Some video of police reaction to 3 Muslim groups attempting to demonstrate against the Burka ban France, that comes into force today

This is the first of a few videos that will explain it all better as a group. I will post the other 2 videos here as they are finished with English titles. For now, here is the first of three.

Paris police have arrested 58 people trying to take part in a banned demonstration against President Nicolas Sarkozy’s government’s new law banning the burka and other all-covering clothing.

Police swooped on the protesters near the capital’s Place de la Nation and took them in for identity checks.

Explainer – the background to France’s burka debate

Eighteen women were among those arrested, officials say.

Two people have been ordered to leave French territory following identity checks – one to then United Kingdom, the other to Belgium. One of them was arrested on the motorway between Amiens and Paris.

An application for permission to hold the demonstration was turned down on Friday. Police said that the ban was because they feared violent clashes with counter-demonstrators.

Muslim groups plan to attend protest in Paris of the new full face veil ban

First, a group from Belgium who make it clear their intentions are much more than merely protesting new French law.

Then, a similar video from the all too familiar and emetic personality, Anjem Chaudery accepting the invitation on behalf of his group of democracy hating, sharia promising mustards from the UK:

Congrats to Andy, he seems to have bought a better video camera. Rumour has it that this protest has been banned so it should be interesting to see what happens. Below, the poster for the event.

The gist of it is this:

To keep public peace, the prefect of police has banned the gathering of a collective of Muslim groups that wanted to protest Saturday against the law that begins to be enforced on Monday April 11th 2011.

“We have forbidden this protest not because of the object but because of the threats to public order that it generates” explains the chief of the cabinet of the PP. According to information services, ”

some opponents of the protest were expected to cause violence and also the messages and images sent by the organizations calling to protest can be perceived as incitement to discriminate, and to hatred and violence” according to the PP.

Sarkozy’s plan for ‘poisonous’ debate on rising Muslim population in France savaged by religious leaders

From The daily mail:

??Sarkozy’s plan for ‘poisonous’ debate on rising Muslim population in France savaged by religious leaders
By Peter Allen?Last updated at 4:56 PM on 30th March 2011

Under fire: France’s President Nicolas Sarkozy has been attacked by religious leaders for organising a national debate about the country’s growing Muslim population
France was today attacked by religious leaders for organising a ‘poisonous’ national debate about the growing number of Muslims living in the country.
They accused President Nicolas Sarkozy of trying to attract racist voters by holding the all-party political discussion next Tuesday.
It will see people complaining about numerous aspects of Islamic life, from its links with terrorist groups to the wearing of burkas.
But French Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox Christians, Jews, and Buddhists today joined Muslim leaders in published a joint statement saying the debate would cause ‘confusion in the troubled period we are going through.’
With the French airforce currently joining the RAF in pouring bombs and missiles on Muslims in Libya and Afghanistan, the leaders believe that Gallic followers of Islam will be stigmatised even further.
The statement points to the championing of irreligious secularism by the debate’ s organisers, rather than a form of secularism embracing all religions, including Islam.
‘Do we need, in the current climate, a debate on secularism?’ says the statement. ‘Is a political party, even if it is in the majority, the right entity to lead such a debate alone?’
The religious leaders said secularism should be ‘a foundation of our desire to live together’, warning against: ‘lumping things together and so risking stigmatisation.”

Anger: Former presidential candidate Francois Bayrou said the debate would spread poison around the six million odd Muslims who live in France
Former presidential candidate Francois Bayrou, leader of the France’s Democratic Movement, said the debate would spread ‘poison’ around the six million odd Muslims who live in France.
With a general election due next year, Mr Sarkozy’s governing UMP party has been trying to win votes from the far right National Front party.
It has already succeeded in banning the burka, and other forms of Muslim head coverings, and has stressed its opposition to worshippers praying openly on French streets.
But UMP leader Jean-Francois Cope, who pushed for the debate, issued an open letter to Muslims this week saying he wanted a new ‘Code of Secularity’ that would keep schools and other institutions entirely religion-free.
‘The practice of Islam in a secular nation is not the burka not prayers in the street, nor the rejection of diversity,’ said Mr Cope.
The national debate about Islam and secularism will take place a week before France’s burka ban officially comes into force.

A Conservative MP introduced a private member’s bill on Friday that would require Canadians to show their faces before they vote.

Laura Stone, Postmedia News · Friday, Feb. 11, 2011

OTTAWA — A Conservative MP introduced a private member’s bill on Friday that would require Canadians to show their faces before they vote.

Steven Blaney, who represents the Quebec riding of Levis-Bellechasse, said the bill would fix a “gap”in the electoral system and is not meant to discriminate against Muslims.

“For me it is important that we all share this transparency,”said Blaney. “We are all proud to live in this country, we are all proud to share (its) basic principles. I think one of these basic principles is transparency through our election and democratic process, so that’s why I’m presenting this bill and it is applying to everybody and treating everybody in the same way,” he said.

Blaney steered clear of mentioning Islamic head coverings such as burkas or niqabs in his press conference to introduce the bill, instead drawing on examples such as Halloween and ski masks that he said Canadians have donned while attempting to vote.

He also said that while citizens are still allowed to vote by mail, his bill only addresses the process of voting at an election booth. The bill includes an exception for medical reasons.

Elections Canada has an “administrative procedure”in place for validating identities when faces are covered, said spokesman John Enright.

The voter can remove the face-covering in private, or swear an oath of eligibility certifying that they are qualified electors as well as providing two pieces of identification. Anyone who refuses to remove the covering or say the oath will not be permitted to vote, said Enright.

In 2007, both the Conservative federal government and the Quebec government announced they would introduce legislation to ban veiled voting after Elections Canada ruled Muslim women could vote with their faces covered during Quebec byelections. Ottawa passed a law that year which required voters to produce identification, although not necessarily containing a photo if two pieces of ID bearing the voter’s address were presented.

The Quebec government adopted in 2007 the law to compel all voters to uncover their faces. The Conservatives dropped their plans in 2009 amid opposition dissent, although the Liberals and Bloc Quebecois originally supported the decision.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said he disagrees with the Elections Canada procedure outlined by Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand.

According to Elections Canada, there has not been a single instance of an individual attempting to vote with their face covered since 2007.

A Statement From Sergio

Eeyore has previously posted an interview with Sergio Redegalli, the artist who painted a mural saying “NO” to burkhas. part 1,part 2.

Sergio has just released a statement:

STATEMENT FROM SERGIO REDEGALLI

Newtown has always been a safe haven for the unique varieties of people in Sydney. Newtown has always been, and hopefully will remain, a rich source of creative people. Newtown has for a very long time been an interesting mix of Australians coming from many different backgrounds, education and countries.

Newtown in the last 30 years has been on the leading edge for the creative arts, with many successful artists not just working in the area but committing to making Newtown their home.

This page is a step in clearing up some untruths spread about the ‘Say No To Burqas’ mural (‘the mural’) by a very small number of people.

THE ‘SAY NO TO BURQAS’ MURAL WAS PAINTED TO CREATE DIALOGUE AND TO HOPEFULLY ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO BE BETTER INFORMED ABOUT SOME VERY IMPORTANT ISSSUES CURRENTLY FACING AUSTRALIA TODAY.

As Australian Citizens we all have a duty to stand up and express ourselves on issues that are important to discuss and to do this always in a sensible and peaceful manner. We all have the right to express ourselves non-violently both verbally and creatively, via any form of media format without having to be fearful of physical abuse or vandalism to property.

There have been too many untruths made by people and groups who take very much care in not putting their names (as individuals as well as groups as a whole) to their beliefs.

Firstly, the ’Say No To Burqas’ mural has always and only been a starting point for debate and discussion, aside from graffiti and vandalism, it has never had the wording painted saying anything other than ‘SAY NO TO BURQAS’.

Point of fact, Islam is a Religious Ideology with its followers coming from many races all over the world and it is impossible to be racist towards a Religious Ideology.

Islam is more than a Religion; it is in fact a system of rule that guides all devout Muslims throughout their lives from the time of their birth to their death. Apart from its Religious element that most Western people understand the concept of, it also has a very clear and fixed set of legal rules, for almost every event in a Muslim’s life (SHARIA).It also has a political system within its structure clearly describing the aims, desired and results that would be the most beneficial for the expansion of Islam. I personally have discussed these sections with my Australian Muslim friends and I encourage anyone interested in understanding Islam to read more about the challenges facing Australian Muslims and the problems that they are facing because of minority groups who have extremist views that do NOT represent the greater Australian Muslim population.

Extremism does exist; every time any we fly overseas we are exposed to the measures that airport security under take to combat this risk. This year, the majority of Australian Coptic Christians had their Christmas celebrations cut short due to terrorism threats made towards them for their celebrations held on the 7th January 2011, after several Sydney Churches were targeted. (Terror threats sour Coptic Christmas services http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/01/07/3108477.htm?site=sydney). The list goes on.

One very important fact for all Australians to understand is that the burqa and niqab are not a necessary part of Islam. This ruling was made clear to all Muslims around the world by Sheikh Mohamed Tantawi, the dean of al-Azhar university, when he stated that “full-face veiling (is) a custom that has nothing to do with the Islamic faith”. (Egypt’s highest Muslim authority has said he will issue a religious edict against the growing trend for full women’s veils, known as the niqab. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8290606.stm).

An important reason for a law to be passed in Australia regarding all forms of full-face covering worn in public spaces, is that we live in a land where reasonable rules make more sense. We as Australians like being one united country, not a divided one. We have rules that we have all been following in the past, not because they are Law, but because they give all people a feeling of safety. Australians understand that taking off our motorcycle helmets in banks and other sensitive areas is a normal practise, that people walking the streets with their faces fully covered for no apparent reason is out of the norm.

Australians have worked very hard in creating a balanced and non discriminative society. Let’s not let our good will be used against the common good of all Australians. This issue is not about the clothing, it is about the direction of Australia, and the type of community we wish to live in, one that is clear about what is suitable in Australia and what is not. We have rules that clearly state that public nudity is not appropriate and creating rules that state that 100% full-face coverings in public spaces are not appropriate is just as balanced.

Some people may say it is the right of a woman to make a choice of covering themselves 100%, however I ask one very simple question, who is going to protect and allow for the freedom of choice to the next generation of young girls born into these family groups that will control all aspects of their dress code, education and the types of friends they will be allowed to know.

Ottawa: Man wearing hijab robs bank. One more reason to ban the burqa.

From The Ottawa Citizen

Hijab-wearing man robs west-side Ottawa bank

OTTAWA — A man used a Muslim woman’s religious garment as a disguise to rob a bank at the Pinecrest Mall on Thursday, police said.

Sgt. Mark Myers said the man, who wore a blue robe and a head scarf concealing his mouth and nose, passed a note demanding money to a bank teller at a Scotiabank branch around noon.

The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect then fled the bank, heading eastbound on foot, he said.

Myers said that since the summer, there have been a handful of other robberies in Ottawa involving male suspects using Muslim women’s religious garments as disguises. He was not immediately able to answer how many such robberies there have been or whether police suspect they have been committed by the same person.

The sergeant said police are confident the suspect is a man because at one point during the robbery, he spoke in a masculine voice.

The three or four customers in the bank at the time were uninjured. The bank remained closed for the rest of the day.

“We are thankful that our employees and our customers who were in the branch at the time are safe,” said Ann Derabbie, a Bank of Nova Scotia spokeswoman in Toronto. “We will be offering counselling support (to employees) should any of them need it.”

Police described the suspect as male with dark skin, dark eyes and bushy eyebrows, standing about five-foot-10 with a slim build. He was wearing what police described as a dark blue hijab with designs around the head and neck and a long, dark-blue robe. The suspect spoke English with a slight accent.

Saad Haroon: It was just a joke guys, come on!

Who ever said Islam cares for funny? KGS

Saad Haroon has been accused of mocking Islamic values prompting bloggers to call for him to be stoned to death.

The video follows his tongue-in-cheek efforts at serenading a “sexy ninja” or “mystery prize” hidden beneath a black niqab, with only her dark eyes visible through a narrow slit.

“Burka woman, in your black sheet,” he sings, “Burka woman, with your sexy feet, “Burka woman my love for you it grows, every time I see your toes.” He even describes going home to “practise flirting with my living room curtain”.

Mistaken identity … Carnita Matthews outside court with a friend / Pic: Klein Nathan Source: The Daily Telegraph

A BURQA-CLAD mother of seven who claimed she was the victim of mistaken identity has been jailed for six months for making a false complaint against a police officer.

Magistrate Robert Rabbidge dismissed Carnita Matthews’ allegations that a highway patrol officer was racist after he pulled her over for a Random Breath Test and claims he forcibly tried to remove her face veil as false.

In sentencing her, he described her actions as “both deliberate and malicious” saying he had no option but to sentence her to jail given the seriousness of her allegations, and to send a clear message to the community.

A second woman, also wearing a burqa today who was supporting Matthews in court broke down in tears as she was removed by Corrective Service officers. Continue Reading →
