Danish court puts four men on trial on terror charges

Four men have been put on trial in Copenhagen for allegedly trying to attack the offices of a newspaper that published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammed. The 2005 cartoons sparked outrage in the Muslim world.

Four men have pleaded not guilty of charges of plotting an attack on a Danish newspaper that published controversial caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad have gone on trial in Denmark.

If convicted, the three Swedish citizens and one Tunisian resident of Sweden could face a maximum of 16 years in prison.

All four men were arrested in December of 2010. At the time of their arrest, three of the suspects were allegedly on their way to the offices of the Jyllands-Posten newspaper in downtown Copenhagen, where police said they planned to “kill as many people as possible.”

Denmark releases more than 200 Somali pirates

“The last three years Danish warships has released more than 200 pirates after having first arrested them. Recently the Danish warship Absalon had to release 17 pirates because the Danish authorities were not able to get either the Seychelles, nor Kenya to put the pirates in front of a judge, even though they had collected evidence. The 17 pirates had been on Absalon since February 27th. They were arrested as the Danish warship stopped a pirate ship and rescued 18 Iranian and Pakistani hostages. Two of the hostages died.”

Breivik, the Norwegian terrorist, was acting out a sick minded, murderous role to satisfy his demented sense of extreme narcissism, a grossly exaggerated belief of self importance. His murderous deed had nothing to do with the issues he appears to be grappling with, but about projecting himself into the public eye, using any means to get there. It was all about him.

Norway killer Breivik is sane: psychiatric report

Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in Norway last July, was not psychotic at the time of the twin attacks and can thus be held criminally responsible, a new psychiatric probe concluded on Tuesday.

“The experts’ main conclusion is that the accused, Anders Behring Breivik, is not considered to have been psychotic at the time of the actions on July 22nd, 2011,” the Oslo district court said in a statement which reopens the debate on whether the self-confessed killer can be sent to prison.

“That means that he is considered criminally responsible at the time of the crime.”

The new evaluation counters the findings of an initial probe that found Breivik was suffering from “paranoid schizophrenia,” which meant he would most likely be sentenced to psychiatric care instead of prison.

On July 22nd, Breivik first set off a car bomb outside government buildings in Oslo, killing eight people, before travelling to the small island of Utøya north-west of the capital where he spent more than an hour methodically shooting and killing another 69 people, mostly teenagers.

The victims had been attending a summer camp hosted by the ruling Labour Party’s youth organisation.

Al-Shebaab Islamists have claimed responsibility for the explosion, whose target consisted of Somali and Ethiopian troops which took over the city from al-Qaeda associated Islamic fundamentalists in February. . .

France arrests Islamist suspects in fresh raids

Police in France have conducted new raids on Islamist suspects in the wake of the multiple killings by gunman Mohamed Merah.

At least 10 people were arrested as police conducted operations in several locations, mostly in the south.

Meanwhile 13 people arrested in raids last week were charged with terrorism and nine of them remanded in custody.

President Nicolas Sarkozy vowed to crack down on suspected radical Islamists after the Merah killings.

Expulsions

Most of Wednesday’s raids were in the south and south-west, notably in Marseille but also in Carpentras, Valence and Pau, police sources told Agence France-Presse news agency.

There was also a raid in Roubaix, close to the Belgian border.

The raids were organised by the DCRI intelligence agency and carried out by elite Raid and GIPN commandos.

One police source said: “Those arrested have a similar profile to Mohamed Merah. They are isolated individuals, who are self-radicalised.”

He told Reuters they were tracked on Islamists forums expressing extreme views and that they were planning to visit Afghanistan, Pakistan and West Africa to wage jihad, or holy war.

The operation comes less than a week after raids that targeted men who are believed to be associated with a radical group called Forsane Alizza, or Knights of Pride, which was banned last month.

MapThe group’s leader Mohamed Achamlane is one of nine people remanded in custody while police investigate allegations that they stashed weapons and plotted to kidnap a judge.

    • A crazed driver turned his car into a 50mph motorised battering ram as he tried to mow down a crowd of terrified pedestrians on a night out in Manchester.

These dramatic CCTV images show the moment the deranged driver screeched to a halt, did a U-turn and careered down the wrong side of a city centre street directly towards a group of revellers.

The businessman said he committed the act of extreme road rage because the group of people had been mocking him as he drew up at a junction.

Footage taken from a camera high above the street shows Ali exchange words with the pedestrians before screeching away, only to turn around a few yards down the street and drive directly at the pedestrians.

 

The images show an oncoming taxi pass by as Ali made the potentially deadly manoeuvre. The pedestrians are only saved by a lamppost as they dart for cover.

Ali then slammed his car into reverse and sped off backwards into the night as his victims furiously punched the bodywork of the blue vehicle.

Amazingly no one was hurt in the 4am incident which occurred on October 14 last year after the group left a bar in Manchester city centre.

Ali drove the battered car home but later handed himself in after he saw footage of the attack on BBC TV’s Six O’Clock News.

US offers bounty for Pakistan militant Hafiz Saeed

The United States has offered a $10 million (£6.2 million) bounty for the founder of the Pakistani militant group blamed for the 2008 attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai that killed 166 people, a move that could complicate US-Pakistan relations at a tense time.

Hafiz Saeed founded Lashkar-e-Taiba in the 1980s, allegedly with Pakistani support to pressure India over the disputed territory of Kashmir.

Pakistan banned the group in 2002 under pressure from the US, but it operates with relative freedom – even doing charity work using government money.

The US designated Lashkar-e-Taiba a foreign terrorist organisation in December 2001.

But Saeed operates openly in Pakistan, giving public speeches and appearing on TV talk shows. The US also offered up to two million dollars (£1.2 million) for Lashkar-e-Taiba’s deputy leader, Hafiz Abdul Rahman Makki, who is also Saeed’s brother-in-law.

The reward for Saeed is one of the highest offered by the US and is equal to the amount for Taliban chief Mullah Omar. Only Ayman al-Zawahri, who succeeded Osama bin Laden as al Qaida chief, fetches a higher bounty – $25 million (£15.6 million).

The bounties were posted on the US state department rewards for justice website late on Monday, the US embassy in Islamabad said.

The state department website describes Saeed as a former professor of Arabic and engineering who heads an organisation “dedicated to installing Islamist rule over parts of India and Pakistan”. It also noted that six of the people killed in the 2008 Mumbai attacks were American citizens.

Indian external affairs minister SM Krishna welcomed the US announcement, saying it would signal to Lashkar-e-Taiba and its patrons that the international community remains united in fighting terrorism.

“The decision reflects the commitment of India and the United States to bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai terrorist attack to justice and continuing efforts to combat terrorism,” he said.

A close aide to Saeed said the group was surprised by the decision and was formulating its response.

WILLIE Brigitte, a Muslim convert arrested in Australia and extradited to France in 2003, is one of the 17 people detained after dawn raids against suspected Islamists, French police said today.

The head of France’s counterespionage agency says that Islamist radicals detained in a sweep around the country on Friday had a stash of arms, did physical training and may have been preparing a kidnapping.

Police continued to question the 17 people on Saturday, a day after they were taken into custody in the Paris region, Nantes, Marseille, Nice, and Toulouse, a police official close to the investigation said.

Buddhism is in fact the religion of peace. So much so that it is a wonder that it exists at all, as when it is attacked, it typically folds like a cheap suit. Tibet springs lightly to mind.

France arrests 19 suspected Islamists in dawn raids

Police in France have arrested 19 suspected Islamists and seized weapons in a series of dawn raids, President Nicolas Sarkozy says.

The raids were in Toulouse, the home of gunman Mohamed Merah, and other cities.

Merah, who killed seven people in three separate attacks, was buried in Toulouse on Thursday after being killed in a shoot-out with police on 22 March.

Police have been hunting possible accomplices but sources said there was no direct link with the raids.

Merah’s brother, Abdelkader, has been charged with aiding him and police are hunting a third man said to be involved in the theft of a scooter that Merah used in all the killings.

Mr Sarkozy told Europe 1 radio after Friday’s raids: “It’s our duty to guarantee the security of the French people. We have no choice. It’s absolutely indispensable.”

Forsane Alizza

The raids were carried out by the domestic intelligence agency, the DCRI, with the help of the elite Raid police commando group, Agence France-Presse news agency reports.

Several of the raids were in Toulouse, particularly the Mirail quarter, sources told AFP.
