MOSCOW, July 12 (Xinhua) — Iran is getting closer to acquiring the capability to build nuclear weapons, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday.
He urged Russian ambassadors and permanent representatives to move away from simplistic approaches toward Iran’s nuclear problem.
“We need to finally abandon any simplistic approaches toward this problem. Iran is getting closer to possessing the potential that in principle can be used to create nuclear weapons,” Medvedev was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.
He reiterated Russia’s positions that sanctions would not produce the desired results, but Russia will consistently urge Teheran to show essential openness and cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The Russians seem to have a grip on how to deal with pirates
The Roman empire fell, and the dark ages descended on Europe for one main reason. Rome no longer had the ability or the will to defend the roads from brigands. This meant that goods, people and ideas could no longer travel from place to place and civilization collapsed and became a collection of isolated city states with no potential for meaningful growth or new ideas.
This is why it is so critical for the U.S.A. to hold global hegemony over the seas, to ensure the safe passage of goods from nation to nation and hence growth and continued spread of civilization, as we see in South Korea and elsewhere.
Sadly, the US seems to have lost any meaningful perspective on history of the facts that lead to the genuine cessation of suffering of human kind, and truly rational systems of distribution of wealth. Ironically however, the Russians do seem to understand how critical it is, that the oceans are safe from brigands.
Russians claim all pirates involved in piracy mysteriously died.
Vlad did a post earlier when it was first reported that Somali pirates had taken a Russian oil tanker and demanded ransom for it. Our suspicion was, that Russia may not feel the same contraints the US does when it deals with violent, civilization-destroying crime. I would guess the obvious was true this time. Sorry, I have sat on this link for ages and just now got around to it what with all the Lars Vilks stuff etc. But if anyone does not already know, here is how a nation that wishes to remain a nation handles matters of piracy.

MOSCOW – A Russian official claimed Tuesday that 10 pirates seized by Russian special forces aboard an oil tanker last week were quickly freed but then died on their way back to the Somali coast.
The unidentified high-ranking Defense Ministry official did not elaborate on how the pirates died, deepening a mystery that has prompted speculation the pirates were executed by commandos who had freed a Russian oil tanker seized in waters 500 miles (800 kilometers) east of Somalia’s coast. Communism, one of the three.
There are three great horrors the world has witnessed in the past 100 years.
Communism
Nazism
Islam.
This site deals mostly with Islam, which is the more pressing of the three, it would appear. But if you talk to any recent university graduate from the past few years in many if not most of the Western World’s most prestigious universities, you would think the West had lost the cold war.
And I think you would be right.
Below, a series of clips on communism and the hell on earth it created.
First few courtesy of KitmanTV and The Soviet Story trailer I made myself, as I was simply too moved by this excellent and powerful film not to do something to help promote it.
And below, a trailer for The Soviet Story. Find this movie, and watch it.

Russian method works. Sailors set free.
No harm came to any kidnapped Russian sailors during this rescue. According to Stratfor:
May 6, 2010
A Russian warship freed a Russian-owned oil tanker that was hijacked off the coast of Yemen, according to tanker owner Novorossiysk Shipping Company, Reuters reported May 6. All crew on board the tanker are alive and well, a spokeswoman for the shipping company said by telephone. State-run RIA news agency, citing an unnamed regional navy official, reported that Somali pirates were captured and no Russians were hurt during the rescue mission.
For context, look down a few posts to here:

Russians send warship after pirates. L A Times
Now this should be interesting. I wonder if Russia will have the same kind of limiting and perhaps even crippling rules of engagement that Obama has placed on as many as he can in terms of dealing with piracy.
If not Obama, then where did these limitations come from?

Russia sends warship after tanker is hijacked by Somali pirates
A crew of 23 Russians is aboard the Liberian-flagged MV Moscow University, reportedly carrying a cargo worth more than $50 million. The tanker, bound for China, was seized off Yemen.
A Russian warship was sailing toward the kidnapped crew of a Russian-owned oil tanker hijacked Wednesday by Somali pirates as the vessel headed into the Indian Ocean with a cargo reportedly valued at more than $50 million, according to a European antipiracy naval force.
The MV Moscow University tanker had left Sudan and was bound for China when pirates seized the 106,474-ton vessel about 350 miles off the Yemeni island of Socotra. The tanker flew a Liberian flag, but is owned by Novorossiysk Shipping Co. and carried a crew 23 Russians.
“This morning we had an attack on a Liberian-flagged ship Moscow University in the northeastern horn of our operation,” European Union Naval Force Commander Rear Adm. Jan Thornqvist told reporters in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa. “The crew members locked themselves in the radar room. This ship has been hijacked.”
The Novorossiysk website said the tanker was apprehended by pirates who opened fire from two small boats: “The company suspects the pirates managed to board the tanker. According to the latest information received from the [ship] none of the 23 seafarers on board have been hurt, the vessel and the cargo sustained no damage.”
The scourge of Somali pirates, who brandish machine guns and travel in speedboats, has forced oil tankers and cargo vessels deeper into the Indian Ocean to avoid hijackings near the Gulf of Aden, which leads to the Red Sea and Suez Canal. But the bandits have adapted, often sailing hundreds of miles off the Yemeni and Somali shores while dodging warships from U.S., Europe and other nations.
The dynamics of Somali pirating may be changing, at least in one lawless cove. Earlier this week, pirates on the coast at Xaradheere fled as Islamic insurgents stormed the town. It was unclear whether the group, known as Hizbul Islam, which has connections to Al Qaeda and has been battling the Somali government for years, will use the base for pirating and hostage taking in attempts to collect millions of dollars in ransom.
Pirates are believed to be holding about 350 hostages and have control of as many as 20 vessels, many of them scattered off the coast of Somalia. Maritime authorities say bandits have attacked hundreds of ships in recent years and have negotiated ransoms estimated to be between $100 million to $200 million.

Thousands Protest In Ukraine Over Russia Fleet Deal
From Radio Free Europe
Several thousand Ukrainians have rallied in front of parliament to protest against a deal allowing Russia to keep its navy in Ukraine’s Crimea for another 25 years.
Former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko told the rally today that all opposition forces must unite to resist the deal, which was signed on April 21.
The protesters, many from opposition parties, held banners with slogans such as “No to the destruction of national sovereignty” and “Out with the Russian Black Sea Fleet.”
Several hundred counterprotesters rallied nearby in support of President Viktor Yanukovych. Continue Reading →
Racial attacks reported in Kyrgyzstan
A Stratfor report came in this morning reporting ‘racist attacks on Russians’ within this enigmatic little former Soviet state, Kyrgystan, which you may recall had a violent coup this week. Here is the Stratfor report:
Kyrgyzstan: Russians Report Attacks – Foreign Ministry
April 15, 2010
Reports of racially motivated attacks on ethnic Russians and Russian nationals in Kyrgyzstan concern Moscow, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said April 15, RIA Novosti reported. Calling the reports grassroots racism, a ministry spokesman said there have been complaints that Russian citizens’ businesses and homes have been attacked throughout Kyrgyzstan.
Below, is a small section of the CIA fact book on that wonderful little country that may help explain these ‘racist’ attacks. i bet I know who is attacking who. Better read it now before Obama has the CIA scrub any little ‘inconvenient truths’ from it.
Kyrgyzstan keeps a tight grip on religion
BBC… Bolot, a young evangelical preacher in Kyrgyzstan, says he has already been arrested twice since setting up a new church.
He says he is the victim of a new law on religion, which critics say severely restricts religious freedoms and is forcing some groups underground.
Under the law, new religious groups have to have at least 200 members before they can register with the authorities and operate legally – previously the figure was 10.
Kyrgyzstan is just the latest Central Asian republic to have been accused of curtailing religious rights.
“In our church we don’t have official registration because we have only 25 people, and we are banned from trying to convert people. We have lots of problems with the government,” Bolot says.
He says the police have been several times to his church, which is based in a house in the capital, Bishkek. Bolot, which is not his real name, says he fears further such visits.
“They asked me to stop the church because it’s against the law. Of course, it’s not comfortable but we will keep going.”
There are now at least 50,000 evangelical Christians in Kyrgyzstan, Bolot says, the majority of them converts from Islam like himself – although the government disputes that figure.
He says the authorities passed the law because they want to prevent Muslims converting to Christianity.
He adds that the government also feels threatened by radical Muslim groups such as Hizb ut-Tahrir, whose goal is to bring all Muslim countries together as a single state, ruled by Islamic law. Continue Reading →

Two police authorities killed, two injured in suicide bomb attacks in Russia’s North Caucasus
RIA Novosti… Two police officers were killed and another two injured in a series of two explosions, at least one of them caused by a suicide bomber, in Russia’s volatile southern province of Ingushetia, local police said on Monday.
It quoted an Ingush police spokesman as saying that the suicide bomber set off an explosive device when he was stopped by security guards at the gates of a police station in the town of Karabulak. A police source said the second blast occurred just minutes after the first, no one was killed or injured.
“He [the suicide bomber] arrived in a car and it was presumed the car was mined,” local police said. “All security measures were taken and as a result, the police’s fears were confirmed when the car exploded.”
Last week two deadly blasts occurred in two Moscow subway stations claiming some 40 lives and injuring dozens more. The attackers struck the Lubyanka and Park Kultury stations about 40 minutes apart during the morning rush hour.
Chechen militant leader Doku Umarov claimed responsibility for the metro attacks, saying in a video message they were revenge for a special operation carried out by federal security forces on February 11, 2010, when 18 militants and four civilians were killed in Ingushetia. He threatened further attacks.
Two days after the Moscow subway blasts another two explosions occurred in the town of Kizlyar, in Dagestan near the border with Chechnya, killing12 people and leaving 29 others injured.
The Russian counter-terrorism committee said the organizers of the recent terrorist attacks in Moscow and Kizlyar and some of the suicide bombers have been identified.
President Dmitry Medvedev said the bombings were all links in the same chain, while Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said a single terrorist group carried out the attacks.
Russia has been fighting militants in the North Caucasus for almost two decades, including two brutal wars against separatists in Chechnya.
