The full Islamic face-veil is a part of the “British way of life” and should be celebrated along with religious symbols such as the crucifix, according to a report published today.

Opponents of the veil claim it oppresses women and presents a barrier between those who wear traditional dress and the rest of society.

But in a new report from think-tank Civitas, Alveena Malik, a former faith adviser to the last Labour government, said the test of whether religious symbols are appropriate should be based on whether they are practical.

Politicians in France and Belgium have voted in favour of banning the full veil, or “niqab”, and other European countries are thought to be considering similar action.

In a new report, Women, Islam and Western Liberalism, Mrs Malik said: “We in Britain need to take a different direction from others in Europe and to accept the veil as part of a modern British way of life.”

She continued: “The wearing of religious symbols, including the full veil, should be a fundamental human right of an individual in both the public and private sphere.

“The real test for religious symbols in the public sphere should always be: ‘Does the wearing of a symbol (such as the kirpan, turban, yarmulke, crucifix and the veil) hinder a citizen’s ability to perform their public civic duties?’”

Britain is in a “unique” position to embrace such a public display of faith because of the role the church plays in the affairs of the state and its “multicultural diversity”.

Mrs Malik was appointed by last government to a panel of faith advisers for the Department for Communities. She has overseen British Council guidance on “intercultural dialogue”.

This is a big deal. Western civilization had to spend centuries developing technology as well as social awareness to get to the level where we have strict laws for the humane treatment of farm animals.
If an exception is to be made for religious groups, and I most earnestly believe there should not be, then at least the products should be labelled so that those buying it are aware that the meat they are looking has been slaughtered in a way of enormous cruelty to the animal, and had some, Islamic-conduit-to-the-imaginary chanting Arabic over it at the time.

The right to know what you are buying is basic. Triply so with food. Ask where you shop if the meat is halal, and refuse it if it is. We cannot allow this shyster like Pascal’s wager to be played on us, where producers figure that if all meat is Halal then they do not lose any of their market share. They have to know that the cost of Islamification of the west, as well as abandoning all civilized rules for agriculture and animal husbandry, is the loss of the business of we poor kuffar.

Ontario court to rule if woman can wear niqab while testifying

The Ontario Court of Appeal is expected to rule if women can testify in court while wearing a niqab.

For the first time in Canada, an appellate level court is going to rule on whether a woman can testify in court while wearing a niqab.

The Ontario Court of Appeal is scheduled to release its ruling Wednesday in the case of a 32-year-old Muslim woman who says she was sexually abused as a child by two male relatives.

The decision will be issued just days after the constitutional council in France approved legislation that will ban the wearing of a burqa or a niqab in public places. Women who wear the face-covering clothing could face fines of nearly $200. Anyone in France who forces a woman to wear a burqa or niqab could be sentenced to a year in jail.

In the case before the Ontario Court of Appeal, the woman was originally ordered by a provincial court judge in October 2008 to remove the Muslim veil, which covers most of her face except for her eyes, while testifying at the preliminary hearing of the defendants.

The alleged sexual assault victim refused and the Ontario Court of Appeal heard arguments from the Crown and defence, as well as several other groups, during a two-day hearing in June.

The Ontario government urged the court not to issue a “blanket statement” and instead set out a legal framework for courts to decide the issue on a case-by-case basis. The appeal court could for example, allow limited questioning of a female Muslim witness, to ensure that her religious reasons for wearing the niqab are legitimate.

A lawyer for one of the two defendants argued that there is a long-standing right to assess the demeanor of witnesses when they testify and the woman should have to remove the niqab. The Muslim Canadian Congress sided with the defendants and its lawyer told the court that wearing the niqab is a political statement and the issue is not about religious freedoms.

The Ontario Human Rights Commission and the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) argued in favour of the woman’s right to testify while wearing the niqab. The lawyer representing LEAF suggested the woman should not have to “relive being forcibly uncovered,” if ordered to remove the niqab in court.

I would like to post this 37 minute video here in response to some comments made by ‘Yahya’, who I believe is the key person of the blog that appears to have taken over for, or is at least connected to, a site Vladtepesblog has quoted from time to time, ‘Montreal Muslim News’. A site which published all sorts of highly illiberal fatwas, or Islamic rulings on, pretty much every single aspect of life and how a Muslim should do it, and often, how to impose that ideology on all the rest of us in Canada and by extension the rest of the Western, non-Islamic, world as well.

In a recent comment, Yahya made the statements:

Well, first of all, Muslims are in fact not trying to supplant what you call “our millennium old system of jurisprudence” by advancing a 7th century sharia code. I honestly don’t know where you come up with these fantasies. Many Muslim scholars and intellectuals have said there is no contradiction between western laws which are just and Islamic jurisprudence. The unifying principle is justice, and if a western law adheres to that principle then it is in accordance with Islamic law. Do you have something against justice?

Speaking of Islamic jurisprudence, what does anyone know of it here other than a small sampling of the penal code which is much more complex that how you may understand it. Once would have to study Islamic jurisprudence for years to address this topic in an educated way, yet people here cut and paste statements they get from a google search.

Ignoring the close call with the Clay Pot Logical Fallacy Yahya makes here, Muslims use the word Justice in a dramatically different way. Justice of course means, under the sharia, or that Islam is supreme while others “pay the jizya with willing submission and feel themselves subdued”.

Justice in no way means what Muslims know we think it does when they use the word. Less obtusely, Muslims use the word Justice, much like they use the concept of womens rights. Further, it is no fantasy that England has over 100 legal sharia courts operating now, and have hundreds more illegal ones. It is no fantasy that girls who run away from home because they are afraid of being killed by their families in England for adopting British culture, are being returned to their families by Muslim police from women’s safe houses so often, that women are now afraid to call emergency services for help.

It is no fantasy that in many western nations, illegal sharia ‘police’ patrol Islamic neighbourhoods making sure that women dress according to code and other aspects of sharia are observed to the extent they can get away with it. It is also no fantasy that many nations now find that food is halal and unmarked so that people cannot know that they are eating meat that has been butchered in a way that violates all cruelty to animal laws that our civilization has built over centuries. This means that people are violating their own principles often each day and are not even allowed to know it.

So in that light, I offer you this video.

Mohammed Abdul Aziz’s advice on Islam has cost Britain quite enough

The author of this article is the rather brilliant person that appeared on the ‘no’ side of the ‘Is Islam a religion of peace’ debate I posted to Vlad last night. I am profoundly grateful that the educational system with a liberal dose of good genetics is still capable of producing the likes of Douglas Murray.

Which public servants should be paid more than the Prime Minister? Some might argue for an outstanding police chief or NHS executive. But not even the most devout defender of the status quo would nominate someone whose work is at best pointless and whose advice apparently given to the Government is potentially dangerous. Mohammed Abdul Aziz is a senior adviser within the Department for Communities and Local Government, working on, among other things, the “Prevent” strategy to curb home-grown extremism. He has visited several countries on our behalf, via such initiatives as “Projecting British Islam”.

Mr Aziz has also been involved with the East London Mosque; the London Muslim Centre; the Muslim Council of Britain; the Commission for Racial Equality; the Equal Opportunities Commission; the Forum Against Islamophobia and Racism; the European Network Against Racism; and the UK Race and Europe Network. CIC’s Islamic History Month Canada? Not on my dime.

The affair concerning the barred Imam and DND is fast becoming even more mired in controversy and confusion. Imam Zijad Delic has remarked in a purely defensive move there is no truth to the allegation, adding it compromises Canada’s interests and the well being of our troops in Afghanistan. Mrs. Valiante, president of the CIC, called Mr. MacKay’s decision a crass attempt to pander to the far-right, evangelical base of the Conservative party by smearing the representatives of Muslim and Arab communities.

Meanwhile, Mr. MacKay defended his position in the House, reiterating that his decision was based on the fact that the Canadian Islamic Congress is deemed an extreme outfit whose sentiments are not welcome. Jason Kenney referenced the group in a 2009 speech in which he said it is part of an ongoing review. We are warned time and again by both security experts and moderate Muslim groups of the increasing infiltration of government departments by those actively seeking to impose Islamist standards. Yet despite this, celebrations of Islamic History Month went ahead at DND even without the Imam.

Those critical of MacKay’s decision are calling for an inquiry. I agree there should be one; but chances are not for the same reasons. I have no quarrel with this government’s approach to combating extremism as a matter of fact, I support the initiatives. But, I do want to know why Islamic History Month Canada, the creation of a publicly known extremist group, continues on it’s traveling road show every year.

I want to know why my tax dollars funded it’s launch with an appearance at the Ottawa Police Station last Friday and why Kingston became the first Ontarian city in 2007 to proclaim CIC’s Islamic History Month a yearly event, signed by proclamation by its mayor. I want to know why it would be seen as suitable, that last years IHMC’s theme revolved around ‘Islamic solutions to finance’; an introduction to sharia finance/banking alternatives in Canada. I want to know why on October 25, a portion of my taxes will fund a contest for Muslim school children to participate in a contest for this year’s theme ‘Islam and the Environment’ to be held at Dalton’s Queen’s Park while my family struggles to pay him more in increased taxes for his costly eco-initiatives.

But most of all I want to know this: why do our government officials (of all parties) continue to host the CIC’s advancement of Islamist standards through their creation of Islamic History Month to any degree while simultaneously denouncing extremism? We’re seeking outreach with the wrong folks and are mistaken if we believe such bridge building efforts are not in fact, sharia compliant.

Internal Dissent: Should Canada’s military pay for a full-time Muslim advisory panel?

Every morning, the National Post editorial board start their work day by discussing the assignments that lie ahead — editorial topics, blog posts, op-ed columns, etc. Typically, the process is a swift, unremarkable division of work load and writing duties amongst the editorial board members and columnists with a known interest in timely news items. Today, while discussing the decision by National Defence Minister Peter MacKay to cancel a planned speech by Imam Zijad Delic, sharp divisions emerged between Comment section editor Jonathan Kay and Post columnist Barbara Kay. Their discussion is reproduced below in truncated form.

Barbara Kay: Why is there a paid “Muslim Working Group” permanently embedded in at National Defence, whose job it is to advise the government on their foreign policy wherever it touches on areas of Muslim density? Why not a “Christian Working Group” or a “Sikh Working Group”? Can you imagine if there were a “Jewish Working Group” to advise on the Middle East? Don’t make me laugh. To me this is a scandal, and I don’t understand why it has not been addressed. Some of the people in this group hold very insalubrious views or are attached to groups with discomfiting agendas.

Jonathan Kay: If we were at war with people who claimed to be fighting for Sikhism, or Judaism, or Christianity, it would be perfectly legitimate and beneficial for Defence to have working groups that would help them understand how best to wage the battle against those fighting under the banner of those creeds. I don’t know why the DND’s effort in this area is a matter of controversy among Canadian conservatives — unless it were a forum for radicals, which, given MacKay’s action in this case, it clearly is not.

Barbara: Should we have had a German working group during the Second World War? If the government wishes to know the views of Muslims — not self-appointed spokespeople, which these members are — they can canvas them in any number of ways. Or they can hire an ad hoc consultant for discrete problems. And from what I have seen, non-Muslim experts are more objective on Muslim cultures than many Muslims are. Once you have embedded a group in your department, you are going to find it hard to disagree with what they tell you and still maintain a collegial relationship. Sorry, but this is an unacceptable commingling of church and state, and I consider it indefensible for any religious group to have such an entitlement. Nobody approached Tarek Fatah or Salim Mansur to be part of this group, which tells you a lot right there. Why not include these experts, some of Canada’s most reasonable, patriotic Muslims? Follow up: Canadian Islamic Congress’ “People’s Man” speech cancelled at Department of National Defence

Three days ago, we posted the article, “What the Hell is going on at DND?” reporting on BlazingCatFur’s excellent exposure that the Canadian Islamic Congress’s Imam Zijad Delic would be delivering a scheduled speech at Ottawa’s Department of National Defence in celebration of Islamic History Month. Yesterday we followed up with another article, ” Balzingcatfur Gets Results! MacKay Cancels DND speech by Canadian Islamic Congress”. It appears that the CIC’s front and center Imam will not be permitted to deliver his speech after all, as the Defence Minister has cited the organization as an extremist one with sentiments that should neither be welcomed or shared as part of Islamic Heritage.

Good news travels fast as both the Ottawa Citizen and the National Post have today published the latest in the story. But others are not so thrilled and see little cause for celebration in what blazingcatfur aptly describes as ” a small victory in a long war”.

Typically when Islamist extremism is exposed, apologists on its behalf trip over themselves to “set the record straight”.  One such example comes to us through the Montreal Muslim News’s Ottawa based Yahya’s blog on life, politics, religion, culture, etc. The author of ” Peter MacKay’s Cancellation of Imam Zijad Delic’s Speech is Deplorable and Counter-Productive” seems to waver between predictable Muslim outrage and palsied victimization that such a decision would be made. He writes:

” We now live in an  age of collective punishment. One person holds an objectionable view or makes a controversial statement and anyone associated with that person in anyway is also found to be guilty. We call this guilt by association and most right thinking people consider it to be totally unfair….”

Of course he is referring to the public statement made in October of 2004 by then president of the Canadian Islamic Congress, Dr. Mohamed Elmasry in which he stated that all Israelis over the age of eighteen are legitimate targets for terrorism.

“Delic has totally distanced himself from Elmasry’s statements and has categorically declared that “Muslims totally forbid suicide bombing.”  Delic further stated that Elmasry was speaking on his own and not on behalf of CIC”. “Of course CIC doesn’t agree. There are many leaders who speak and they don’t speak on behalf of everybody. They just speak,” Delic said. “Muslims totally forbid suicide bombing.”

For guilt by association to be argued responsibly and with any measure of success, one would have to deliver the facts; that the organization in question has firmly and unequivocally denounced this infamous remark as extreme and non-representative of their position and does not consider Elmasry a beneficial ally in their bridge building efforts. Six years after the Coren event, I have yet to find any facts that bear this out, delivering without exception or conditions the separation between the CIC, it’s ‘People Man’ Delic and Elmasry.
It’s impossible to say whether the relationship remains up close and personal or whether he is viewed as the family’s creepy, weird, distant uncle to be invited to dinner only when the occasion suits, to be defended because he is part of the clan. But whether close or not, there is a continued alliance.
Shortly after the Coren affair, there was no CIC site denouncement of Elmasry’s statement to be found, instead a vehement defense on his behalf. “THIS IS TOTALLY FALSE! the site screeched in good measured denial of the doctor’s very public comment. They lambasted the media for reporting on it, and in response announced their initiation of a law suit against certain media organizations for defamation. Another article published on the site entitled ‘Defend Mohamed Elmasry” of November 10, 2004, opens with the charge that Dr. Elmasry has been “the target of an intense and unrelenting media campaign calling for his resignation as head of the CIC.. ” They further added:
“What exactly did Elmasry say and, even if he did say it, does it deserve this kind of response?”
followed by a link to a full transcript of the show available from…….. the Montreal Muslim News. Of course it deserved ‘that kind’ of response just as now, both the CIC and Imam Delic deserve the scrutiny they face. As a point man for an organization that has clearly been established as a supporter of Islamist standards in Canada, it should come as no surprise to anyone least of all Imam Delic that he should be held responsible for his organization’s views. If you’re going to sign up to be the guy that gives speeches then you have to be prepared to answer for what your group believes. Considering that Mohamed Elmasry continues to appear on the list of ‘who’s who at the CIC and his articles continue to be published on their site, this could quite possibly set a new record for the shortest distance measured.
Below is the video of Mohamed Elmasry on the Michael Coren show. Apparently we don’t need to be aided by the transcript from the Montreal Muslim News to hear what he said. As for my own view, this indeed is a small victory in a long war, one that is fought as bravely on the home front as it is overseas. Thank you to blazingcatfur for their northern exposure.

MacKay pulls plug on imam’s speech at defence HQ

OTTAWA — A speech at National Defence headquarters by the outspoken executive director of the Canadian Islamic Congress has been cancelled due to his organization’s “extremist views.”

A spokesman for Defence Minister Peter MacKay said Imam Zijad Delic was scheduled to make an address as part of Islamic Heritage Month on Oct. 4 but that MacKay decided to cancel the event.

“The Canadian Islamic Congress has declared that Israelis over the age of 18 are legitimate targets of suicide bombers,” spokesman Jay Paxton said in an email to Global National.

“These types of comments don’t support Islamic Heritage, they simply divide Canadians, promulgate hate and they have no place in Monday’s celebrations.”
