AN alarming number of under-age girls – some as young as nine – are being forced into marriage in Islington, according to a leading campaign group.

The Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation (IKWRO) claim that at least 30 girls in the borough  were forced into marriage in 2010.

The practice was condemned by the Imam of Finsbury Park Mosque, who said such marriages were against Islam and “unacceptable”.

He pledged to invalidate any marriage which he said were carried out by “back-street Imams”.

IKWRO, which made headlines last month when they revealed there had been almost 3,000 “honour-based” violence cases in 2010, has shown the Tribune records which revealed at least three 11-year-old girls and two nine-year-olds had been forced into marriage with older men within Islington. The oldest girls involved were 16.

They have warned that hundreds of Islington girls could be suffering sexual, emotional and physical scars as a result of the child marriages every year and are calling for teachers, social workers and police to be better trained to spot and manage the abuse.

Information from the Ministry of Justice, following a Freedom of Information request, revealed that 32 Forced Marriage Protection Order applications were made for children under 16 in Britain last year.

A 15-year-old Afghan girl who was tortured for months after her arranged marriage has spoken out for the first time since her rescue, saying she hopes her husband and his family are jailed for her abuse.

Sahar Gul became the bruised and bloodied face of women’s rights in Afghanistan after she was rescued in late December when an uncle called police.

Speaking in an interview on Saturday from a hospital in Kabul, Gul blamed her husband, his parents and his sister for her ordeal.

‘I want them to be in jail,’ she said. ‘They gave me electric shock. … They beat me with cables and tortured me.’

She is being treated for multiple injuries that include broken fingers and ripped-out fingernails, the Associated Press reports.

Police in Baghlan province where Gul was rescued have said her in-laws locked her up and tortured her after she refused to work as a prostitute. Her husband’s parents and sister have been arrested. They deny any wrongdoing.

Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for her husband, who serves in the Afghan army.
Her doctor, Feriba Omarzada, said Gul is recovering but is still traumatized.

Gul’s story has shocked Afghanistan and prompted calls for more efforts to end underage marriage.

The legal marriage age in Afghanistan is 16, but the United Nations agency UN Women estimates that half of all girls are forced to marry under age 15.

Sahar Gul, 15, was in critical condition when she was rescued from a house in northern Baghlan province last week.  Police say Gul’s in-laws pulled out her nails and hair, and locked her in a dark basement bathroom for about five months, with barely enough food and water to survive.

Hindu girls abducted, forced to convert to Islam — a growing trend in Pakistan

Bharti, A 15 year-old, is the 18th Hindu girl to have been reportedly abducted, forced to convert to Islam, and forced to marry a Muslim man, in the Lyari area of Karachi, a city in the south of Pakistan, the Express Tribune of India reported yesterday. The real number is probably much higher. In 2009, in the province of Sindh 18 Hindu girls had also been kidnapped.   

The family of the teenage girl filed a complaint with Bhagdadi police station, and a court hearing has begun. On the first day of the hearing Bharti — who has been renamed Ayesha, apparently after the favorite wife of Islam’s prophet Mohammed — appeared “clad in a black ‘abaya’ ” and hardly acknowledged her parent’s presence.

Pakistan: ‘675 women, girls’ killed for honour in first 9 months of year

Islamabad, 20 Dec. (AKI) – At least 675 Pakistani women and girls were murdered during the first nine months of the year in so-called honour killings, according to a news report, citing a senior official in the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.
Many of the victims were gang raped before being killed, the unnamed official said. At least 71 victims of the killings committed for allegedly defaming family honour were under 18 years old, the AFP news agency reported.

At least 19 were killed by their sons, 49 by their fathers and 169 by their husbands, AFP reported. Many of the victims were accused of having affairs or marrying without permission The Commission reported 791 honour killings in 2010 and there was no discernible decrease this year, the official added.

A young Asian bride was drugged and held prisoner by her family after she broke off an arranged engagement to her first cousin and secretly married another man, a court heard today.

Naila Afsar, 23, was also threatened with death, assaulted and abused by angry close relatives after they discovered she had wed Afsar Saddiq without telling them, it was alleged.

She was given a milky drink laced with a prescription-only sedative in a bid to put her to sleep while they took her back to the family home – and away from her new husband, it was said.

It is hard to feel outrage anymore at the things Islam does. Perhaps that is one of the worst things Islam does to Western people. It changes our standards, not so long ago amazingly high in terms of what we thought of as an outrage and as unacceptable and dumbs us down so that things we would have demanded our governments answer with. perhaps, military force a decade or so ago, we now think of as business as usual. But now and again a story comes along that still requires the use of a blood pressure cuff. This is one of them. Islam and it’s preposterous definition of ‘marriage’. A counterfeit permission slip to rape at will.

A 12-year-old Christian girl was kidnapped and repeatedly raped for eight months in Pakistan by a man who then falsified marriage documents with her, it was claimed today.

The girl was lured on a shopping trip in Lahore by a friend, before she was driven 120 miles to Tandianwalla and raped by the friend’s uncle in January this year.

Two days later, she was forced to sign papers consenting to marriage with the man and beaten for refusing to convert from Christianity to Islam.

In the fine tradition of the founder of Islam himself, The Pirate Mohamed, someone who takes “Following the example of the prophet” seriously managed to pull the following off.

I remind the reader that one of Mohamed’s ‘wives’ was a women who’s real husband and sons Mohamed had just slaughtered in his taking of a Jewish city and when he saw this weeping horrified widow who had just lost her children as well, he ordered a few words muttered at her and then she was his legal property or ‘wife’ in Islamic terms.

A husband who knocked out his virgin wife with chloroform and raped her has been jailed for eight years.

The 35-year-old man tied the woman to a bed and knocked her out using the ‘obsolete Victorian anaesthetic’ on at least two occasions during their six weeks of marriage.

The woman, a Bangladeshi immigrant who was 21 at the time, had repeatedly refused to have sex with her new husband because she was too nervous.

The husband, who cannot be named for legal reasons, poured the chloroform onto a towel, pressed it over her face, then tied her up before raping her at his home in Poplar, east London.
