Mumbai attacks suspect Abu Hamza arrested: Krishna

(Reuters) – Delhi police have arrested alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant Abu Hamza, who is suspected of helping to plan the militant rampage through Mumbai in 2008 that killed 166 people, Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna said on Monday.

New Delhi blames Pakistan militant group LeT for the attacks that stunned India and shattered fragile relations with nuclear-armed neighbour Pakistan. Indian-born Abu Hamza is a suspected member of the LeT, local media reported on Monday.

Authorities believe Hamza is the voice of a previously unidentified man who was taped speaking by phone from Pakistan to the militants involved in the Mumbai attacks. He is also said to have coached the attackers in speaking Hindi, according to the reports.

BRIEFING BY IDF FOREIGN PRESS BRANCH, LT.COL AVITAL LEIBOVICH ON THIS MORNING’S TERRORIST ATTACK ON EGYPTIAN BORDER

The TT was just in on a conference call with the IDF Head of the Foreign Press Branch, Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich, and with other bloggers and media, concerning today’s terrorist attack on civilian construction workers building the security fence on the Israeli-Egyptian border.

Hello, good afternoon. Here is the rundown on this morning’s attack. Everything is on the record, I’ll start with a short description. We are talking about number twelve, the Israeli road that’s part of the country. It happened 30 kilometers south of Gaza along side that road.

Two vehicles of construction workers driving along that road shortly after 6am. The area is also called ‘White River Lake’ 30 kilometers south of Gaza. Three terrorists crossed from the Egyptian side of the border into the Israeli side, waiting and hiding on the Israeli side.

They had activated an explosive device as well as an RPG, firing an RPG, as well as a Kalashnikov at those vehicles. The RPG did not hit the cars, however, the Kalashnikov fire and the explosives did hit one of the cars, caused one of the cars to flip over in a near by ditch resulting in the death of one of the construction workers.

A few minutes later one of infantry brigades arrived at the scene and there was an exchange of fire between the soldiers and the squad (of terrorists). There was a big explosion following the exchange of fire. The result of the explosion was two dead terrorists. We understand that one of the terrorists carried upon his body a very large amount of explosives, we have identified two of these terrorists.

We opened just a few minutes ago the road that was called ‘number twelve’ and notified the five communities that are near by who were instructed to stay within their homes for five hours. We ruled out the possibilty of a third terrorist on the Israeli side, that is why we opened up the roads and allowed the movement of the Israelis living there.

There are two things that are actually similar, another event that happened a bit further from there on the Israeli-Egyptian border last year in August. The first thing twas the gear that the terrorists carried upon them was of top quality. They had flack jackets, helmets, they had camouflaged uniforms with Kalashnikovs like I said.

The second thing is that there is a high probability that part of the squad (terrorists) was made on the Egyptian side. Very similar to the events that happened last August. I can also tell you that, ten minutes ago, a separate event, we noticed a separate squad of two terrorists, Beit Chanun area,  a part of Gaza and we targeted them.

Over all 280 rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel from the beginning of 2012, ten of them from this month.

Q & A

Q: There are rumours that the rockets fired from Gaza on Saturday were oredered by the Muslim Brotherhood. Anything to that?

A: Too early to reach any solid conclusions. There are numerous terror organizations in the Sinai and quite a few in Gaza as well. Presently we do not know who’s behind the launching of the two rockets on Saturday.

Q: Any idea as to who the terrorists belong to today?

A: I can tell you that we have informed intelligence to investigate any possible link to organizations inside Gaza. We don’t have a conformation at this point.

Q: Were these construction workers working on the fence between Israel and Egypt?

A: Yes 180 kilometers were complete from this portion. Actually the portion of fence where it happened had already been built there, but there were some areas that were still incomplete. I think that by the end of this year the rest of the 40 kilometers will be complete.

I can tell you for a fact that in those areas in which the fence is already up, the numbers of infiltrators actually went down.

Q: The particular group of workers, were they working on the fence?

A: They were on their way there in their vehicles to begin their days work on the fence.

NEO-NAZIS AIDED PLO BLACK SEPTEMBER TERRORISTS IN MUNICH MASSACRE OF NINE ISRAELI OLYMPIC ATHLETES

Olympic terror attack that killed 11 Israeli athletes, according to a Der Spiegel magazine story on Sunday.

According to the online Spiegel report, police in the city of Dortmund sent a notice to the German domestic intelligence agency, Verfassungsschutz (BfV), in which “Saad Walli, an ‘Arab looking man’ met conspiratorially with the German neo-Nazi Willi Pohl.” The meeting took place roughly seven weeks before the 1972 terror attack in Munich.

Saad Walli was the cover name for Abu Daoud, who is widely believed to be the ringleader of the 1972 terror attack in Germany. Pohl bragged to his employer about his contact with the extremist PLO wing.

According to the BfV documents, there are no indications that the Dortmund police informed the various German authorities about Daoud. Spiegel wrote that it helps explain why the Palestinians were able to prepare their action in an unfettered way in the Federal Republic.

Pohl, the neo-Nazi, is now a crime fiction author and said, “I chauffeured Abu Daoud throughout the entire Federal Republic where he met in different cities with Palestinians.” Pohl helped Daoud obtain false passports and other documents, according to the report.

Spiegel added that Pohl has now “credibly distanced himself” and claims that he was involved without his knowledge in preparations for the 1972 Olympic terror attack. The BfV document contains 2,000 pages of material about the attacks.

It is unclear why the German domestic intelligence agency, state and federal police authorities failed to act on the information from the local Dortmund police. Critics have long accused the German authorities of a lax enforcement policy toward radical Islamic groups. The Iranian-backed Hezbollah, which has engaged in terror attacks in the Middle East and in South America, is a legal political organization in Germany, with an estimated 900 active members.

The Munich massacre of 1972 has long been considered the sole work of Palestinian terrorist group Black September, but new evidence has emerged suggesting the involvement of German neo-Nazis, Der Spiegel magazine reported on Sunday.

Historical documents released to the magazine by the German secret service show that Dortmund police had been aware of collaboration between Palestinian terrorist Abu Daud and neo-Nazi Willi Pohl seven weeks before the attack – yet did not intervene, wrote the paper.

According to the report, Dortmund police sent a letter to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Germany’s intelligence agency, in July 1972, raising suspicions about a meeting that had taken place between the Palestinian and the neo-Nazi, who had bragged to his employer about having contact to the radical wing of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO).

Despite the strong evidence of terrorist activity against him – including being in possession of a letter written by the Black September group – Pohl was given a light sentence of just two years and two months in 1974. Four days after being sentenced, he made his escape to Beirut, Lebanon.

Greek TV channel targeted with hand grenade on election day, no injuries reported

ATHENS, June 17 (Xinhua) — A hand grenade was found outside Greek private television channel SKAI in Athens on Sunday.

The grenade did not explode and caused no injuries, local media reported.

A guard found the hand grenade in the backyard of the TV channel’s building on Sunday noon and alerted authorities, prompting the its briefly evacuation.

The Greek government and all mainstream political parties strongly condemned the attack that has been regarded as an assault against press freedom and democracy.

“With this action, some circles attempt to disturb the smooth electoral process. Democracy, however, cannot be terrorized. Such actions have no place in democratic Greece today,” caretaker government spokesman Dimitris Tsiodras said in a written statement released to media.

A counter terrorism squad is investigating who was behind the incident, as police cordoned off streets at the southern Athens district of Faliron.

According to SKAI and police sources, an anonymous caller had warned over an imminent attack earlier on Sunday, but a check by security personnel ended fruitless. Anohter phone call warned of a second hand grenade.

SKAI had been targeted with petrol bombs on June 5.

 

7/7 Bomber Grave Vandalised

The BBC reports that the grave of one of the 7/7 bombers, Hasib Hussain, has been vandalised. Apparently, his was one of a number of graves in the ‘Muslim section’ of Cottingley Cemetery that was vandalised and according to the BBC ‘had racist graffiti scrawled on it.’ Whether it did or not cannot be objectively ascertained, for the BBC deems criticism of an ideology – Islam – to be ‘racist’.

Hasib Hussain does not deserve to be remembered with fondness or with any degree of respect; his name should rather be execrated. He, along with his fellow bombers, took the conscious decision to kill and maim innocent people for no reason at all, and as such, the vandalism of his grave specifically does not cause any disquiet to me. It would be better had he possessed no grave at all, and whatever had remained of his body had been burned and the ash dumped far out at sea. Putting this aside, it is of course unacceptable that the graves of other Muslims in Cottingley Cemetery were vandalised, and the fact of their vandalism will understandably be painful to their family and loved ones. Such an action cannot be condoned. However, only two graves – one of which was Hussain’s – were damaged. West Yorkshire Police state that:

These are police reports from the end of the last year which show that the leaders are moroccans living in Tarragona and Gerona with connections to terrorist units in the North of Morocco and several places in Europa. The majority have a permanent residence in the country and are granted the right to work till 2014. In Catalonia, Navarra and Vizcaya, the national security forces have detected the presence inside the muslim community of an important active group of followers linked to, and financed by, Salafia Jihadia. Red Cross: 7 Killed In North Nigeria Blast

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — A suicide bomber blew up his car outside police headquarters Friday in the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri, killing himself and six other people and wounding 20, the Nigerian Red Cross said amid warnings that the situation in the city is worsening.

The blast occurred Friday around noon in front of the headquarters’ gate after officers prevented the bomber from entering the compound, said Borno State police chief Bala Hassan. Hassan said that only one policeman and two civilians were killed and six civilians were injured. However, officials have downplayed casualty figures in the past.

Hours earlier, a suspected bomber died when an explosive went off prematurely in another part of the city, said military spokesman Col. Victor Ebhaleme.

A radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram has carried out similar attacks in Maiduguri where residents live in constant fear of the next blast or drive-by shooting.

Four terrorists sentenced to 12 years in prison for plotting strike against newspaper office

A jury in Glostrup ruled today that the four men charged with terrorism for planning an assault on the Copenhagen offices of Jyllands-Posten newspaper are guilty.

Found guilty were Swedish citizens Munir Awad, Omar Abdalla Aboelazm and Sahbi Ben Mohamed Zalouti, and Mounir Ben Mohamed Dhahri, a Tunisian national. All four were arrested in December 2010 after joint surveillance by Danish and Swedish security services uncovered the plot in which the men vowed to “kill as many people as possible” during a planned attack on the 2010 Årets Fund, a high-profile sports awards ceremony that is held in the Jyllands-Posten building. Jyllands-Posten has been the target of Islamic-inspired terror ever since it published cartoons of the prophet Mohammed in 2005, drawing the ire of Muslims around the world.

Awad, Aboelazm and Dhahri were arrested at a flat in the Copenhagen suburb of Herlev on 29 December 2010.They had travelled to Denmark by car the night before. Zalouti was arrested at his apartment in Stockholm and later extradited to Denmark.

Al-Shabab plotting attack in Netherlands

A former commander of the Somali al-Qaeda-linked organisation al-Shabab has said that dormant cells in the Netherlands are secretly preparing terrorist attacks.

The commander, who left al-Shabab because of a dispute with its leaders, said the militant Islamist group is actively recruiting and training members of the Somali diaspora in the Netherlands, United Kingdom and United States to launch attacks in the countries where they have a residence permit.

Dutch public broadcaster VPRO spoke to a BBC reporter, Mary Harper, on its radio programme Bureau Buitenland. Ms Harper had interviewed Mohamed Farah al Ansari who said Somalia was becoming the new hub of jihadism. Al Ansari joined up with government forces and entered a protection programme with the interim government after he stopped activities with Al Shabab.

The Somali commander was questioned by US security officials at the American embassy in Nairobi.

Waging jihad
Al-Shabab is an offshoot of the Islamic Courts Union, which splintered into several smaller factions after its defeat in 2006 by the Somali Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and the TFG’s Ethiopian military allies. The group describes itself as waging jihad against “enemies of Islam”, and is engaged in combat against the TFG and the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM).

The outfit controls large swathes of the southern parts of the country where it is said to have imposed its own strict form of Sharia Law. Its strength is estimated at around 14,000 militants. The group also targets foreign aid organisations, leading to a suspension of humanitarian operations and an exodus of relief agents.

The UN Security Council voted earlier this year to increase AU peacekeeping forces in Somalia. The fighting has shifted away from the capital Mogadishu and government troops have managed to take a strategic al-Shabab stronghold in south-western Somalia.
