When I first saw a book by Colin Flaherty with the title “White Girl Bleed a Lot,” I instantly knew what it was about, even though I had not seen the book reviewed anywhere, and knew nothing about the author.

That is because I had encountered that phrase before, while doing research for the four new chapters on intellectuals and race that I wrote for the revised edition of my own book Intellectuals and Society, published this year.

US and Iran may be at war in 2013, predicts former US envoy to Israel

Former United States ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk gave a dire prediction of impending conflict between the US and Iran next year.

If a negotiated solution on Iran’s nuclear drive cannot be achieved in the next six months, “I am afraid that 2013 is going to be a year in which we’re going to have a military confrontation with Iran,” Indyk said on the CBS news show “Face the Nation” on Sunday

“There is still time, perhaps six months, even by Prime Minister Netanyahu’s own time table to try to see if a negotiated solution can be worked out,” Indyk said, adding that “every effort and every chance” should be exhausted before employing a military strike against the Islamic Republic.

He also noted that Obama and Netanyahu don’t view the Iranian nuclear issue so differently. The US president is committed to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, he said.

Indyk joined other policy experts who discussed, among other Mideast concerns, Israel’s pressuring of the US to set “red lines” for Iran’s nuclear program that, if crossed, would trigger military action.

The U.S. State Department is actively considering negotiations with the Egyptian government for the transfer of custody of Omar Abdel-Rahman, also known as “the Blind Sheikh,” for humanitarian and health reasons, a source close to the the Obama administration told TheBlaze.

The Department of Justice, however, told TheBlaze that Rahman is serving a life sentence and is not considered for possible “release.”  Previous calls to the State Department were referred to the Department of Justice and so far, the State Department has neither confirmed nor denied the report.

Glenn Beck revealed the controversial news on his show Monday.

The Blind Sheikh is currently serving a life sentence in American prison for his role in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, but the newly-elected Islamist government in Egypt has been actively petitioning his release.  Many have pinpointed a cause of last week‘s unrest in in the country to be protests over the Blind Sheikh’s release — not an anti-Muslim YouTube video.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal authorities have identified a southern California man once convicted of financial crimes as the key figure behind the anti-Muslim film that ignited mob violence against U.S. embassies across the Mideast, a U.S. law enforcement official said Thursday.

Attorney General Eric Holder said that Justice Department officials had opened a criminal investigation into the deaths of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other diplomats killed during an attack on the American mission in Benghazi. It was not immediately clear whether authorities were focusing on the California filmmaker as part of that probe.

A federal law enforcement official said Thursday that Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, was the man behind “Innocence of Muslims,” a film denigrating Islam and the Prophet Muhammad that sparked protests earlier in the week in Egypt and Libya and now in Yemen. U.S. authorities are investigating whether the deaths of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Libya came during a terrorist attack.

Statement on the Death of American Personnel in Benghazi, Libya

State.Gov:

Press Statement

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
September 12, 2012

It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the death of four American personnel in Benghazi, Libya yesterday. Among them were United States Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and Foreign Service Information Management Officer, Sean Smith. We are still making next of kin notifications for the other two individuals. Our hearts go out to all their families and colleagues.

A 21 year veteran of the Foreign Service, Ambassador Stevens died last night from injuries he sustained in the attack on our office in Benghazi.

I had the privilege of swearing in Chris for his post in Libya only a few months ago. He spoke eloquently about his passion for service, for diplomacy and for the Libyan people. This assignment was only the latest in his more than two decades of dedication to advancing closer ties with the people of the Middle East and North Africa which began as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco. As the conflict in Libya unfolded, Chris was one of the first Americans on the ground in Benghazi. He risked his own life to lend the Libyan people a helping hand to build the foundation for a new, free nation. He spent every day since helping to finish the work that he started. Chris was committed to advancing America’s values and interests, even when that meant putting himself in danger.

Sean Smith was a husband and a father of two, who joined the Department ten years ago. Like Chris, Sean was one of our best. Prior to arriving in Benghazi, he served in Baghdad, Pretoria, Montreal, and most recently The Hague.

All the Americans we lost in yesterday’s attacks made the ultimate sacrifice. We condemn this vicious and violent attack that took their lives, which they had committed to helping the Libyan people reach for a better future.

America’s diplomats and development experts stand on the front lines every day for our country. We are honored by the service of each and every one of them.

US official dies in Libya consulate attack in Benghazi

 BBC:

The US Consulate in Benghazi is seen in flames during a protest by an armed group said to have been protesting a film being produced in the US, 11 September 2012
The US has condemned the attack on its consulate “in the strongest terms”

An American has been killed and at least one other wounded after militiamen stormed the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi, officials say.

It is believed the protest was held over a US-produced film that is said to be insulting to the Prophet Muhammad.

The building was set on fire after armed men raided the compound with grenades.

Protests have also been held at the US embassy in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

In the attack in Benghazi, unidentified armed men stormed the grounds, shooting at buildings and throwing handmade bombs into the compound.

Security forces returned fire but Libyan officials say they were overwhelmed.

“One American official was killed and another injured in the hand. The other staff members were evacuated and are safe and sound,” Libya’s deputy interior minister Wanis al-Sharif told AFP.

Egyptian protesters scale US Embassy wall in Cairo

By MAGGIE MICHAEL, Associated Press – 22 minutes ago

CAIRO (AP) — Mainly ultraconservative protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Egypt’s capital Tuesday and brought down the American flag, replacing it with a black Islamist flag to protest a U.S.-produced film attacking the Prophet Muhammad. Hours later, armed men in eastern Libya also stormed the US consulate there and set it on fire as anger spread.

It was the first time ever that the U.S. Embassy in Cairo has been breached and comes as Egypt is struggling to overcome months of unrest following the ouster of Hosni Mubarak’s autocratic regime. U.S. officials said no Americans were reported harmed in the assaults in Cairo or the eastern city of Benghazi.

The unrest in Cairo began when hundreds of protesters marched to the downtown embassy, gathering outside its walls and chanting against the movie and the U.S.

“Say it, don’t fear: Their ambassador must leave,” the crowd chanted.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan –  Pakistan’s powerful spy agency regards America as its “worst enemy,” and the government’s claims that it is cooperating with the US are a sham to extract billions of dollars in American aid, according to the CIA informant jailed for his role in hunting down Usama bin Laden.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Shakil Afridi, the medical doctor who helped pinpoint bin Laden’s Abbottabad compound before last year’s raid by SEAL Team 6, described brutal torture at the hands of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, and said the agency is openly hostile to the U.S.

New York City ranks as Number One in mosque construction

The number of mosques in the United States has grown by 74 percent in the past 11 years, up from 1,209 in 2001 to a substantial 2,106 in 2011. The statistics was compiled and released by Faith Communities Today, affiliated with the Hartford Seminary’s Hartford Institute for Religion Research earlier this year.

The Islamic Society of Vermont is the only official mosque listed for the entire state of Vermont.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) – The survey found that mosque construction has typically been in larger metropolitan U.S. areas. The 10 states with the largest number of mosques are New York, with 257, California with 246, Texas with 166, Florida with 118, Illinois with 109, New Jersey with 109, Pennsylvania with 99, Michigan with 77, Georgia with 69 and Virginia with 62.

The state of Vermont has the least number of mosques, with only one located in the entire state.

In terms of metropolitan areas, Greater New York City again led with 192 mosques. Southern California has 120, Greater Chicago has 90, Greater Philadelphia has 63 and Greater Detroit’s 63 mosques rounded out the top five metropolitan areas for mosque population.

The survey was the first of two reports on American mosques released this year.

The first survey, “Basic Characteristics of the American Mosque, Attitudes of Mosque Leaders” includes data on the growth of mosques in the U.S. and attitudes of their leaders.
