A successful businesswoman has told of her agony after being forced into an abusive marriage at the age of five – despite living in Britain.
Samina Shah, who is now in her 40s and too frightened to reveal her real name, spoke out after revelations that Britain’s Forced Marriage Unit had handled the case of another five-year-old girl last year.
Mrs Shah said she believed she was being dressed for her fifth birthday party on the day of the Islamic ceremony which effectively ended her childhood.
She told The Sun: ‘There was a lot of activity – a lot of relatives in the house. I was dressed up in an outfit which my mother-in-law had bought for me.
‘My sister told me later that my mother-in-law had said, “At last, the beautiful girl belongs to me!”‘
Pondering why a tiny girl from a large northern town would be forced to undergo such an ordeal, she said she thought it was to do with maintaining tradition – and control.
Mrs Shah was born into a close-knit Asian community, and while her family lived in Britain they remained true to the conventions of remote Pakistani villages.
Aged just 13, she was removed from school without explanation. Instead of an education, she was taught that a woman’s place was in the home – and reminded that the greater her sufferings on earth, the more lavish her reward would be in Paradise.
Samina was still a frightened girl of 14 when she went through the formal wedding ceremony which marked her transition from her parents’ house to that of her husband. At 6am the day after, she was forced onto a plane to Pakistan, told only that she would return to Britain with her husband when she reached 16.
Long before that time, the teenager endured the forced consummation of her marriage after suffering an appalling beating.

Seven of the men arrived at Liverpool Crown Court for the start of the trial on Tuesday, the four others are in custodyA group of 11 men plied girls as young as 13 with drink and drugs so they could use them for sex, a court has heard.
The offences are said to have happened in and around Rochdale, Greater Manchester, in 2008 and 2009.
Liverpool Crown Court heard how the men, aged between 22 and 59 and from Oldham and Rochdale, “acted together to sexually exploit the girls”.
All deny conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child under 16.
Rachel Smith, opening the case for the prosecution, said one 13-year-old fell pregnant to one of the defendants and had an abortion.
She said another girl felt flattered by the attention but that she quickly became regularly heavily drunk, depressed and “incapable of getting herself out of the situation”.
I think 10 years ago, I could never ever possibly have managed to imagine myself writing that headline. Ever. In fact I think I would have cursed out anyone who would have suggested such a thing was going to happen.
Once again, it must be said. The values imparted by a particular culture/faith/religious system etc. are what determines the actions of a people. The fact this couple people felt what they did was OK as well as so very many similar stories about Muslims throughout the world is not an isolated case. These are not exceptions. While there may not be enough of them to claim it is the rule in the usual sense, it still begs the question as to what extent Islam itself creates a climate where this is just fine for so many.

A deaf 10-year-old girl was trafficked into the UK, repeatedly raped, kept in a cellar and treated as a virtual slave for almost a decade, a court heard today.
The orphaned youngster from Pakistan, who is profoundly deaf and has no speech, was locked in a cellar each night where she would sleep on a concrete floor and by day was forced to work for no money and was sexually assaulted, Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester was told.
Her alleged abusers were Ilyas Ashar, 83, and his wife, Tallat Ashar, 66, who deny charges of false imprisonment, human trafficking, sexual offences, violence and benefit fraud.

If their alleged victim displeased them she would be forced into their cellar where the girl would ‘sit there for hours crying and locked in’, the court heard.
They kept the girl, now aged between 19 and 21, at their home in Cromwell Road, Eccles in Salford, Greater Manchester, after bringing her into Britain from Pakistan in June 2000, Peter Cadwallader, prosecuting, told the jury.

Disgraced policeman Mohammed Younis: He has been jailed for 18 years
A policeman was starting an 18-year jail sentence today for sex abuse which a judge described as one of the ‘most despicable’ cases he had ever heard.
The 43-year-old officer was sacked from Thames Valley Police after being disciplined for repeatedly threatening witnesses who had lodged complaints against him.
He had also phoned a 14-year-old girl witness in a case he was dealing with and asking her to go on a date him.
Judge Francis Sheriden jailed paedophile policeman Mohammed Younas after hearing how he raped a girl who was just seven years old and continued to abuse her for eight years.
He had also turned up to work drunk after consuming a bottle of vodka and was found wandering the streets randomly stopping traffic whilst on duty.
Despite his dismissal from the force, the judge heard that the sexual abuse of the girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, increased,
Younas attacked the young girl, the court was told, because his wife refused to have sex with him. He also forced another child to touch his genitals.
‘This was the most despicable offence. It’s hard to imagine a worse case,’ Judge Sheridan told the disgraced constable as he stood in the dock at Aylesbury Crown Court.

The problem of under-18s in England being groomed for sexual activity takes place “in far greater numbers than was ever imagined”, the government warns.
Ministers say gifts such as money, food, drugs or alcohol are often used as a means of coercion.
They say robust strategies are needed to ensure children are not sexually exploited by gangs or individuals.
Children’s Minister Tim Loughton is launching a plan to make sure agencies work together to tackle the problem.
The Tackling Child Sexual Exploitation Action Plan will bring together the police, the Crown Prosecution Service, local safeguarding children boards and support organisations like Rape Crisis.
The plan will also look at improving sex and relationships education in schools and helping parents know what tell-tale signs to watch out for.
In October, the deputy children’s commissioner, Sue Berelowitz, launched a two-year inquiry into the scale and scope of sexual exploitation by gangs.

A ‘DESPICABLE’ paedophile who abused three girls when he was an Imam at a town centre mosque has been convicted by a jury.
Ebrahim Yusuf Kazi, 67, was found guilty of five counts of indecent assault on three girls aged under the age of 13.
The offences took place between 1979 and 1986 at Broad Street Mosque, where Kazi was an Imam before moving to Gloucester.
The victims have been praised by the police for their bravery in coming forward and one victim told the Adver she will come face-to-face with him at court next month to see him sentenced.
Kazi’s crimes were only revealed after one young victim contacted Wiltshire Police.

CLAIREMONT, CA (KGTV/CNN) – A religious organization in San Diego County has come under fire for passing out fliers near high schools that have a distinct anti-Muslim theme.
The two page flier is headlined “Ayatollah Khomeini Had Sex With a 4 Year Old Girl!” and blasts Islam for its beliefs.
Zac Patchett found the flier after his sister, a sophomore at Clairemont High School, took it home.
“I was just personally offended,” Patchett said. “It goes against being an American.”
But Gary Cass, a member of Defend Christians, the group behind the fliers, does not see anything wrong with the handout’s sharp tone.
“This isn’t racist at all,” Cass said. “All it’s doing is telling the truth about a group of people that are organized around a religious ideology. It transcends race.”

A disproportionate number of child sex offenders ‘are Asian men’ a survey appears to suggest.
The report was undertaken after the conviction of the ringleaders of a grooming gang in Derbyshire which preyed on girls aged between 12 and 18.
Half of the 2,379 offenders identified in the research revealed today by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre gave their ethnicity, with 26 per cent of those being Asian and 38 per cent white.
This compares with the general population of the UK which is around 90 per cent white and about four per cent Asian.
Controversy erupted over the ethnicity issue when former justice secretary Jack Straw accused some Pakistani men in Britain of seeing white girls as ‘easy meat’ for sexual abuse.
In January, Mr Straw said child sex grooming was a ‘specific problem’ in the Pakistani community which needed to be ‘more open’ about the reasons behind it.
