Obama’s Muslim Outreach

One year ago I wrote about Obama’s Muslim connection. No matter how strong this connection was, the main stream media and ultimately Jewish Americans ignored it.

“The person who made me proudest of all,” Obama wrote, “was Roy. Actually, now we call him Abongo, his Luo name, for two years ago he decided to reassert his African heritage. He converted to Islam, and has sworn off pork and tobacco and alcohol.”

On February 27th, Barack Hussein Obama said the Muslim call to prayer is “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth.”

Although Obama played the Christian card while campaigning, he is playing the Muslim card now in such a blatant fashion that even I am astounded.

Here is his record to date after inauguration,

  • Obama’s first call was to Mahmoud Abbas who is not even a head of state. Obama was delivering a message to Israel and the world.
  • Obama’s first interview, within days of inauguration, was with the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya Networks In it her stressed his own Muslim ties and his hopes for a Palestinian state. His message was “U.S. not your enemy”

Muslim workers receive $1.35 million under a religious discrimination settlement.

A federal judge gave approval for Gold’n Plump Inc. and an employment agency to pay $1.35 million to settle lawsuits alleging religious discrimination against Muslims at a chicken processing plant in Cold Spring, Minn.

The money will go to 128 Somali Muslims who claim that St. Cloud-based Gold’n Plump violated their religious rights by refusing to allow them prayer breaks during work hours, and to another 28 workers who said a St. Paul employment agency, the Work Connection Inc., required them to sign forms acknowledging they would be required to handle pork.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission investigated the allegations and said it found cause to believe discrimination occurred, according to lawsuits filed last year.

In a settlement approved Tuesday by U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeanne Graham, Gold’n Plump will add a paid break during the second half of each shift to accommodate Muslim employees who wish to pray. The break is in addition to one early in the shift and lunch breaks required by law.

The Work Connection has agreed to provide offers of employment to the 28 job seekers who were turned away for not signing the “pork form.”

The $1.35 million settlement includes $985,000 for legal costs and $365,000 in cash payments to the 156 workers.

National Post: Justice ‘cannot be veiled’

Permitting alleged victims or any witness to wear a veil while testifying would fundamentally change core principles in our justice system, an Ontario Superior Court judge was told yesterday.

“Justice must be seen to be done. It cannot be masked or veiled,” Jack Pinkofsky said. “The face of justice cannot be faceless,” the veteran defence lawyer added.

Superior Court Justice Frank Marrocco has been asked to decide whether an alleged victim in a sexual-assault case in Toronto will be permitted to testify while wearing her niqab. The Muslim veil covers all of her face except her eyes.

The provincial court judge presiding over the preliminary hearing of the two defendants ruled last fall that the woman’s religious beliefs were not that strong and ordered her to remove the veil. She refused and was granted the right to appeal the decision to the Superior Court.

While it may be harder to assess the demeanour of a witness in a niqab, the impact on the defence “is not that significant,” said the woman’s lawyer, David Butt. “If you have got the eyes, you have got the picture,” he suggested.

The Criminal Code permits witnesses such as alleged sexual-assault victims or children to testify by video or behind a one-way screen. In both situations, the defence lawyer and accused can see the witness. Mr. Butt explained that this would not be acceptable for his client because men could see her without the veil.

The legal issue for Judge Marrocco is not about the Charter of Rights and religious freedom, but a question of “natural justice,” said Mr. Pinkofsky, whose firm is representing one of the accused.

“The submissions I heard today suggested we should be glad that Pierre Elliott Trudeau crafted the Charter, because we never had anything before the Charter. That is not correct. This has been vested in the common law for centuries. It is the rule of law. We don’t search for the half-truth,” Mr. Pinkofsky said.

He spoke of the “right of confrontation” of an accused person to see his accuser, which dates back to Roman law and is enshrined in the U. S. Constitution. It is not enough to hear what a witness says to be able to properly assess credibility and receive a fair trial, Mr. Pinkofsky said.

“If you went to any man or woman on the street and suggested they would fully appreciate what someone is saying just by listening and not by seeing, they would guffaw,” Mr. Pinkofsky said. “Demeanour is part of the very fabric of what we call evidence, and it is not to be taken away from us without a terrible struggle.”

The Ontario Ministry of the Attorney-General is taking the position that the woman should be allowed to wear the niqab at the preliminary hearing, because the judge has limited legal powers to assess credibility when determining if the accused should go to trial. Crown attorney Laurie Gonet explained that the province has not taken an official position on the broader issue of whether this should be allowed in an trial.

Here is a text from the pen of René Servoise, former ambassador of France to Indonesia. It is posted at Bivouac-Id, Le Post and Terre d’Israel. Despite its length, I chose to abridge it only slightly.

A mutation of our nation is in progress. It is growing, it is profound but uncontrolled. In all likelihood, the immense majority of Frenchmen are unaware of it.

Hundreds of thousands of Muslim families, from North Africa, the Middle East and black Africa – whose religion, aspirations and mores are radically different from ours – now live on our soil. Their birth rate is higher than that of European families. What is the consequence? Within 30 years the population of Islamist culture could be in the majority among those 40 years old or younger. “In France, we will have between 6 and 8 million Arabs by the years 2005 – 2010,” said Edgar Pisani, honorary president of the Arab World Institute. We have been duly warned: this is a radical transformation (political, economic, cultural and social) of our society.

This mutation is in progress at the very moment when, to use Toynbee’s expression, “an external proletariat” is forming on the southern and western shores of the Mediterranean Sea. This army of reservists came about as a result of the birth rate of these peoples, and the absence of an economic policy capable of guaranteeing them a decent life in their homeland. In front of them lie France, Italy, Spain and Germany, lands of mirage, highly developed, with guaranteed employment, free social protection and education. Who could resist the call of this “promised land”?

At the same time, all over the world, roused by immense hopes, Islam is enjoying an unprecedented revival. It is awakening after a long night. It has renewed vigor, pugnacity and ambitions. From Morocco to Indonesia, from the Muslim States of Central Asia to black Africa, more than one billion two hundred million men – young compared to the aging populations of Europe – constitute a “community” (Umma).

It is transnational, motivated by spiritual aspirations, material demands and political ambitions, and (here and there) financed by revenue from oil.

In France, the successive waves of Italians, Poles, central European Jews, Spaniards and Portuguese, had never posed comparable problems of integration. Why? Because they belonged to the European branch. Their religious traditions and their ambition to acquire more individual freedoms facilitated their assimilation. Finally – and this is far from the least important reason – these immigrants expressed a desire to share the destiny of the French nation. To meld into it. Integration cannot be decreed. In order for it to materialize it must be desired by two, this is obvious. And the two must converge. Today, the situation is different, radically different. An active and determined minority among the Islamists refuses integration. Deliberately.


In close communion with Islam (its matrix), it is receptive to orders from abroad, to spiritual counsel, ideology and financial support. And much more. Not only does it intend to keep its identity, but to re-Islamize the non-practicing, if not convert the natives of the host country to the true faith. Islam has never conceived of itself as a minority in a secular State, but necessarily as the majority religion. (…) Exalted by its renewal, propelled both by its demography and its absence of economic development, infiltrating wherever there is no resistance, Islam is advancing like a wave.

The French people can measure its vitality by the number of mosques multiplying on their territory (sometimes with the help of Catholic and lay leaders), mosques run by imams 96% of whom are from foreign countries. Also by the prospect of seeing – in the second half of the 21st century – the fall of Catholicism in France to second rank, leaving first place to Islam.

Thus two dynamics are developing: one inside our borders (…); the other outside (…) Concomitant and convergent, these changes are determining factors for Europe and for the French nation where the demographic stagnation is alarming.

Deli Jihad.

So what conclusions can one draw from the recent arrest of a woman in Guelph for putting sewing needles in packages of lunch meat at a local store. First we should look at the names of those involved. Schneiders is a name of German origin but also the surname of many Jews. Even more common in it’s other variant Schneiderman. Now lets look at the name of the arrested. Mastoora is a name of Muslim origin. This connection will not be brought up by the media and they will pass it off as a disgruntled ex employee [ Mastoora had recently been fired after seven years of employment with Maple Leaf foods] who was seeking revenge on a former employer. Perhaps that is all this is about. Then again, perhaps not.

This dangerous act seems to run along the same lines as the attacks we see on Starbucks. Whether Starbucks or Schneiders is owned by Jews or not is irrelevant. If the Muslim community perceives this to be true then they are soft targets for jihad and shall be attacked accordingly.

Guelph police make arrest in meat tampering case

Guelph, Ont. police have made an arrest in connection with a series of deli packages that were recently found with sewing needles inside them at a local No Frills supermarket.

Late Thursday, Guelph police announced they had made an arrest in connection with the case.

Store management called police after a No Frills customer brought a package that had been tampered with back to the supermarket last week.

The subsequent investigation found 13 sewing needles that had been inserted into 12 different Schneider’s meat product packages sold at the No Frills supermarket located at 191 Silvercreek Parkway in Guelph.

The store immediately pulled Schneider’s products from its shelves and police investigated the matter with the help of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Sgt. Doug Pflug told ctvtoronto.ca that all of the affected products had been yanked from store shelves within a 25 kilometre radius of the No Frills during the investigation.

No injuries were reported as a result of the tampering.

Mastoora Qezil, 41, of Guelph, was arrested and charged with one count of common nuisance. She is scheduled to appear in bail court on Friday.

Prosecutors have filed hate crime charges against an 18-year-old Seattle man accused of accosting another man on a Metro bus while yelling anti-gay slurs.

Abiazzizi I. Idris has been charged with second-degree attempted robbery and malicious harassment, the state’s hate crime statute, in the March 10 attack.

In court documents, police claim Idris was riding on a Metro coach near the 9000 block of Rainier Avenue South when he slapped the man in the back of the head. He then allegedly asked, using a slur, if he was homosexual.

The man disembarked the bus moments later, followed by Idris and an associate. Police say Idris again approached him, telling the man that homosexuality violates his religion.

Confronted by Idris, the man again said he was not gay. Idris then, police assert, “grabbed the victim around his neck and said ‘Give me $10 and your cell phone and I’ll let you go.'”

The owner of a nearby grocery store spotted the altercation and phoned 911. Police arrived and arrested Idris, who was later identified as the assailant, according to prosecutor’s statements.

Idris remains in King County Jail on $50,000 bail. He has not entered a plea in the case.

The victim’s sexual orientation is not noted in court documents. Under state law, malicious harassment occurs when a defendant threatens someone based on their perception of their sexual orientation or other factor.

TTC Lacks Security

I am totally shaken. On the subway on my way over to feed Kathy’s cat while they’re away at a funeral, it finally happened. Some deranged 6th Century Mohammedan lost it and began screaming ALLAHU ACKBAR, calling everyone racists, and talking about Bin Laden and rising up.

Like good little sheep, someone pushed the yellow passenger alarm, stopping the train in the station. The little mid-train conductor man stepped out of his booth to see what was happening. We tried explaining to him that there was a potential terrorist on the train wit us, to call the police. Thew little Asian fellow appeared not to understand a damn word we were saying, decided there was nothing to see, and got back on the train.

Meanwhile Mohammed continued to rage about Allah on the platform where many of us stood. (obviously I got off the train – I wasn’t going to stay stuck on there with an Islamic madman). No security came. The train left with Mohammed pounding on the closed doors, saying he had a metropass and a right to free speech (the irony was not lost on me). When the next train came, he got on it.

I would like to know if this is part of the city of Toronto’s protocol to deal with a terrorist threat on the underground. This guy was a lunatic who was unarmed – what if the next one is packing? Will the same level of incoherence apply to TTC staff?

On Campus: The Pro-Palestinian’s Real Agenda

During a recent visit to several university campuses in the U.S., I discovered that there is more sympathy for Hamas there than there is in Ramallah.

Listening to some students and professors on these campuses, for a moment I thought I was sitting opposite a Hamas spokesman or a would-be-suicide bomber.

I was told, for instance, that Israel has no right to exist, that Israel’s “apartheid system” is worse than the one that existed in South Africa and that Operation Cast Lead was launched only because Hamas was beginning to show signs that it was interested in making peace and not because of the rockets that the Islamic movement was launching at Israeli communities.

I was also told that top Fatah operative Marwan Barghouti, who is serving five life terms in prison for masterminding terror attacks against Israeli civilians, was thrown behind bars simply because he was trying to promote peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Furthermore, I was told that all the talk about financial corruption in the Palestinian Authority was “Zionist propaganda” and that Yasser Arafat had done wonderful things for his people, including the establishment of schools, hospitals and universities.

The good news is that these remarks were made only by a minority of people on the campuses who describe themselves as “pro-Palestinian,” although the overwhelming majority of them are not Palestinians or even Arabs or Muslims.

The bad news is that these groups of hard-line activists/thugs are trying to intimidate anyone who dares to say something that they don’t like to hear.

When the self-designated “pro-Palestinian” lobbyists are unable to challenge the facts presented by a speaker, they resort to verbal abuse.

On one campus, for example, I was condemned as an “idiot” because I said that a majority of Palestinians voted for Hamas in the January 2006 election because they were fed up with financial corruption in the Palestinian Authority.

On another campus, I was dubbed as a “mouthpiece for the Zionists” because I said that Israel has a free media. There was another campus where someone told me that I was a ‘liar” because I said that Barghouti was sentenced to five life terms because of his role in terrorism.

And then there was the campus (in Chicago) where I was “greeted” with swastikas that were painted over posters promoting my talk. The perpetrators, of course, never showed up at my event because they would not be able to challenge someone who has been working in the field for nearly 30 years.

What struck me more than anything else was the fact that many of the people I met on the campuses supported Hamas and believed that it had the right to “resist the occupation” even if that meant blowing up children and women on a bus in downtown Jerusalem.

I never imagined that I would need police protection while speaking at a university in the U.S. I have been on many Palestinian campuses in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and I cannot recall one case where I felt intimidated or where someone shouted abuse at me.

Ironically, many of the Arabs and Muslims I met on the campuses were much more understanding and even welcomed my “even-handed analysis” of the Israeli-Arab conflict. After all, the views I voiced were not much different than those made by the leaderships both in Israel and the Palestinian Authority. These views include support for the two-state solution and the idea of coexistence between Jews and Arabs in this part of the world.

The so-called pro-Palestinian “junta” on the campuses has nothing to offer other than hatred and de-legitimization of Israel. If these folks really cared about the Palestinians, they would be campaigning for good government and for the promotion of values of democracy and freedom in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Their hatred for Israel and what it stands for has blinded them to a point where they no longer care about the real interests of the Palestinians, namely the need to end the anarchy and lawlessness, and to dismantle all the armed gangs that are responsible for the death of hundreds of innocent Palestinians over the past few years.

The majority of these activists openly admit that they have never visited Israel or the Palestinian territories. They don’t know -and don’t want to know – that Jews and Arabs here are still doing business together and studying together and meeting with each other on a daily basis because they are destined to live together in this part of the world. They don’t want to hear that despite all the problems life continues and that ordinary Arab and Jewish parents who wake up in the morning just want to send their children to school and go to work before returning home safely and happily.

What is happening on the U.S. campuses is not about supporting the Palestinians as much as it is about promoting hatred for the Jewish state. It is not really about ending the “occupation” as much as it is about ending the existence of Israel.

Many of the Palestinian Authority and Hamas officials I talk to in the context of my work as a journalist sound much more pragmatic than most of the anti-Israel, “pro-Palestinian” folks on the campuses.

Over the past 15 years, much has been written and said about the fact that Palestinian school textbooks don’t promote peace and coexistence and that the Palestinian media often publishes anti-Israel material.

While this may be true, there is no ignoring the fact that the anti-Israel campaign on U.S. campuses is not less dangerous. What is happening on these campuses is not in the frame of freedom of speech. Instead, it is the freedom to disseminate hatred and violence. As such, we should not be surprised if the next generation of jihadists comes not from the Gaza Strip or the mountains and mosques of Pakistan and Afghanistan, but from university campuses across the U.S.

Recently in my part of California, an immigrant fieldworker, Marcelino de Jesus Martinez, sold his teenage daughter to a man in marriage in exchange for $16,000, 100 cases of beer, 100 cases of meat, and a case of Gatorade. He went to the police to get his daughter back when the “husband” did not pay up. He thought he had done nothing wrong; people did this in his home village. The public and legal response was immediate and unsympathetic. In the U.S., we do not let “multiculturalism” trump American law and values. But this is not true everywhere.

England, from whom we derived our religious and political values, concepts of liberty, justice, and equality under the law, has lost its way. Today’s England is a multicultural mess, whose basic values are being challenged by its largest immigrant community, migrants from the Muslim world mainly Somalia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The challenges are coming from polygamists who not only want the British justice system to permit them to practice, but also expect it to pay welfare to them, their many wives, and hordes of children. The British courts have become gutless supporters of multicultural tolerance — which is finally stirring up public wrath.

How is this done?

A man seeks sanctuary or immigration rights. He brings a wife and then divorces her a sham divorce so that he can bring a younger wife or wives from his native land. There are thousands of these cases.

The wives generally speak no English, are not permitted out of the house, and have nowhere to turn when the polygamy begins. Add to this the threat of beatings or “honor killing” if a wife goes public and “shames” the family.

Men claim that Islam permits them to have up to four wives, provided they are treated equally. For some, this means separate apartments for each wife and her children, of course paid for by state welfare money.

When the issue goes to court, surplus wives being faced with deportation, the men claim that they are only doing what their religion permits and that British law should respect that. Some judges appear weak-kneed enough to buy this.

Other government departments apparently collude in this too. This from the Daily Mail, Sue Reed, Feb. 24: “A recent review by four Government departments — the Treasury, the Work and Pensions Department, the Inland Revenue and the Home Office — has concluded that 1,000 men in the United Kingdom are now polygamists, although some say the figure is higher.”

What is more, the review found, a Muslim man can claim state support of more than 10,000 pounds a year to keep his wives, if the wedding took place in one of those countries where polygamy is commonplace, such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Saudi Arabia and across huge tracts of Africa.

At a time of financial crunch, note what a polygamist can get from the state: more generous housing benefits and bigger council houses to reflect the large size of his family. He is also able to claim 1,000 a year in child benefit for each of his growing brood.

The “growing brood” should also alarm the British, who at this rate would find themselves well outnumbered. Is this desirable? The Taxpayers’ Alliance, a lobby group, has complained: “Polygamy is not officially condoned here, so why should British taxpayers have to pay for extra benefits for men to have two, three or four wives?’ ”

One National Health Service nurse said this was now commonplace. He knew of a Bangladeshi-born male patient with two wives and 13 children aged between 3 months and 15 years.

Finally, let’s hear from a British intellectual. A leading Muslim academic at Cambridge University has claimed that men are biologically designed to desire more than one woman and that, therefore, polygamy should be legalized.

Biologically designed, eh? Perhaps wife battery is biologically designed too. How about murder? Who gave him an academic degree?

A postage stamp, a fingerprint and a Google search helped lead authorities to arrest a West Rogers Park man Friday on a charge he mailed a bomb threat to a Jewish school in late December.

Forensic investigators matched a fingerprint from the letter’s envelope to Mohammed Alkaramla, authorities said.

During a search of Alkaramla’s apartment last month, agents also found a book of postage stamps—bearing a design of two swans forming a heart shape, the same design as the stamp on the bomb threat letter. That particular stamp hadn’t been produced in more than a decade, and the book found in a dresser drawer was missing one stamp, charges say.

Agents also seized a laptop computer from Alkaramla, and subsequent analysis of the computer’s hard drive found the text of the threat letter and Google search terms such as “Bomb attack + Israel + letters,” authorities said.

It also showed that Alkaramla had tried to find a sample of a threat letter online.

Alkaramla, 24, was taken into custody at his home in the 6000 block of North Artesian Avenue by the FBI‘s Joint Terrorism Task Force. A federal judge ordered the Jordanian national held in custody at least until a detention hearing on Tuesday.

Alkaramla was under investigation in the vandalism of several Chicago-area synagogues and Jewish schools in early January after Israeli airstrikes and troop incursions into the Gaza Strip in the Mideast. But Friday’s criminal complaint said only that Alkaramla had mailed a bomb threat to Ida Crown Jewish Academy in Chicago in late December.

The letter threatened to set bombs at 22 Jewish educational centers in the Chicago area, but no explosives were found.

At Alkaramla’s apartment Friday, his father declined to comment on the arrest, but friends and neighbors said they were surprised by the charge.

“He was a calm kid,” said Anita Kivarkis, 21, who lives in an apartment beneath Alkaramla’s. “He would never think of doing something like that.”

Alkaramla was studying to be a computer engineer and worked in technical support, friends said. After last month’s search, he was more concerned about getting his computer back from authorities than about a potential arrest, Kivarkis said.

On the day of the February search, Alkaramla denied wrongdoing, saying he was being targeted because he was a Muslim.

“I’m too busy studying and working to commit [hate crimes],” he told reporters.

At Ida Crown Jewish Academy, Rabbi Leonard Matanky said that he was somewhat relieved to hear of the arrest but concerned that the letter came from a man living only 1½ miles from the school.

“It’s still disconcerting to know that a member of our geographic community would do such a thing against another good neighbor,” Matanky said

Amina and Sarah Said were murdered by their father, Yaser Said, on New Year’s Day 2008, because they had non-Muslim boyfriends. Yaser Said has never been caught. Islam Said, the girls’ brother, has apparently gone to Egypt, where he has been sending a series of unhinged comments to the blog Combatting Moonbat News, threatening to murder the girls’ aunt, Gail Gartrell (whom the moronic boy addresses as “gall”). These are by no means the first of these murderous threats, but they are the latest, coming in last week:

According to a highly reputable source who was actually at this meeting, it went on till 2:45 AM and the serious issues addressed and which occurred at this ‘meeting’ was not even covered by the media. I hope to get those events written out here later tonight.

Imagine facing the overwhelming odds of fighting for equality in Islamic supremacist Saudi Arabia or in the 1960s-era white supremacist Mississippi.

These were the same odds faced by a handful of activists in challenging the estimated 600 supporters of the Islamic Saudi Academy at Northern Virginia’s Fairfax County Planning Commission on the night of March 18, 2009. Many hundreds of the Islamic Saudi Academy (ISA) supporters wore printed name tag badges reading “I Support ISA,” including ISA’s logo containing the emblem of Saudi Arabian government with its two crossed swords.

This is the same Saudi government that a few weeks ago the U.S. State Department condemned for its “significant human rights problems” in denying basic freedoms and human rights to men, women, and non-Muslims, and the same Saudi government whose courts recently sentenced a 75 year old woman to 40 lashes for “mingling” with men, and whose courts recently sentenced a pregnant gang-rape victim to 100 lashes for “adultery.”

The meeting of the Fairfax County Government Planning Commission was to consider a special exemption to a zoning regulation to allow for the building of an expansion to the Islamic Saudi Academy in Fairfax, Virginia. The Fairfax County government has been leasing space for the existing Saudi Academy facilities for years now. As a suburb of Washington DC, Fairfax, Virginia is slightly more than 20 miles away from our nation’s capital. The Islamic Saudi Academy has been frequently criticized for its reported use of textbooks promoting hate and violence, its former students associated with jihad plots, reports of negligence on reporting female child sex abuse, and ISA’s former valedictorian convicted of joining Al-Qaeda and plotting to assassinate the president.

A Canadian women who converted to Islam and joined the chorus of typical anti western, America hating hyperbole slinging useful idiot leftists and then went to Pakistan to make a propaganda film for the jihadi’s, has been kidnapped, held for ransom and claims she will be killed at the end of the month.

I do not think I will be rushing to raise money for her release given that she actually raised money for them from her comfortable Vancouver abode.

Kidnapped Canadian says she will be killed

A Canadian woman being held hostage in northern Pakistan says her captors are planning to behead her at the end of the month if a ransom isn’t paid. In a video posted on the Globe and Mail’s website, a pale and haggard-looking Beverly Giesbrecht, 52, begins to cry as says her “time is very short.” “I’m going to be killed. As you can see,” said Giesbrecht pointing at a long knife hanging behind her, “I’m going to be beheaded just like the Polish engineer (Piotr Stanczak), probably by the end of the month.” The former West Vancouver resident was kidnapped in November along with three guides. Giesbrecht, who’s now known as Khadija Abdul Qahaar after converting to Islam, was taken while travelling to record video for a British journalist.

Last September, a Vancouver woman named Beverly Giesbrecht published her personal reflections on the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.

Giesbrecht, 52, used the opportunity to celebrate militant Islam. She talked about the “good news” that the Taliban in Afghanistan were killing NATO soldiers and she praised the “Iraqi Resistance” for killing Americans. The real enemy, she said, was “Zionist-controlled America,” and she called upon the Muslim Ummah — the worldwide Islamic community — to form a united front.

Canadian security officials undoubtedly read Giesbrecht’s manifesto, because they would have been monitoring her Internet site, one of the few openly pro-Islamist sites operating out of Canada. Giesbrecht has exactly the biography that would draw the attention of intelligence authorities.

According to her writings, she was ignorant of Islam until 9/11. The attacks captivated her, and she started living on the Internet, reading everything she could about al-Qaeda. “I remember sitting at five in the morning, exhausted … staring at the face of Osama bin Laden,” she wrote. “This man does not have the face of a cold-blooded killer.”

She started travelling to Egypt, Malaysia and other parts of the Muslim world, eventually converting to Islam and adopting the name Khadija Abdul Qahaar. There is no evidence that she has ever committed a crime, or is capable of doing so, but her evolution into a jihadist spokeswoman was a textbook narrative of radicalization.

Shortly after Giesbrecht wrote her reflections on 9/11 last fall, she was kidnapped near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, where she had gone to meet with and film the Taliban. The Taliban proved more unwelcoming than she expected, and this week a video surfaced of her pleading for help.

Convicted terrorist has arrow pointing to Mecca on cell floor

OTTAWA – The first Canadian charged under the new Criminal Code provisions of the Anti-terrorism Act was sentenced Thursday to an additional 10 1/2 years in prison for his role in helping a group of Islamic extremists plot to bomb London nightclubs and other targets in 2004.

In an Ottawa courtroom, Ontario Superior Court Justice Douglas Rutherford sentenced Mohammed Momin Khawaja, 29, to another decade and a half behind bars, spread over convictions on seven charges – on top of the five years he has already spent in jail awaiting trial and sentencing. Five of the convictions were charges of participating in, contributing, financing, and facilitating terror, while two other convictions pertained to Khawaja’s developing and possessing an explosive device – the so-called Hi-Fi Digimonster.

“He said he wanted to come home. I was hoping we could bring him home,” his mother Azra, who visited Khawaja behind bars earlier this week, told Canwest News Service on Thursday.

She and her husband, Mahboob, had hoped their son would be sentenced to time served for spending four years before conviction.

Khawaja told his parents he wanted them to pick up some honey, good meat, and the final episode of the Star Wars saga – just some of things he hasn’t had in jail, where he’s been a model inmate known for staying out of trouble. He spent his days working out to MuchMusic videos and praying on his mats. (There’s a painted arrow on the floor of his cell pointing to Mecca.)

“There’s a lot of new movies he hasn’t seen,” she said. “We still pray and hope he gets out,” said his mother, who hopes her son will appeal the conviction.

Khawaja’s lawyer, Lawrence Greenspon, said he was disappointed with the ruling, and will be considering both a conviction and a sentencing appeal over the coming days.

“It’s a long ways from what the Crown attorney was seeking, thankfully, but I still think the sentence is excessive,” he told reporters.

Assistant Crown attorney David McKercher acknowledged the sentence was lighter than he had requested, and said the Crown “will be considering the decision carefully before we consider further options.”

In sentencing hearings, Greenspon had asked the judge to impose what amounted to ‘time served’ in custody, while the Crown had demanded two life terms. Khawaja was convicted in October of participating in, contributing to, financing and facilitating a group of British Islamist extremists plotting to bomb London and other British targets in 2004, and to wage a wider Islamic jihad against the West.

In court Thursday, Rutherford said Khawaja’s actions “do not warrant being sentenced to life.” While Khawaja will be eligible for parole after serving half his sentence, Rutherford declined to give Khawaja an “arithmetical” reduction in his sentence by giving him extra credit for the time he has already spent in jail, pointing out that the only three words Khawaja uttered in court were “no” and “not guilty.”

Indeed, Khawaja, who appeared Thursday in a navy pin-striped suit and white starched shirt, hair slicked back to the nape of his neck, beard trimmed, appeared expressionless as the sentence was delivered.

Rutherford also chastised Khawaja’s parents, who submitted written statements before sentencing that painted “a normal family situation,” the judge said.

“There was no mention of the array of military-style rifles, the crates of ammunition, the other weapons, the projectile-pocked human target on the basement wall (of the family’s Ottawa home). . . . It is impossible to think that the other members of the family were oblivious to Momin’s preoccupation with, and proclivity to participate in, violent jihad.”

Though he never testified, Khawaja’s defence was that he wanted to aid, and someday join, Muslim insurgents fighting Canadian and other NATO troops in Afghanistan, but was unwittingly duped into designing and building electronic triggers – nicknamed the Hi-Fi Digimonster – to detonate bombs the British group secretly planned to explode in and around London.

Prosecutors produced no direct evidence Khawaja knew of the plot to detonate 600 kilograms of ammonium nitrate fertilizer at public sites in and around London, the focal point of the prosecution’s case. As a result, Rutherford acquitted him of two terrorism charges related to the Hi-Fi Digimonster, which he was building in his family’s home.

Instead, the judge convicted him on two general Criminal Code counts of developing and possessing an explosive device to detonate improvised explosive devices, “whenever, wherever,” in support of terrorism.

As this is the first sentencing under the post-9/11 anti-terror laws, Rutherford had no previous Canadian cases to use as sentencing benchmarks.

Art Cockfield, professor of Law at Queen’s University, thought the sentence was a fair one. “It is a lengthy one, given the fact that none of these acts came to fruition. But I do think we need to send a signal to other possible terrorists that they shouldn’t get involved in these activities.”

Despite the fact that the four British members of the plot were sentenced to indeterminate life sentences, Cockfield does not think this suggests Canada or Rutherford are comparatively “soft on terror.”

“I think that, both to the English bench and the English people, the threat of terrorism seems much more real, because they have been subjected to terrorist attacks. That might explain the harsher sentence,” he said.

In general, Cockfield thinks it’s important to not inadvertently turn people such as Khawaja into martyrs.

“I subscribe to the theory that they are misguided youth that have been inappropriately radicalized. That is not to say we should be lenient, but we should not demonize them.”

The London plot ringleader, Omar Khyam, and four others, were sentenced to indeterminate life sentences for conspiring to cause explosions likely to endanger life. None will be considered for parole before they have served at least 17 1/2 years, and some “may never be released,” the British trial judge said.

A comparative domestic case might be the 1980s urban guerrilla group Direct Action, also known as the Squamish Five.

They blew up a BC Hydro substation, firebombed a Vancouver video store, and, in October 1982, bombed the property of Toronto’s Litton Industries, which produced guidance components for U.S. cruise missiles. Ten people were injured and the plant sustained $3.8 million in damage.

Leader Anne Hanson received a life term. Four others got sentences ranging from six to 22 years.

Meanwhile, the Front de liberation du Quebec’s Paul Rose served 11 years for his part in the 1970 killing of Pierre Laporte, Quebec’s labour minister at the time. His younger brother, Jacques, served five years of an eight-year sentence.

When the five FLQ “Liberation Cell” kidnappers of British trade commissioner James Cross returned to Canada from exile in Cuba and France, they received sentences ranging up to three years, though most were released in a matter of months.
