Apostates from Islam in Germany
Today and in the past couple of days both on Vlad’s youtube channel as well as here on the blog, a few Muslims have made the claim that Islam is not at all how it is represented here, and that there is indeed freedom of conscience etc. ad nauseum. In that spirit I offer this morsel from German TV. An account of a family who converted from Islam to Christianity

Maher El Gohary and his daughter, Dina, who converted to Christianity, have been denied by the Egyptian government permission to change their identity cards identifiying them as Christians. The Goharys live clandestinely in Cairo. They daily face the threat of possible extra judicial punishment, including death. Dina, the Gohary daughter wrote President Obama following his Cairo speech at al Azhar University in June 2009 drawing attention to their plight. In her letter to President Obama, Dina Gohary noted:
“Mr. President Obama, we are a minority in Egypt. We are treated very badly. You said that the Muslim minority in America are treated very well, so why are we not treated here likewise? We are imprisoned in our own home because Muslim clerics called for the murder of my father, and now the Government has set for us a new prison, we are imprisoned in our own country.” The Egyptian girl asked President Obama to mediate with the Egyptian government on their behalf.
Maher El Gohary had filed a legal acton in Egyptian courts. His petition was rejected: Gohary said:
“If the Egyptian nationality is the cause of my imprisonment within my home and being unable to move, then I do not want it,” he said. El-Gohary said he’d rather hold any other nationality than stay in Egypt where he said he and his daughter are “suffering imprisonment within the walls of my apartment and without any freedom.”
The quandary of the apostate Hegazy family is compounded by the refusal of Egyptian government to permit registration of their children as Christians. Note this application made on behalf of the Hegazys to the Special Rapporteur for Human Rights by the European Centre for Law and Justice, an affiliate of the American Center for Law and Justice:
“[Mohammed Bishoy] Hegazy and his family members are Christians converted from Islam. Furthermore, Mariam, their two year old daughter,was born of two Christian parents, and her birth certificate must state the correct information related to her faith.”
Their lives and home has been threatened .
Jussuf al Badri, the Egyptian Islamic jurist states that under Sharia, “God has commanded us to kill those who leave islam”. Such is the fragile and tragic plight of apostates in Muslim countries who daily face the threat of vigilantism and death. And Islam promotes the fiction that it is the religion of peace? Not the case as exemplified by the Gohary and Hegazy cases and millions of other silent apostates whose very existence is daily threatened with death under Sharia fatwas in Muslim lands.

Canadian-born Yahya Abu Sumayyah, who converted to Islam after reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X, speaks during the Journey of Faith Islamic conference yesterday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
Toronto — At the continent’s largest Islamic conference, the disclaimers in the Journey of Faith program, given out to the thousands of attendees, highlights the difficulty of portraying the modern face of an old religion.
Organizers, it says, “are not responsible for materials or opinions expressing views contrary to Canadian and international laws.”
Likewise, “promotion of any materials deemed illegal by Canadian federal and provincial laws is strictly prohibited,” and those caught doing so are on their own.
The warnings suggest that not everyone who might come here is in complete agreement with the conference theme of peaceful coexistence.
“Whatever lifestyle you chose in this country is your choice,” said Said Rageah, conference chairman, in an interview.
“Whether you chose to wear the burka or walk the street in a bikini, it is your choice,” he said, adding he fled repression in Somalia to seek freedom in Canada, where he is raising his six Canadian-born children.
“I’m telling the Canadian public that we can both coexist, both live together in peace.
“We’re not radicalizing anyone, and we are not abandoning Islam. We are here to correct, not to corrupt.”
The conference, which opened on Friday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, is billed as North America’s largest Islamic gathering with an expected attendance of 10,000.
It has already grabbed headlines over apparently incongruent views.
Dr. Zakir Naik, a 44-year-old Indian televangelist scheduled to deliver the keynote address on Sunday, was recently barred from entering Britain after highlights of past speeches drew attention to disparaging remarks about women, gays, Jews and non-Muslims and apparent support for Osama bin Laden, the terrorist leader.
Mr. Rageah says it is a case of cutting and pasting excerpts of past speeches to portray an inaccurate picture.
Because of the British ban, Dr. Naik and his entire production crew with Peace TV are not travelling to Canada, on suggestions he would receive similar treatment by the Canadian government. He has cancelled the trip “due to the uncertainty of his admission to Canada.”
“Last year he came to speak and he had a visa for five years,” said Mr. Rageah. There were no problems, he said. “If a person like that is so dangerous then why was he given a five-year visa?”
Dr. Naik will still be heard on Sunday, but via a live video feed.
on Friday, the 2,000 early registered attendees heard beautifully rhythmic recitations of the Koran in Arabic, lectures on forgiveness and the importance of following the message of the Koran.
An ethnically diverse crowd of men and women, almost all of whom wore hijabs or face-covering niqabs, sat in different sections of the huge hall, where seating for several thousand was set up.
The first speaker, Abdulkadir Ali Cambe, from Britain, drew upon a story in the Koran for his message, saying: “We must be kind to our brothers and sisters in Islam. We must be kind to our brothers and sisters in humanity.”
Canadian-born Yahya Abu Sumayyah, who converted to Islam after reading the autobiography of American radical Malcolm X, implored Muslims to not compromise their religion for the sake of the pleasure, money or love.

Canary in the Coalmine: Europe’s “Decoy Jews”

“Decoy Jew” is a new phrase in the Netherlands. Jews are no longer safe in major Dutch cities such as Amsterdam. Since 1999, Jewish organizations in the Netherlands have been complaining that Jews who walk the Dutch streets wearing skullcaps risk verbal and physical attacks by young Muslims. Being insulted, spat at or attacked are some of the risks associated with being recognizable as a Jew in contemporary Western Europe.
Last week, a television broadcast showed how three Jews with skullcaps, two adolescents and an adult, were harassed within thirty minutes of being out in the streets of Amsterdam. Young Muslims spat at them, mocked them, shouted insults and made Nazi salutes. “Dirty Jew, go back to your own country,” a group of Moroccan youths shouted at a young indigenous Dutch Jew. “It is rather ironic,” the young man commented, adding that if one goes out in a burka one encounters less hostility than if one wears a skullcap.
In an effort to arrest the culprits who terrorize Jews, the Amsterdam authorities have ordered police officers to walk the streets disguised as Jews. The Dutch police already disguise officers as “decoy prostitutes, decoy gays and decoy grannies” to deter muggings and attacks on prostitutes, homosexuals and the elderly. Apparently sending out the decoys has helped reduce street crime. The “decoy Jew” has now been added to the police attributes.
The deployment of “decoy Jews”, however, is being criticized by leftist parties such as the Dutch Greens. Evelien van Roemburg, an Amsterdam counselor of the Green Left Party, says that using a decoy by the police amounts to provoking a crime, which is itself a criminal offence under Dutch law.
Unfortunately, the situation in Amsterdam is not unique. Jews in other Dutch cities also regularly complain about harassment. So do Jews in neighboring countries.
On Monday, the Belgian newspaper De Standaard reported that large numbers of Jews are leaving Antwerp for America, Britain or Israel. Antwerp – nicknamed the “Jerusalem of the North” – is one of the major centers of Jewish culture in the Low Countries. “In London, you are not harassed if you wear a skullcap, but here you are,” a young Antwerp Jew told the paper.
Kleinblatt, a famous Jewish Antwerp bakery, which has been handed down from father to son since 1903, will soon break with that tradition because the baker’s son has emigrated to the U.S. “We no longer feel safe and welcome here,” a young Jew who is leaving for London told De Standaard. “Muslim immigrants blame us for what is happening in Israel.” Another young Jew, who is leaving for New York, says: “New York is a paradise for Jews. Unlike Belgium, non-Jews in America are pro-Israel.”

What’s in a name? Why the mosque at Ground Zero is called the Cordoba House
The Cordoba Initiative, the group that has long campaigned for and spear-headed the building of a mega-mosque near the ruins of Ground Zero in New York City, has yet to acknowledge this place a mosque, instead referring it as a ‘cultural centre’. It boasts according to it’s web site, that the centre (to be guided by Islamic values in their truest form”) will play host to restaurants, a swimming pool, a conference area, art exhibition spaces and a ‘spiritual place’ all attempting to bridge the great divide between Muslims and non-Muslims. Living harmoniously with each other in the name of freedom will be brought about by such an effort and Cordoba House will be perfect testimony to the Islamic ideals of bridge-building, tolerance and dialogue. Muslims have a voice! they proclaim, and what better way of improving relations than to build an “inter-faith” centre at Ground Zero, the very place where “a few of the misguided who hijacked Islam” smashed planes into the Twin Towers on the morning of September 11, 2001. Of course they did not speak for true Islam…..
This is a project intent upon setting the record straight according to the CI, to address the many ‘misconceptions’ non-Muslims have of Islam. It is set to represent the ideal of working together, Imam Feisal AbdulRauf of the Cordoba Initiative says, much in the same way I suspect that his group’s Sharia Index Project will work together to deliver to American Muslims a ‘peaceful parallel to American civil law’. As such, the initiative can successfully claim:
“After two years of work, ‘the Sharia Index Project’s working team of Sunni and Shi’a legal scholars from Morocco to Indonesia achieved consensus on a final structure on philosophy, methodology, and approach to providing the general public, opinion leaders, and state officials in both the Muslim and Western worlds with an Islamic legal benchmark for measuring the “Islamicity” of a state’. Now and again, and by now and again I mean about three times a week, something hits the news which make my wonder how the media and the worlds leftist useful-idiots would handle a story had Bush done it and not Obama. You know, things like electing an admitted tax fraudster to head of the IRS sort of thing. The kind of thing that would make you think half the US needed rabies shots from the way they behave while when Obama actually does the thing, I mean actually does something that Bush was oft accused of but actually didn’t do, there is stark, deafening, silence.

Lastly, I promised myself that I would not blog about US politics unless it crossed our special lines of interest. Islam and the west, and irrational leftism. Sadly I have broken that promise and twice within a week. Sometimes the outrage has to leak out or there is medical damage.

The strict Muslim father and brother of “Harry Potter” actress Afshan Azad have been charged with threatening to kill her because she has a boyfriend.
Azad, 22, fled the suburban English home she shared with her father, Abdul, 54, mother, Nilofar, and three brothers after the bizarre incident on May 21, authorities said.
A spokesman for prosecutors said her brother Ashraf, 28, physically attacked her and both he and their father threatened to kill her because of her relationship with an unidentified Hindu man.
They confronted her in her bedroom and left her “badly bruised” when she refused to stop seeing the man, the Daily Express said.
Afshan, who appeared in four Potter movies is believed to have taken refuge at the London home of friends.
Both of the accused men appeared in Manchester Magistrates’ Court and were ordered not to travel to London while the case was adjourned until July 12. Their bail conditions also required them to observe a curfew of 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. and not to contact an unnamed man, believed to be the boyfriend.
No other details of the incident were disclosed. But Ashraf told the Daily Telegraph that the family will suffer as a result of the scandal.
“We are going to get trouble from the community now,” he said. “It is bad news for our safety, her safety.”
“Her career could be ruined. When she goes to a premiere or something, they are going to ask her about this, not the film,” he added.
“My younger brother is going to get harassed at college,” Ashraf said. “All our family is going to be harassed by the community because of this.”
Afshan, who had never acted before, was a student in Manchester in 2005 when she auditioned as a “laugh” for the film “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” She won the role of Padma Patil, one of Harry’s witch classmates and later his girlfriend.
She appeared again as Padma, the twin of Parvati Patil, who is played by 22-year-old Shefali Chodhury, in three more films and will appear in the final installment, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows,” next year.
The arrests were the latest misfortune for a Potter cast member. In 2008, Rob Knox, who played Marcus Belby in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” was stabbed to death when he tried to break up a fight involving his 17-year-old brother.
Muslim Brotherhood Launches its own version of FaceBook

Gulf media is reporting on the launch of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood’s version of the social networking site Facebook, to be called IkhwanBook. According to a report in the National newspaper:
CAIRO // The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt’s powerful Islamist opposition movement, will launch its own version of the hugely popular social networking website Facebook within the next several months, its members say. IkhwanBook, which is already up, running and accepting members at www.ikhwanfacebook.com, borrows many of the same social concepts – such as image and video sharing, live chatting and online “friendships” – that attracted some 400 million users to the original Facebook after only six years. Yet given the Brotherhood’s goals of recruiting new members and popularising its relatively moderate conception of political Islam, the new site seems somewhat counter-intuitive, say some of the movement’s followers and observers. With a subscriber base that exceeds the population of most large countries, Facebook should be the perfect platform for propagating ideas and attracting adherents. But defenders of the site say they envision IkhwanBook as a complementary parallel – not a replacement – for Facebook. The organisation, members say, wants a social networking site of its own that can be tailored to its unique need for privacy, security and decency. “I think that it’s important that we have channels which are not contradictory to the original Facebook but which are parallel to it,” said Ahmed Said, an engineer and a member of the Brotherhood’s media development team. “We will not be isolated. A little known anti-military radical group has claimed responsibility for the bombing that ripped through a Canadian Forces recruitment office in Trois-Rivieres, Que., early Friday.
The blast occurred at 3 a.m. when the building was empty. The extent of the damage has not yet been assessed, but the building’s windows and door were shattered.
Police received a bomb-threat call 20 minutes before the explosion, and no one was injured in the attack, which the Canadian Forces said it considers a “single and isolated incident.”
A group calling itself Resistance internationaliste — claiming to have carried out two other bombings in the province — issued a statement Friday alleging it detonated an explosive in the centre. In a two-page email, the group lashed out at Canada’s military practices and ideals, the war in Afghanistan and police “violence” at last weekend’s G20 summit in Toronto. Continue Reading →
