Important update on story about Turkey shipping arms to the Islamic State

Readers of Vlad may remember that some months ago on May 29, 2015, a very important story broke in Turkish news, and we at VladTepeBlog were the first English speaking publication I am aware of, that translated and republished the story. Thanks to Shabnam, an expat Iranian human rights activist and others she knew in Turkey, we were able to get that story out I think the same day including the video at that site and more.

This update is to let readers know that as of 1 hour ago, approximately 14:30 EST, the author of the story in Hurriyenet Daily news was arrested by the Turkish government for that exact story.

Here is the video from that story. The Turkish original story has been removed but for those who want it, I backed up the entire page and might restore it.

Again, here is the link to our translation

NATO member Turkey shoots down Russian jet

Dear USA:

I get that you are afraid of large scale black rioting if you impeach Obama and remove him from office. But I would ask you to weigh the costs of that against his engineering a military loss to the Islamic State or to Russia or a nuclear exchange. Unthinkable? Ask yourselves if I had said 9 years ago that we would find ourselves where we are today if that was also unthinkable. We know that the ROE in every conflict under Obama against religious muslims either by design or by accident has guaranteed a loss. In Iraq, Afghanistan and now against the IS. The only battles the US won created space for the IS to assimilate such as Libya and in a way, Egypt.

Turkey shooting down a Russian fighter strikes me as a move designed to put major powers in between the Russians and the Islamic State. So the cost of impeachment of Barack Obama may be immeasurably lower than the cost of keeping him in for another year.

From the Independent:

Turkey has shot down a Russian military jet which it says violated its airspace near the Syrian border.

The Russian Defence Ministry and Turkish Presidency, quoted in Russian and Turkish media reports, have both described the plane as Russian, and video posted by the Haberturk TV station appeared to show the jet coming down in flames.

A military official, quoted by Turkey’s Dogan news agency, said the plane was shot down by Turkish F16s, and that the pilot was given prior warning.

Various reports described the plane as coming down in hostile Syrian territory, and the fate of the two pilots on board was unknown.

(Video of take down and more photos at link above)

The photo below is alleged to be of the Russian pilot shot to death by captors as he attempted to maneuver his landing into safe territory

There is currently disagreement on where the Russian aircraft was when it was shot down. But one thing is for sure. Whatever muslim filmed it, was delighted by it.

5. The three brothers behind Paris terror attacks: Police issue wanted poster for Belgian-born suspect as they reveal one of his siblings blew himself up in a suicide attack and another is in custody

(Clearly what is needed is some kind of, perhaps Chinese style, brother-control)

Police have today issued an international arrest warrant for one of three French brothers believed to be at the heart of the eight-strong ISIS cell who murdered 129 people in Paris.

Police are hunting for Brussels-born Frenchman Salah Abdeslam, 26, who is accused of renting a Volkswagen Polo used by the suicide bombers who killed 89 people at the Bataclan music venue on Friday.

His brother Ibrahim, 31, blew himself up in a solo attack outside cafe Comptoir Voltaire after renting a black Seat found abandoned today filled with AK-47s and ammunition. A third brother, named Mohammad has been arrested in the Belgian capital.

It is believed the team of eight may all have gathered in a Belgian suburb called the ‘Jihad capital of Europe’ to collect their AK-47s and suicide vests. French and Belgian police are investigating links between the international cell and the Molenbeek area of Brussels known as a ‘den of terrorists’.

It came as Iraqi intelligence said they warned Western countries of an imminent assault the day before the Paris attacks and Turkish officials claim they foiled a plot to kill in Istanbul on the same day in revenge for Jihadi John’s assassination in a drone strike last week.

1The United States has carried out a fresh delivery of ammunition to fighters from the Syrian Arab Coalition battling Islamic State in northern Syria, pushing ahead with a strategy that initially unnerved ally Turkey, a U.S. official told Reuters on Sunday.

The delivery of ammunition represented only the second time the United States has moved to arm the Syrian Arab Coalition, a collection of about 10-12 groups numbering about 5,000 fighters. They are working with Kurds and others to claw back land from Islamic State.

8. Police questioned, released fugitive suspect hours after Paris attacks: sources

Four French officials have told The Associated Press that police questioned and released the fugitive suspect hours after the Paris attacks.

The questioning came when police pulled over a car near the Belgian border, hours after authorities had already identified Saleh Abdeslam as the renter of a Volkswagen Polo that was abandoned at the scene of the attack.

Abdeslam is now the focus of an international manhunt. One of his brothers detonated a suicide vest in central Paris and another was ultimately detained in Belgium.

He was one of three people in a car stopped by police Saturday morning, hours after the attacks that left at least 129 dead, the officials said

10. Peterborough mosque set ablaze in suspected hate crime

Peterborough police are investigating a case of arson at the city’s only mosque, an act that the president of the local Muslim association says was a “clearly a hate crime.”

The fire broke out at the Kawartha Muslim Religious Association’s mosque around 11 p.m. Saturday, police said. No one was inside the Masjid Al-Salaam Mosque at the time.

But association president Kenzu Abdella said members of the congregation had been inside 784 Parkhill Rd. just an hour before the fire broke out there, celebrating the birth of a new baby.

‘Uneasiness’

“The scare for people is that what if this had happened while we were in there?” he said Sunday. “So there’s a bit of uneasiness in the community.”

Abdella said the Muslim congregation was devastated by the arson as members have placed roots in the community and integrated into the surrounding neighbourhoods.

The mosque holds regular open houses that are attended by churchgoers and politicians. They also make regular donations to the local food bank, according to Abdella.

(If it turns out to be, as is so often the case, an insurance job a way out of massive debt for the place, will the CBC inform us? Or just leave us with an impression that it was a ‘hate crime’ because after all, its better to keep the population cowed since after all, I mean, it could have been one. Right?)

Thank you M., Yucki, Wrath of Khan, Gates of Vienna, and many people who sent in links for this and on many occasions. More to come. Yup. Still more.

Turks and kurds mix it up in Stockholm Sweden

It seems that yesterday was a Europe wide conflagration between Turks and Kurds. We have videos from Germany and Switzerland and now Sergels Torv (square) Sweden.

A demonstration at Sergel Square in Stockholm held on Sunday afternoon became a little unsettled.
A group of Turks and a group of Kurds started harrassing each other and the police had to intervene.
There have been thrown some bangers, (firecrackers?) says Sven-Erik Olsson from the Stockholm police.
During the day today, there was a demonstration in Sergel Square. The afternoon ended but then it became a little unsettled.
We were trying to separate the two factions, says Sven-Erik Olsson of the Stockholm police.
Aftonbladet reporter on the scene, Victor Stenquist, confirmed that the police had to use batons to avoid a clash between the groups.
Police cordoned off Klarabergsgatan and reportedly closed several entrances to Åhlens (department store).
But now it is peaceful, said Sven-Erik Olsson later.
13 people were detained and taken into custody according to the Police Act.
Two people were arrested for assaulting a person who was taken to hospital.

Over a Dozen Injured in Riot near Bern, Switzerland

An original translation by Nash Montana

From this Swiss site

Riots broke out between participants of an authorized and an unauthorized demonstration. Turkish and Kurdish nationalists rioted. Four policemen were injured. A car slammed into a crowd of people.

In the early afternoon of September 12th, the inner city of Bern, Switzerland lit up when a group of Turkish and Kurdish nationalists incited a riot. A group of participants in a non-authorized demonstration occupied Helvetiaplatz, and attacked the police. They also attacked participants of another, authorized demonstration.

The police confirmed over a dozen people were injured, among them four police officers and one K9. This although even before the unauthorized demonstration took place, they were offered a different location by the police. But the group opposed the offer, so the police felt forced to clear Helvetiaplatz.

Both groups were heavily armed with bats, iron bars and other weapons, and it was extremely hard to separate them. The police had to use tear gas and rubber bullets. After the riot, Kurds accused the police of being extremely heavy-handed towards them. Continue Reading →

ATTACKS: Sweden and US Embassy in Turkey

1. Mass stabbing attack at IKEA in Sweden, almost certainly by a jihadi.

(As I see it, an attack at IKEA can only be from 2 sources and as he didn’t go after the staff, it almost certainly isn’t someone who tried to assemble their furniture)

2. U.S. consulate in Turkey targeted as wave of attacks kills nine

By Yesim Dikmen and Seyhmus Cakan

ISTANBUL/DIYABAKIR (Reuters) – Two women shot at the U.S. consulate in Istanbul on Monday and at least eight people were killed in a wave of separate attacks on Turkish security forces, weeks after Ankara launched a crackdown on Islamic State, Kurdish and far-left militants.

The NATO member has been in a heightened state of alert since starting its “synchronized war on terror” last month, including air strikes against Islamic State fighters in Syria and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants in northern Iraq. It has also rounded up hundreds of suspected militants at home.

A far-left group that killed a Turkish security guard in a 2013 suicide bombing of the U.S. embassy in Ankara claimed it was involved in Monday’s attack.

The Revolutionary People’s Liberation Army-Front (DHKP-C), considered a terrorist organization by the United States and Turkey, said one of its members was involved in the attack, and called Washington the “arch enemy” of the people of the Middle East and the world.

3. Texans threaten to ‘cover land with pig blood’ to block Muslim cemetery 25 miles from site of Muhammad cartoon shooting

(I don’t see the problem with muslim cemeteries. In fact the good and fair people of Texas might even consider offering to turn every mosque into a cemetery as a neighborly thing to do)

Muslims say they’re looking for a place to bury their dead but locals in Farmersville say it’s a plot to gain a foothold in their small Texas town and are threatening to stop the plan by using pig parts.

A proposal to bring a Muslim cemetery to the rural town has stoked fears among residents who are vehemently trying to convince community leaders to block the project.

The sentiment reflects an anti-Muslim distrust that has been brewing over the last year in parts of Texas, most notably 25 miles away in Garland – the scene of a deadly May shooting outside a cartoon contest lampooning the Prophet Muhammad.

(But yes, its probably a toehold and a nucleus for mosques, madrases etc.)
(I believe that PM. Cameron also has the Tower of London for sale on Ebay as well as several castles)

In contrast, the British media reported Sunday on an upcoming “major speech” by Cameron in which he’ll announce a five-year plan to tackle extremism, pointing to British values as their “strongest weapon” in the fight, according to The Telegraph.

The British newspaper reported:

Muslims who travel to the Middle East for the “glamour” of jihad will become nothing more than “cannon fodder” for terrorists, David Cameron will warn this week.

The “sick and brutal reality” is that young men will be used as suicide bombers, while women who join the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant will face horrific abuse, the Prime Minister will say.

6. ‘ISIS made me practise beheading infidels using a doll’: ‘Lion cub’ boy, 14, who fled terror camp reveals how next generation of executioners are brainwashed and taught to kill without mercy

The group is recruiting teens and children using gifts, threats and brainwashing. Boys have been turned into killers and suicide bombers.

An ISIS video issued last week showed a boy beheading a Syrian soldier under an adult militant’s supervision.

Last month, a video showed 25 children unflinchingly shooting 25 captured Syrian soldiers in the head.

In schools and mosques, militants infuse children with extremist doctrine, often turning them against their own parents.

7. At least 28 dead in suspected Isis suicide attack on Turkish border town

A bomb has exploded in the Turkish town of Suruc near the Syrian border killing at least 28 people and wounding nearly 100 more.

The suicide bombing, which Turkish officials say is believed to have been carried out by Isis, occurred at midday on Monday outside a cultural centre.

The town is situated just 10km across the border from Kobani in Syria, where Kurdish fighters have been locked in a fierce battle with Isis for control.

One senior official in Ankara, Turkey’s capital, told Reuters they believed the attack was a “retaliation for the Turkish government’s efforts to fight terrorism”.

One witness, who said his name was Mehmet, said: “I saw more than 20 bodies. I think the number of wounded is more than 50. They are still being put into ambulances. It was a huge explosion, we all shook.”

PLEASE CHECK COMMENTS under this post and the daily links post for today for more breaking videos and information on this attack. One might suspect that the degree of severity of this global conflict the muslims have been igniting for decades now may have ratcheted up a notch with an attack like this on Turkey.

7. South African families among ISIL’s newest recruits

Johannesburg, South Africa – At least 23 South African citizens have travelled to Iraq and Syria to join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group (ISIL), raising concerns of recruitment activity among the country’s sizable Muslim community, an Al Jazeera investigation has revealed.

Various sources have confirmed with Al Jazeera that at least 23 people, including families with children, have left South Africa to join ISIL over the past year. At least eight families are believed to be among the recruits.

Some of the affected families have reacted with shock and confusion to the defection of their relatives.

An official in the Turkish foreign ministry, who asked to remain anonymous because they are not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed that around a dozen South Africans were detained and subsequently deported to South Africa for attempting to reach ISIL territory last month.

From Cumhuriyet Turkkish media

Cumhuriyet has reached the visuals from the D.A’s files of the truck that was stopped by the police on an informant’s notice at January 19 2014, allegedly carrying arms to Syria.

It turned out that the existence of the arms and ammuniton that were consistently denied by the government were recorded by 3 cameras in the trucks that are said to be MIT’s (Intelligence Agency)

It was observed that in the steel holds opened by the DA who was escorted by Gendarme officials, there were mortar and cannon shells and heavy machine gun bullets covered on top by boxes filled with antibiotics.

How was it stopped?

As remembered, on 11th May 2013 in Reyhanl?, 52 people died after two trucks filled with explosives were detonated, and this was recorded as the “Bloodiest terrorist action” in the history of the Republic.

At the 1st of January on a similar informant’s notice a truck was stopped by police forces in K?r?khan county of Hatay, but a search was prevented when the Mayor had interfered. While the truck’s load was recorded as “Humanitarian Aid”, CHP asserted that there were weapons in the truck, and it was carrying arms and ammunition to Syria under control of the government and MIT.

Hayati Yaz?c?, The Minister of Customs, stated “We are x-raying everything that goes to Syria, this situation has nothing to do with us.”, while Efkan Ala who took his oath in the Parliament and took office that day asserted that there was aid that was going to Turkmens in the truck and threatened the journalists:

“Everybody is going to know their business. Do you know what’s inside the trucks?”

18 days after this incident, this time 3 trucks were stopped by the Gendarme at gates of Adana Ceyhan Sirkeci again with an informant’s notice. There were tensions between the MIT officials escorting the truck, the riot police that arrived later and the 250 Gendarme officials under command of Adana City Gendarme Commander, even weapons were drawn.

Adana D.A. Aziz Takç?, who gave permission for the trucks to be searched later stated at the court that when he reached the scene, some rugged-looking individuals with dirty beards who claimed to be MIT officials were shouting and insulting.

The trucks that turned out to be travelling without the knowledge of city State officials, MIT regional director and Armed Forces, were to be held under detention at Seyhan County Gendarme Command, while the MIT staff tried to stop this by cutting them off on the road, taking the keys from the driver and throwing them away.

D.A Takç? stated about that day:

“I went and checked the equipment. I also saw the arms and ammo filled. (truck) I told the Gendarme who came to the scene to report and record it, and take numbers. At this time, Hüseyin Avni Co?, the Mayor of Adana, and the Police Chief came there with about 3-4 hundred special action police (Something equilavent to SWAT) and riot police. We had a meeting with the mayor of Adana to solve the situation. He told me that these trucks belonged to MIT, he would do everything to death to make sure they’re let go, that the Prime Minister (Erdogan) called and said something around ‘We will make a legislation about this, tell the D.A. to let them go’, and that the Minister of Internal Affairs had also called him.

After these warnings, no legal action was made about the equipment on the trucks.

After the incident, first the government stated that the equipment in the trucks were “national secret”, then P.M. Erdo?an claimed that the equipment was headed to the Turkmens, but the Turkmens later denied this and said that nothing arrived to them.

Muslims in Constantinople stage massive protest to turn the Hagia Sophia into a mosque

Article and photos here

Hundreds of people demanded that the historic Istanbul Hagia Sophia museum be converted into a mosque during a rally in Istanbul on May 24.
People gathered outside Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia, in the historical Sultanahmet district, with some carrying signs that read: “Hagia Sophia needs to be reopened as a mosque,” and “Let our lives be sacrificed for Islam.”

The protest was led by many Turkish nongovernmental organizations, including the Humanitarian Relief Foundation (?HH).

ISTANBUL (AP) — In a second evening of violence in Istanbul, police killed a woman Wednesday carrying a bomb near the city’s main police headquarters, an official said.

Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin also said that a second person escaped and that a policeman was slightly injured. It wasn’t immediately clear who was behind the attack.

The incident follows a deadly hostage situation on Tuesday, when a prosecutor and two gunmen holding him at an Istanbul courthouse were killed in a shootout between police and the assailants.

Segments of an interview from a shunned Syrian Christian Prof. in France on ‘rebel TV’

Oz-Rita found this interesting interview, which she translated what she felt was the most interesting segments.

Below are her editorial notes on this clip:

Bassam Tahhan is a professor of Arabic literature, French sociologist and geopolitics of Syrian origin (Christian).

He taught courses in the most prestigious academic institutions in France and the world and is still teaching at the Henry IV, one of the most prestigious Lycées in Paris.

In this interview given to TV Liberté  which will shock he gives his view of the situation in Syria.

Professor Bassam Tahhan used to be  a high profile/high output commentator on French Media until he started criticising the Foreign Policy, specifically with regard to Syria. He is now basically shunned by all main TV stations and TVL is rather courageous broadcasting his views. In another part of this interview (not translated) he says that the TV station FRANCE 24 has even spelled it out for him:  we will not receive you again.
