Military Police forces working at the Salem checkpoint caught two Palestinians carrying 10 pipe bombs, a gun and several bullets. The bombs were dismantled and the Palestinians were turned over to security forces.

An initial investigation suggests that the soldiers detected two Palestinians in their 20s approaching a checkpoint near the military court carrying two bags. After a check they discovered the contents of the bags.

Closer ties to Israel upsets India’s Muslims

From People of Shambhala.
India has been working hard to cement its relationship with Israel lately, consequently upsetting many of the southeast Asian nation’s Muslim organizations. On a recent visit to Israel India’s External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna described the two nation states as natural allies, and as facing international terrorism.

During the visit, it was agreed that Israel would be allowed to open an embassy in Bangalore.

Mr. E. Aboobacker, national president of the Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI) said in a statement on Friday, January 13, that “India seeking to forge a joint strategy with Israel to deal with the scourge of terrorism is a big joke as the latter over nine decades has been massacring unarmed Palestinians, including women and children, with impunity.”

“it is pertinent to note,” the Mr. Aboobacker said, “that increasing cooperation between New Delhi and Tel Aviv makes India’s stand on Palestine imbroglio a farce,” adding that the closer cooperation contradicted India’s position on the Palestinian issue.

Prof. Basir Ahmed Khan of the Indian Union Muslim League described the visit as a “travesty of justice” adding that “what Israel was facing is an struggle of Palestinians to free their own country from the illegal occupation of Israel; this cannot be equated with terrorism.”

E. M. Abdul Rahiman, Chairman of Popular Front of India, also described the diplomatic visit as… read more.

‘Egyptian Revolutionary Guard’ Threatens to Attack U.S. Embassy

From MEMRI:

In recent days, media in Egypt and elsewhere have reported that an organization calling itself “The Egyptian Revolutionary Guard” planned to attack the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on January 25, 2012, the anniversary of the Egyptian revolution, just as its members had previously attacked the Israeli Embassy in Cairo on September 9, 2011. Pro-Hizbullah activist Muhammad Al-Hadari, who calls himself the organization’s secretary-general, admitted that he had called to attack the U.S. Embassy, but said that he had later withdrawn this call after discussing the matter with the members of his Facebook group. Subsequently, an announcement on behalf of the organization was posted on Facebook, stating that the January 25 march on the U.S. Embassy was cancelled, but threatening to hold it at a later date if Israel continued Judaizing Jerusalem and attacking Gaza.

Egypt says annual Israeli pilgrimage to Jewish tomb in Nile Delta ‘impossible’ this year

Maybe the Israelis should try not letting Muslims get to their little temple in Jerusalem. That would get a little quid-pro-quo no doubt.

Washington Post:

By Associated Press, Published: January 10 | Updated: Wednesday, January 11, 7:06 AM

CAIRO — Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said Wednesday it had told Israel that it would not be “appropriate” for Israeli pilgrims to make an annual visit to the tomb of a 19th-century Jewish holy man in the Nile Delta, as activists mobilized to block the pilgrimage route.Ceremonies at the tomb of Rabbi Yaakov Abu Hatzira have triggered yearly political sparring in Egypt throughout most of the last decade, with Islamists, nationalists, and others claiming that the government by allowing the pilgrimage is pursuing an unpopular policy of normalization with the country’s former enemy.

Egypt notified Israel two months ago that it would be “impossible to hold the annual ceremony because of the political and security situation in the country,” the official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

An Islamist politician involved in organizing protests against the march meanwhile said that visiting Abu Hatzira’s gravesite in the village of Daymouta, 180 kilometers (112 miles) north of Cairo would be a “suicide mission” for Israelis, because of popular opposition to their presence in Egypt.

Hamas prime minister in Tunisia: Muslims will replace US-backed chaos in the Middle East with revolution.

Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh declared Sunday that the Muslim revolutions born out of the “Arab Spring” would replace US-backed chaos in the Middle East, Hamas affiliate Al Resalah quoted the Hamas leader as saying.

“We are among those who will create a new Middle East. We have created a glorious revolution that will bring back the nation and its glory in place of the chaos that the American administration had so desired,” Haniyeh told a gathering of Tunisian Islamist Ennahda party supporters in Tunis.

According to the report, tens of thousands of Tunisians gathered outside the palatial government complex in the Tunisian capital to see Haniyeh speak, chanting in support of “Palestinian liberation.”

Protesters also chanted “Death to Israel” and “the army of Mohammed is back,” as Haniyeh reiterated his pledge not “to lay down our arms” or recognize Israel, according to AFP.

The Ennahda party, banned under the rule of ousted Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, has since become the country’s largest party, garnering 40 percent of votes in last October’s parliamentary elections.

Haniyeh has traveled Arab and Muslim nations on a Middle East tour that began December 25, including Egypt, Sudan, Turkey and Tunisia.

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, which claims it has won at least 41 percent of the seats in Egypt’s lower house of parliament in the third round of voting, on Saturday denied remarks made by U.S. State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland that the Islamist group made guarantees to the U.S. that it would continue to respect Egypt’s peace treaty with Israel.

In an interview over the weekend with the London-based Al-Hayat newspaper, the deputy head of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, Essam Arian, said, “We never promised that we would honor the peace treaty with Israel. The treaty is not sacred and we can and should make changes in it.”

Another senior member of the party told the London-based newspaper Asharq Alawsat, “The movement’s position is not to recognize the Zionist entity and not to recognize peace agreements with hostile entities, and this position will never change.”

Tensions on the oil shipping lanes in the Gulf have escalated with the announcement of new naval exercises by Iran‘s Revolutionary Guards and news that Israel and the US are planning to carry out extensive joint manoeuvres in the region.

The naval commander for the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, said the drill in February would be “different compared to previous exercises held by the IRGC”. The Iranian navy finished 10 days of exercises in the Gulf on Monday, during which it tested a range of new missiles. It warned that Iran could close the strait of Hormuz, the narrowest point in the Gulf, through which a fifth of the world’s traded oil passes.

On the same day, the Israeli military said it was preparing for joint exercises with the US to rehearse missile defence and co-operation between the forces. The manoeuvres involve thousands of troops, have been planned for some time and were hailed by Israeli and US officials as their biggest joint drill.
