Tunisia: Democracy further eroded
The National Body for the Reform of Information and Communication (INRIC under its French acronym) established after the revolution to reform Tunisian media, has announced today 4 July that it has shut down after failing to achieve its objective, accusing the government of censorship.
“The body does not see the point in continuing its work and announces that it has terminated its work,” said Kamel Labidi, who headed the INRIC. Labidi justified the decision by saying the government had reverted to “censorship and disinformation.”
INRIC was created after the revolution that overthrew president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January last year to reform the media sector, and particularly state media organs, to guarantee Tunisia’s previously restricted press freedom.
ARTICLE 19 worked closely with INRIC throughout 2011 to support its work through the provision of legal and technical assistance.
“INRIC and the various reforms it instituted were considered by many within the human rights community as the most successful democratic undertakings of the post-revolution phase. Its closure today and the reasons behind it testify to the large democratic retreat experienced by the country since the October elections. The sole responsibility for this regression lies with the Tunisian Government. ” says Dr. Agnes Callamard, ARTICLE 19 Executive Director.

A few months ago, in a blog post, I wondered whether the Syrian jihadist rebels were taking advantaging of the chaos the country is in to destroy symbols of the country’s Christian heritage, like the famous crusader castle of Krak des Chevalier. As these images of plundered churches show, it is now clear that they have gone much further than that.

Egypt’s Mohamed Morsi wants to renew ties with Iran
It should be noted that Egypt cut ties with Iran when Iran named a main boulevard in its capital city after the man who shot Sadat because Sadat made peace with Israel. The fact that the Brotherhood desires renewed and stronger ties with Iran is a very strong statement on many levels not the least of which is a move against nationalism and towards a caliphate, even if the Sunni/Shia schism remains unresolved.

Egypt‘s Islamist President-elect Mohamed Morsi voiced interest in restoring long-severed ties with Tehran to create a strategic “balance” in the region, in an interview published on Monday with Iran‘s Fars news agency.
Morsi’s comments are likely to unsettle Western powers as they try to isolate Iran over its disputed nuclear program, which they suspect it is using to develop a nuclear weapons capability. Tehran denies this.
Since former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was toppled by a popular uprising last year, both countries have signalled their interest in renewing ties which were severed more than 30 years ago.

“We must restore normal relations with Iran based on shared interests, and expand areas of political coordination and economic cooperation because this will create a balance of pressure in the region,” Morsi was quoted as saying in a transcript of the interview.
Fars said it had spoken to Morsi a few hours before Sunday’s announcement that declared him the winner of Egypt’s presidential election.
Asked to comment on reports that, if elected, his first state visit would be to Riyadh, Morsi said: “I didn’t say such a thing and until now my first international visits following my victory in the elections have not been determined.”
Rivalry between Sunni Muslim Saudi Arabia and Shi’ite Iran has been intensified by the “Arab Spring” revolts, which have redrawn the political map of the Middle East and left the powerful Gulf neighbors vying for influence.
Iran hailed Morsi’s victory over former general Ahmed Shafik in Egypt’s first free presidential election as a “splendid vision of democracy” that marked the country’s “Islamic Awakening”.
Western diplomats say in reality Egypt has little real appetite to significantly change relations with Iran, given the substantial issues the new president already has to face in cementing relations with regional and global powers.

Salafists protest in Tunis(ANSAmed) – TUNIS – Salafis have gone on the rampage in many Tunisian cities, with the destruction of property and the setting on fire of police stations, party and union headquarters and even a lorry transporting alcoholic beverages. The rioting started over the night in Tunis and then spread to many other cities in the country (such as Sousse and Jendouba), which saw extremely violent episodes fostered by hundreds of Salafis. In some situations the police were forced to shoot into the air in the attempt to quell the rioting, such as in the Ettahir municipality, where in this way they managed to prevent a group of policemen from being attacked by hundreds of Salafis armed with clubs and stones. The extremists’ protest began in the northern outskirts of the capital and especially in Marsa, where the gallery of art is located which – through its exhibition of works held to be immoral by Salafis – sparked their reaction. From Marsa the rioting spread to the southern suburbs to the edges of Carthage, where the presidential palace is located, under military guard the entire night.

The bloodbath in Syria has no end. The president Bashar al Assad has allegedly committed a number of massacres against the civil population. The pictures and accounts of the eyewitnesses about executions of women and children spread around the globe and cause horror. While the international community increases the political pressure on the syrian regime, german islamists see the arrival of the time for “holy war” against the dictator Assad. Radical preachers call, through video messages, to jihad.
The german security forces are alarmed. They are afraid that islamists from the federal republic could see the conflict in Syria as an occasion to take part in the fight against the Assad Regime. According to security reports, radical islamists have still not been registered leaving for Syria. But this could change soon. “Syria could turn into a destination for jihadists from abroad”, the investigator said to the newspaper “Die Welt”, “The country could possibly turn into an attractive destination for german islamists in order to engage in armed jihad.”
German islamists were in the last years traveling in successive waves to Irak, to the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan (Waziristan), and to Somalia in order to undertake trainings in terrorist camps. Syria was up to this date no attractive destination for belligerent extremists. If Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood candidate for president Mohammed Mursi (above) wins, Egypt’s capital moves from Cairo to Jerusalem. So stated a leading Islamic leader, Safwat Hagazy, during a recent campaign rally as Mursi and MB head honcho Mohammed Badei looked on.
Outrageous? Fantastic? Not in Muslimworld. As crack Islamic law expert Stephen Coughlin pointed out to me today, the 2008 charter of the Organization of the Islamic conference similarly calls for OIC’s “permanent headquarters” to be moved to Jerusalem after the city’s “liberation.”
Article 21 of the OIC Charter:
The Headquarters of the General Secretariat shall be in the city of Jeddah until the liberation of the city of Al Quds so that it will become the permanent Headquarters of the Organisation.
Al Quds is the Islamic name for Jerusalem.
The OIC is the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (it used to be known as the Organization of the Islamic Conference). With 56 Islamic member states represented by heads of state and foreign ministers, it is the largest voting bloc on the international stage, a unified front to advance Islam and its laws across the world.

Hardly surprising, deeply upsetting, and geostrategically catastrophic, it’s official. Turkey has now passed over towards being an Islamist state. That turning point is marked by a tiny event of gigantic importance.
Fazil Say is an internationally acclaimed Turkish classical pianist. He has performed with prestigious symphony orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Berlin, Israel Philharmonic, France, and Tokyo, and is a European Union cultural ambassador. The Turkish state is now going to put him on trial, as an Istanbul court has accepted the prosecutor’s charge, which amounts to heresy. Specifically: he is accused of insulting Islam because of tweets he sent.
Say suggested that since the Koran says there are rivers of drinks in heaven, that makes it sound like a pub, while the beautiful women available there make it sound like a brothel. A number of his tweets are quoted here. That’s his crime — writing a couple of sentences to describe his thoughts.
We are not talking of someone criticizing Say or disagreeing with him. We are talking about the power of the Turkish state being used to charge a man with a crime and to send him to prison for exercising free speech. True, they are only asking for a sentence of eighteen months in prison, but once the precedent is set their ambitions will expand.
US Embassy office in eastern Libya comes under attack

TRIPOLI, Libya – Attackers set off a bomb next to a wall of the U.S. Consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi Wednesday, the State Department said, causing no casualties.
The blast underlined the unstable security situation in Libya, more than seven months after the death of deposed dictator Muammar Qaddafi.
It came two weeks before the country is scheduled to hold its first post-Qaddafi national elections.
In a brief comment, the State Department said that there were no injuries or claim of responsibility. It said the bomb “exploded at a perimeter wall.”
Libya’s news agency, LANA, quoted a security official as saying the bomb was probably locally made.
Violence and disorder has plagued Libya since Qaddafi was captured and killed last October after an eight-month civil war.

The building of the “Bilal cultural and religious centre”, begun 2 years ago, was at a standstill. The first 600.000 euros collected by the regional muslim community were entirely spent. “They need to know that conquest is coming, that Egypt will be Islamic, and that they must pay jizya or emigrate,” Morsi reportedly said.
According to the popular Egyptian website, El Bashayer, Muhammad Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood presidential candidate, just declared that he will “achieve the Islamic conquest (fath) of Egypt for the second time, and make all Christians convert to Islam, or else pay the jizya,” the additional Islamic tax, or financial tribute, required of non-Muslims, or financial tribute.
In a brief report written by Samuel al-Ashay and published by El Bashayer on May 27, Morsi allegedly made these comments while speaking with a journalist at the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, adding “We will not allow Ahmed Shafiq [his contending presidential candidate] or anyone else to impede our second Islamic conquest of Egypt.”
After his interviewer pointed out that the first Muslim conquest of Egypt was “carried out at the hands of Amr bin al-As [in 641],” he asked Morsi, “Who will the second Islamic conqueror be?” Morsi, replied, “The second Muslim conqueror will be Muhammad Morsi,” referring to himself, “and history will record it.”
