracy rate is astonishing despite apparent strides in eduation. Afghanistan guarantees women equal rights and a quarter of the parliamentary and provincial council seats yet few candidates are women. Girls are forced into hiding for seeking an open education and their teachers either beaten or killed. Does Khorshied Samad consider the abundant failings of an ancient culture incapable in it’s ability to realize the obligations and responsibilities that democracy demands a fruitful stride? Is there any recognition of the loss of troops in aiding this seemingly endless transition? What role does the Afghan government play in the perpetual dysfunction of a nation constantly on the brink of collapse and it’s failure to acknowledge women as full persons?

Today Canada realized it’s 112th troop lost. A good friend of mine stated that if we don’t go into Afghanistan to win, then one soldier’s life lost is one too many; if we go to win, then 10,000 lost is very few.

“As we celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, we are reminded that Afghanistan still has much work ahead. Hopefully with the continued support of the international community its young, fragile democracy will flourish so the Afghan people can become truly self-sufficient, live in peace and security and with hope for the future” Samad writes and I couldn’t agree more. We can hope that this fragile democracy finds it’s surest footing and lasting promise first and foremost from the Afghani people themselves supported not by outside forces but by it’s own government committed to a future of stability, equality and peace.

PESHAWAR: Terrified, locked up at home and courting death if they go out alone, women oppressed by extremists in Swat have nothing to celebrate on International Women’s Day.

Nearly 100 years after the annual day was created to mark the struggle for equal rights for half the world’s population, most women in Swat look blank and go silent when asked about gender rights and discrimination.

They’re too frightened to speak in public. They can only leave the confines of their homes accompanied by a male relative, their bodies hidden in veils.

‘How can I tell you my name, are you crazy? I was told not to give my name to anyone because the Taliban could hurt me,’ one girl in the ninth grade told AFP by telephone from the former ski resort.

The girl’s dreams of becoming a doctor are over. She worries the Taliban will stop her finishing school, regardless of her parents’ support.

‘My mother told me I can do anything, but my inner soul is shattered.’

‘Tell me if you stop women getting an education where will a sick woman go? Do you want her to go to a male doctor? I was told that education is compulsory for every man and woman in Islam but the Taliban destroyed our schools.’

Militants have destroyed 191 schools in the valley, 122 of them for girls, leaving 62,000 pupils with nowhere to study, local officials say.

Huma Batool – not her real name – is a 42-year-old mother of two who dices with death to teach girls at a private school in the region’s main town Mingora.

‘We have to veil ourselves and wear shuttlecock burqas. We are not safe even at home.
We fear the Taliban all the time. Life is becoming worse and worse for women in Swat,’ she told AFP by telephone.

Educated and financially self-sufficient, she cannot even pop to the shops without a male relative, leaving her frequently couped up at home for hours, waiting for a suitable escort to become available.

‘You cannot imagine how I manage to get to school, practically every day I think about leaving the job and sitting at home.’

‘Life bores us to tears. There is no entertainment. We can’t even think about cable TV, cinema, film and music. Imagine I can’t even go shopping or to the bazaar as women are banned by Taliban.’

Salma Javed, 35, is a nurse at a local hospital, where women – however sick – can only be admitted if accompanied by a male relative.

‘Every woman fears she will be killed if she comes out, so even sick and pregnant women have to visit hospital with their husbands.’

Salma would love to leave, but she cannot scrape together the money to set herself up in Peshawar.

‘Now we are waiting to see what will happen after the peace deal, but let me tell you things will not change for women,’ she said.

The only light in Shahnaz Kousar’s life is that the Taliban – at least for now – are allowing her to go to school in Mingora. But outside her 10th grade classroom, the daily pleasures of shopping and make-up are gone.

‘We are now totally depending on Taliban. There’s not a single shop left where I can go and buy cosmetics, all shops selling women’s things are either closed or empty.’

‘I remember when I used to go to this market with my mother and sisters, but now it seems like a dream.’

More on arts and Islam. Pakistan.

As part of VTB’s ongoing series on Islam’s war on the arts Here is a piece from Express India.

At VTB we feel its necessary to have this special focus as so many leftist organizations seem to flock to the cause of Islamists who if they at all understood the consequences of a victory for ‘their side’ may have second thoughts. Islam is not a poor tiny persecuted minority but a substantial fraction of the overall population of the earth which controls vast sections of the world and some of its most strategic resources. Islam also has strict precepts against the arts both musical and representative. Sculptors painters and musicians can expect ostracism at best and torture and murder more typically as we see in the Swat valley. This gentleman in the story below, was lucky compared to the numerous dancers and musicians who have been murdered in Swat Afghanistan and elsewhere Islam controls the monopoly on force.

Artists flee Swat valley to escape fanatics’ threats

Posted: Mar 06, 2009 at 1532 hrs IST

Karachi Mohammad Shahid scrapes together a living in a city slum by painting birds, flowers, animals and celebrity portraits onto minibuses – and vows never to return to the horrors of Swat valley.

After pro-Taliban vigilantes beat and threatened him at gunpoint, he swapped the green pastures and sweeping mountains of his birthplace for the concrete jungle of Pakistan’s smoggy metropolis of Karachi on the Gulf.

It was heart-breaking to leave the idyll of his youth, he said, but there was no choice. “I had to come here because there was no other chance for me or my family to survive,” said 45-year-old Shahid.

The memories of the terrifying campaign waged by Islamist hardliners to enforce sharia law are still fresh for Shahid, and no fledgling truce between the government and those who chased him out will persuade him to return.

“I’m a painter, an artist. I can’t do anything else to earn a living. The Taliban won’t allow people like us to do our work, which saw my family suffer.

Shahid said he used to make a good living painting landscapes, birds, Pakistani and Indian film stars, pavement caricatures and portraits, which were popular with tourists who flocked to the once-friendly and tolerant valley.

But then the fanatics came, the tourists left and life changed for those who made a living from the arts.

New movie on Islam and the west.

I believe this is actually a clip from the most excellent film Farewell Israel which someone appears to have put on youtube. I will post a segment or two here but I strongly recommend getting this scholarly film which truly does explain the current period of conflict very well.

The entire movie appears to be here although I’m not 100% sure its the original edit as some parts appear to have been edited in differently than the original. It is still very worth watching. Also worth getting the original from Amazon.com

The cost of surrender. Christians in Swat

Here is a link from Asianews on an attack on a Christian community in Swat. In case anyone doesn’t know, the government of Pakistan has surrendered to the Taliban/Al Queda coalition by giving them a homeland in the formerly wonderful Swat Valley.

The Pakistanis refer to it as a peace deal however it is indistinguishable from a surrender in as much as the Taliban now enforces the most draconian version of sharia law similar to what was the norm in pre 911 Afghanistan including but not limited to, the killing of musicians, the public hanging of dancers bodies and flogging and murder of anyone who breaks the most arcane Muslim rules. An example might be, having pants that are too long or not properly shrieking “Allah” when slaughtering animals for meat. The bold is mine as there are illustrations here of an ongoing thread at VTB about Islam and the arts.

Muslims attack Christian community in Punjab
One woman has been killed, and 28 people have been injured at the Presbyterian church in Songo. Violence is on the rise in the Swat Valley and in the northern regions. Thousands of people are fleeing after the introduction of sharia, including many teachers and entire families. In Takhtbhai, in the district of Mardan, there have been bomb attacks on 16 music stores.

Peshawar (AsiaNews/Agencies) – One woman has died and 28 people have been injured in an attack on the Presbyterian Christian community in the village of Songo, in the district of Gujranwala, province of Punjab. The attack took place on the evening of March 2: at 8 p.m., a group of Muslim inhabitants opened fire on the faithful who had gathered in the church for prayer. The woman, named Shakeela, died on the spot, while other members of the faithful suffered injuries of various kinds while they were seeking to flee from the bullets or to protect the pastor. The attackers broke the windows of the church, destroyed the Bibles and the other prayer books, and removed the cross from the roof of the building.

The victims of the attacks say that this was a premeditated action, and recount that in the previous weeks they had received a number of threats from the attackers. The authors of the attack have been identified, and a report against them has been filed at the local police station. The Pakistan Christian Post says that for now, the security forces have turned down the request for investigations on the attackers. For this reason, the burial of the woman’s body has been delayed, to permit an autopsy in evidence of the attack.

The attack in Songo is added to a long list of violent events that are now being seen more or less everywhere in Punjab and in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). The attacks are carried out by the Taliban, but also by ordinary people, and they are not coming to an end in the Swat Valley, where a fragile ceasefire has been attained by the government, thanks to the concession of introducing sharia in that district and in the district of Malakand.

During the night of March 5, the Taliban blew up 16 CD and DVD stores in Takhtbhai, in the district of Mardan northeast of Peshawar, the capital of the NWFP. It is one of the many places in the province that in recent months have come under the grip of the Taliban. In February, it was the theater of attacks against girls’ schools, carried out by Islamic fundamentalists, and in spite of the fact that the agreement between the Taliban and the government provides for the reopening of schools to girls, many are afraid of fresh violence.

Since the beginning of the year, people have been abandoning the Swat Valley by the thousands. These include many families and a number of teachers, who have formally stated that they are going on vacation. One mother who left the district recounts: “All the best teachers from my children’s schools have left. I do not think they will go back. According to my relatives there, many children have gone back to school, but there are now too few teachers.”

Maybe now I should make this policy change official. When I started VTB one of the issues I wished to address is the dangerous and counter productive irrational leftist movement to combat ‘anthropogenic global warming’. A disingenuous goal if ever there was one, as if you question nine in ten supporters of it long enough ultimately they will come back at you with “Yes the science on it is a little shaky but I still support it as it makes people ‘think’ the right way about the environment.” A truly repugnant and Orwellian agenda. It’s OK for me to lie to you because you making your choices based on lies makes for a better world. And typically, these are the exact same people who virulently oppose religion of all stripes. Except Tibetan Buddhism. Because they know nothing about it.

I no longer concern myself with global warming hysteria because anyone who still believes in it despite the last 8 years of climate data and the discovered falsification of facts in order to propagate this myth is clearly never going to accept the facts. They are anti corporate types who use the language of green to support a Marxist anti western agenda. They do not actually care about the ‘environment’. For an excellent essay on this read the co founder of Greenpeace, Patrick More. He states it very clearly as his reason for leaving Greenpeace altogether.

The threat we have to deal with, the one which will in fact ‘change our environment’ in every conceivable sense of the term is Islam. As Fjordman so eloquently writes extensively on, The Byzantines where an enlightened modern people with solid foundations in Greek thought as well, they were the Greeks. And as the degree of jihadi Muslims infiltrating western bureaucracies increases and the degree of submission of some of my favorite nations also grows, we clearly have decided to focus on the anti jihad. The stakes are higher than I can grasp. The degree to which the threat of the loss of all western values becomes more apparent to me each day. In the most excellent style of Mark Steyn, we at VTB try and understate the real case so that any skeptic who chooses to challenge these articles by doing honest research will discover our case is more serious than even we present it. This by the way, frightens we here at vladtepesblog as well.

The problem is two fold. The extent of jihadi preparations for violent actions against western targets, by far the lesser of the problem, compared to the extent to which Muslims who have a clear well understood and publicized agenda of global manifest destiny have infiltrated organizations typically thought of as protecting liberalism. Agencies such as the U.N. now co opted to an anti Semitic and pro sharia law agenda as we see by both Durban I and Durban II as well as the current binding resolution in front of the general assembly of the UN protecting Islam from criticism and of course, a large host of ‘Human Rights’ organizations which now actively work against any real human rights.

And on that note, some links:

Muslim girls in Norway beaten and abused for not wearing hijab all the time. Women’s groups anywhere on earth I hope are profoundly ashamed for their lack of attention on this and thousands of similar stories around the world today. All of us should of course, this isn’t a feminist issue so much as one of fundamental human rights but feminist groups who often live on Government grants seem more concerned about interpreting comments at the water cooler than they are about women being kept in London basement prisons for refusing to marry a first cousin from Pakistan. Often actually being murdered for it. Read Bruce Bawer’s ‘While Europe Slept’ for statistics on this.

Five Muslims convicted for murdering a British Teen. Of course the ‘funny’ thing about this article is how it sparked a debate on ‘knife control’ and not immigrant or Muslim control. Europe (with the notable exception of Denmark) refuses to admit that a grossly disproportionate amount of violent and politically driven crime is from Muslim immigrants who often state that the crimes they commit is for the spread of and glorification of Islam.

Muslims like to pretend their is no compulsion of religion in Islam. Something they say to ease our minds about our new Muslim overlords. I wonder how they would explain entire Bulgarian villages forced to convert to extremist Islam then?

Canada is right and truly fucked. How can one know a place is fucked? Because something as hideous as this happens in a Canadian high school, an indoctrination session by anti Semites disguised with a veneer of anti Israeli politics and they expressly forbade any adults to attend. No parents, No teachers, no recording whatsoever. The only way it could be more fucked than this, is if it did not get reported at all. Which I would wager is the case in Islamic nations. Like England.

Lastly, What would a links post be without a terrorism reference. India now states that two Pakistani officers where involved with the Mumbai attacks.

As Baron Bodissey puts it so well at GOV…

by Baron Bodissey

Ever since the Mumbai terrorist attacks last November, India has asserted that Pakistani nationals inside Pakistan were part of the conspiracy to murder and wreak havoc among the population of Mumbai. Pakistan at first denied any connection, then acknowledged that there might be a few Pakistani “rogue elements” who conspired with the attackers. As the weeks wore on, deeper and deeper connections between Pakistan and the Mumbai terrorists were ferreted out and exposed in the Indian press.

shariah justice; a contradiction in terms

Vladtepes has decided to install a regular series on shariah. We felt it important to do so since there is some confusion surrounding the term itself;  it’s meaning, application, extension, foundation, history and narrative. Proponents of it in the west would have us believe it to be nothing more than a benign set of Islamic  judiciary laws dealing primarily with marriage and divorce, yet closer inspection reveals it’s all encompassing and immutable reality. Sharia must be understood in terms of it’s entirety and the far reaching implications and consequences it bears.

Shariah is the body of Islamic religious law, the legal framework by which all aspects of life are regulated based on Islamic principles of jurisprudence. It deals with all aspects of daily life; politics, economics, banking, contracts, family, sexuality, hygiene, and social issues. It is also the antithises of liberal secularism, a set of religiously pious and absurd constructs unparalelled in it’s opposition to democratic principle and fundamentals. The Muslim Brotherhood describes shariah as ” the real effective way out of all sufferings and problems”.

Patrick Poole of Frontpage magazine wrote in May 2006 of the discovery of the Muslim Brotherhood’s twenty-one year old document known as “The Project”. The contents clearly point to an intentional, long term and multi-pronged approach, a manifesto written to fulfill their desired plan of ‘cultural invasion’ to aid in the conquest of the west. The MBH established in 1928, is arguably one of the older organizations during modern times which has devoted itself in the re-radicalization process, with offshoot groups such as al-Qaeda and Hamas actively participating in jihad on it’s behalf. It clings to the credo: “Allah is our objective. The Prophet is our leader. Quran is our law. Jihad is our way. Dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope”. Keeping this in mind, their endorsement of sharia isn’t exactly the mark of sterling rationale or collective sanity but is an ever faithful testament to their dangerous mandate of supremacy and domination, shariah sanctioned of course.

In 2004, Canada had been tested in terms of the proposed adoption of Islamic law. Syed Mumtaz Ali, the lawyer and shariah advocate who sought it’s implementation gleefully stated ” every act of your life is to be governed by shariah. If you are not obeying the law, you are not a Muslim.” He was referring clearly to the laws of Islam and not of Canadian law. Although the proposal was smacked down due in large part to national and international objection and it’s inclusion as a parallel system rejected, his statement offered us a glimpse of shariah reality.  Islam is shariah and shariah is Islam.

Of those opposing the creeping implementation of shariah two groups immediately come to mind. The first, Women Against Shariah are of the view that Islamic law cannot be allowed to flourish in any way. By virtue of it’s inherent discrimination of non-Muslims, appalling record of human rights abuses and open violations of equality it (shariah) calls for immediate ridicule and eventual abandonment. Women Against Shariah’s description is succinct:

“it is our position that shariah law imposes second class status on women and is incompatible with the standards of liberal western societies and the basic principles of human rights that include equality under the law and the protection of individual freedoms. The sharia code mandates the complete authority of men and women, including the control of their movement, education, marital options, clothing, bodies, place of residence and all other aspects of their existence. Further, it calls for the beating, punishment and murder of women who do not comply with shariah requirements.” Women Against Sharia’s mission is “to prevent and outlaw the imposition of shariah law in the United States for both Muslim and American women as either a parallel legal system or a replacement for existing laws”.

The second, Muslims Against Shariah, is an Islamic reform movement. This group strives to educate Muslims of the dangers presented by Islamic religious texts and the need for reform, to instruct non-Muslims of the differences between moderate Muslims and Islamists and to reinforce the truth that increasingly moderate Muslims are also the targets of Islamic terror. Both organizations are solid in their committments and provide numerous articles relaying the oppression and cruelty that accompany shariah. Both are also brave in their refusal to be coerced and dominated by a centuries old legal system unfit for the 21st century.

Writing for American Thinker, James Arlandson writes one of the best articles I have come across on shariah. “Top ten reasons why shariah is bad for all societies” is a must read for anyone wishing to understand this complex issue. His writing is thorough, with well documented articles, quotations from the Quran and hadith and classical legal opinion. Also included are supporting articles which examine the historical and literary context of each Quranic verse that is cited.

I do believe that shariah is bad for all societies. I also believe that to support Muslims who fully understand it’s horror is not only an act of compassion but one of absolute necessity. Shallow excuses of inaction will only lead to more gratuitous cruelty, stifling oppression, religious decadence and death in the name of Islam.

National post on Durban

The following article is about the events at the ‘Durban anti racism’ confrence that took place a few years ago and is a preview of the events that will take place in Geneva next month at Durban II.

The only thing with which I disagree with the author is that it will be a do nothing inefective confrence. In fact it will do a lot and be very effective. We can see the effects Durban I had already with universities all over the western world holding ‘Israel Apartheid week’ which are becoming increasingly hostile and openly anti semitic while more and more pro terrorist. The connection to Durban is real in many ways but even if not direct, which it is, it legitimizes antisemitism and anti Israel ism-in a major global forum. Please find article below..

The travesty of Durban

Michael Ross, National Post Published: Wednesday, March 04, 2009

Protesters at the first Durban conference in 2001.AFP, Getty ImagesProtesters at the first Durban conference in 2001.

Back in August, 2001, while working for a counterterrorism unit of Israel’s Secret Intelligence Service, I witnessed a hijacking in the making. Not the kind that involved a plane or a ship, but the systematic takeover of the UN-sanctioned World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa. Later this year, the same hijackers will return to the scene of the crime.

As is now widely known, the original Durban conference devolved into an orgy of blatant anti-Semitism. The delegates to the conference didn’t even pretend to engage in a discussion about Israel’s right to secure territorial boundaries or promote a peaceful resolution of the Middle East conflict. Official representatives from Iran and Syria objected to the inclusion of anti-Semitism or the Holocaust in the conference’s agenda. There would be no sympathy for the Jewish plight nor any attempt to understand the historical context that gave rise to Israel’s existence in the first place.

A wide selection of hate literature vilifying Jews and Israel was disseminated during the Durban conference. Some of the “protest” material included Nazi-style caricatures of Jews with hooked noses. The only difference was that the updated hate propaganda showed Jews with Palestinian blood on their hands …as they sat on their piles of money. There were various banners and posters showing Israelis wearing Nazi uniforms and other regalia related to the perpetrators of the Holocaust.

Durban lite: Israel apartheid week

March 1 through to 8, 2009, is Israel Apartheid Week, the fifth annual event of it’s kind organized to bring awareness to the plight of Arabs and Muslims world wide, persecuted at the hands of the great Zionist entity, Israel. Over forty universities will hold seminars, dialogues and discussions inviting guest speakers to illuminate students of the ongoing injustice and discriminatory practices of Israel. Sounds fine. Nice. Informative.

Many would presume this event as benign and nothing but a registered, legitimate forum to counter severe bias and discrimination. What an opportunity for a young thinking man or woman to oppose such terrific injustice and perpetual hardship and to flex their intillectual bicepts in the world of geo-politics. It is easy to latch onto a cause, any cause, especially if it is distant enough to cushion any real responsibility. It is even easier when university administrators and student bodies lie in absolute apathy, paving the road for extremist ideology to flourish. And easier still when young bloods are culled to swallow extremist rhetoric by foreign influenced agencies.

Israel Apartheid Week is anything but benign. Like the Durban conferences,  which both Canada and the United States have seen fit to abandon realizing it to be THE festival of hatred, IAW seeks to annually undermine Israel at every opportunity, de-legitimize it’s right to defend itself at the hands of terrorist assault and aggression and seeks to deny Islam’s participation as a political, religious and warring aggressor. While the Durban conferences denouce Jews as a sub-human group worthy of abuse and seeks to condemn open criticism of religion, Israel Apartheid Week seems a spawned copy of the anti-Semitic and anti free expression propaganda machine, seduced into action by Canadian Arab and Muslim organizations loudmouthing on behalf of their instructors abroad. In 2008 school children were invited by both the CAF and the CIC to write essays for a cash prize on the ‘ethnic cleansing of Palestine’ as part of the celebration of Canadian Islamic History Month, held every October. Coincidence perhaps?

National Post columnist Craig Offman writes an article detailing the heightened tensions between Arab/Muslim and Jewish students on Canadian university campuses. Jewish students are warned of increasing threats of violence and police probes have been launched into instances of campus racism. It would seem to me that Canadian universities have become a flourishing platform which mirrors a broader based coalition of anti-Semitic and Islamist nations intent upon importing radicalism, excusing terror and promoting intolerance.

I would wonder what the cushioned, left world reaction would be to the hosting of say, an annual Islamic Terrorism Week?

Polygamy, Islam and marriage. Even a whore gets some choice.

We have made the case before on VTB that the issue is less one of polygamy, (and that is fortunate as the fight against that is lost in the western world anyway) and more of one of forced marriage. Pretty much every western nation has already caved in to Muslim multi-mate arrangements without so much as a debate in the legislatures. However this article, ‘Muslim bride tricked into marriage’ caught my eye today from The Religion Of Peace.

A MUSLIM woman tricked into an arranged marriage presided over by her local imam has had it annulled by the Family Court.

She thought she was signing paperwork in preparation for the ceremony but, because her culture does not allow her to talk to men other than her family, she couldn’t ask questions.
Her brother said he thought things were not right but the family’s strict Muslim culture meant their father and the imam could not be wrong.
He said he was asked to be a witness and told he was signing an engagement certificate – although the document was headed certificate of marriage.

“We are a traditional patriarchal family and it would not be appropriate for me to question my father or the imam,” the brother told the court.

The names of the couple and the imam have been suppressed by the Family Court. It is not the first Muslim “marriage” ruled void by the court.
Justice Nahum Mushin said there had been previous similar cases, including one in which the couple became married when all they thought they were doing was becoming engaged.
In the present case, the 27-year-old “bride” is a public servant from a traditional Islamic family.
She told the court that in May 2007 her family and the family of a 39-year-old Muslim in Canada began discussing an arranged marriage.
She said arrangements were made between the man, a divorced financial planner, and her father “because in our culture it is not acceptable that women speak to men not in their family”.

She first met the man at the airport and three days later the local imam attended the family’s home with a “bundle of papers”.

She was told by her father to dress “appropriately” and waited outside the room until called in, when she signed the documents where she was told.
The “husband” left Australia two weeks later and the couple only discovered they were married when, in January 2008, they agreed via text they wanted to call the engagement off.

The woman told the court the marriage was never consummated.

As we have made the case before, how many wives is certainly a debatable issue. But we in the west need to make something perfectly clear to ourselves and that is how we view marriage at a level so fundamental that we probably do not even imagine that others may not see it as we do. To be clear, the notion that people who get married, consent to it.

The above case is relatively benign. Practically a clerical error. But one can see the potential in it. However hundreds of thousands of true forced marriages take place annually in the Muslim world. Marriages where the woman literally may be killed by her own family should she refuse to be sold like a goat to a man, often a stranger and often very much older.

The media is fond of referring to Muslim arranged marriages. It has a nice old world ring to it. Sort of charming. But many Islamic marriages are more accurately described as ‘forced’ marriages where the female has no actual choice in the matter whatsoever.

When we debate homosexual marriage in western nations it never occurs to anyone whether or not both people wish this arrangement. It is a given. The debate is whether or not a state stamp of approval on this sort of arrangement will have a deleterious effect on the rest of our culture and society. When we debate polygamy it usually has the exact same set of parameters. However anyone who has read Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s most excellent book ‘Infidel’ or Bruce Bawer’s turpentine for the eye book, ‘While Europe Slept’ would know that in far too many cases, marriage is a property deal between men in one or more families to consign a woman to a man with absolutely no choice given to the woman and often without even her knowledge of the matter until she is delivered to the man’s address.

These must never be allowed to have state sanction at all. Preferably anywhere on earth but as the UN slides backwards away from any meaningful human rights towards protection of Islam we can forget that. But in western nations that still have a trace of true human rights, surely the most basic of which is the right to self determination in marriage. Even a whore gets to pick her tricks.

Eeyore for VTB

India, Islam and freedom of speech.

It is important for we in the west who see our most fundamental freedoms slipping away exponentially faster than it took to earn them in the first place to remember that India has the same problem and primarily for the same reasons. Islam. John McCain when he ran for president of the United states suggested scrapping the UN in favour of the G8 plus India and Brazil. Like most brilliant ideas, it is too far ahead of the general knowledge curve to seem reasonable but is exactly what is called for. Like relativity, Einstein’s universe shaking concepts of time and gravity, not one of Einstein’s generation accepted it but all of the following one did. The question is whether or not we have the time to wait for the next generation to adopt McCain’s theory of a union of free states. Not to take the physics analogy too far but perhaps we cant afford any uncertainty principle for very long on this one.

A blogger from India has been sending me some links about the erosion of freedom of speech there as well and for the same reasons. Muslims demand that no person or agency should be able to say anything critical of Islam and perhaps worse, no one may even reproduce things Muslim leaders say which may cast Islam in a poor light even if 100% factually correct. Horrifyingly, the odd Christian Jewish and Hindu leader senses a political opportunity and will back the Islamic stance imagining perhaps that stopping religious criticism might be good for the authority of their respective churches as well.

These people need to study history and perhaps more importantly the wording of currently debated binding resolutions now in front of the UN general assembly.

Islam will not be used as anyone’s strong man. Jews Christians and Hindus will enjoy as much protection from blasphemy as the stone Buddha’s did in Afghanistan and as churches and synagogues and temples that have been on lands bordering large Muslim populations.

A few weeks ago on VTB we blogged about an Indian editor who was fired from his job from a major Indian daily newspaper for publishing a fairly innocuous piece on freedom of speech and specifically from irrational religious authority. The author of the article did a reprint saying that no matter what riots and demonstrations take place based on what he said, he stands by every word of it and while that should be allowed to be true in all cases, this was a very good article and all of us need to stand behind it in any case.

Now Indian blogger’s find themselves in danger from the law if they challenge irrational religious authority. I do wonder if the people of the early dark ages saw the creeping draconian and arbitrary rule of the western church as not to be believed in much the way all my day to day acquaintances see the current challenge to secular freedoms. But knowing the likely answer to that question is not nearly as interesting as one might think. Not only did they probably not see it coming as an unimaginable and unlikely event but we will know similar restrictions as handed down by bodies like the U.N. The E.U. and any other social policy body infected with Islamist organizations such as the Organization of Islamic Countries.

From the Times of India:

NEW DELHI: A 19-year-old blogger’s case could forever change the ground rules of blogging. Bloggers may no longer express their uninhibited views

on everything under the sun, for the Supreme Court said they may face libel and even prosecution for the blog content.

[…]

This chilling warning emerged as a Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam refused to protect a 19-year-old Kerala boy, who had started a community on Orkut against Shiv Sena, from protection against summons received from a Maharashtra court on a criminal case filed against him.

Petitioner Ajith D had started a community on Orkut against Shiv Sena. In this community, there were several posts and discussions by anonymous persons who alleged that Shiv Sena was trying to divide the country on region and caste basis.

Reacting to these posts, the Shiv Sena youth wing’s state secretary registered a criminal complaint at Thane police station in August 2008 based on which FIR was registered against Ajith under Sections 506 and 295A pertaining to hurting public sentiment.

Hurting public sentiment. This sounds a lot like the threat to public safety the British used to prevent Geert Wilders from speaking in the UK. or the Canadian section thirteen of the ‘hate crimes act’ where something which is said is likely to expose a person or group to hatred or contempt under which countless Canadians have been charged most famously Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant. It seems as if nations which once stood proud and defiant in the face of religious intolerance now have created special rules which those very intolerant groups use against us. These laws go from the frightening to the ridiculous which in fact are more frightening. When they pass laws about not speaking out against their religion directly at least at one level of reason we understand it. When they pass a law saying no one may use an elephant as a symbol as it offends worshipers of the Hindu god Ganesh we now are hamstrung in anything we may say or represent for fear of any religious authority finding offense in it, and as there is now great power in being offended, you can bank on an objection from the funny hat crowd.

Thought crimes laws are like a machine gun in the sense that we like them when we are holding them but we like them less when someone else is pointing them at us. They are unlike a machine gun in another way however. Whenever you create a law which abrogates free speech no matter how noble the initial purpose may be for that law, its not a matter of if but of when someone else will take control of it and destroy its original intent and we as a free people along with it.

This has clearly happened at the U.N. in Canada, India and Holland. Do not imagine this will not effect you. It already has. It just may take a while to notice. Cancer is like that.
