Gaddafi supporters seize control of Libyan town
(Reuters) – Fighters loyal to Libya’s overthrown leader Muammar Gaddafi took control of a town south-east of the capital on Monday, flying their green flags in defiance of the country’s fragile new government.
The fightback by Gaddafi supporters defeated in Libya’s civil war, though unlikely to spread elsewhere, added to the problems besetting a government which in the past week has been reeling from one crisis to another. Gaddafi himself was captured and killed in October after weeks on the run.
Accounts from the town of Bani Walid, about 200 km (120 miles) from Tripoli, described armed Gaddafi supporters attacking the barracks of the pro-government militia in the town and then forcing them to fall back.
“They control the town now. They are roaming the town,” said a fighter with the 28th May militia, loyal to Libya’s ruling National Transitional Council (NTC), which came under attack.
The fighter told Reuters the loyalists were flying “brand new green flags” from the centre of town. The flags were symbols of Gaddafi’s 42-year rule.
A resident said four people were killed and 20 wounded in the fighting, during which the sides used heavy weapons.
Bani Walid, base of the powerful Warfallah tribe, was one of the last towns to surrender to the anti-Gaddafi rebellion last year. Many people there oppose the new leadership.

In June last year Carnita Matthews, 47, successfully appealed against her conviction and six-month jail sentence for knowingly making a false complaint.
The charge was in relation to a now infamous incident in June 2010 when she was stopped by a highway patrol officer at Woodbine, in south-west Sydney.
It was alleged that Ms Matthews later claimed in a statutory declaration that, after she refused to remove her veil fully for the purposes of identification, the officer tried to remove it himself.
This declaration was later found to be false, and she was charged.However, a judge later found there was no evidence the statutory declaration had been made by Ms Matthews or even that it was knowingly false.
She then claimed that the entire prosecution was improper and unreasonable and demanded that NSW Police pay her legal costs.
That claim was rejected by Judge Clive Jeffreys in the Downing Centre District Court today.
AAP reports: The judge said he could not find that the investigation into the alleged offence had been conducted in an unreasonable or improper manner, or that the proceedings had been initiated without reasonable cause.

CAIRO: A statement issued by Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood said that US Ambassador to Cairo Anne Patterson met with the group’s Supreme Guide Mohammed Badie on Wednesday, and reportedly told her that Sharia law, or Islamic law, “ensures personal freedoms for all.”
The MB’s statement explained that Patterson expressed her gratitude for the meeting and congratulated the group for their political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), victory in the recent parliamentary elections, and stressed that the United States is looking forward to cooperate with “whoever is chosen by the Egyptian people and a democratic government.”
The statement pointed out that Badie also thanked the ambassador for her congratulations, and said the elections “made Egyptians proud,” adding that the results of elections are a “victory” for the democratic alliance led by FJP, which includes a number of other parties.
The Supreme Guide criticized the successive US administrations and accused them of “controlling people through their support to the dictators,” which made the popularity of the United States decline across the region.
“The current era is the era of the people and we want to see deeds not words by the United States to recover its credibility among Arabs and Muslims, and in particular with regard to the Palestinian issue, which is the most important cause for Arabs and Muslims.”
Badie explained that the principles of Islamic Sharia law is the “main source of legislation and the biggest guarantee of public and private freedoms, as it ensures the freedom of belief, religion and personal rights to all citizens equally.”

Bigamist wins ‘family life’ human rights case
A foreign drug-dealing bigamist has won the right to stay in Britain because of his human right to “family life”.
Home Office lawyers hoped the deportation of foreign criminal Taoufik Didi would be an open-and-shut case.
He had been sentenced to three years in prison for selling cocaine to undercover police officers, and so exceeded the criteria for “automatic deportation” under the law.
However, the Moroccan launched a human rights appeal, telling immigration judges he had been in a loving relationship with a British woman, Marina Gregory, for 10 years. He now intended to wed her and start a family.
The judges believed the 47-year-old criminal and, to the disappointment of Home Office officials, granted his appeal under the Human Rights Act – ruling that his “right to private and family life” entitled him to stay on in Britain.
Yet all was not as it seemed.

Radioactive material stolen from nuclear power plant in Egypt

CAIRO: Radioactive material has been stolen from a nuclear power station on Egypt’s Northern coast, according to a report from Egypt’s state-run Al-Ahram newspaper.
A safe containing radioactive material was stolen from the Dabaa nuclear power plant, and another was broken into, with part of its contents stolen.
The Egyptian government has deployed special teams to track down the stolen materials, according to the Al-Ahram report.
The Dabaa plant was the site of mass protests last week, as about 500 Egyptians set out to demand the relocation of the controversial nuclear plant, which is still under construction.
Military police worked to disperse the protesters, as they exchanged gunfire and hurled stones at one another, devolving quickly into violence.

The Arabic website of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood is rife with anti- Semitic and anti-Israel content, according to a recent report by a US-based media monitoring group.
The report found that the Islamist group’s website, Ikhwanonline.com, regularly features articles denying the Holocaust and warning Muslims against the covetous and exploitative nature of the “Jewish character.” Other articles extol jihad and martyrdom, condemn Egypt’s peace treaty with Israel and denounce negotiations as means for regaining lands lost by Islam.

Östlund, from the Department of History at Lund University, found that Sweden had an active role in the 18th century slave-trades through the discovery of forgotten ship registration documents stored in Stockholm’s consulate archives. While ‘not surprised’ about uncovering Sweden’s participation in the Ottoman Empire, he stresses the importance of shedding light on Sweden’s role in the affair. “Sweden actively participated in the Ottoman Empire slave trade with the Sub-Sahara – and this is completely new,” he said. According to Östlund’s findings, the shipping registries state that the Swedish ships’ cargo was “negroes”. While the slaves sent to America were predominantly men used for plantation work, the Ottoman Empire had a different agenda entirely. “Up to 75 percent of the passengers on board were women,” said Östlund. “These women were used as servants and concubines, often both at the same time. They lived a relatively short time, research suggests an average of seven years after reaching the Empire, and this kept the slave trade between Africa and Tripoli going strong.”

The teacher, Tuija Rinnie, happens to also be a convert to Islam, but that wasn’t enough for some of the muslim immigrant parents, she had to be covered up in the hijab as well. It almost humorous to read how much of a shock it was to her, being not only expected to cover up, but being ridiculed for teaching belly dancing as well. KGS

Helsinki teacher was also expected (by parents) to wear a veil
I hope that through my story would arise a discussion of Finnish immigrant children in schools and in society, says the Arabic language teacher Tuija Rinne.
Rinne teaches in a school in Helsinki. Previously, she taught the religion of Islam. Some of the children’s parents were requiring that Rinne wear the veil, as the women may have used Muslim culture.
– This is a small but vocal number of parents. They do not always tell their opinions directly, but I got wind of it through back channel sources.
– When I’m done with a direct interaction with their parents, consensus is often born. Some have even asked me privately for forgiveness.
In extreme cases, some parents have forbidden their children to participate in Rinne’s classes. Rinne says that the case in question, she is not accused of anything. The Muslim parents’ behavior is based on the fact that they did not believe her, as a Finn, to be qualified to work as a teacher of Islam. For them, the use of the veil would be evidence of eligibility.
– They have been proven many times that I have a degree from the University of Helsinki, and I am qualified to serve as a teacher.
Most of the Helsinki metropolitan area, and Islam and the Arabic language teachers have an immigrant background. Rinne says her experience of pressure from the parents, to be a very tough.
– Fortunately, I have had the full support of my employer. Rinne does not want to bring any particular point out that her religion is Muslim, because it is to her a personal matter.
– Finnish law is clear that teachers of religion do not need to be a member of that denomination. Besides, the world is full of millions of Muslim women who do not use a veil. Some of the students’ parents have been even shocked that in Rinne’se free time, she teaches oriental dance, or belly dancing.
According to Rinne, some of the pressure is partly due to the fact that some children have had difficulties to succeed in the classroom. If the child has received a poor test grade, it has been interpreted that the teacher is teaching badly.
– This, however, sometimes students do, regardless of cultural background. Now the situation has calmed down around Rinne, because she can now concentrate on just teaching the Arabic language. Since last autumn the same teachers do not teach anymore in Helsinki, Islam, and immigrants in their native language.
For example, in Vantaa, such a differentiated practice has been in the past. Rinne believes that the difficulties experienced are part of the challenge of multiculturalism that Finnish schools and society are facing.

NOTE: The artist makes a few mistakes however. The first one was to apologize, the second was to use a lame argument that he views cannibals as fictitious characters as Santa and werewolves. Cannibalism still happens today in many parts of Africa. So it wasn’t a racist cartoon, but highly factual truth telling.

Swedish hip-hop star slams ‘racist’ cartoon

When Swedish newspaper Metro on Tuesday published a comic strip by Norwegian artist Frode Øverli, the paper received a barrage of complaints from readers who perceived the cartoon as racist.
Swedish artist Jason ”Timbuktu” Diakité was among those who reacted angrily toward the image.
”Frode Øverli’s comic strip…was the most insensitive and degrading thing I have ever read in your newspaper. It is a crystal clear case of ignorance and lack of insight in what it feels like to be subjected to racism. I feel deeply offended and very sad,” Diakité wrote in an email to Metro editor Peter Gunne.
The comic strip features a cannibal chief, his daughter, and a prospective suitor.
The cartoon was a play on the the phrase “to ask for someone’s hand” and many Metro readers felt that it was based on racial stereotypes.
”After all these years of human knowledge it seems you remain in the era of steam engines, racial biology and genocide. You should be ashamed of yourself for not knowing better,” Diakité wrote.
However, it wasn’t just Diakité who objected to the controversial strip. According to Metro, some 60 readers contacted the paper saying that they felt that the image was racist.
The paper has therefore chosen to print an apology, saying that it never meant to offend anyone.
”Is it OK to make fun of cannibals? Yes, I think so. Is it OK to joke in a way that can be seen as racist? Absolutely not,” Gunne wrote in Metro and added that the paper has a zero-tolerance policy against racism.
