Forbidden Love. Taboos and Fear among Muslim Girls

A couple of articles that deal with the issue of Turkish girls in Germany who wish to live a free Western life.
The first is this video below which is quite interesting and then an article from Der Spiegel:

Forbidden Love

Taboos and Fear among Muslim Girls

By Güner Balci

Kathrin Harms / Zeitenspiegel / DER SPIEGEL

Young Muslim women are often forced to lead double lives in Europe. They have sex in public restrooms and stuff mobile phones in their bras to hide their secret existences from strict families. They are often forbidden from visiting gynecologists or receiving sex ed. In the worst cases, they undergo hymen reconstruction surgery, have late-term abortions or even commit suicide.

Gülay has heard it from her mother so many times: An unmarried woman who has lost her virginity might as well be a whore.

Gülay, 22, lives in Berlin’s Neukölln, a district that is home to a high number of Muslim immigrants, and has little in common with the cliché of the “girl with the headscarf.” She wears tight jeans, low-cut blouses and has long hair that she doesn’t keep covered. She is self-confident and looks people in the eye. Gülay plans to begin a training program to work as an airport ground hostess next year. At first glance, she comes across as a poster child for successful integration.

Nevertheless, she is adamantly opposed to seeing her name in print, just as she would never meet a journalist for an interview in one of the hookah bars in her neighborhood that are so popular among Arab and Turkish immigrants. She is worried that someone could overhear her talking about her family’s strict morals, and about the rigid code of honor in her social environment that prevents girls from having sex before marriage and forbids them from having boyfriends.

Gülay is thinking about how best to sum up her dilemma. She nervously stirs her tea before launching into a litany of complaints. “The boys can screw around as much as they want, but if a girl does it she can expect to be shot,” she says. “That’s just sick.” She first had sex five years ago, and it completely changed her life. Since then, she has been deathly afraid of being branded by her family as a dishonorable girl — or, worst yet, punished and cast out.

A Constant Tug-of-War

Hardly any other issue is as fraught with prohibition and fear among Germany’s Muslim immigrants as sex. Many Muslim families adhere to moral values from a pre-modern era, and the separation of the sexes affects almost all aspects of daily life. At the same time, young female immigrants are faced with the temptations of a free life unrestrained by religious and cultural traditions. Their daily lives are a constant tug-of-war between two value systems.

Many of them suffer from this contradiction, and some crack under the strain. Doctors and social workers report on desperate young women coming to them with requests to reconstruct the hymen or perform late-term abortions. The elevated risk of suicide among young immigrant women even prompted Berlin’s Charité Hospital to establish a suicide prevention initiative for women from Turkish immigrant families. In a multi-year study, the group hopes to discover why the suicide rate within this population is apparently twice as high as it is among ethnic German women of the same age.

The consequences of living this double life have been poorly studied. Almost no governmental and non-governmental organizations, from family and education ministries to immigration authorities and self-help groups, can offer reliable figures or well-founded conclusions on the issue.

“The problems these women face are caused by the patriarchal and traditional structures in families,” says Berlin’s commissioner for integration and migration, Günter Piening. According to Piening, youth welfare agencies, government offices and schools have been educated on the issue for years, “but a lot remains to be done.”

Being Home by 8 p.m.

Of course, these problems do not exclusively affect Muslim groups. Young women in other social groups also suffer as a result of strict moral codes and domestic violence. And there are also Muslim families in which the daughters lead a modern, self-determined life, a fact that Piening and other politicians are quick to point out.

But doctors, social workers and the operators of crisis hotlines and youth clubs often experience a different reality. They note that, like in Turkey, equal rights are usually only experienced in families in academic or artistic circles. Otherwise, strict traditions dictate that fathers and brothers control the lives of their sisters and daughters.

This helps to explain why many girls with Turkish and Arab origins are so candid about their double lives, but only as long as they are not named.

One of the places where they are more likely to speak their minds is a Berlin youth club for girls from devout families, which is strictly off-limits to boys — the perfect place for Gülay and her girlfriends to meet. Otherwise, they are not permitted to go out. Going to a party is tantamount to turning tricks, and girls who are not home by 8 p.m., when shops close, need a good excuse to explain their tardiness.

The only freedom these girls enjoy is at school, while shopping or in youth clubs. “When I go home I hide my mobile phone in my underwear,” says Sibel, giggling as she extracts a mobile phone from her bra. “I’m not allowed to have a mobile phone or talk to boys. What else should I do?”

Twenty Minutes in a Public Bathroom

A small group of teenagers has congregated in the youth club kitchen. The girls are talking about sex, and almost all of them have something to say, something about their families that upset them. “The first thing our parents think is that we’re up to no good,” says one of the girls. Nevertheless, most have boyfriends, and even a visit to a gynecologist would be unthinkable for many of these girls, for fear of being spotted by relatives who would automatically conclude that they are there to get the pill — and are therefore sluts. “There are girls who would rather die from the pain,” says Gülay.

Sex education in school is also taboo for many young Muslim girls, says Gülay, who was the only one of 15 Muslim girls in her grade who attended the classes. Her fellow female students from the most devout families, says Gülay, “asked me all kinds of questions about how to use a condom and how to get the pill. Some of them didn’t know anything at all.” And some, according to Gülay, believed that all they had to do after having sex was to rinse themselves thoroughly with water. Others, especially “headscarf girls,” only engage in anal sex with their boyfriends, believing that in this way they can protect their “honor,” says Gülay.

Taking a boy home would almost be suicidal, say the girls at the youth club. The thought alone is so unheard-of that it triggers hysterical laughter. They rattle off the places where they have their rendezvous: hallways, park benches or the public restroom on Boddin Square in Neukölln, where person can get 20 minutes of privacy for 50 cents. Some girls are lucky enough to have a boyfriend with his own car or who can at least afford to pay €20 ($27) for a hotel room.

Connecting with a Hotline

And what happens then?

Papatya, a Berlin crisis center and shelter for girls of Turkish origin, provides neither an address nor a telephone number on his website. For more than 20 years, Papatya has been offering protection and shelter to young immigrant girls and women fleeing domestic violence. The organization is careful to keep its identity and whereabouts a secret. When it comes to injured family honor, anyone who so much as helps the girls can quickly get into danger.

Those who want to contact Papatya are asked to leave a number on an emergency hotline. A short time later, a social worker or a psychologist calls the girls.

One of the staff members at the center is a woman named Leila. In the eight years she has been working at Papatya, she has heard the same complaints again and again. Her list runs the gamut from girls being kept at home and barred from going to school to forced marriage and acts of violence committed on behalf of parents. In her counseling sessions, the girls repeatedly talk about their virginity, and about the fact that their happiness, or lack thereof, can depend solely on a few millimeters of skin.

Arizona “honor killing” trial set to start

By David Schwartz REUTERS.COM

PHOENIX | Sun Jan 23, 2011 9:08am EST

PHOENIX (Reuters) – An Iraqi immigrant is due to begin trial on Monday to face charges he murdered his daughter by running her over with a Jeep because he believed she was too Westernized.

Opening arguments are scheduled to begin in Maricopa County Superior Court in the case of Faleh Hassan Almaleki, accused of what prosecutors say was an October 2009 “honor killing” over his daughter’s behavior.

Police say he crashed his Jeep Laredo into his 20 year-old daughter, Noor Almaleki, and her boyfriend’s mother, as the two walked across a parking lot in the Phoenix suburb of Peoria. The daughter died two weeks later; the mother recovered.

The 50-year-old Almaleki faces life in prison if convicted by the 12-member jury.

He is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and two counts of hit and run.

A spokesman for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office declined comment on Friday. Jeff Kirchler, Almaleki’s public defender, did not respond to a message left with his office.

Almaleki told detectives and witnesses that he was angry at his daughter because she was “too Westernized,” and he felt she was defying Iraqi and Muslim values, said Jay Davies, a spokesman for the Peoria Police Department.

The daughter had shunned an arranged marriage, and was living with her boyfriend and his mother, police said.

The United Nations has documented honor killings in Egypt, Iraq, Turkey and other countries, but the practice of killing a family member — often a woman or a girl — over perceived shame is relatively rare in the United States.

Following his daughter’s death, Almaleki fled to Mexico and later to London, where he was taken into custody upon his arrival. He is being held on $5 million bail.

Last updated at 7:56 AM on 16th October 2010

A pregnant woman has died after being found on fire in her garden.

Neighbours said the 23-year-old woman – named locally as Asiyah Khan – arrived in the country earlier this year and had an arranged marriage.

She was rarely seen outside the house, which she shared with her husband Naveed, mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

Police were investigating the incident yesterday and it was not clear whether Mrs Khan had set herself on fire or had been set alight by someone else. No one has been arrested in connection with her death.

Emergency services were called to the residential street in Bradford at 7.15pm on Thursday, but Mrs Khan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbour Debbie Gregoire said the family returned home from a shopping trip to find the house locked. Naveed Khan climbed over the gate to find his wife’s body in the back garden. Continue Reading →

More cultural enrichment in Canada: the importation of polygamy, child brides, forced marriages

Polygamy, child brides pose problems for immigration officials

By BRIAN LILLEY, Parliamentary Bureau

Last Updated: October 12, 2010 4:13pm

OTTAWA – Forced marriages, child brides, polygamy and arranged marriages between first cousins are some of the problems that Canadian immigration officials in Pakistan have to deal with.

The revelations are contained in a 26-page report prepared by Canadian officials working out of the immigration and visa office in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. The report was obtained by immigration lawyer Richard Kurland through access to information legislation and supplied to QMI Agency.

“With few exceptions, the Islamabad spousal reunification programme involves Muslim proxy marriages arranged by the families, the vast majority of which take place between first cousins,” reads the report.

According to Kurland, polygamy is most common among wealthy Pakistani families trying to immigrant to Canada. Canadian officials often won’t reject an application just because a man has more than one wife, Kurland said.

“They say we can’t do this because you are polygamists so you have to divorce some, keep one and work it out domestically,” Kurland said. Kurland told QMI that often second or third wives will be sponsored into Canada as skilled workers for a business or as a maid for the household.

As for first cousins marrying, while the practice is not common in Canada due to a higher risk of birth defects, marrying your cousin is legal in this country.

“Marriages that are legal in Canada are legal for the purposes of immigration and sponsorship,” said Alykhan Velshi, a spokesman for Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.

Tazeen Ahmad, a British woman of Pakistani descent, produced a documentary earlier this year for Channel 4 called Dispatches: When Cousins Marry.

Ahmad documented the cultural reasons for the practice among British Pakistanis as well as the problems, such as a high rate of recessive gene disorders.

Four guilty of bungled ‘honour killings’

Four men were convicted today of murdering a couple in a bungled honour killing arson attack.

Abdullah Mohammed, 41, and his wife, Aysha Mohammed, 39, were overcome by smoke and fumes after petrol was poured through their letterbox and set alight.

Hisamuddin Ibrahim, 21, wanted to punish a man who was having an affair with his married sister and ordered three men to cause a blaze at his terraced home in the early hours while he was asleep.

But the wrong address was targeted as the blaze was started at the home of the Mohammeds in 175 London Road in Blackburn, Lancashire - instead of the intended address of 135 London Road.

A jury at Preston Crown Court took just 90 minutes following a six-week trial to convict Ibrahim, Habib Iqbal, Sadek Miah and Mohammed Miah (no relation) of their murders. Continue Reading →

“Normal” Domestic Violence in Morocco is a Crime in the United States

By Phyllis Chesler from News Real Blog:

So sayeth the Superior Court of New Jersey Appellate Division.

On July 31, 2008, a couple was married by arrangement in Morocco when the bride was 17 years old. They moved to Bayonne, New Jersey, where the new husband found work as an accountant. The husband’s mother came to live with them.

On November 1st of that year, “acts of domestic abuse” commenced. The young girl finally called the police who, on November 22, 2008 (three weeks later) were still able to photograph numerous, visible bruises all over her body, including on her breasts. Her first punishment session lasted for one hour, during which time she cried all the time. This did not stop her husband. He said that he was doing this “to correct her.” The second time, he attacked both her breasts and genitalia, including pulling her pubic hair. Her vagina was very red and swollen—and that is when he administered his ultimate “pedagogical” punishment: He raped her. In addition, on a separate occasion, he slapped her face, “causing her lip to swell and bleeding to occur.”  At that time, she escaped “without shoes or proper clothing” through a window and was taken to a hospital by the police.

Honour killings and Canada

It seems that Canada had yet another attempt at a Muslim honour killing of a daughter. The good news is Canada’s clear, unmitigated, non-politically-corrected, not-culturally-relativist (even if the good minister for women’s affairs cannot pronounce that word properly) policy making it perfectly clear that killing people is unacceptable and being a matter of culture or religion does not make it OK.

And below, the statement from the good minister for women’s affairs. As usual for these times, it takes a conservative to set truly liberal policies.

Divorce Sharia style

Thanks again to KitmanTV the premiere finder of all videos that actually matter, here is another channel Four documentary of tremendous importance. Remember #4 also is the UK TV channel that made the excellent and important document, ‘Hidden Mosque’ which revealed how large British mosques, some of which are recipients of huge government money for ‘multi-faith outreach programs’ were in fact teaching hatred and intolerance to all who they could reach.

Here is a new report on sharia law in England which references the above documentary, again thanks to Kitman:

Sharia Law in Britain – A threat to "One law for All" [Jihad against Women]

Sharia Law For Non-Muslims

Sharia Law For Non-Muslims  From Bill Warner’s Political Islam

CHAPTER 4 – FAMILY LAW

ISLAMIC SCHOLARS CLAIM: The perfect Islamic family law is sacred law since it is based upon the words of Allah in the glorious Koran and the Sunna of Mohammed. All other laws are man-made and must submit to the will of Allah; therefore, only Sharia law is suitable for Muslims. For Muslims to be ruled by Kafir laws is an abomination.

THE SHARIA:

m3.13 Guardians are of two types, those who may compel their female charges to marry someone, and those who may not.
m6.10 It is unlawful for a free man to marry more than four women.
m8.2 A guardian may not marry his prepubescent daughter to someone for less than the amount typically received as marriage payment by similar brides

ADULTERY

[Bukhari 3,38,508] Mohammed said, “Unais, confront this man’s wife and if she admits committing adultery have her stoned to death.”

[Bukhari 8,82,803] Ali had a woman stoned to death on a Friday and said, “I have punished her as Mohammed would have.”

ml0.4 The husband may forbid his wife to leave the home. But if one of her relatives dies, it is preferable to let her leave to visit them.
m5.0 conjugal rights, the wife’s marital obligations
m5.1 It is obligatory for a woman to let her husband have sex with her immediately when:
(a) he asks her
(b) at home
(c) and she can physically endure it

[Abu Dawud 11, 2138; 2139] Muawiyah said: Apostle of Allah, how should we approach our wives and how should we leave them? He replied: Approach your tilth (tilth is a plowed field, a term for the vagina) when or how you will, …

The most important thing that a woman brings to the marriage is her vagina.

[Bukhari 7,62,81] Mohammed said, “The marriage vow most rightly expected to be obeyed is the husband’s right to enjoy the wife’s vagina.”

Allah curses the woman who resists sex.

[Bukhari 7,62,121] Mohammed: “If a woman refuses her husband’s request for sex, the angels will curse her through the night.”

From the Sira, we have some more about a husband’s rights:

Ishaq 957 Mohammed sent Muadh to Yemen to proselytize. While he was there he was asked what rights a husband has over the wife. He replied to the woman who asked, “If you went home and found your husband’s nose running with pus and blood and you sucked it until it was cleaned, you still would not have fulfilled your husband’s rights.”

CHILD BRIDES
Mohammed, age 51, proposed marriage to Aisha when she was six years old. Marriage to a child is Sunna.

[Bukhari 7,62,18] When Mohammed asked Abu Bakr for Aisha’s hand in marriage, Abu replied, “But I am your brother.” Mohammed said, “You are only my brother in Allah’s religion and His Book, so it is lawful for me to marry her.”

More horror for the Copts in Egypt, abused by the system, kidnapped by Muslims

No matter how many of these stories I read, I still have to shake my head in despair and disgust that an entire nation’s machinery of state can be subverted to such a sick and twisted ideology as this. The Coptic peoples at least know enough not to say to much to the police as they, the victims, will be the recipients of police and state brutality as a consequence of daring to resist some Podunk Mustard family’s kidnap-and-rape-a-wife scheme.

After Failed Attempt of Forced Islamization Egyptian Christian Family Under Siege

Posted on 29. Jun, 2010 by Dan Wooding in Christian news

Zeenahom

A Middle Eastern journalist has revealed that “one of the most explosive issues in the relations between Christians and Muslims of Egypt is the abduction of Christian Coptic minor girls, to force them to embrace Islam, after humiliating and demeaning them psychologically and morally.”

Mary Abdelmassih, in a story for the Assyrian International News Agency (www.aina.org) said, “This dangerous phenomenon which appeared in the 1970s and which has become a lucrative business for all Muslim participants including the Egyptian State Security has been steadily on the rise, with reports surfacing weekly of several disappearances without trace of Coptic girls.”

She said that those fortunate enough to return home have talked of their ordeal. (See: www.aina.org/news/20091223164421.htm )

Abdelmassih went on to say that Zeenahom (Suzan) Nady Adly, 19-years old, “is one of the fortunate girls who was able to return home, after being drugged and abducted by Muslims to force her conversion to Islam.

“She comes from Ezbet Fanous, a small hamlet, near the town of Samalut (150 miles from Cairo), inhabited by a Coptic majority of twenty families to six Muslim ones and a Muslim mayor.”

The journalist said that according to the girl’s story, as she went out at night on Saturday, June 12, 2010, to buy soft drinks for some visitors at home, she was stopped by two Muslim men, who sprayed a substance in her face, making her lose consciousness.

“When I regained consciousness nearly two hours later, I found myself in the building of the Islamic Sharia Association in Minia, facing a shaikh [Islamic scholar] who tried to intimidate and force me to convert to Islam,” reported Freecopts advocacy in a taped interview with Zeenahom. “He tried to convince me that I would be safer marrying a Muslim, and leaving the area.”

However, the shaikh contacted State Security to tell them that he wanted her to convert, but he was told to let her go as her family was not keeping quiet.

Meanwhile, said Abdelmassih, her father, Nady Adly, had sent telegrams to all authorities and her family demonstrated in front of Samalut police headquarters asking for her return, which forced the security authorities to intervene.

“However, her ordeal continued at the police station where she was taken the next day. Zeenahom accused the village mayor Khalaf Ebdelmageed of masterminding her abduction at the hands of Muslim Sayed Khalaf and another named Taha El-Hinnawi, in exchange for money,” said the story.

Zeenahom was reported as saying, “While I was at the police station, the village mayor told me that I was too good to be a Christian. He asked me to say in the police report that I will convert to Islam, but I refused.”

The girl said that she refused to tell the police the names of her abductors, especially Sayed Khalaf, for fear of retribution. She is staying presently with her aunt.

Magdy Attia, one of the Coptic witnesses who demonstrated in front of the police station until Zeenahom was handed over to her father said that nearly two hundred Muslims, together with Sayed Khalaf’s family were there with weapons intimidating them.

“We were told that they will take Zeenahom by force to convert and marry her main abductor Sayed Khalaf, a driver by occupation, who has divorced his Muslim wife recently,” he said. “We were told Zeenahom will be Sayed’s second wife.” Continue Reading →

Globe & Mail publishes 14 page doc on the Asqa Parvez murder

This is extraordinary. The Parvez family loathed the Kuffar. For Kuffar, read Canadians. The had 8 kids of which Asqa was the youngest at 16 when she was murdered. They were all born in Pakistan, and the other Parvez children are married to 1st cousins from Pakistan. Yes all 7 of them. Asqa was also set up for a forced marriage. She declined. She was killed.

All of her sisters wear the Hijab or whatever, and Asqa refused.

All of her siblings with the exception of two, were home in their respective bedrooms during the murder. Their respective children were also at the dwelling.  This would be something like 15 people in the home during the murder by strangulation. Each was in a bedroom and ‘heard nothing’.

She had friends which were not Muslims, which enraged her father. He also threatened to send her to an Islamic school as I suspect, the public school in which she attended was not ‘suitable’. He was upset Asqa rejected the hijab and was further annoyed his daughter sought a part-time job. None of his other daughters worked and were entirely dependent upon their husbands.  After her death he phoned 911 and confessed to the murder. When police arrived at the scene, his arms were covered in blood.

For the first time in her life she went to the movies 3 days before she was murdered. Some of those who went with her, were infidels. For infidels, read Canadians.

Below, some of the article from the Globe & Mail. However click on over to read the 14 page report. Its quite something. Will be hard for the apologists to get around this clear Islamic motive for this murder of a daughter.

Here it is below:

The plight of Hindu minority in Islamic Republic of Pakistan

From Transparent Middle East:

LAHORE: Pakistani human rights activists are perturbed by the erosion of minority rights, particularly the alarming frequency with which cases of forcible conversion of the country’s Hindu nationals are surfacing.

In a latest case of forced conversion, the head of a religious seminary in Rahim Yar Khan district of Pakistani Punjab first abducted a minor Hindu girl and then stopped her from meeting her parents, saying the girl had converted to Islam and no longer wanted to meet her “non-Muslim relatives”.

According to Mehnga Ram, the father of the 13 year old Hindu girl, his daughter Radha was abducted in December 2009 and since then she is not being allowed to see her parents. “Since her abduction, we have knocked on every door stretching from the president of Pakistan to the chief minister of Punjab, but to no avail. In fact, local police, including the district police officer of Rahim Yar Khan are supporting those who had abducted Radha”.

He adds: “The police authorities are neither registering a first information report (FIR) against the accused, nor are they taking any action to recover the girl from the custody of Abdul Jabbar”. Mehnga Ram said his daughter had been missing since December 21, 2009, and the family had searched for her everywhere. Eventually, he said, some locals informed him that the girl was in the possession of the head of the Darul Aloom in Khanpur. Continue Reading →

Saudi women protest rape of children in KSA

This is the first video I have seen by Saudis protesting the lack of person status women have in the KSA. Very encouraging, even if they kep the protest very tame and focus on child ‘marriage.’
