This news link has a comprehensive list of tweets and other indicators that give a pretty good idea of what this guys mental processes are. Frankly after reading it, I would lean towards Islam flavoured crazy.
If this witness is to be believed the motive for the attack is a slam dunk.

The audio CLEARLY does not match the video. But the camera also appears to be indoors. Even so, thats some pretty darn good window glass for a coffee shop. But it may not be misrepresenting the situation.

Local media reported that the driver was believed to have stabbed his brother earlier in the day.
Rebecca Russo, a bystander, said she saw three people hit by the car.
“We were just standing on Bourke Street and we heard a bit of a crash coming from the Mall,” she told Fairfax Media.
“People were running out of the way, they were going very very fast. I saw him hit a few people. I saw bodies flying into the air.”
There are lots of videos and photos and so on at the above link but a fantastic wealth of lack of eye witness reports and although the guy appears to be screaming with his head out his car window we cannot hear what he says.
Melbourne ‘attacker’ NAMED as ‘Islamic’ who ‘knows how to take you dogs down’
The 26-year-old has been named as the man police believe is responsible for deliberately driving a maroon coloured Holden car into the crowd in Bourke Street and Queen’s Street in the city centre just before 2pm.
These are the first pictures of the suspect just before he was seen ploughing into shoppers and lunchtime workers, killing four, including a man and a woman in their 30s and a young child.
At least 25 people are thought to have been injured.
“The suspect, who was known to police and was on bail at the time, can be seen hanging out of the car’s window as he appears to be screaming at pedestrians, moments before he drove into the pedestrianised shopping area.”
Funny that NO ONE is reporting WHAT he was screaming. Was it, “RUN RUN MY BRAKES DON’T WORK”? Or was it, “ALAS YOU ABATTOIR!?” I think it matters.

Erika Steinbach, who’s been with Chancellor Merkel’s CDU for 43 years, has strongly criticized the leader’s handling of the migrant crisis. She claims conservatives have been sidelined in Germany’s main ruling party.
Steinbach, who is the Christian Democrats Union’s (CDU’s) human rights spokesperson, has stepped down from the party, she revealed in an interview with a German newspaper on Saturday.
The 73-year-old has fallen out several times with Chancellor Angela Merkel over the German leader’s “open door” policy towards migrants, which saw nearly 1.2 million new migrants reach the country over two years.
(Ontarians will know the feeling well of a Conservative party alienating its conservative candidates. In the case of the Ontario PC party, a significant number of candidates who had actual conservative values have been replaced with hand picked pro-Islamic and far left leaning candidates, some of whom were actual Liberals till this upcoming election, and have not renounced any of those values or policies)

Recruits of the ISIS, more educated than expected

Various objectives
According to the study, the recruits visited Syria with “various” objectives. “Some wanted to provide assistance to the administration of the organization, others arrived with the desire to end their lives by joining their ranks, and others just wanted to fight,” the study points out.
“The proportion of those wishing to participate in administrative tasks but also that of candidates for suicide increases with the level of education,” says the study.
The study concludes that marginalization “appears to be a risk of radicalization,” pointing to “unemployment” as one of the causes of commitment from IS.

A device exploded in Seaside Park, New Jersey, Saturday morning as about 5,000 people were set to run a 5k Marine charity race and police are investigating another suspicious package in the shore town, authorities said.
The explosive device went off in a garbage can on D Street and Ocean Avenue at about 9:30 a.m., police said.
A second device is being dismantled by the bomb squad…
Luckily, nobody got killed or injured…this time.
Australian police link jihad attack directly with Islam and the Islamic State
1, Man in Australia being charged with Islamic State inspired attack
A 22-year-old man charged with a terrorist attack in south-west Sydney was inspired by the so-called Islamic State group, NSW Police allege.
He is accused of stabbing a 59-year-old man a number of times at a reserve on Olhlfsen Road at Minto on Saturday afternoon.
The victim suffered injuries to his body and hands, and remains in hospital in a serious condition.
(Oz-Rita explains that in Australia, a reserve means something like a federal or territorial park, and not a lawless place with cheap cigarettes that taste like cat poo. Also that this is the first attack clearly being identified as an Islamic State attack with no attempts at deflection. Rita also explains that this breaking attack is also connected to this Islamic State shout-out for more Individual Jihad, as called for in Islamic scriptures.

The Australian explains that the following quoted text is from the IS online magazine but does not link to it. I suspect a link will show up in the comments shortly. If it does, one may wish to view it as a necessary function of self defense to know what the enemy is advocating and planning rather than pretend it is being posted to support the enemy’s mission. Not showing the public is more dangerous than showing it and always has been. Only a post modern and culturally Marxist vision would suggest the public should not be made aware of a direct threat to them.

Officers from PSP attacked in the Valley of Amoreira were not wearing uniforms
Two officers of the Public Security Police (PSP) were attacked Wednesday while trying to identify a man in Moita in the Valley of Amoreira, who ended up to be shot dead. The officers “did not wear uniform and used a normal car,” according to police sources.
“The two officers of the PSP, who usually do notifications and belong to the Police Criminal Investigation in Barreiro, were in a car wearing civilian clothes. “An officer was injured with an ax and a knife in the chest area near the neck. He is in the hospital, in stable condition. The other PSP officer suffered only a slight cut on his arm and managed to escape,” she said.
The Judicial Police were at the scene to investigate and hear a report from the officer who suffered only a cut on his arm, who is “very upset” about what happened.
The warning to the District Command of Relief Operations (CDOS) in Setubal was given at 10:44 am, concerning this event that occurred on Avenue Almada Negreiros in Vale da Amoreira, Moita county.

IN OTHER NEWS – Toulouse: a policeman was attacked with a knife at a police station
Claiming to be filing a complaint, a man broke into the police station Rempart Saint-Etienne on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., where he tried to grab the service firearm from a police officer, security deputy.
When he wasn’t successful, he took out a knife and struck the officer in the throat. The attacker was overpowered and transferred to the central police station.

UPDATE 2.10PM: A British man stabbed during a violent attack at a Home Hill backpackers hostel remains in a critical condition at the Townsville Hospital. A 29-year-old French man accused of stabbing three people and a dog while yelling “Allahu Akbar” is in a stable condition.
A 21-year-old British woman was killed during the frenzied attack, which occurred about 11.15pm last night.

The truck driver who killed 84 people on a Nice beachfront had accomplices and appears to have been plotting his attack for months, the Paris prosecutor said Thursday.
Prosecutor Francois Molins said five suspects currently in custody are facing preliminary terrorism charges for their alleged roles in helping 31-year-old Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel in the July 14 attack in the southern French city. Molins’ office, which oversees terrorism investigations, opened a judicial inquiry Thursday into a battery of charges for the suspects, including complicity to murder and possessing weapons tied to a terrorist enterprise.
The suspects are four men — two Franco-Tunisians, a Tunisian and an Albanian — and one woman of dual French-Albanian nationality, Molins said. The driver was a Tunisian man who had been living in Nice for several years.
