Libyan rebels are consolidating their hold in the capital city of Tripoli–but the end of Moammar Ghadafi’s strong-arm rule may not create an opening to secure the extradition of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, who’d been convicted for helping to plot the 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. In August 2009, a Scottish prison board  released al-Megrahi from serving a life sentence and allowed him to return to Libya, on humanitarian grounds: Doctors determined that the bomber, who was suffering from terminal cancer, had just three months to live. But last month–some two years later–al-Megrahi was spotted on video attending a pro-Gadhafi rally in Tripoli.

It seems that al-Megrahi’s health has lately taken another turn for the worse, however: When CNN’s Nic Robertson found al-Megrahi over the weekend at a villa in Tripoli, he was unable to question him about his role in the terrorist attack  that killed 270 people. Al-Megrahi was unable to focus on any questions, since he was drifting in and out of consciousness, Robertson reported Sunday:

“I was expecting al-Megrahi to be in a comfy armchair, but he was not,” Robertson reported. “Beneath the blankets [of his hospital bed] was al-Megrahi, eyes shut, inert. … The oxygen mask on his face, … the drip hanging a foot from his head. His skin seemed paper-thin, his face sallow and sunken. … There is no movement. His eyes remain shut.”

Al-Megrahi’s son Khaled told Robertson that the family has been trying to care for his father at home; he’d been removed from a Tripoli hospital shortly before the Libyan rebels entered the capital city last week. “If you send him to Scotland, he will die by the way. Here or there,” Khaled told CNN.

Meanwhile, a representative of the Libyan opposition National Transition Council said Sunday that the body has no plans to extradite al-Megrahi to the United Kingdom or the United States.

“Al-Megrahi has already been judged once and he will not be judged again,” NTC minister Mohammed al-Alagi told reporters in Tripoli Sunday, the New York Times reported. “We do not hand over Libyan citizens; Gadhafi does.”

The State Department said Monday however that it has requested in the past week that Libya’s transitional leaders review the Megrahi case. Continue Reading →

An interesting story about San Francisco and totalitarian impulses.

I have no idea about the veracity or quality or agenda of this site. I am still uncertain as to the events that took place a week ago in San Fran. Hopefully some readers who are familiar with this story can flesh out the obviously missing details. I will post the first little bit here but please click through for the whole story and if you do know anything, please place it in the comments.

This is a disturbing trend and might well be a full chess move away from a government by the people and of the people, and towards an us Vs. them relationship between the government and the people.

Big Brother Shuts Off San Fran Cell Phones

August 13, 2011. San Francisco. The news caused many Americans to do a double-take. They just couldn’t believe what they heard yesterday. Official statements from San Francisco city officials either contradicted themselves at best, or pointed to the tactics of a dictatorship at worst. Either way, the city of San Francisco has just brought the US into the international world of government crackdowns on peaceful citizen protests.

Protestors prepare to hit back

The trouble all started on July 3rd of this year when San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit police shot and killed a 45 year old homeless man named Charles Blair Hill who was allegedly throwing objects at officers before brandishing a 4-inch pocket knife. With much of the area’s citizens outraged by the actions of the police, coalition groups have been organizing marches and other coordinated protests in response.

One such protest was scheduled by a handful of activists for Friday at the very same BART station that Hill was killed at. On Thursday however, the day before the organized protest, cell phone signals throughout four downtown San Francisco BART stations went completely dead. With no protest activity in sight, obviously nervous city officials began taking to the airwaves to explain their actions to outraged commuters. By midnight, the blowback had reached national media outlets where networks like CNN and Fox News pressured San Francisco BART representatives for credible answers.

Fort Morgan meatpacking plant strives, struggles to accommodate Muslim workforce

FORT MORGAN — One afternoon this summer, Asha Abuukar said, she approached her supervisor at the Cargill Meat Solutions plant and got permission to go on break.

She washed in accordance with Islamic principles and prayed in a “reflection room” Cargill has set aside where beef is boxed and sealed.

When she returned two minutes late, she said, her supervisor told her that if it happened again, she would be fired.

“I’m sorry,” Abuukar, 41, who also runs a Somali market in town, recalled replying. “I was only praying.”

Although Cargill’s Fort Morgan operation has escaped controversy over accommodating the religious needs of its Muslim workforce, an undercurrent of problems exists, according to current and former workers and Somali translators.

Company officials say they respect religious rights and follow the law but cannot undermine a plant that produces 4 million pounds of beef daily.

“We know that some of our employees would like a guaranteed prayer time every day,” said Cargill spokesman Michael Martin. “That is not the legal requirement, and it would be impractical to accommodate this without shutting down the production line.”

He said the company accommodates the vast majority of daily prayer requests.

Under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, employers cannot deny a “reasonable” religious accommodation request as long as it does not pose an undue hardship, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Muslims pray five times a day at prescribed times that move depending on the sun’s position. That can pose challenges for plants with many Muslim workers. One-fourth of Cargill’s 2,000 workers are Somali, company officials say.

The number of federal workplace-discrimination complaints filed by Muslims shot up in 2009 and 2010, to almost 800 each year, the EEOC says. Those numbers eclipsed the decade’s previous high mark the year after 9/11. Continue Reading →

Islam being taught at US military bases. No, not academically.

Family Security Matters

On August 7, 2011, in a chapel converted to a mosque on Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas, the U.S. government officially became a sponsor of the Mahdi. No, not Barack Husein Obama, but a much more serious and overt candidate: Adnan Oktar, a.k.a. “Harun Yahya,” the Turkish Creationist whose followers consider him the “rightly-guided one” of Islamic tradition, expected to come before the end of time to make the entire world Muslim.

Mahdism was my original area of academic specialization within Islamic history (about which I wrote my doctoral dissertation, first book and numerous articles, and which I track via this website); I interviewed Oktar in Istanbul a few years ago; and, finally, I spent time in the military, both enlisted and commissioned, the latter training to be a chaplain. So I have some familiarity with all aspects of this troubling story, which came to my attention early on 14 August 2011 via photos posted to my Facebook page by contacts within Oktar’s organization.  I contacted the Public Affairs Officer (PAO) at Lackland and, in summary, was told the following: that such “religious education” classes are provided every weekend from “other” faith perspectives (Latter Day Saints, Buddhists, Pentecostals) besides the main ones (Protestant, Roman Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Eastern Orthodox); that these are entirely voluntary; that the “program chaplain …was aware of and approved of the speaker.” Continue Reading →

“Cut the tongue of this lowly Jew”: Muslim offended by joke threatens David Letterman

It should be interesting to see how Letterman makes this into Sarah Palin or one of her handicapped relatives fault.

LOS ANGELES – A Muslim militant has urged American followers to assassinate U.S. talk show host David Letterman, saying his tongue deserved to be cut out, a U.S. intelligence monitoring group said Wednesday.

The SITE intelligence group said the death threat was posted on an online website used by militants after the writer became upset by a joke Letterman made about the death of a leading member of al-Qaida killed in an air strike in Pakistan.

The militant called on Muslims in the United States to “cut the tongue of this lowly Jew and shut it forever,” the threat against Letterman said, according to a translation by SITE. The popular late-night television host is not Jewish.

The FBI said it was taking the threat seriously.

The writer was angered by watching Letterman on his show drawing his finger across his neck while talking about the June death of senior al-Qaida figure Ilyas Kashmiri.

The message was posted on the website Shumukh al-Islam. SITE analyst Adam Raisman told Entertainment Weekly the website was “a clearing house for al-Qaida material” and drew supporters of the group headed by the late Osama bin Laden.

Executives at broadcaster CBS and a spokesman for Letterman declined Wednesday to comment on the threat.

Tim Flannelly, an FBI spokesman in New York, said the agency was looking into the matter.

“The FBI takes all threats seriously and we will run it down like we do all threats,” Flannelly said.

A Muslim group in 2010 threatened the makers of “South Park” after the animated satirical show depicted the Prophet Mohammad in a bear suit. Most Muslims consider any depiction of the founder of Islam as offensive.

A 21-year old man from Virginia was sentenced in February to 25 years in prison for publishing the home addresses of the “South Park” creators and urging readers to pay them a visit, as well as trying to help a Somali militant group.

Mob of black people assault and injure several white people in Philadelphia

I can’t get lots of details on this. I truly and genuinely hope I am not reading this right. Like its a hoax and no one was hurt and actually these people all go to the same golf club every Friday night. Hopefully some readers can put links in the comments to show how this in fact is not at all how it looks. Did irrational leftism actually succeed in sowing seeds of discontent where there is no genuine excuse for it to the extent that civilization is coming undone? If so, what is the hope for a superior replacement? I never hear about that really.

America’s sharia compliant forces

From The National Review

Our Sharia-Compliant Afghan War

Our policy in Afghanistan is part tragedy, part farce.

In a better time, when the burdens of war were shared by an engaged nation and not shouldered exclusively by military families making up less than 1 percent of the population, the high farce that is the Afghanistan mission would have been obvious before President Obama uttered one word on Wednesday night. All you’d need to know is the story that came to light the day before.

Turns out that the U.S. government has embraced a core tenet of sharia — that archaic corpus of Islamic law that Mitt Romney recently assured us would never gain traction in America. Patrick Poole reported at Pajamas Media on Tuesday that the secretary of the army has just granted “conscientious objector” status to Pfc. Nasser Abdo, a Muslim American soldier who refused to deploy to Afghanistan. Heeding the admonitions of CAIR and other Muslim Brotherhood operatives, the Pentagon accepts the claim that sharia forbids Muslims from assisting infidels in a war against Muslim forces in an Islamic land.

Thousands back Tulsa officer ordered to Muslim worship

I thought it was very clearly stated in US law that the government will have no compulsory religion.

From Creeping Sharia

An update on these previous posts, via Thousands back Tulsa officer ordered to Muslim worship.

Tens of thousands of Americans are lining up in support of a police officer in Tulsa, Okla., who was punished for refusing his department’s order to attend an “Islamic proselytizing event” even as a legal team representing the captain is petitioning the court to add new allegations of misbehavior by his superiors to a lawsuit over the dispute.

WND reported earlier when a legal action was brought by attorneys with the Thomas More Law Center on behalf of Paul Fields.

Chief Charles Jordan

Named as defendants are the city, police chief Charles W. Jordan and deputy chief Alvin Daryl Webster.

The lawsuit focuses on the officer’s constitutional and civil rights, and along with a resolution of Fields’ concerns, it seeks an injunction preventing “enforcement of defendants’ unconstitutional acts, policies, practices, procedures and/or customs.”

At issue were orders by the department that Fields participate in an event at a local Islamic center that has been described as a proselytizing campaign. The Tulsa Police Department had told officers to attend a “Law Enforcement Appreciation Day” organized by the Islamic Society of Tulsa. The invitation said the officers would be given tours of the mosque, meet the mosque’s leadership, be given presentations of “beliefs, human rights, women” and “watch the 2-2:45 weekly congregational prayer service.”

Meanwhile, a legal team working on Fields’ behalf, the attorneys of the Thomas More Law Center, told WND they are seeking court permission to amend their original complaint over the city’s actions to include the specific damages that have accumulated.

The damages include two weeks of being suspended from pay for his refusal to attend the Islamic event and the threat that he will not be considered for promotion for a time, according to Law Center president Richard Thompson.
