AMMONNEWS – A group of Jordanian lawyers filed a lawsuit in Jordanian courts against the producer of a controversial anti-Islam movie and against Google, the owner of Youtube.
The lawsuit was filed by the Freedoms Committee at the Jordan Bar Association (JBA), represented by Lawyer Nour al-Imam, Mustafa Yaghi, Adel Saqf al-Hayt, and Faisal Khoza’i.
An indictment decision was referred to the specialized courts on April 28, 2013, with the lawyers citing personal right against the movie “Innocence of Muslims,” which sparked major controversy and violent protests over what many Muslims considered as a major offense to the person of Prophet Muhammad.
The case was also filed against the producer of the 14-minute movie Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, and movie director Alan Roberts.
The indictment decision was also filed against Google, the owner of YouTube, for allowing the movie clip to be published on their site.
Egypt’s worrying rise in criminal blasphemy cases
Wow they actually take on a real issue!
Amnesty International
Criminal “defamation of religion” charges must be dropped in a number of cases across Egypt, Amnesty International said today after a teacher was convicted for insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad in the classroom.
A Luxor court on Tuesday fined Coptic Christian teacher Dimyana Obeid Abd Al Nour 100,000 Egyptian pounds (approx. US$14,000) for allegedly insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad during one of her classes. It also referred compensation claims to civil court.
Her criminal conviction bodes ill for others in Egypt who have been facing trial on similar charges which the organization said are aimed at criminalizing criticism of or insult to religious beliefs.
“Slapping criminal charges with steep fines and, in most cases, prison sentences against people for simply speaking their mind or holding different religious beliefs is simply outrageous,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Director.
“So-called ‘defamation of religion’ charges should not be used as a pretext to trample over people’s right to freedom of expression and conscience, and all such charges should be dropped, and the resulting convictions overturned.”
Russia: Religious insult laws a threat to free expression
This from Article 19, a freedom of the press watchdog.
Article 19:

ARTICLE 19 urges politicians to reject plans that will make the ‘insult of religious beliefs and feelings’ a criminal offence in Russia.
Proposals that will be considered by the State Duma tomorrow (11 June 2013) if adopted, will create a prohibition of the defamation of religions in violation of international human rights standards, and in particular in relation to the right to freedom of expression.
The amendments are widely seen to be a reaction to the Pussy Riot case, in which members of the group performed a ‘punk prayer’ inside a Moscow cathedral to protest about the relationship between President Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church.

A Chinese man in Pakistani-administered Kashmir has been taken into protective custody after he was accused of desecrating the Koran, officials say.
The man, named only as Mr Lee, works for a Chinese consortium that is building a dam in Kashmir.
A police official told the BBC that Mr Lee was held to prevent him from being lynched by an angry mob.
Allegations of blasphemy are taken very seriously in Pakistan with a number of controversial recent prosecutions.
Kashmir’s chief of police has assembled a committee of officials, politicians, local clerics and journalists to investigate the matter.
The police have not yet registered a case, saying they will wait for the committee’s report.
This is the first time a foreigner has been accused of desecrating holy scriptures under Pakistan law, the BBC’s Zulfiqar Ali reports.
Mob of ‘hundreds’
An official in the town of Muzaffarabad, close to where the alleged incident took place, said that the accusation was linked to a dispute which had taken place between Mr Lee and a local doctor hired by the consortium.

Egged on by communal acceptance, mob killings of alleged criminals have been spreading across rural areas of Egypt amid a chronic security vacuum and a surging crime rate. These brutal vigilante executions have been on the rise with at least 17 reported since the 2011 revolution.
Sharqiya – the third largest governorate by population, located east of the Nile Delta – is plagued by the most frequent street justice murders. During the last two and a half years, its villages have witnessed over a dozen mob killings.

Montreal terror suspect: Canada’s Criminal Code is not ‘a holy book’ (with video)
H/T M
Montreal Gazette:
TORONTO — A man charged in an alleged al-Qaida-directed plot to attack a Via Rail passenger train suggested in court Wednesday that he doesn’t recognize the authority of the Criminal Code because it is “not a holy book.”
Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, of Montreal, asked to address the Toronto courtroom after the five terrorism charges against him were read out.
They are based on the Criminal Code and “we know that this Criminal Code is not a holy book,” Esseghaier said.
“It’s just written by set of creations and the creations they’re not perfect because only the creator is perfect.”
As a result, he said, the “conclusions taken out from these judgments” are unreliable.
The justice of the peace presiding over the case, who had warned him to be careful what he said, ordered Esseghaier detained until his next appearance May 23 via video from a detention centre.

“Islam tells you, before you become a muslim, these are the rules…
IF YOU’RE IN, YOU’RE IN FOR LIFE, you cannot take back.
The day that you become muslim, then be careful, you cannot go back, it is your choice…
For those muslims who decided they do not want to be muslim anymore, they don’t want to live in the islamic environment, then they can leave, but they cannot live with a muslim country/society, in that they have no choice.”
Said Rageah was born in Somalia, raised in Saudi Arabia, moved to the US in the late 1980s (holds a BA in Islamic studies and a Masters in Sharia from the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in Fairfax, Virginia), served as imam in Maryland and Calgary, then moved to Toronto where he currently serves as an Imam at Abu Huraira Islamic Center.
