US official dies in Libya consulate attack in Benghazi

The US Consulate in Benghazi is seen in flames during a protest by an armed group said to have been protesting a film being produced in the US, 11 September 2012
The US has condemned the attack on its consulate “in the strongest terms”

An American has been killed and at least one other wounded after militiamen stormed the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi, officials say.

It is believed the protest was held over a US-produced film that is said to be insulting to the Prophet Muhammad.

The building was set on fire after armed men raided the compound with grenades.

Protests have also been held at the US embassy in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

In the attack in Benghazi, unidentified armed men stormed the grounds, shooting at buildings and throwing handmade bombs into the compound.

Security forces returned fire but Libyan officials say they were overwhelmed.

“One American official was killed and another injured in the hand. The other staff members were evacuated and are safe and sound,” Libya’s deputy interior minister Wanis al-Sharif told AFP.

  1. And no matter what “they” say, the film or anyone connected with it are NOT responsible for any death or destruction. The blame lays squarely on the shoulders of the idiots who make the decision to murder & destroy. And I spit on any apologist that has the gall to apologize for any of this. Only the perpetrators of the mayhem should be apologizing.

  2. I wish US Marines were there, led by an officer who could order to “waste the motherf…ers”. But unfortunately this is not a Hollywood movie. What a shame…

  3. tit for tat, lets have a all out war and end this once and for all, i for one am getting sick to death of everyone pussy footing around the issues that one day will end in one side winning and the other scurring back to the rock they crawled out from

  4. Irish the war is coming, the peace at any cost crowd has so far prevented us from fighting it as a war of survival, their actions are delaying our response and will increase the cost both in money and lives of the war.
