Former Guantanamo detainee Omar Khadr woke up in an Alberta prison Wednesday after months stuck in isolation at a penitentiary in Ontario where an inmate had threatened his life, The Canadian Press has learned.

Khadr was flown to the Edmonton Institution Tuesday, potentially ending a situation in which he had been deprived of prison programming that complicated efforts to seek parole, his lawyer Dennis Edney confirmed.

“Hopefully, this is a positive step in his long journey to freedom,” the Edmonton-based Edney said.

Twitter and the CBC: Antisemitism gets a free ride on both

On October 19th, CBC.ca posted a story about how Twitter responded to a tsunami of racist and antisemitic tweets (“Twitter removes French-language anti-Semitic tweets” – www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2012/10/19/twitter-racist-tweets-france.html).

This very same CBC.ca report inadvertently provides a fascinating study in how ineffective and unresponsive our own national broadcaster can be, when faced with antisemitism posted to their own website.

Unlike Twitter, the CBC website’s user-generated content is not supposed to be a free-for-all.

It’s still our national broadcaster, purportedly governed by Content Submission Guidelines, which prohibit people from posting “Hate Speech” (section 9.c), and monitored by a team of moderators that carry out that policy. As a further measure, each posted comment has a little button called “Report Abuse”, that lets readers alert the moderators if they think an inappropriate comment snuck in unnoticed.

But, like rust, antisemitism doesn’t sleep. Sadly, CBC’s website moderation apparently does, because while the CBC was reporting the antisemitism on Twitter, they were actively ignoring antisemitism on their own website.

BBC Left wing bias, so predictable its actually funny.

This time, the BBC had to find some by-the-book out there leftist prof. from the University of Texas to obfuscate and avoid any actual pertinent facts about the French riots and try and stuff it back into the usual commie narrative talking points. Poverty, (without explaining why) unemployment (without explaining why) and “being disenfranchised” all the while giving the current socialist government of France a pass for the responsibility because they have only been in power a few months. None of this of course is pertinent or even information about the riots. Just classic slapstick BBC propaganda. Like the CBC in Canada, if we didn’t have to pay for it, it would be funny as hell.

A recent CBC.ca report “Israel returns remains of 91 Palestinian militants” is a

fascinating study of bizarre journalistic behaviours and standards.

In fact, this short and sweet little tidbit is more interesting in what it fails to report than what it actually reports. The story was originally written by the Associated Press, but was heavily edited by the CBC before being posted on the CBC.ca site.

Who were these 91 people?

Today’s journalists call people who commit terrorist actions ‘militants’. It’s supposed to be ‘fair’ journalistic practice. In this case, it’s also a nice vague term for these people who indiscriminately murdered civilians for political purposes.

Initially, neither AP nor CBC.ca bothered to tell us what these 91 people did that caused their death, beyond a single sentence (“All 91 were killed over the past decades while carrying out suicide bombings or other attacks on Israeli targets”). That sentence came from ‘Palestinian officials’. It makes it sound like the ‘militants’ died attacking Israel Defense Force military positions. The CBC later updated the story to provide some details, but still held back reporting that these 91 ‘militants’ include suicide bombers who carried out the 2003 attacks on the No. 2 bus and at Cafe Hillel in Jerusalem, the 1996 suicide bombing of a hitchhiking post in Ashkelon, two buses in Beersheba in 2004, and the Savoy Hotel attack in Tel Aviv in 1975. In other words, they killed indiscriminately, focusing on civilian ‘soft targets’.

Thousands of Israelis died, or were maimed by the barbaric attacks, carried out by these Palestinian ‘militants’. These 91 ‘militants’ performed violence against Israeli civilians, that is as barbaric and shocking as the violence reported yesterday in Houla Syria.

Where are the Victims in this Report?

The CBC and AP dropped any pretense of fairness and balance in reporting this story. The Palestinian side is over-reported, and the Israeli side under-reported. The human interest side of the story ends with the Palestinian families. There is no human interest reporting of the Israeli side at all.

Neither AP nor CBC hints that each one of these ‘militant’ remains is associated with dead Israeli civilians whose families who also mourn them. The Palestinian families of the ‘militants’ (i.e., the families of the killers) are interviewed and presented for the readers’ empathy, but no Israeli victim families were interviewed.

Similarly, neither report even mentioned that there exists an Israeli organization called the Almagor Terror Victims Association, which expressed strong reservations about returning the remains (among which was that the concern that the PA would use this as an opportunity to glorify the terrorists and terrorism). This additional information was available from many credible Israeli news sources (which the CBC has used in the past), but the CBC chose to ignore the Israeli side instead.

Imagine reading a news report about Paul Bernardo, which featured interviews with his tearful family, but nobody mentioned his victims or talked to their families. Wouldn’t that look strange? Wouldn’t it leave a bad taste in your mouth?

Pomp and Ceremony

The CBC described the Palestinian families waiting to receive the remains. In a twist of sheer weirdness, they initially reported it just like they report the return of slain Canadian soldiers from Afghanistan (right down to the description of “Palestinian government ceremonies honouring the dead militants”).

But five hours later, they posted the parts of the AP report that they’d initially withheld – the parts that explicitly described how many Israelis were killed by each interviewee’s dead ‘militant’.

Why did it take 5 hours for the CBC to post the only thing kept this Palestinian ceremony from looking like a Canadian Ramp Ceremony?

The CBC Analysis – Cold Wars and Limbo Poles

In the past weeks we’ve been regaled by “analyses” produced by the CBC on various topics. Each one is somewhat interesting, but most leave a lot to be desired. What happened to the concept of “analysis”? Why is it that there are bloggers out there who do a better analysis of events using a pitiful fraction of the bloated resources available to our national broadcaster?

The mind boggles. Here’s an example of stunning mediocrity at the CBC, which would never have been tolerated 15 years ago.

Today’s CBC.ca web page contains the report “Incidents suggest Israel-Iran ‘cold war’ intensifying” by Andre Mayer. A quick lookup tells you that “Andre Mayer writes about the arts for CBC.ca“, “a Toronto-based journalist who lives to write and writes to live“, “Senior editor at CBC Arts Online“, “Features writer for CBCNews.ca“.

So what qualifies a features and arts writer to pen a report about Israel and Iran? Apparently, at the CBC, everyone is equally qualified to report on all things – actual in-depth knowledge isn’t required. (Where’s the CBC editorial process?)

 

Through Andre, the CBC tells us that ” there are growing indications that Israel and Iran have actually been fighting a covert war for years”. How astute of them to notice it – but actually, most of the rest of the international community knows that Iran has been attacking Israel, through its proxies, since 1982. Nobody with a lick of sense, or a gram of actual knowledge, would say something so remarkably inane or obvious. (Where’s the CBC editorial process?)

For years, the US Congress has discussed reports of Iran sponsoring international Islamic terrorism, funding, arming training and inspiring terrorist organizations, including Hezbollah, Hamas. Just a few weeks ago, the CBC reported how Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatolla Khamenei proudly announced to the world how they’ve been materially supporting terrorist organizations’ attacks on Israel since 1982, and will continue to do so www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2012/02/03/iran-nuclear.html

Hezbollah has even confirmed it.

Do you think Andre Mayer even mentioned it? I doubt he was even aware of it. (Where’s the CBC fact checking and editorial process?)

Once again, the 1.17 Billion dollar publicly funded corporation the CBC flexes it’s muscles at those who dare criticize it. I remember once a wise man once told me, ‘Stupidity is the second most common substance in the universe. The most common is irony’. Certainly true of the CBC who is less transparent, more biased, and more threatening to its critics than the various agencies that the CBC as Canada’s mass media is supposed to attack others for.

In essence, the CBC is a perfect example of what it was created to oppose, to prevent, and if necessary, to destroy.

I really think the time for the CBC as it is, has passed. Please write or call your MP and demand accountability for public funds the CBC receives and perhaps even a dismantling of it altogether. There is no excuse for a public broadcaster in the age of the internet and unlimited spectrum. Canada may need a national voice but we can now manage to get our opinions to each other fairly and equally using the internet. We do not need our opinions manufactured for us anymore, if indeed we ever did.

One thing is certain.

Blazing cat fur, operating on it’s own dime and with no government funding has done a better job of exposing important stories than the CBC has in recent months. And they didn’t need to deliberately falsify information to force their own narrative on us as the CBC did with the Shafia trial (at one point) either.

I would be interested to know how they could manage to limit such a documentary to only 90 minutes or whatever it is. I would suspect such a documentary would need several years just for the examples. In any Case, Bruce Bawer does a great review here and the DVD can be ordered here for any who would like to see it.

I can make a very good case that the CBC is far far worse, pumping countless cash into the retired geneticist’s faux-ndation to promote his various alternatives to efficient energy, David Suzuki.

Britain’s leading green activist research centre spent £15,000 on seminars for top BBC executives  in an apparent bid to block climate change sceptics from the airwaves, a vast new cache of leaked ‘Climategate’ emails has revealed.

The emails – part of a trove of more than 5,200 messages that appear to have been stolen from computers at the University of East Anglia – shed light for the first time on an incestuous web of interlocking relationships between BBC journalists and the university’s scientists, which goes back more than a decade.

They show that University staff vetted BBC scripts, used their contacts at the Corporation to stop sceptics being interviewed and were consulted about how the broadcaster should alter its programme output.

Like the first ‘Climategate’ leaks two years ago, they were placed last week on a Russian server by an anonymous source.

Again like their predecessors, they have emerged just before a United Nations climate summit, which is to start this week in Durban.

 

 

BBC insiders say the close links between the Corporation and the UEA’s two climate science departments, the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) and the Tyndall Centre for Climate Research, have had a significant impact on its coverage.

‘Following their lead has meant the whole thrust and tone of BBC reporting has been that the science is  settled, and that there is no need for debate,’ one journalist said. ‘If you disagree, you’re branded a loony.’

In 2007, the BBC issued a formal editorial policy document, stating that ‘the weight of evidence no longer justifies equal space being given to the opponents of the consensus’ – the view that the world faces catastrophe because of man-made carbon dioxide emissions.

The document says the policy was decided after ‘a high-level seminar with some of the best scientific experts’ – including those from UEA.

The ‘Climategate 2’ emails disclose that in private some of those same scientists have had doubts about aspects of the global warming case.

For example, Professor Phil Jones, the head of the CRU, admitted there was no evidence that the snows of Kilimanjaro were melting because of climate change, and he and his colleagues agreed there were serious problems with the famous ‘hockey stick’ graph – the depiction of global temperatures that suggests they were broadly level for 1,000 years until they started to rise with industrialisation.

But although there is now more scientific debate than ever about influences on climate other than CO2, prompted by the fact that the world has not warmed for 15 years, a report from the BBC Trust this year compared climate change sceptics to the conspiracy theorists who blame America for 9/11, and said Britain’s main sceptic think-tank, the Global Warming Policy Foundation, should be given no air time.
