Iran close to having nuclear weapon capability: Medvedev

MOSCOW, July 12 (Xinhua) — Iran is getting closer to acquiring the capability to build nuclear weapons, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday.

He urged Russian ambassadors and permanent representatives to move away from simplistic approaches toward Iran’s nuclear problem.

“We need to finally abandon any simplistic approaches toward this problem. Iran is getting closer to possessing the potential that in principle can be used to create nuclear weapons,” Medvedev was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.

He reiterated Russia’s positions that sanctions would not produce the desired results, but Russia will consistently urge Teheran to show essential openness and cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Saudi Arabia: Gives Israel Space To Attack Iranian Nuclear Sites

Saudi Arabia has conducted tests to enable Israeli jets to make a bombing raid on Iran’s nuclear facilities, The Times reported June 12. Defense sources in the Gulf say that Riyadh has agreed to allow Israel to use a narrow strip of its airspace in the north of the country to diminish the distance for a bombing run on Iran. To ensure the Israeli bombers pass safely, Riyadh has carried out tests to make certain its own jets are not scrambled and missile defense systems not activated.

WASHINGTON — In their last report before the United Nations Security Council votes on sanctions against Iran, international nuclear inspectors declared on Monday that Iran has now produced a stockpile of nuclear fuel that experts say would be enough, with further enrichment, to make two nuclear weapons.

The report, by the International Atomic Energy Agency, a branch of the United Nations, appears likely to bolster the Obama administration’s case for a fourth round of economic sanctions against Iran and further diminish its interest in a deal, recently revived by Turkey and Brazil, in which Iran would send a portion of its nuclear stockpile out of the country. Syria using secret bases to arm Hizbulah against Israel

Israel is likely to send a “calibrated signal” to Hezbollah and Syria by launching a precise airstrike against a weapons convoy are increasing, the Times of London reported Friday, following reports of Israeli plans to bomb a Syrian arms convey as it crossed the border into Lebanon. The Israeli strike was reportedly called off at the last minute.

Friday’s report covered tensions in the region, and cited satellite images of secret arms depots in Syria, in which surface-to-surface missiles destined for Hezbollah are stored. The report said the Times has been shown images of one such site, located in a compound near the town of Adra, northeast of Damascus. The site reportedly includes living quarters for Hezbollah fighters, arms sheds and a fleet of trucks used for transferring weapons. The facility is believed to be one of several used as a base for weapons deliveries.

“Hezbollah is allowed to operate this site freely,” a security source told the paper. “They often move the arms in bad weather when Israeli satellites are unable to track them.” The weapons in question are either of Syrian origin, or are delivered from Iran by sea or by air. Washington (CNN) — Just weeks after the failed car bombing of New York’s Times Square, the Department of Homeland Security says “the number and pace of attempted attacks against the United States over the past nine months have surpassed the number of attempts during any other previous one-year period.”

That grim assessment is contained in an unclassified DHS intelligence memo prepared for various law enforcement groups, which says terror groups are expected to try attacks inside the United States with “increased frequency.”

CNN obtained a copy of the document, dated May 21, which goes on to warn, “we have to operate under the premise that other operatives are in the country and could advance plotting with little or no warning.”

The intelligence note says recent attempted terror attacks have used operatives and tactics which made the plots hard to detect. Continue Reading →

JOINT DECLARATION BY IRAN, TURKEY AND BRAZIL
(17 May 2010)
Having met in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran, the undersigned have agreed on the
following Declaration:
1. We reaffirm our commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear
Weapons and in accordance with the related articles of the NPT, recall the right of all
State Parties, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, to develop research, production
and use of nuclear energy (as well as nuclear fuel cycle including enrichment
activities) for peaceful purposes without discrimination.
2. We express our strong conviction that we have the opportunity now to begin a forward
looking process that will create a positive, constructive, non-confrontational
atmosphere leading to an era of interaction and cooperation.
3. We believe that the nuclear fuel exchange is instrumental in initiating cooperation in
different areas, especially with regard to peaceful nuclear cooperation including
nuclear power plant and research reactors construction.
4. Based on this point the nuclear fuel exchange is a starting point to begin cooperation
and a positive constructive move forward among nations. Such a move should lead to
positive interaction and cooperation in the field of peaceful nuclear activities replacing
and avoiding all kinds of confrontation through refraining from measures, actions and
rhetorical statements that would jeopardize Iran’s rights and obligations under the
NPT.

This site deals mostly with Islam, which is the more pressing of the three, it would appear. But if you talk to any recent university graduate from the past few years in many if not most of the Western World’s most prestigious universities, you would think the West had lost the cold war.

And I think you would be right.

New York City police are investigating a vehicle in the Union Square area that appeared to be carrying at least two gas canisters, according to ABC News, Reuters reported May 14. The city’s bomb squad was called in to check out the vehicle parked near the intersection of 15th Street and Irving Place directly in front of the headquarters of the electric utility Con Edison. An NYPD spokesman confirmed investigation of a suspicious vehicle was under way in the Union Square area but could provide no further details. The Fire Department reported no radiation measured in the area

New York City police investigators located the owner of the 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, which was parked in front of the Con Edison utility building, AP reported May 14. The owner told police he had gas cans in his car because he mows lawns for his family. He parked the car in the area because he was attending a concert nearby, police said.

FBI searches LI, NJ and Boston-area homes in Times Square bombing case

An army of FBI agents executed search warrants at several locations on Long Island, New Jersey and in the Boston suburbs this morning in connection with the failed Times Square car bombing, authorities said.

Attorney General Eric Holder has told Congress that “several people” have been taken into custody for immigration violations in the case.

“They do not relate to any known immediate threat. … This is part of an ongoing investigation,” he said.

In describing the development at a House Judiciary Committee hearing today, Holder said the arrests came as investigators looking into the bombing attempt executed search warrants.

Earlier in the day, FBI spokeswoman FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz said the searches stemmed from evidence gathered in the investigation pertaining to Faisal Shahzad, who tried to detonate an SUV loaded with explosives on a crowded street two weeks ago in Times Square.

FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents executed search warrants in “several locations in the Northeast,” according to a statement from ICE.

Four people — two on Long Island and two in the Boston area — have been taken into custody on alleged immigration violations in connection with the raids. Another location targeted by the feds is a print shop in Cherry Hill, NJ.

The FBI would not elaborate on the raids, although sources said those brought into custody helped in financing the attack.

“These searches are the product of evidence that has been gathered in the investigation subsequent to the attempted Times Square bombing and do not relate to any known immediate threat to the public or active plot against the United States,” said ICE spokeswoman Kelly Nantel.

The FBI would not confirm any addresses or locations, but Fox News reported that one of the raids was made in Watertown, right outside Boston. A law enforcement source told The Post that two others were picked up on Long Island.

Vinny Lacerra, 50, who lives across the street from the house raided in Watertown, said he was in his living room at 6 a.m. when he heard somebody shout: “FBI! Put your hands up!”

Lacerra told The Associated Press that he looked out his windows and saw 15 to 20 FBI agents with their guns drawn surrounding the house. He said about 15 minutes later, the agents went inside and came out with one man handcuffed and took him down the street.

JERUSALEM (AFP) – Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Tuesday accused nuclear power North Korea of supplying Syria with weapons of mass destruction.

Lieberman’s office quoted him as telling Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama at a meeting in Tokyo that such activity threatened to destabilise east Asia as well as the Middle East.

“The cooperation between Syria and North Korea is not focused on economic development and growth but rather on weapons of mass destruction” Lieberman said.

In evidence he cited the December 2009 seizure at Bangkok airport of an illicit North Korean arms shipment which US intelligence said was bound for an unnamed Middle East country.

Lieberman said Syria intended to pass the weapons on to the Lebanese Hezbollah militia and to the Islamic Hamas movement, which rules Gaza and has its political headquarters in Damascus.

“This cooperation endangers stability in both southeast Asia and also in the Middle East and is against all the accepted norms in the international arena,” Lieberman was quoted as telling Hatoyama.

Thai officials at the time said that acting on a tipoff from Washington they confiscated about 30 tonnes of missiles, rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons when the North Korean plane landed for refuelling in Bangkok.

Israel has accused North Korea in the past of transferring nuclear technology to Syria, which is technically in a state of war with the neighbouring Jewish state, although the two last fought openly in 1973.

Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper reported in 2007 that Israel seized North Korean nuclear material in a commando raid on a secret military site in Syria and then destroyed the site in an air attack.

Syria denied the report.

The communist regime in North Korea has denied collaborating on nuclear activity with Syria, while Israel has maintained an official silence on the reported September 2007 raid and strike.

Well, one way of falling behind with your house payments is to take half a year off to go to Pakistan and train in a terrorist camp.

The story of the Times Square bomber reads like some Urdu dinner-theater production of Mel Brooks’s The Producers that got lost in translation between here and Peshawar: A man sets out to produce the biggest bomb on Broadway since Dance a Little Closer closed on its opening night in 1983. Everything goes right: He gets a parking space right next to Viacom, owners of the hated Comedy Central! But then he gets careless: He buys the wrong fertilizer. He fails to open the valve on the propane tank. And next thing you know, his ingenious plot is the non-stop laugh riot of the Great White Way. Ha-ha! What a loser! Why, the whole thing’s totally — what’s the word? — “amateurish,” according to multiple officials. It “looked amateurish,” scoffed New York’s Mayor Bloomberg. “Amateurish,” agreed Janet Napolitano, the White House amateurishness czar.
