German-Christian Iconography. What does it reveal?

A good friend of the Counter-Jihad had spent some time as a fine arts major in a German University.

She informed me that there is, it seems, a curious tradition in German classical art that many of us may find quite intriguing,

The term for it is “Mondsichelmadonna” which means “sickle moon Madonna.”

The images are of the Virgin Mary, usually holding something like a scepter, and standing on a crescent moon.

The moon, I am told, must also have a specific feature.

The moon must have a face, and that face must look unhappy.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The icons can be seen all over Germany, although they are not so common as perhaps once, they might have been.

Many date back to the late 1600s like this one, which is right at the center of München.

If you zoom in on the statue, you get a better idea. This one is said to be at the geographical center of München and all roads lead away from this point.

An interesting set of features. The Virgin Mary, a baby Jesus, a scepter of some kind and standing on an unhappy crescent moon.

Our friend tells us that no one knows what any of this means anywhere. not in the usual literature and certainly no university prof. or purveyor of the narrative has any idea what these things means.

I suppose that means they will be removed soon, despite having been there since the 1500s.

I suppose in a way, this can be thought of as the German equivalent of the classical tradition of iconic art  known as The Pietà, except with the added element of the scepter and the unhappy crescent moon.

They must have a crescent moon. It must have a face, And it must be unhappy.

One wonders why a solidly iconic figure would be portrayed as standing on an unhappy crescent moon’s face in and around the 1500s and 1600s in Germany.

It may be impossible to figure that out. There is, as German art profs insist, “there is simply no way to know.”

And yet there it is all over German art in that period, and represented in magnificent statuary all over Germany.

The moon face on the top image seems to be wearing a cap of some kind.

But that cannot possibly have anything to do with the meaning of the imagery.

Riemenschneider

No doubt just an ancient teutonic custom from the renaissance with no actual meaning whatsoever to be discarded ad abandoned with last week’s milk. The cost of making these must have been the ransom of a Sultan though, if Europeans where the sort of folks who took Sultans hostage and ransomed them. So it must have meant something to them at the time.

Perhaps if enough grant money is found, and all arts schools can be funded enough to destroy all the research, its possible that the meaning of the unhappy crescent moon with a sad face and a sort of cap on can be forgotten forever in case the facts of history may offend those people currently in the process of rewriting it all.

Short clip from Robert Spencer’s event last night in Ottawa

The entire speech and Q&A will be edited and uploaded at some point over the next few days but for the moment I wanted to post a bit of a teaser.

One man asked a question which contained nearly every canard about Islamic history we are spoon fed by the useful idiots on a near daily basis from the ‘golden age of Al-Andaluz’ to the bringing of the Enlightenment to we “savages in Europe” by Islamic scholars.

Robert deals with them all in on succinct answer.

The rest of Robert’s superb presentation and the Q&A, which was of unusually high calibre, will be available over the weekend.

Muslims and leftists object to celebrating the defense of Western civilization from Islamic invasion in history

This is stunning. Its like something the Python gang would have done in the 70s.

Yes you see this right. The legend of the Croissant, which may or may not be true but should be, is a source of ‘Islamophobia’ and yet the Muslims had laid seige to Vienna and were intending to sack and look at rape and kill its residents as they did to Constantinople and then on to the rest of Europe. This is horrifying historical revisionism.

Muslims in Constantinople stage massive protest to turn the Hagia Sophia into a mosque

Article and photos here

Hundreds of people demanded that the historic Istanbul Hagia Sophia museum be converted into a mosque during a rally in Istanbul on May 24.
People gathered outside Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia, in the historical Sultanahmet district, with some carrying signs that read: “Hagia Sophia needs to be reopened as a mosque,” and “Let our lives be sacrificed for Islam.”

The protest was led by many Turkish nongovernmental organizations, including the Humanitarian Relief Foundation (?HH).

Denmark – Suggestion tabled for outright Censure in a proposed new anti-terror law

This is an original translation from Danish media by Liberty Dk.

Foreword by translator:

Apparently we Danes are to be legally blindfolded in the name of the war on terror.

In an article in today’s Danish daily newspaper MetroExpress, the following article can be found (see translation below).  Apparently the powers-that-be cannot tell the difference between people sharing information about what is really happening in the world vs. actually inciting and wanting to engage in terror…which of course, to a rational person, clearly is two different things entirely.  To this end they furthermore propose to use the Child Porn filter.

To sum it up…a person actively engaged in trying to warn the Western world about the numerous atrocities perpetrated in the name of Islam would, by law, be put in the very same box as either a terrorist or a person inciting to terror.

The press it seems would be getting a free pass in this regard.  We are apparently only to see those sanitized news blips the media chose for us to see.

Sadly, what is even more absurd is that, according to an on-going MetroExpress poll, most people agree.

Guess I’ll be going to the slammer!

SF wants to prohibit the sharing of terrorist videos

In a proposal which will be presented this week, the Socialist People’s Party (SF) will be tabling a suggestion which makes it illegal to share videos of terrorist attacks and beheadings.  In several terrorism cases in Denmark there has been found, on hard disks and smartphones, videos of Al Qaeda’s terror and IS beheadings.

“It must be explicitly forbidden to share these horrific videos. We will also want ISPs to censor incitement to terror.  To this end the idea the suggestion is that the child pornography filter can be taken into use so that it blocks access to sites with videos of executions and incitement to terror”, says the Chairman of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, Karina Lorentzen (SF), who, however, wants to make an exception for the press.

SF further proposes that the National Police Cyber ??Crime Center monitors the network and go after Danes who praise and incite terrorism.

The Child porn filter is a collaboration between telephone companies and police that stops people who want to go to pages with sexual images of children. The telecommunication industry would like to discuss the possibility of using this tool.

“Execution Videos are awful and disgusting, and I understand as such also the thoughts behind the proposal”, writes director Jacob Willer, stressing that it will require careful consideration, since it pretty much amounts to censorship.

Both the Danish People’s Party (DF) Group Chairman Peter Skaarup and the Consersvative supports SF’s proposal. It is a proposal that we can fully support, says the Conservatives Mai Mercado.

While Liberal Karsten Lauritzen believes that the law is already sufficient. “We just need the right to make some cases to see if it should be allowed to share these video’s”.

[Editor comment: At the end of World War II then Supreme Allied commander Eisenhower ordered that the Nazi atrocities be well documented in order that:

Eisenhower, upon finding the victims of the death camps, ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and even made to bury the dead. He wrote the following to General Marshall after visiting a German internment camp near Gotha, Germany:

The visual evidence and the verbal testimony of starvation, cruelty and bestiality were so overpowering as to leave me a bit sick. In one room, where they [there] were piled up twenty or thirty naked men, killed by starvation, George Patton would not even enter. He said that he would get sick if he did so. I made the visit deliberately, in order to be in a position to give first-hand evidence of these things if ever, in the future, there develops a tendency to charge these allegations merely to “propaganda”.[21]

We should all make it our business to save and catalogue every video we can from the Islamic State in order that the horrors and rationale behind these horrors cannot be dismissed or denied.we do this although we  do not have to watch them all to spare our own psyches from damage. But it is a crime against history to prevent people from knowing the facts of this scale of barbarity and the motives for it. And I also affirm that knowing what Islam does to human beings and why damages them more than any 1 in a million deranged muslims that may join their cause

Sovereignty, the Dome of the Rock, and one Israeli elected representative, Moshe Feiglin

Article by CB Sashenka:

The area known as the Temple Mount at the top of Mount Moriah in Jerusalem, was the site where the First Jewish Temple was built over 3,000 years ago (957 BC) by King David’s son King Solomon. King David made Jerusalem the capital of Israel in 1003 BC. The Temple was destroyed in 586 BC by the Babylonians, was rebuilt in 516 BC, and destroyed again in 70 AD by the Romans.

Since 70 AD, the first mass Jewish pilgrimage near the mount was allowed to take place after the Six-Day War in 1967 (a war that Israel fought in self-defense and won against the neighbouring states of Egypt, Syria and Jordan, all preparing to obliterate Israel), when Israel took back its holiest site, the 36-acre Temple Mount in East Jerusalem (Israel’s ancient capital) from Jordan. Not only did Israel allow Muslims to worship there (as opposed to the Muslims who forbade Jews to worship there when the Temple Mount was under Muslim control), but then-Israeli Defense Minister Dayan entrusted administrative control of the Temple Mount to the Jordanian Waqf (the Islamic authority in Jerusalem). Overall security control of the area was maintained by Israel.

In the First and Second Jewish Temples, the holiest spot was the “Holy of Holies”, built around the “Foundation Stone” where the binding of Isaac by Abraham to sacrifice him to God, and other religious events in Judaism, were believed to have taken place. This is where the Ark of the Convenant (containing the 10 Commandments) was placed in the First Temple.

Over the centuries, Muslims who eventually took control of Christian Jerusalem (and who neither made Jerusalem a capital of a Muslim area nor a province of a Muslim empire) built a shrine, the gold-topped Dome of the Rock in 691 AD, less than 60 years after Mohammed’s death, on the site where Solomon’s Temple once stood, over the Holy of Holies. The Al Aqsa mosque was also built (705 AD) on the Temple Mount.

It is a common Islamic custom to build mosques on the sites of other people’s sacred places after being conquered, in order to emphasize the superiority of Islam over other religions, and to give the city an Islamic identity. Many churches, synagogues, and Hindu, Buddhist and Zoroastrian temples have been converted into mosques.

The fact that The Dome of the Rock was built in Jerusalem on the Temple Mount and over the Holy of Holies, asserts that Islam has replaced Judaism. And the 600-foot inscription in the dome that consists of several koranic passages challenging the Christian belief in the trinity and the divinity of Christ, asserts that Islam has also replaced Christianity:

“People of the Book (the Bible), overstep not bounds in your religion and of God, speak only truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, is only an apostle of God and His word which He conveyed to Mary and a Spirit proceeding from Him. Believe therefore in God and his apostles and say not ‘Three.’ It will be better for you. God is only one God. Far be it from His glory that He should have a son. His is whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And God is a sufficient Guardian. The Messiah does not disdain being a servant of God nor do the angels who are near Him. And all who disdain His service are filled with pride. God will gather them all to Himself” (64:1, 33:54, 4:169-171).

Part of one of the verses inscribed says: “the true religion of God is with Islam” (3:16-17).

Around three years ago, the Dome of the Rock area became inaccessible to non-Muslims. And the Israeli government currently enforces a ban on non-Muslim prayer on the Temple Mount to accommodate Islam. Non-Muslims who are observed praying on the site are subject to expulsion by the police.

Notice how, in the aerial view below of the Temple Mount area, the Dome of the Rock stands out. It was meant to stand out, to dwarf or obliterate any trace of other religious structures, just as the Waqf’s archaeological excavations at Judaism’s holiest site are destroying ancient Jewish antiquities and artifacts – in other words, destroying all evidence of an ancient Jewish presence in Jerusalem.

In the same way, the Taliban erased the Buddhist past of Afghanistan in 2001 by blowing up the world’s two largest standing sandstone Buddhas carved into the hillside 1700 years ago (one of them 165 feet high). Palestinians desecrated and vandalized Joseph’s Tomb in Shechem/Nablus many times, attempting to rebuild it as a mosque, and still refer to Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem as a mosque. Turkey’s Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Spain’s Cordoba Cathedral, and Greece’s Parthenon in Athens were converted into mosques. The intention is to erase every sign, remnant, and memory of a pre-Islamic past.

Fire at St Andrew’s Church, Twyford, possible ‘hate crime’

The location of the fire in the vestry The fire started on a medieval oak chest in the church’s vestry

A suspected arson attack at a church is being investigated by police as a possible hate crime.

It is thought a rare Bible was thrown on to the fire which was started in the vestry of St Andrew’s Church, in Twyford, Derbyshire, on Wednesday.

Damage estimated at £5,000 was caused and church warden Anne Bennett said the congregation found it very distressing.

A 23-year-old man, from Allestree, was arrested in connection with the blaze and has since been released on bail.

Egypt Shoots Tourism Industry in the Foot

Luxor

Handing over control of a tourist hotspot to a party that loathes tourists is asking for trouble, but that’s exactly what Egypt has just done. On Sunday, President Morsi appointed Adel al-Khayat of the Gamaa al-Islamiyya party as Governor of Luxor, a region home to the ruins of two temples and several monuments, widely known as the “open air museum.”  The party, Gamaa al-Islamiyya, not only holds conservative views against sunbathing, women wearing shorts, and alcohol, but is also responsible for the 1997 attack in Luxor that killed 60 tourists. The New York Times reports:

(What isn’t mentioned in this article is how islam views all things that exist prior to the time of islamic supremacy as leftover from a time of ignorance and religious muslims feel its a worthy thing to destroy all archeological evidence of same. Notice how many Churches and Synagogues there are in Saudi Arabia for example, a country that was entirely Jewish, Christian and Animist before Mohamed started his killing spree.)

Erdogan calls Christian Byzantium “a dark chapter” in history

Remember. Byzantium was actually built by the Byzantines. The main city, and a massive concentration of logic, reason and a repository of all classical thought was the city of Constantinople, named after the first Christian Emperor of Rome. So what Erdogan says would be laughable if it wasn’t so pernicious. Wars have been fought over less and sometimes even should have been. Also that Constantinople became Istanbul because of a  siege and consequent series of actions that would be called a ‘War-Crime’ by any standard except Islamic.

Pravoslavie.Ru

Istanbul, May 30, 2013

The prime minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called the time of Christian emperors in Byzantium “a dark chapter” in history. In Erdogan’s view, in the fifteenth century, after invasion of Constantinople by Muslims, began “the time of enlightenment,” reports Kath.net.

The speech of the conservative Turkish prime minister was made during the laying of the foundation of the new road bridge over the Bosphorus in Istanbul that took place on May 29–the anniversary of Ottoman invasion of the Byzantine empire 1453.

“We are continuing to write the history today,” said Erdogan during the ceremony.

The Turkish authorities have celebrated the anniversary of the victory over Byzantium by a series of festivities.

Egyptians grab ancient land of the pharaohs to bury their dead

Guardian.UK:

Archaeologists fear for pyramid sites as illegal building gathers pace in wake of Arab spring

An archaeologist looks into a fresh tomb

An archaeologist inspects a new cemetery illegally built near the Black Pyramid at Dahshur.

In Manshiet Dahshur, 25 miles south of Cairo, the villagers recently extended the boundaries of the cemetery. For Ahmed Rageb, a carpenter who buried his cousin in the annexe, it was a logical decision. “We want to bury the dead,” he said, strolling through the new cemetery after visiting his cousin’s tomb. “The old cemetery is full. And there is no other place to bury my family.”

There is just one problem. The new tombs are perilously close to some of Egypt‘s oldest: the pyramids of Dahshur, less famous than their larger cousins at Giza, but just as venerable. This is protected land, and no one is supposed to build here – yet more than 1,000 illegal tombs have appeared in the desert since January.

Court: Museum must be converted to mosque

HagiaSophia

Art history experts are expressing alarm at a court ruling in Turkey that the 13th century Church of Hagia Sophia – which has been a museum and contains irreplaceable examples of its time period – must be converted to a mosque.

The situation has been detailed by the art experts at The Art Newspaper.

There, Andrew Finkel wrote that the famous structure in Trabzon, a city along the Black Sea, will be converted to a mosque following an extended battle over its use.

Finkel is alarmed, however, because “many in Turkey believe that the Church of Hagia Sophia is a stalking horse for the possible re-conversion of its more famous namesake in Istanbul, the Hagia Sophia Museum.”

“A building covenanted as a mosque cannot be used for any other purpose,” Mazhar Yildirimham, of the General Directorate of Pious Foundations, said in the report. The organization made the claim that the structure is “an inalienable part of the foundation of Sultan Mehmed II,” who reportedly originally took over the church building and turned it into a mosque in 1462.

UNESCO silent as Hamas bulldozes world heritage site for terrorist training camp

U.N.Watch:

GENEVA, April 15 –
In an urgent letter sent today to UNESCO director-general Irina Bokova (see letter below), UN Watch demanded immediate action to stop the Hamas bulldozing of a 3000-year-old Gaza harbor for use as a terrorist training camp, asreported today by Al Monitor Palestine Pulse. A copy was also sent to EU foreign minister Catherine Ashton calling on the EU to take action.

The partial destruction of the ancient Anthedon Harbor—which includes the ruins of a Roman temple and archaeological remains from the Persian, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras—comes exactly one year after the area was nominated by new UNESCO member state Palestine as a World Heritage site.

UN Watch, an independent Geneva-based monitoring group, called on Bokova to bring the issue before the UNESCO executive board now meeting in Paris.

Although the biannual UNESCO meeting, which runs until April 26, lists five agenda items concerning Palestinian issues—which US Ambassador Killion has described as “highly politicized” and designed to “single out Israel”—there is currently no scheduled discussion to address the month-long Hamas bulldozing of the proposed heritage site. UN Watch’s letter as sent today to Ms. Bokova and Lady Ashton follows below.

PETA and BDS now about equally low on the morally repugnant scale.

Remember this PETA advert? Well now BDS, (boycott, divest, sanction) anti Israel organizations have managed to sink to the same disgusting level. Actually worse. While PETA claims that there is a moral equivalence between the Nazi Holocaust and a chicken dinner at least they told the truth about where the pictures they used in their campaign came from.

The BDS people show the same pictures. Of masses and masses of murdered Jews, Gypsies, Gay people, Catholics and anti-regime activists but mostly Jews and claimed it was Palestinians killed by Israelis.

BDS claims Holocaust pics are Palestinians killed by Israelis

BDS claims Holocaust pics are Palestinians killed by Israelis

I don’t even know if there is a proper term for this sort of action. But if my respect could fall any farther for the people who staff the BDS movement, it would have now.

‘Derogatory’ Champollion statue in Paris angers Egyptians

Statue of Jean François Champollion, who deciphered hieroglyphics, provokes criticism 135 years after it was placed in Collège de France in Paris

Champollion

A statue in Paris of Jean François Champollion, the French archaeologist who deciphered hieroglyphics, has been condemned as “derogatory” and “shameful” by Egyptian Egyptologists.

Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi carved the marble statue depicting Champollion standing with his left foot on a pharaonic head in 1875.

It was put on display in the Parc Egyptian created by French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette for the Universal Exhibition of 1877.

It was originally intended to be transported to Figeac, the birthplace of Champollion, but the project did not find sufficient support and it remained in Paris. In 1878, the statue was placed in its current location in the courtyard of the Collège de France.
