Taliban Islamists Nearing Pakistani Nukes

(IsraelNN.com) Israel and the US should be focusing more on the Taliban’s rise in nuclear Pakistan than on Iran’s nuclear aims, more and more experts are saying.

“Pakistan must move to the top of our strategic agenda,” writes former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton. Similarly, “Nuclear Taliban/Al Qaida is a far more ominous threat than nuclear Iran could ever be,” writes Byron Ellis, who heads the international Jethro Project consulting company.

Bolton, writing in The Wall Street Journal on Monday, warns that the U.S. must take “hard steps” to prevent Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal from falling into the hands of Taliban. U.S. President Barack Obama’s statement of confidence last week that the nuclear arsenal will not fall to the terrorists is “not reassuring,” Bolton writes, “in light of the Taliban’s military and political gains throughout Pakistan.”

There is a “tangible risk that several weapons could slip out of military control,” Bolton warns. “Such weapons could then find their way to Al Qaeda or other terrorists, with obvious global implications.” Continue Reading →

Pakistan tottered on the edge of a precipice this week as the Taliban made a concerted push into mountain districts that overlook Islamabad.

Near panic seized Pakistan’s allies, as masked and heavily armed Taliban terrorists invaded the Buner district, just 115 kilometres northwest of the capital Islamabad, overran government offices, looted foreign aid agencies and established makeshift sharia courts that banned everything from music to shaving.

The strategic consequences of the invasion are immense.

It exposed far more than Pakistan’s fragility or Islamabad’s vulnerability. It thrust the worst possible doomsday scenario to centre stage.

The Taliban, backed by al-Qaeda, are now established in a district that straddles two crucial targets.

Just 50 kilometres southeast of Buner lies the Tarbela Dam, the largest earth-filled dam in the world. It provides central Pakistan with most of its electricity and the country’s farmers with most of their water.

Thirty kilometres further on lies the Wah Cantonment, an army ordinance complex that produces almost all of Pakistan’s weapons and military supplies – including nuclear weapons – in a collection of 14 massive factories that employ up to 40,000 people. Continue Reading →

from CNEWS -TORONTO – A Toronto man is facing charges after allegedly trying to send nuclear technology to Iran, a country under intense international pressure to curtail its nuclear ambitions because of fears it wants to produce a bomb.

The RCMP, after a joint eight-week investigation with the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security, allege Mahmoud Yadegari tried to procure and export pressure transducers, which are used in the production of enriched uranium.

The UN Security Council banned exports of nuclear-related technology to Iran in 2006 because of what it considers efforts to build nuclear weapons.

The transducers, which are hand-sized, have a legitimate commercial use, the RCMP said, but they can also be used for military purposes.

“They’re critical components used in a larger device in order to enrich uranium for weapons grade product,” RCMP Insp. Greg Johnson said at a news conference Friday.

The man purchased ten of the transducers from a Boston-area company for about $1,100 each, the RCMP said. Police declined to release the name of the U.S. company that sold the transducers or the name of the company owned by Yadegari, who police said is a Toronto businessman in his mid-30s.

The police said the man set off suspicions with the Boston-area firm when he said he planned to ship the transducers to Toronto and then on to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

“We have evidence to support the fact that its ultimate destination was Iran,” said Johnson.

It’s alleged Yadegari took steps to conceal the identification of the transducers so he could export them overseas without the required export permits.

Yadegari is charged under the Customs Act and Export Import Permits Act, and is also accused of violating U.N. sanctions on Iran. He is a Canadian citizen who emigrated from Iran in 1998, and is in custody awaiting a bail hearing next week, police said.

Penalties under the Export Act alone include fines of up to $1,000,000 and up to 10 years in prison.

Iran insists it is enriching uranium to produce nuclear energy for civilian purposes, but the United States and some European countries accuse Tehran of secretly seeking to build nuclear weapons.

Iran has all of the components and required materials for a bomb, said George Webb of the Canada Border Services Agency.

“What they have to do is take it and enrich that material to a very high level,” said Webb. “I don’t personally believe that they are there yet. However, they’re very, very, very close.”

Project American Shield, a program run by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement branch of Homeland Security, has agents meeting with manufacturers of technologies that can be used in nuclear production in order to alert them to suspicious purchases by foreigners.

“We make them aware of red-flag indicators of suspicious activity and what they should do when they encounter suspicious inquiry from abroad,” said the ICE’s Tim Gildea.

Those suspicious indicators include someone looking to pay cash, and probably too high a price for the technology, expressing an urgent need for the material or proposing a circuitous shipping route.

The charges against Yadegari follow an investigation by the RCMP, Canada Customs agents, The Dept. of Foreign Affairs and Homeland Security.

In February, U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration said it would seek to end Iran’s nuclear ambition and its support for terrorism.

That drew an immediate rebuke from Iran’s envoy to the United Nations, who said Iran has never and will never try to acquire nuclear weapons.

Ukraine Says 3 Tried to Sell Nuclear Bomb Material

MOSCOW — The metal cylinder supposedly contained eight pounds of plutonium 239, a highly dangerous radioactive material that could be used in a nuclear weapon or a dirty bomb. The price: $10 million, sought by three Ukrainian men, officials said Tuesday.

The men did not make a sale, the officials said, but were arrested in an undercover operation in Ukraine last week that was conducted by the Ukrainian Security Service. Still, while the plot was foiled, it underscored longstanding concerns that unsecured radioactive material in the former Soviet Union might fall into the wrong hands.

Marina Ostapenko, a spokeswoman for the Ukrainian Security Service, said it had turned out that the radioactive material was not plutonium 239. A preliminary analysis indicated that the material was most likely americium, a much more common and less potent radioactive material, Ms. Ostapenko said in a telephone interview from Kiev, the Ukrainian capital.

She said americium could be deployed in a dirty bomb but not in a nuclear weapon.

“They wanted to sell it as plutonium,” she said. “They were asking for $10 million for it because they thought that it was plutonium.”

Ms. Ostapenko declined to disclose further details and she would not identify the three men who were arrested, other than to say that one was a lawmaker in the western region of Ternopol, and the other two were local businessmen.

The men were arrested last Thursday and charged with illegally handling radioactive materials. If convicted, they could face up to 15 years in prison, officials said.

In a statement, the Ukrainian Security Service said it had determined that the radioactive material was produced in Russia before the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991 and might have been smuggled into Ukraine from a nearby country.

Ukraine has no nuclear weapons, though it does have nuclear reactors and was the site of the Chernobyl accident. All of the former Soviet republics have repudiated nuclear weapons, with the exception of Russia, which inherited the Soviet arsenal.

Experts have repeatedly warned that poor safeguards, political instability and widespread corruption in the former Soviet republics could make it possible for people to obtain nuclear materials and sell them.

The American government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in recent years to try to help governments in Russia, Ukraine and other former republics protect nuclear materials.

In 2006, officials in the former Soviet republic of Georgia aressted a Russian man who was offering to sell 100 grams of highly refined uranium, about 3.5 ounces, for $1 million. The Russian was made to believe by undercover agents that the radioactive material was to be delivered to a Muslim organization.

In an Ininterview conducted shortly before he was sworn in today as prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu laid down a challenge for Barack Obama. The American president, he said, must stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons—and quickly—or an imperiled Israel may be forced to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities itself.

“The Obama presidency has two great missions: fixing the economy, and preventing Iran from gaining nuclear weapons,” Netanyahu told me. He said the Iranian nuclear challenge represents a “hinge of history” and added that “Western civilization” will have failed if Iran is allowed to develop nuclear weapons.

In unusually blunt language, Netanyahu said of the Iranian leadership, “You don’t want a messianic apocalyptic cult controlling atomic bombs. When the wide-eyed believer gets hold of the reins of power and the weapons of mass death, then the entire world should start worrying, and that is what is happening in Iran.”

History teaches Jews that threats against their collective existence should be taken seriously, and, if possible, preempted, he suggested. In recent years, the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has regularly called for Israel to be “wiped off the map,” and the supreme Iranian leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, this month called Israel a “cancerous tumor.”

But Netanyahu also said that Iran threatens many other countries apart from Israel, and so his mission over the next several months is to convince the world of the broad danger posed by Iran. One of his chief security advisers, Moshe Ya’alon, told me that a nuclear Iran could mean the end of American influence in the Middle East. “This is an existential threat for Israel, but it will be a blow for American interests, especially on the energy front. Who will dominate the oil in the region—Washington or Tehran?”

Here is the audio of a 2 hour interview with Nick at Night from Ottawa’s CFRA. This is an excellent interview by a member of the inteligence community who spoke about various threats from Islam in the west and infiltration of various institutions as well as Iran and its nuclear ambitions.

He also exposes the true agenda and numbers of the ‘immigration industry’ as being a fraud as it is a net loss to Canada to import hundreds of thousands of people with a mean average age of sixty five and many of whom need expeonsive medical care and take social benefits.

Nevertheless, let’s try. In the Swat Valley, where a young Winston Churchill once served with the Malakand Field Force battling Muslim insurgents, his successors have concluded the game isn’t worth the candle. In return for a temporary ceasefire, the Pakistani government agreed to let the local franchise of the Taliban impose its industrial strength version of sharia across the whole of Malakand Region. If “region” sounds a bit of an imprecise term, Malakand has over five million people, all of whom are now living under a murderous theocracy. Still, peace rallies have broken out all over the Swat Valley, and, at a Swat peace rally, it helps to stand well back: As one headline put it, “Journalist Killed While Covering Peace Rally.”

But don’t worry about Pakistani nukes falling into the hands of “extremists”: The Swat Valley is a good hundred miles from the “nation”‘s capital, Islamabad — or about as far as Northern Vermont is from Southern Vermont. And, of course, Islamabad is safely under the control of the famously moderate Ali Zardari. A few days before the Swat deal, Mr. Zardari marked the dawn of the Obama era by releasing from house arrest A. Q. Khan, the celebrated scientist and one-stop shop for all your Islamic nuclear needs, for whose generosity North Korea and Iran are especially grateful.

Iran, nuclear weapons and the big question.

According to a Stratfor.com’s assessment of the recent IAEA report, Iran has significantly higher amounts of low enriched uranium, yet a slow down of progress at a processing plant and a dome built at the Arak heavy water facility in order to prevent satellite photos from being taken. Also, only 136 new centrifuges have been built to augment Iran’s existing 3600 centrifuge cascades.

I will do my best to decrypt this information. I am certain I will make many errors. Anyone wishing to correct any factual errors would be most appreciated should they choose to do so in the comments section below this article.

To make a bomb by enriching U238 into U235 you need to have approximately 93%+ pure U235. To make fuel for a reactor you need 5% or less. Low enriched presumably means way more than enough for a reactor but perhaps not quite enriched enough to make nuclear weapons.

Iran appears to have a two fold plan for the manufacture of nuclear weapons simultaneously. One, is the refinement of U238 into U235 by means of high speed centrifuges to isolate the U235 from the host ore, U238. The refined product post centrifuge is easily made into materials that will detonate a nuclear explosion of the kind we are so familiar with. I wish to be clear on this as there are many terms often used which are confused for each other and which are themselves confusing. U235 with little technology can be fashioned into a nuclear bomb of a Hiroshima or larger size weapon fairly easily. The difficulty comes from obtaining the material to detonate, the U235. Iran is reported to have as stated above, 3600 + 136 arrays presumably working 24/7 to obtain the necessary materials for a bomb. It is through the use of these centrifuges designed and sold by Pakistani nuclear technician A. Q. Khan that this material, U235 is produced. Please watch this documentary for a good in depth analysis on Khan and his centrifuges and how they are used to make nuclear weapons.

I have no idea how many bombs of what size can be produced per unit time using this method but the IAEA some years ago stated they believed that Iran had enough refined U235 to make 10 bombs and that was years ago.

The second method is reprocessing Uranium after it has been through a nuclear reactor for another isotope, ‘plutonium’. If you have the right kind of reactor and reprocessing plant weapons grade plutonium is relatively easy to get but making the bomb is quite difficult. Instead of needing 2 polished hemispheres of U235 which are forced to slam together with a common explosive like Semtex, a commercial plastic explosive, plutonium needs to be made into a complex array of parts of a sphere with very precisely machined explosives all around in complex geometries. In the US, these are sculpted by experts using remote control robots carefully crafted at distances away of miles and monitored on screens. In essence, a U235 bomb is easy to make but the materials are hard to get. A plutonium bomb is hard to make but the materials are easy to get. Both kinds of bombs are still massive public works projects of course. The US project for the first atomic weapons may have been the largest public works project ever done including the pyramids up to that point.

Many speculate that Iran is playing at developing nuclear weapons as a bargaining chip to gain access and authority in Iraq. North Korea seems to have done the same except they did indeed develop nukes and have been instrumental in assisting Iran and it’s partial proxy Syria in developing the technology to build weapons of the plutonium variety as we see from this recent report on the isotopes found at the Syrian facility bombed over a year ago by Israel.

So lets examine what is known about Iran and nuclear weapons.

Iran seems to be doing everything possible to manufacture them and makes frequent albeit veiled references to their intended use on Israel and the USA.

The UN based IAEA has made statements saying that Iran likely has the materials to make several nuclear weapons. The UN itself, seems to be a pawn in many ways of the OIC so one may choose to accept that the UN would understate the development program to facilitate Iran’s program or one may not. Even if you do not the IAEA seems to indicate that development is advanced.

Several reports show that Syria was indeed using North Korean technology to develop nuclear weapons of the plutonium variety from the CIA to Israeli intel, including today’s reports on various specific isotopes that where found at the site the Israeli’s bombed a little over a year ago.

The USA is so keen on placing anti ballistic missile sites in the Caucasus and central Europe against Iranian missiles they are prepared to have serious conflicts with Russia on the matter. Ultimately Russia may choose to join the project as both parties seem to feel the Iranian threat is real. Russia actually has more to worry about from Iran than the US does in some ways which may explain why Russia delayed building a reactor for Iran for over 12 years past its promised operational date. However, more and more evidence is appearing that Iran intends to use its nukes to create an EMP effect, which would have more devestating consequences to the US and the west than a direct strike on a city.

Here is a link to an excellent Stratfor analysis about the Iranians nuclear weapons program. There is tons of really solid information here. However I suspect that the Iranians have and are capable, of moving a lot faster than they predicted. This article was written before the recent tests of 2 stage solid fuel rocket tests which would indicate an ability to launch a nuclear weapon in position for an EMP. It is well worth reading anyway. Most of that they say does apply and stratfor gets more right than wrong. But I wonder if they would revise this now. Iran seems qutie advanced on the programs and the US and Russia clearly take it very seriously.

Lastly, I would suggest to anyone interested in this subject to sit back and watch this most excellent lecture on the manufacture of nuclear weapons and as en passant remarks, the speaker, a professor of nuclear physics at Cal Tech, explains much of the reasons for the Iraq invasion and the WMD issue there. Cal Tech is where nuclear weapons where invented. It really is a fantastic lecture.

I will be updating and editing this for some time for clarity as I think this is an important subject and one on which information is scarce, obtuse and usually incomprehensible. I very much would like to make this a sort of decoder ring for much popular press reporting on the issue. Most reporters of course have little understanding of the issues and so do not represent the information at all well. Washington sent Special Forces into Pakistan last summer after intercepting a call by the Pakistani army chief referring to a notorious Taleban leader as a “strategic asset,” a new book has claimed.

The intercept was ordered to confirm suspicions that the Pakistani military were still actively supporting the Taleban whilst taking millions of dollars in US military aid to fight them, according to the “The Inheritance,” by the New York Times correspondent David Sanger.

In a transcript passed to Mike McConnell, the Director of National Intelligence in May 2008, General Ashfaq Kayani, the military chief who replaced Pervez Musharraf, was overheard referring to Maulavi Jalaluddin Haqqani as “a strategic asset”. The remark was the first real evidence of the double game that Washington had long suspected President Musharraf was playing as he continued receiving US military aid while aiding the Taleban.

Mr Haqqani, a veteran of the anti-Soviet mujahidin wars of the nineties, commands a hardline Taleban group based in Waziristan and is credited with introducing suicide bombing into themilitants’ arsenal.

Washington later intercepted calls from Pakistani military units to Mr Haqqani, warning him of an impending military operation d esigned to prove to the US that Islamabad was tackling the militant threat.

“They must have dialled 1-800-HAQQANI” a source told Mr Sanger. “It was something like, ‘Hey, we’re going to hit your place in a few days, so if anyone important is there, you might want to tell them to scram’.”

The intercept was the clue that led the CIA to uncover evidence of collusion between the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence agency (ISI) and Mr Haqqani in a plot to carry out a spectacular bombing in Afghanistan. Two weeks later, India’s Embassy in Kabul was bombed, killing fifty-four people and prompting a CIA mission to Islamabad to challenge the government with their evidence.

The first cross-border strike took place in early September without Islamabad’s knowledge after Washington concluded that no one could be trusted with the information.

General Kayani, a former ISI chief, became army chief when Mr Musharraf relinquished that post in 2007, a year before he was forced to quit as president. Worryingly for Washington, General Kayani remains Pakistan’s army chief.

Mr Musharraf reacted angrily to the book’s allegations of double-dealing, which appeared in the Pakistani press for the first time yesterday. “Get your facts correct, I have never double-dealt,” Mr Musharraf told Pakistani television stations.

“There is a big conspiracy being hatched against Pakistan, to weaken the Pakistan army and the ISI to weaken Pakistan.”

Mr Sanger’s book, detailing the foreign policy challenges inherited by the Obama Administration, was published in the US last month. In it, US intelligence officials also speak of their fears that Islamist militants might launch a spectacular attack on Indian soil in the hope of ramping up tensions on the subcontinent, leading Pakistan to deploy its nuclear weapons

Cheney warns of serious terrorist attacks

Here is a link to an interview with Dick Cheney who now feels free to talk about his decisions and the threat of terror, the new Obama administration who he believes does not understand the threat yet and and article about Mr. Cheney as well. This is well worth the time to read and to listen to the short interview with him. Below is an excerpt….

Cheney said “the ultimate threat to the country” is “a 9/11-type event where the terrorists are armed with something much more dangerous than an airline ticket and a box cutter – a nuclear weapon or a biological agent of some kind” that is deployed in the middle of an American city.

“That’s the one that would involve the deaths of perhaps hundreds of thousands of people, and the one you have to spend a hell of a lot of time guarding against,” he said.

“I think there’s a high probability of such an attempt. Whether or not they can pull it off depends whether or not we keep in place policies that have allowed us to defeat all further attempts, since 9/11, to launch mass-casualty attacks against the United States.”

More on the Al Queda Algeria plague story

On Monday, the Sun ran a story reporting that 40 terrorists from AQIM had died of plague in a terrorist training camp in Tizi Ouzou. Yesterday, Eli Lake from the Washington Times confirmed through one of his source in the U.S. intelligence community that an incident had taken place at a training camp that had to be shut down as a result. The deaths were not confirmed though.

A few observations at this point that give credence to this story, which has not received the coverage it deserves:
1- There has been a total black out from the Algerian media that has not even mentioned one line about this story.

2- Algerian authorities have been totally silent at this time: I suspect that they have not been too happy about the story leaking through British and American sources.

3- Coincidence or not: 60 terrorists from AQIM from Tizi Ouzou (the same region where the incident allegedly occurred) miraculously just decided they wanted to surrender to the authorities; this is very rare that such a large number of AQIM operatives defect at the same time. That tells me that possibly they got really scared of what had taken place in the training camp and do not want to get involved with any biological weapon experimentation that could possibly result in their deaths.

4- Over a year ago, Pakistani terrorists came to train in AQIM training camps and may have one way or another contributed to the production of that biological agent. Interestingly, the Washington Times mentions that AQIM leaders had contacted AQ Central in Pakistan to tell them about the mishap.

5- AQ operatives in Europe had tried to develop biological weapons in the recent past. In France, Menad Benchelalli, a terrorist specialized in poisons had produced small amounts of ricin and Botulinum toxin that he intended to release in France. He was arrested in 2002.
Then in 2003, British authorities arrested seven individuals accused of also producing ricin.

6- AQIM was “hired” by AQ central mostly because of his extensive network in Europe that could allow them to strike Europe at some point. AQIM’s leadership has been under intense pressure to attack European targets in order to maintain its credibility.
I suspect that possibly this biological weapon was destined for delivery in Europe. In fact, by not using a “conventional” weapon, AQIM would prove its value to AQ Central.

Final scary implication: if this story is true, then with such a virulent disease like plague having infected individuals, these persons need to be quarantined as soon as possible and the authorities need to track down whomever they have been in contact with.
Also even more worrisome, imagine if one of the infected individuals board a flight to Paris, London or New York, this person could be the means of “delivering” the weapon.
The damage could be enormous.

But that schadenfreude may be misplaced. One question being investigated is whether the North African fanatics fell victim to the naturally-occurring pathogen or the possibility the group mistakenly released the killer bug while brewing it for terror attacks. This incident provides the Obama administration the impetus to assess whether our nation is prepared for a bioterrorist attack.

The Algerian terrorist franchise, al-Qaeda in the land of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), is the largest al-Qaeda group outside the Middle East. AQIM has a deadly terrorism record and a declared intention to attack American targets which makes the potential bioterrorism threat credible but not a surprise for American experts.

Last year, Dr. Jeffrey Runge, chief medical officer at the US Department of Homeland Security, told Congress that the risk of a large-scale biological attack on the nation is significant and the US knows its terrorist enemies have sought biological weapons. Runge said al-Qaeda is the most significant threat.

Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has long shown an active interest in biological weapons. In the late 1990s, bin Laden set-up 19 chemical and biological weapons laboratories in Afghanistan stocking them with deadly pathogens: anthrax, plague, and botulinum toxins. He hired Ukrainian and Russian experts to train his people and, according to then-CIA director George Tenet, bin Laden trained his operatives “…to conduct attacks with toxic chemicals or biological toxins.”

The group’s biological weapons expert, Midhat Mursi al-Sayid Umar, who was reportedly killed by a US missile in 2008, published a 5,000-page encyclopedia of jihad devoted to chemical biological warfare (CBW). Al-Sayid’s manual, which is available in print and on the Internet, provides instructions on how to manufacture rudimentary biological weapons.
