US Official: Bulgaria suicide bomber confirmed to be Hezbollah member

A senior U.S. official confirmed Israel’s assertions Thursday that the suicide bomber who killed five Israelis in an attack here Wednesday was a member of a Hezbollah cell operating in Bulgaria.

The official said the current U.S. intelligence assessment is that the bomber was “acting under broad guidance” to hit Israeli targets when the opportunity presented itself. That guidance was given to Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group, by its primary sponsor, Iran, he said.

A woman hairdresser has been convicted of planning a terror attack in the Jewish neighbourhood of a city.

Shasta Khan, 38, and her husband, Mohammed Sajid Khan, 33, bought substances and equipment from supermarkets to assemble an improvised explosive device.

Police found a cache of terror-related material after being called to a domestic dispute at the couple’s home in Oldham, Greater Manchester, last July.

Bulgarian media on Thursday named the suicide bomber who blew up a bus full of Israeli tourists, killing five Israelis and a local bus driver, in the Black Sea resort of Burgas on Wednesday as Mehdi Ghezali.

There was no independent confirmation of the veracity of the information. The reports surfaced soon after Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had publicly accused Hezbollah, directed by Iran, of responsibility for the bombing. The Prime Minister’s Office made no comment on the reports.

The Bulgarian reports, rapidly picked up by Hebrew media, posited various versions of how the bomber had detonated the bomb, including the suggestion that the bomber had not intended to die in the blast, but may have wanted to place the bomb on the bus and flee.

Ghezali was reportedly a Swedish citizen, with Algerian and Finnish origins. He had been held at the US’s Guantanamo Bay detainment camp on Cuba from 2002 to 2004, having previously studied at a Muslim religious school and mosque in Britain, and traveled to Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. He was released to Swedish custody in 2004, and the Swedish government did not press charges. He was also reportedly among 12 foreigners captured trying to cross into Afghanistan in 2009.

Reactions to Today’s Terror Attack on Israeli Tourists in Bulgaria

A bus carrying Israeli tourists at Bulgaria’s Burgas airport suddenly exploded today, killing seven and wounding at least 30 more.

• A U.N. spokesperson said that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack “in the strongest possible terms.” In fact, however, the U.N. chief’s choice of terms was weak in comparison to his statement two weeks ago on the bombing of churches in Kenya. In that case, Mr. Ban rightly spoke of “terrorist” attacks, “reprehensible and criminal,” saying the perpetrators “must be held to account.” Yet today he referred only to the deadly “bombing” of Israelis — noticeably declining to describe it as an act of terrorism — and he made no call for holding the perpetrators to account. UN Watch today urged Mr. Ban to clarify his position and to truly use the strongest possible terms to condemn today’s terrorist attack.

Five people charged with terrorism offences

Five people from London have been charged with terrorism offences.

Three men have been charged with preparing for acts of terrorism while a man and a woman have been charged with possessing terrorist documents.

Those charged are Richard Dart, 29, from Ealing; Imran Mahmood, 21, from Northolt; Jahangir Alom, 26, from Stratford; and Ruksana Begum, 22, from Hoxton.

Also charged was Khalid Baqa, 47, from Barking.

All five will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Four of those charged were arrested earlier in the month during a Metropolitan Police operation, while Mr Baqa was detained on Wednesday.

Mr Dart, Mr Mahmood and Mr Alom are charged that “between 25 July 2010 and 6 July 2012, with the intention of committing acts of terrorism or assisting another to commit such acts, engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to his intention”.

HSBC has been accused of handling money from Mexican drugs cartels and working alongside a Saudi Arabian bank with links to international terrorism following a probe by the U.S. Senate.

An explosive report claims a ‘pervasively polluted’ culture at the bank led it to act as financier to clients seeking to route shadowy funds from the world’s most dangerous and secretive corners, including Mexico, Iran, the Cayman Islands, Saudi Arabia and Syria.

The Senate probe detailed how sweeping the problems have been, both at the bank and at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, a top U.S. bank regulator which the report said failed to properly monitor HSBC.

‘The culture at HSBC was pervasively polluted for a long time,’ said Senator Carl Levin, chairman of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, a Congressional watchdog panel.

The report comes at a troubling time for a banking industry reeling from a multi-country probe into the manipulation of global benchmark rates.

Last month, rival British bank Barclays Plc agreed to pay a $453 million fine to settle a U.S.- British probe into the rigging of the benchmark interest rate known as the London interbank offered rate, or Libor.

A Quebec activist who fought the stereotyping of Muslims was charged with supporting terrorism on Friday after an RCMP investigation linked her to an alleged scheme to smuggle weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Mouna Diab, 26, was charged with committing a crime “for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a terrorist group,” the RCMP said in a statement. She faces a possible life sentence if convicted.

The Laval woman was arrested at Montreal’s Trudeau airport last year and accused of violating an international arms embargo targeting Lebanon, but police added the far more serious terrorism charge on Friday.

Sweden’s International Aid Services (IAS) confirmed Friday that three of its employees kidnapped in Somalia this week were in the hands of pirates and called for their release.

The two Kenyan aid workers and a Somali doctor were kidnapped in northern Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region on Wednesday.

“It has now been confirmed that a certain pirate group was involved. The hostages are reported well and have been taken to a known location under the control of pirates,” IAS said in a statement Friday.

“No demands have so far been presented by the group.”

IAS said it was in talks with several groups in Kenya and Somalia but refused to name either the kidnappers or where its employees were being held.

The agency “condemns this serious act of aggression against humanitarian staff in the strongest terms,” it said.

“We urge the attackers to immediately and unconditionally release our staff,” it said.

The prosecution alleges that couple began “to make preparations to carry out a terrorist attack on British soil, with the most likely target being an Orthodox Jewish area in Prestwich. Between them they made preparations, and acquired substances bought in supermarkets and information to help them in making explosives, and began the process of assembling an improvised explosive device.”

The alleged al-Qaeda militant was caught crossing through the Olympic Park five times, breaking a ban imposed by the Home Secretary, The Sunday Telegraph has learned.

The 24 year-old has previously tried to get to Afghanistan, allegedly for terrorist training, and is suspected of fighting for the Somali Islamist group al Shabaab, which has been responsible for thousands of deaths, including those of Western aid workers. He is accused of trying to recruit other Britons to its cause.

A Home Office lawyer warned after his discovery in the Olympic area that the man – known as CF – wanted to “re-engage in terrorism-related activities, either in the UK or Somalia” and is “determined to continue to adhere to his Islamist extremist agenda”.

His detention is the most serious security alert yet to hit the Olympic Park.

It is disclosed today after a week which saw 14 terror-related arrests across Britain, including a white Muslim convert detained over an alleged plan to carry out a major terrorist attack.
