Senate hearings on Iran, a study in contrasts.

Here is a clip of Dr. Aural Braun who spoke yesterday, February 15th at a Sentate committee hearing on policy towards Iran at this time.

This was the best of the speakers I am reliably informed however you can see the entire thing here. All told, it is about 90 minutes.

What is concerning is that the first speaker, Dr. Hassan-Yari, who lectures at a major Canadian Military academy, Royal Military College of Canada, and was using sophomoric moral equivalence. The kind that no student should be allowed to graduate grade 9 from, without being able to see through and defeat.

He actually said that Iran calls the US “The Great Satan” and the US calls Iran, “Axis of Evil” with the intention of attempting to create the impression of moral equivalence.

This is at the very best the kind of intellectual laziness that should cause terror in that it is the voice that trains future military leaders but is more likely an excellent example of the kind of infiltration and political correctness former CIA trainer Clare Lopez has spoken about numerous times in terms of US military teachers and intelligence trainers, most notably at the CIA itself.

Ten years later, what kind of ally is Canada?

The approaching tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks marks a critical point in Canada-United States relations. This milestone should remind us that allies’ support and confidence are decisive to a country’s survival and prosperity. In Canada’s case, prosperity and public safety require access to U.S. borders and to American diplomatic, military and intelligence channels. This access depends on U.S. confidence in Canada as a security partner.

Well before 9/11, I testified before a congressional subcommittee concerned about the Canadian Security Intelligence Service’s 1998 warning that more terror groups were in Canada than in any other country, except perhaps the U.S. Imagine American officials’ discomfort with today’s Canadian security problems.

Canadian-based Sikh extremists caused the world’s biggest pre-9/11 aviation-terror disaster, the 1985 Air India bombing. Today, India’s security officials privately regard Canada – not India – as a font of international Sikh extremism.

CSIS director Richard Fadden warned of illicit foreign-influence operations in Canada. One or two provincial cabinets could be penetrated, he said, as might local governments. Yet MPs shy away from asking whether Canada’s politicobureaucratic system is infiltrated.

American congressional leaders recently stopped Chinese telecom giant Huawei’s plan to buy into the U.S. market. Huawei denies links with Beijing, but the company partnered with sensitive Canadian telecom systems and got a $6.5 million Ontario grant without debate. Now Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird dubs America’s strategic Chinese foe an “ally” and declares unreconstructed Beijing the political equal of democratic post-war Germany and post-Soviet Russia.

Canada’s growing Islamist threat is becoming an export, and American security sources say they know it.

Australians to be healed from ‘Islamophobia’ by head of global Islamic organisation

This week Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd has invited Professor Ekmelledin Ihsanoglu[sic], the Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to discuss “Transition and Change: The OIC and the Islamic World”

Events take place on February 15th and 16th at the National Press Club of Australia and at Griffith University, Brisbane. Following similar events in Europe and Washington, Mr Rudd’s visitor is here to educate and help us overcome “Islamophobia” in Australia.

The OIC, which represents 56 Islamic states, makes up the largest voting bloc of the UN.

United in their effort to limit critical discussion of the Islamic religion and sharia law, these countries refuse to sign the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights. OIC members construed the ‘Cairo Declaration’, in which human rights are subject to interpretation by Islamic clergy and sharia law. The OIC is headquartered in Saudi Arabia, a feudal monarchy renown for violation of basic human rights under strict sharia law.

The feigned concern of the OIC with discrimination against Islam and more notably views not supportive of Islam is in contrast to the violent intolerance experienced by non-Muslim minorities in many Islamic countries. Indigenous religious minorities, which are not afforded the same respect, recognition or equality demanded by the OIC for Muslim immigrants in the West.

Author and human rights activist Ayan Hirsi Ali ‘s recent article ‘The Global War on Christians in the Muslim World’ highlights “… an unrecognised battle costing thousands of lives.” With these facts in mind, there are serious questions democratic governments should be asking the OIC, before taking advice from Professor Ihsanoglu.

Q Society appeals to Mr Rudd to show courage and openly address this discrepancy and the discrimination against non-Muslims, evident in almost every OIC country.

Vilifying critics of Islam and sharia practices as ‘islamophobic’ is in fact aiding and abetting those who seek to silence the debate about the rise of Islamic sharia, both in the West and in the once secular countries of the OIC.

Kevin Rudd, our erstwhile Prime Minister and current Foreign Minister, has a bit of a reputation as a grandstander. The current view is that he’s bucking for a seat with the UN (Security Council, no less – even temporary is good to this fellow), and a part of his sleazing towards that goal is sucking up to the OIC.

He’s given a lot of money to help the less fortunate in countries other than Oz, which you’d expect as Foreign Minister. But…

Ali Dizaei: Met Police commander jailed for corruption

I have an idea. Let’s import millions of people from vastly different cultures, many of whom wish to destroy us and the bulk of which hold is in varying degrees of contempt, then give as many as we can high office.

I can’t see anything going wrong with that at all.

Metropolitan Police commander Ali Dizaei has been jailed for three years for misconduct in a public office and perverting the course of justice.

He attacked Waad al-Baghdadi in Kensington in 2008 and then inflicted injuries on himself in order to frame him, Southwark Crown Court heard.

Dizaei, of Acton, told the court he felt threatened by Mr al-Baghdadi.

He was first convicted in 2010 and served 15 months in prison before his conviction was quashed on appeal.

‘Deplorable corruption’

BBC Home Affairs correspondent Danny Shaw said it was likely Dizaei would be released after three months due to the time he has already spent in jail.

Radical Muslim group to launch TV station

The Islamic Central Council of Switzerland (ICCS) has announced plans to set up an internet TV channel, while it is also in talks with various companies to provide its members with a Swiss-Muslim discount card.

 

The new TV studios, due to become operational this summer, will play host to a political show, a weekly series on a range of topics seen from a Muslim perspective, and a sermon series, newspaper SonntagsZeitung reports. Sermons are to be given mainly in German, but also in Arabic, Bosnian and Albanian. German subtitles will also be available.

The ICCS is also working towards providing its members with a card that will give discounts of up to 15 percent at a variety of outlets including fitness centres, restaurants and shops.

Health insurance fund Helsana has also confirmed that it is in talks with the organization to give discounts to ICCS members. ICCS president, Nicolas Blancho, is expecting Helsana to give a reduction of 10 percent on insurance premiums, Tages Anzeriger reported on Sunday.

The ICCS is considered by many experts to be a fundamentalist organization, but according to the Tages Anzeiger there is discontent brewing among its members over the leadership style. Blancho in particular is facing criticism for not practising what he preaches.

Council members who do not positively endorse new articles appearing on social media sites such as Facebook would face disciplinary action if they fail to click “like” within 24 hours of the article being posted by the ICCS, Sonntags Zeitung reported.

Muslim Party Seeks Power In Dutch Parliament

The Dutch Muslim Party has announced plans to seek seats in the Dutch Parliament. The party already has a hold in regional governments in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and other Dutch cities.

 

 

The Partij Voor Moslim Nederland (Party for Muslim Netherlands), as it calls itself when it is not referring to itself as The Dutch Muslim Party (note the strong differences in meaning), campaigns on an anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage, and anti-discrimination platform. It hopes to take part in Parliamentary elections in 2015. Among its principles:

  1. Criminalization of blasphemy
  2. Free speech within limitations:  speech that can be seen as insulting or offensive on religious grounds will be prosecuted.
  3. Damage or destruction of holy texts for any religion to be criminalized by law.
  4. Members of the party can also be non-Muslims.
  5. Women and men are to be seen as equal under the law.
  6. The party is to be based on the Islamic principle of Shura
  7. All troops must be withdrawn from Iraq and Afghanistan
  8. Turkey must immediately be made a member of the EU
  9. Support to Israel must be stopped
  10. Zero-tolerance for all drugs, including marijuana (currently tolerated under Dutch law)
  11. No bans shall be set against the current practice of importing poorly-educated women as brides for Dutch Muslim men

A new pamphlet outlining the party’s vision is to be published by the end of this month.

Oklahoma Sharia law ban ‘unconstitutional’, court rules

The US state of Oklahoma has been prevented from introducing an amendment that would have barred its courts from considering Islamic law in judgements.

A federal court of appeals upheld a district judge’s decision to block the implementation of the amendment.

The ban on Islamic law was approved by 70% of voters in a referendum in 2010.

But it was challenged by a Muslim community leader who said the amendment violated his constitutional right to freedom of religion.

Muneer Awad, the head of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in Oklahoma, had filed a suit saying that the amendment would affect every aspect of his life, including his will and testament.

‘Pre-emptive strike’The amendment read in part: “The courts shall not look to the legal precepts of other nations or cultures. Specifically, the courts shall not consider international law or Sharia law”.

The author of the amendment, Republican state representative Rex Duncan, had argued that it was not intended as an attack on Muslims, but was rather a “pre-emptive strike” preventing the application of Sharia law. Continue Reading →

Many Brits would prefer their meat to be clearly marked as Halal if they were being served it in a restaurant, according to a recent poll. The issue drew headlines this week after it emerged that sporting venues across London regularly serve Halal products to customers without informing them, either for religious or cost reasons.

  • 73% of the British population think that restaurants and caterers should be required to label Halal meat if they serve it
  • 81% of the 60+ age group think that Halal food should be labelled compared to a smaller 57% of 18-24s who think labelling should be a requirement

Respondents to a separate poll are divided over how humane they consider Halal meat. ‘Consumers should be informed of what they are paying for and be provided with a choice,’ said one respondent, while the morality of Halal meat prompted another panellist to say ‘Halal is more compassionate than stunning ‘. Another, however, called it ‘a cruel practice’.

Halal meat is defined as coming from an animal that has been slaughtered by a swift cut to the animal’s neck allowing its blood to drain out, as opposed to initially stunning the animal using an electric bolt prior to slaughter: the conventional British method. Halal meat is primarily eaten by Muslims, as Islam proscribes the consumption of blood or pork and stipulates this method of slaughter. Some Muslims also believe that a prayer to Allah must be offered prior to slaughter.

Religious response

Religious sentiments were also stirred up by the story’s news coverage. One respondent argued against Halal meat by saying ‘This is a Christian country and Christian laws should apply,’ while another described it as ‘Islamification by the back door.’ Another respondent, however, took a more critical view of the media coverage and said ‘This is a scare story, designed to promote the new labelling initiative in a particularly nasty, xenophobic way.’

Iran seeking to expand influence in Latin America

Iran is quietly seeking to expand its ties with Latin America in what U.S. officials and regional experts say is an effort to circumvent economic sanctions and gain access to much-needed markets and raw materials.The new diplomatic offensive, which comes amid rising tensions with Washington and European powers, includes a four-nation swing through South and Central America this month by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. His government has vowed to increase its economic, political and military influence in the United States’ back yard.

The visit reinforces recent commitments by Iran to invest millions of dollars in economic development projects for the region, from a mining joint venture in Ecuador to factories for petrochemicals and small-arms ammunition in Venezuela.

Iran has also dramatically expanded its diplomatic missions throughout the hemisphere and dispatched members of its elite Quds Force — the military unit U.S. officials in October linked to a foiled assassination plot in Washington — to serve in its embassies, U.S. officials and Iran experts say.

The importance of Ahmadinejad’s visit was underscored last week by Iran’s state-owned Press TV, which said promotion of “all-out cooperation with Latin American countries is among the top priorities of the Islamic Republic’s foreign policy.”

UPDATE: Muslim leaders boycott New York City mayor’s event

NEW YORK (Reuters) – More than a dozen Muslim community leaders boycotted an interfaith breakfast organized by Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday to protest reported police surveillance of Muslim areas since the September 11, 2001, attacks.

In an open letter to Bloomberg, the leaders accused the mayor of ignoring concerns that the New York Police Department has been using racial profiling and violating civil rights in its anti-terrorism surveillance programs.

“We believe with heartfelt conviction that during times when a community’s rights are being flagrantly violated its leaders cannot in good conscience appear at a public gathering with the government official who is ultimately responsible and smile for the cameras as if all is well, when we know full well that it is not,” the letter said.

The letter cited a series of articles earlier this year by The Associated Press that alleged that police, at times in cooperation with the CIA, infiltrated New York mosques, Muslim bookshops and other Islamic businesses and institutions to gather intelligence without specific evidence of any criminal activity.

The letter was signed by 15 leaders of Muslim organizations based in New York City who said they were turning down their breakfast invitation, as well as the leaders of several dozen other faith organizations and civil rights groups. Continue Reading →

Detouring Around Democracy

Up until recently Switzerland was a bastion of direct democracy in Europe, with its established institution of referendums providing the means for its citizens to initiate or approve all significant changes of law at the federal level.

Times have changed, however, and the Swiss have lost much of their sovereignty to the European Union — without their consent. The following guest-essay fromKitman details the latest revelations showing how democracy was stolen from Switzerland.

Echoes from the Minarets: The Discreet Evasion of Swiss Democracy

The “anti-minaret initiative” and the “initiative for deportation of criminal foreigners” served as clear reminders to the Swiss establishment that manipulation of the mass media had become an insufficient tool for controlling public opinion. It was therefore not overly surprising when a first step towards the assignment of new powers to the Swiss federal court was approved by the national assembly a few weeks ago. By allowing the federal court to “test the constitutionality” of federal laws, center-left politicians obviously hope the courts can save them from future unpleasantness. Luzi Stamm from the Swiss People’s Party rightly condemned the suggested changes as a clear “step towards the abolition of direct democracy”, whereas the Green party socialists, thrilled by the taste of judicial supremacy, exclaimed “Switzerland IS the constitution!”

Interestingly, WeltWoche revealed yesterday that the very same federal court, along with recently-departed Foreign Minister Calmy-Rey and Integration Minister Johann Schneider-Amman, have been engaged in a sinister plot to surrender Swiss sovereignty to EU courts without having to ask or tell the Swiss people about it.

Confronted with the difficult task of submitting to EU demands without anybody noticing, the federal court, in cooperation with Daniel Thürer (Swiss delegate of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance [ECRI]), developed the legal equivocations needed to make an actual referendum “unnecessary”. Among other things, the Federal court came up with following gem for insertion into the legal treaty:

“Swiss courts duly take the EU adjudication into account”.

Because the courts have already been doing this for years, that phrase, if inserted correctly, would “strengthen an interpretative mechanism” which according to the federal court would imply that “only given an imperative reason may Swiss courts deviate from EU rulings”. As seen below, Daniel Thürer went somewhat further in his arbitration, suggesting whole new EU agencies inside Switzerland with so-called “powers of co-determination” with the said federal court.

Discrete Evasion

[T]he demands from Brussels go far beyond a modification of the bilateral agreement; in fact, they imply the annulment of the agreement. Today both parties to the agreement guard and implement it independently. And disagreements are cleared in mixed committees. However, with the “institutional link-up” demanded from Brussels, the central legal monitoring apparatus of the EU becomes sole interpreter of contracts and their implementation. Foreign judges would thus preside over the legality of [Swiss] measures for controlling migration. And since the European judges in their verdicts notoriously support free [international] contracting over all protective measures, this should cause alarm among trade unionists. The long-term consequences to all contracting are at this time not even possible to estimate.

The Swiss “silver bullet” of bilateral agreements has come to a dead end. In spite of this the Swiss Federal Council are determined to push on, and have thus begun to move the scenery around, in an attempt to disguise the fact that they have deviated from this path and embarked on a different course for EU accession. As former Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey once put it: “We are working on creative solutions.”

However, in these serious matters the creativity does not involve originality or ministerial brilliance. They concern the best way to deceive the people about the true extent of their lost sovereignty.

The preparations were made in an “arbitration” of the Europhile expert in constitutional law Daniel Thürer, professor emeritus Zürich University, along with an “advisory opinion” of the Swiss federal court. The Federal Council has refused to publish both of these papers in an attempt to conceal what they have been hiding all along. In order to ensure public access to this informationWeltwoche has made the documents available for internet download (links at the end of this report).

Daniel Thürer advised against a direct submission to the EU courts, because this would require a referendum, which currently “is sure to have a negative outcome”. He therefore proposes three ways to coat the capitulation and stamp out democracy:
