Canada: Government to impose new labels, but not new standards, on halal food
I suggest we all contact the Canadian Government and demand that the government make sure that all halal foods are easily recognized as such, as the rest of us have at least as much right, and arguably a lot more to know what food is halal, in order to refuse to buy foods that are not in accordance with Canada’s humane slaughter laws, are consecrated to a genocidal god who the vast majority of us do not wish to subsidize and where a special tax is collected which assists in paying for mosques and jihad. This article does say that we have 30 days to make a comment to the government but does not offer a link. However I think this is it.

Faced with a rapidly growing demand for halal food permitted under Islamic law, the Canadian government is moving to change the labels required but is stopping short of adopting a standard.
According to proposed regulations published in this week’s Canada Gazette, all food that advertises itself as halal would have to list on the packaging which body certified it meets the criteria under Islamic law.
However, the government said it can’t move to adopt a standard for halal until Canada’s Muslim community can agree on what that standard should be.
“Canadian Muslims would ideally want the CFIA to establish regulatory controls over halal products through a standard,” the Canadian Food Inspection Agency wrote in its notice of the proposed regulations. “Regulating halal products through a standard is not feasible as there is currently no consensus among stakeholders on a common standard. The CFIA therefore proposes to establish regulatory requirements that would assist in providing consumers with sufficient information to choose their halal products based on what fits their definition of halal.”
The proposed regulations come as demand for halal food has been been rapidly growing in Canada along with the size of the country’s Muslim population, which is increasing at an annual rate of 13 per cent, officials wrote, adding, “Consumer demand for halal food products is expected to increase as well.”
The market for halal foods is currently estimated at $1 billion and is becoming an attractive market for more and more businesses.

Australia is suspending the export of live cattle to Egypt after video emerged showing extreme cruelty to animals in Egyptian abattoirs.
The Australian Livestock Exporters’ Council said the footage, released by animal rights group Animals Australia, was “horrific”.
Animals Australia said it had been filmed inside the two abattoirs approved to process Australian cattle.
Exports to Egypt were halted in 2006 for four years over similar concerns.
And in 2011, livestock exports to Indonesia were suspended after evidence of cruelty emerged there.

Sweden has found halal-marked salami for sale that contains more than 10 percent pork, which observant Muslims do not eat.

Swedish National Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket) said on Wednesday that the pork meat came from Slovenia.
“We are now going to inform the EU about our analyses and follow up with the company that sold this wrongly labelled salami in Sweden,” agency spokeswoman Louise Nyholm said in a statement.
“It is unacceptable that products that are labelled halal contain pork meat. There are a lot of people who absolutely do not want to eat pork meat, so it’s important that companies take responsibility and verify that their products are not sold on false grounds,” she added.

Cairo: At least 540 students at Egypt’s religious Al Azhar University had suffered food poisoning, reported the health Ministry on Tuesday.
The poisoning was blamed on unhealthy meals that students had eaten at their dormitory in Cairo. The cases angered the university’s students, who on Tuesday held a mass protest and blocked the traffic outside the headquarters of the institution in the suburban Cairo area of Nasr City.
State television reported that President Mohammad Mursi had visited some sick students at a Cairo hospital.

Over 500 Egyptian students of Al-Azhar University, a leading centre of Islamic learning, have been admitted to a hospital here with food poisoning, sparking widespread protests.
Hundreds of angry students gathered today to protest deteriorating conditions at the university’s hostels and negligence by management after the health ministry said 540 students from Al-Azhar had been hospitalised.
Student union member Abdullah Abdel-Moteleb told Al-Ahram newspaper that meals served at the hostel yesterday were of noticeably poorer quality than usual.
“By around 6pm, dozens were suffering the effects of food poisoning and were taken to hospital,” he said.

Norway agency to file complaint over pork in halal food

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority said Friday it would file a police complaint against a food company after finding large quantities of pork in its halal-labeled products.
Kebab meat sold by Norwegian group Kuraas to restaurants contained between five and 30 percent pork even though it was marked as halal, the agency found.
“We will file a complaint against the producer,” Catherine Signe Svinland, an adviser at the food safety watchdog, told AFP.
“In a halal product, there should be no pork at all and when we find such quantities … we don’t believe it’s an accident but it is in fact fraud,” she said.
The group denied any wrongdoing, Norwegian media reported.
“We buy huge quantities of halal meat and we can show invoices corresponding to what we bought and sold,” marketing manager Kenneth Kuraas told news agency NTB.
“Pork ending up in these products is simply due to routines not being followed,” he added.
The Food and Safety Authority also said it had found more than 60 percent pork in pizza meat sold by another Norwegian company.
The Islamic halal method of killing an animal requires its throat to be slit and the blood to be drained.
On Thursday halal chicken sausages served to pupils in central London schools and nurseries were revealed to contain traces of pork.

Leading Tunisian Opposition Figure Is Fatally Shot
CAIRO — A leading Tunisian opposition politician who had fiercely criticized the Islamist-led government, accusing it of turning a blind eye to violence by religious hardliners, was fatally shot by unknown gunmen outside his home in Tunis on Wednesday, officials said.
The politician, Chokri Belaid, a leading member of a leftist opposition alliance former in October, was shot just as he was leaving his house in the capital city, the state news agency TAP said. A colleague in Mr. Belaid’s opposition alliance told Reuters that he was killed with four bullets to the head and chest.
Tunisia’s president, Moncef Marzouki, cut short an overseas trip and was scheduled to return to the country. The prime minister, Hamada Jebali, called the killing “a political assassination and the assassination of the Tunisian revolution,” according to Reuters.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the killing, which appeared to represent a dangerous new phase in Tunisia’s troubled transition to democracy. Since becoming the first Arab country to overthrow its leader after the start of the uprisings in 2011, Tunisia has been torn between its legacy as a bastion for Arab secularism, and its new role, as a proving ground for the region’s emerging democracies in which Islamists play a leading role.

While this may seem a small or subtle issue to some, it is in fact symptomatic of the complete destruction of Western legal and value systems. The idea that hard earned anti-animal-cruelty laws should be not just ignored but it’s opposite embraced and incorporated, presumably only for the new Muslim overlords of course, is a rather stunning illustration of what is coming our way at supersonic speeds in all sectors of our lives.

LIVESTOCK exporters are being investigated after allegations Australian sheep are being illegally sold and slaughtered inhumanely at a notorious Kuwait market.
It is the second major Agriculture Department investigation since strict animal welfare rules were implemented after last year’s cattle controversy in Indonesia.
Animals Australia complained after its Kuwaiti investigator found exported sheep were being sold in non-approved markets and killed in makeshift abattoirs, where slaughtermen ignored international guidelines.
The case has raised concerns from activists, Labor backbenchers, the Greens and independents that the new rules rely too much on industry self-regulation.

Since last year exporters have had to comply with rules that assure high welfare standards from farm to slaughter. Animals are tracked so officials know they are slaughtered in approved facilities as well as preventing on-selling of sheep into non-approved abattoirs and feedlots.
Exporters are also required to have supply chains independently audited, and the audit given to the department.

Halal abattoir meets growing opposition

A CAMPAIGN group opposing halal slaughter at a Skegness abattoir has gathered almost 100 members in a matter of days.
The ‘Say NO to halal slaughter in Skegness’ facebook group was set up after it was announced a business practising the religious methods was preparing to move into the town’s Heath Road abattoir.
Founding member Tess Turner, of Alford, claims the practices of slaughtering animals without stunning them first are inhumane and illegal if sold for consumption by those who are not Jewish or Muslim. She has also stressed that her motivations are purely based on animal welfare issues and in no way condones racism or religious intolerance.
She said: “The race card has been thrown at us time and time again but this is literally to do with the cruelty to animals.
“Animals will be made to suffer unnecessarily and it’s just not on.”
UK law requires animals to be stunned prior to slaughtering but Muslim and Jewish communities are given an exemption in accordance with their religion.
That exemption, however, does not cover slaughtering non-stunned animals for consumption by people other than Jews and Muslims.
Tess believes the increasing proportion of halal meat found in supermarkets and restaurants shows this law is being flouted and can’t understand the need for any more of the slaughterhouses.
Although statistics from the Food Standards Authority have revealed that more than 80 per cent of animals slaughtered in halal abattoirs in the UK are stunned before being killed, Tess believes the lower strength electrical stunning that is carried out to immobilise the animal, still leaves them conscious and sensitive to pain.
