Double Standard in Application of Egyptian Contempt of Religion Law

Assyrian International News Agency

(AINA) — Anger and frustration have risen among Egypt’s Coptic Christians after the recent escalation of court cases against Copts charged with of contempt of Islam. Copts accuse the authorities, including the ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF), of exercising double standards in the application of the “contempt of religion” law. In the last month three cases have been brought against Copts, based on accusations mostly from postings on Facebook or Twitter of cartoons or comments deemed by Islamists as insulting to Islam.

“Copts have received a barrage of insults to their faith and their symbols and have had churches torched and destroyed, and no one has done anything about it,” said Dr Naguib Gobrail, head of the Egyptian Union of Human Rights Organizations. “The law of contempt of religion is applied solely to punish the Copts.”

The case against billionaire Naguib Sawiris, a Copt, for contempt of religion after tweeting cartoons, was heard on January 14 before a misdemeanor court in Cairo. The case was brought forth by Islamist lawyer Mamdouh Ismail and fourteen other lawyers, who filed a complaint accusing Sawiris of defamation of Islam and deliberately “mocking Islamic symbols and attire.”

Sawiris, who is also a top political figure and founder of the liberal Free Egyptians Party, had posted on his twitter account in June 2011 an illustration of Mickey Mouse with a beard and Minnie Mouse wearing a niqab (full face veil); it was accompanied by the comment “Mickey and Minnie after.” After the Islamist uproar, he apologized and if it was misunderstood and expressed his full respect for Islam and Muslims. He removed the cartoons, which he had originally copied from Saudi Arabian Internet websites. Islamist organized a boycott his mobile telecommunications network Mobinil, which lost over one million customers.

During the trial one of the Islamist lawyers, Dargham, said that this was the first case in which Islam is insulted in an “Islamic State,” described Sawiris as a “criminal” and called for his arrest and prevention from leaving Egypt, which caused a brawl between lawyers from both sides, forcing the judge to adjourn the case to February 11. If convicted, Sawiris could face imprisonment.

Three week ago Coptic student Gamal Masood (17), from the village of Bahig and Adr in Assuit province, was assaulted by his fellow students after the school social worker had printed and hung on a wall a web page from Facebook with the photo of Gamal and a drawing which Muslims regarded as that of their prophet. Although he denied the charge, violence and protests broke out in three villages. Muslims from the surrounding villages protested for two days. They torched his home, together with four other homes of friends and relatives. To calm them down, the head of security promised them that Gamal and his family would be evicted. While Gamal’s investigations were still going on, a meeting was held on December 31 at the Assiut governor’s office, attended by representatives from Al-Azhar, Salafists from the area who won the last parliamentary elections, church representatives and the authorities, where it was decided that Gamal, also accused of causing sedition, would be handed over to prosecution, and he and his entire family would be expelled from the county. Moreover, it was decided that the priests in the area had to publish an official apology in all the media. The young student is still detained, and his trial is scheduled for February 7.

UK judge feels that women should have no actual responsibility for their actions.

If one were to extrapolate this reasoning then all of us could become vigilantes of the harshest kind. Of course, we know full well what would happen if our annoyances at day-to-day realities were to motivate us to take action against random strangers being nice to us in a fully-appropriate location. That is, if we were male, doubly so if white and again, if a Western-nation indigenous person such as a secular or Judeo-Christian person.

“How do you write women so well?”

“Easy. I think of a man and remove all accountability and reason”

I guess this judge was a fan of Jack Nicholson in As Good as it Gets.

Judge refuses to jail woman plumber who glassed nightclubber who smiled at her ‘because she had been sexually harassed during training’

  • Attacker walks free after judge says harassment was to blame for her behaviour
  • Judge describes her harassment as ‘intolerable’ and says she is ‘impeccable character’
  • Victim was described as being in the ‘wrong place at the wrong time’

Spared jail: Sheona Keith, 22, hurled her glass at a man she thought was 'eyeing her up'Spared jail: Sheona Keith, 22, hurled her glass at a man she thought was ‘eyeing her up’

A woman who glassed a male clubber that smiled at her – and then blamed the attack on the fact she was sexually harassed at work – was spared jail by a judge.

Sheona Keith threw her glass at a man in a nightclub who she thought was ‘eyeing her up’, in an unprovoked attack which resulted in him needing hospital treatment.

However, a judge refused to give her a custodial sentence after accepting that earlier sexual harassment she suffered at work was the reason behind her behaviour.

Instead, 22-year-old Keith – who admitted a charge of actual bodily harm against James Kirkham – was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay £400 compensation by Judge Philip Wassall when she was sentenced at Exeter Crown Court.

Describing Keith’s case as ‘unique’, Judge Wassall said she had an ‘impeccable character’ and that the sexual harassment she had suffered was ‘intolerable’.

At one point he said that she threw the glass ‘without knowing’ it was in her hand and described the victim as being ‘in the wrong place at the wrong time’.

Passing sentence, Judge Wassall told Keith: ‘You worked hard but your chosen line of work took you into a completely male-dominated environment and one where, I am afraid, you had to put up with sexist comments and harassment which there is no excuse for.

EU threatens to withhold financial support from Hungary over definition of marriage: report

No matter what your feelings on gay marriage are, this is still an excellent example of how and why the European Union is a totalitarian, ideologically driven (and leftist at that) institution which removes basic rights to autonomous culture and decision making in a very Soviet style manner. Except its withholding the carrot more than it is, presenting the stick.

BUDAPEST, January 12, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – European Union officials are making their disapproval of Hungary’s recent constitutional changes felt by threatening to withhold financial support if it does not remove its new amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman, according to one Hungarian source.

The so-called “Easter constitution” adopted in the post-Communist country last May was a major shakeup for Hungarian politics and an outrage to progressive EU ideology: the document not only supported marriage but declared that the unborn child deserves protection from the moment of conception, and even made special mention of Christianity as lying at the heart of the country’s identity. The document’s discussion of human rights also does not mention sexual orientation, another break from EU priorities.

The Hungarian daily Magyar Nemzet claimed this week that the EU would move to drop financial aid to Hungary unless officials there scratched the marriage definition and dropped criminal charges against former Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany, according to unnamed sources in Brussels. A spokesperson for the European commissioner for economic affairs called the allegation “nonsense,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

Canadian Human Rights Tribunal boss faces harassment accusations

Daily Brew:

The Conservative-appointed head of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal is under fire for allegedly harassing her own staff.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper named Alberta lawyer Shirish Chotalia, chairwoman of the tribunal in November 2009. The tribunal hears complaints referred to it by the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

Now the Ottawa Citizen’s Chris Cobb reports an independent labour investigator has upheld harassment complaints against Chotalia from two staff members.

Lawyer Philip Chodos concluded she engaged in “baffling, if not bizarre” behaviour. Chotalia faces two more harassment complaints. Her employees last year accused her of creating a toxic atmosphere in the workplace.

More than half the tribunal’s 25-member staff left via sick leave or retirement in her first year on the job, the Citizen reported.

Chodos was appointed to investigate under an agreement with Chotalia and unions representing her staff.

The process is considered unusual since harassment complaints normally are handled by the heads of the affected government department or agency. Continue Reading →

‘Divide and rule’ Diane Abbott sent son to £6,000 private school in Ghana

A little lefty hypocrisy here. I am reliably informed, that the very same people in Los Angeles who have ruined most of the schools there with abhorrent and anti-freedom policies also send their children to private schools as a rule, leaving the working classes the leftist-elites are supposed to be so fond of, to send their children to the very schools the elites destroyed.

Communism. Ain’t it grand? Good enough for thee, but not for me.

The honor killing link-arama

There are too many horrors to post all separately today. At some point one has to attend to the minor inconveniences of a corporeal existence. So here are a few related links in one post.

Jihad Watch: Even after death the punishment of the ‘honor’ killed continues.

Muslim beats Englishman to death, has to cook pancakes for the homeless for a weekend. Ok slight exaggeration but just slight. Hard to make out what actually happened in this article but one thing is for sure. A very very light sentence for a Muslim who fatally beat a British man who appears to have been ethnically cleansed from his neighborhood by Muslims if I at all am reading that right.

Death to women in Pakistan continues to rise dramatically due to honor killings.

Rules for journalists by the National Union of Journalists

This explains a great deal actually, about why the news doesn’t seem to be much in touch with actual reality on the ground. What a tragic shame. I might add, it would be an interesting contest to see who can find the most contradictions in this clearly socialist agenda driven yet, I am reliably informed, very influential organization.

Brainwashing in Norway. Seven aspects.

Here is a documentary on what appears to be political brainwashing in Norway in seven parts. I will post them here as each one becomes available.

For those of you with the ability to download, it might be a good idea to grab this while you can. It came to us through a series of people so I don’t know the back-story on it but as the whole thing is over 3 hours, I am guessing it was a series meant for TV. I have no idea if it was ever broadcast in Norway or not. And frankly, I have not seen all of it yet myself, just bits. But what I have seen I liked very much. Please watch, enjoy, comment.

Australia’s 60 minutes does stunningly deceptive, unsubstantiated piece on the EDL and Tommy Robinson

This ‘documentary’ shows Tommy, describes him as ‘far right wing’, as a ‘racist thug’ etc. without showing one iota of actual evidence of any of those claims. Then, somewhat to their credit, interview some Australian Muslims that do spout open hate and sedition but do not describe him as ‘far right wing’ or racist etc. even though he supplied all the necessary evidence for it.

What is wrong with the media now? In order to broadcast any footage of defense of classical and liberal civilization and democracy you have to demonize it? Tommy should sue.

Go to 9 minutes 15 seconds of this video and listen to the question. There is no way Tommy was asked this and responded the way he is portrayed here. Notice that the camera moves away from the interviewer during the question. This is what is called, ‘a re-ask’ in videography. You ask the question again after the fact and edit it in. But of course one is ethically bound to ask the same question. This needs investigation.

NYC police and Muslim cab drivers face off as Muslims demand special rights, demand ability to break the laws.

The solution to this, as it is for the burka debate and mosque issues everywhere is the same. Stop giving Muslims special rights and the problem solves itself. We created these problems by allowing the definition of freedom of religion to mean ‘you can do anything you want so long as it is part of the exorcize of your non-Christian religious beliefs.

Frankly, based on this interview I did with Sam Solomon in 2010, the basis exists to not allow mosques to exist at all as they are a physical manifestation of a hate crime and an act of war

Victim: Rhea Page, 22, lost her job after being traumatised by the attack by a gang of Somalian girls

Victim: Rhea Page, 22, feels she has become a victim again after her attackers faced court -this time of soft justice

When Rhea Page watched CCTV in court of herself being beaten unconscious by a Muslim girl gang and saw one of her attackers laughing she felt disgusted.

The 22-year-old was determined to face her attackers and see justice done after she was viciously assaulted while waiting for a taxi with her boyfriend in Leicester city centre.

But the healthcare worker was bitterly disappointed as all four girls walked free from court for the random attack, which left Rhea with a bald patch where her hair was ripped out, because they were Somalian Muslims and not used to drinking alcohol.

Far from feeling a sense of relief after her attackers’ sentencing Rhea feels like she has become a victim all over again, this time of a soft justice system which let her attackers walk free. Continue Reading →

Ex-soldier jailed for burning Koran in Carlisle

BBC:

Andrew Ryan Andrew Ryan had stolen a copy of the holy book from the library

A former soldier has been sentenced to 70 days in prison for setting fire to a copy of Muslim holy book the Koran in the centre of Carlisle.

Andrew Ryan had previously admitted religiously aggravated harassment and theft of a Koran from a library.

The 32-year-old, of Summerhill, said he had been “shocked” watching a Muslim burning a poppy on Remembrance Day.

Shoppers and schoolchildren witnessed the burning, outside the old Town Hall, on 19 January.

Sitting at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court, District Judge Gerald Chalk described it as a case of “theatrical bigotry”.

‘My country’He said: “It was pre-planned by you as you stole the book deliberately.

“You went out to cause maximum publicity and to cause distress.”

Ryan struggled with security guards in court after the sentence was passed.

While being handcuffed he shouted: “What about my country? What about burning poppies?”

About 10 people were in court to support Ryan, and as they left the court they shouted “do you call this justice?”.

After sentencing, Insp Paul Marshall, of Cumbria Police, said: “This incident was highly unusual for Cumbria as we have such low levels of hate crime in the county.”
