U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, Arizona Public Media reported Saturday.

The 40-year-old Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a “Congress on Your Corner” event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

At least nine other people, including members of her staff, were hurt. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known.

Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up and fired indiscriminately from about four feet away, Michaels said.

The suspect ran off and was tackled by a bystander. He was taken into custody. Witnesses described him as in his late teens or early 20s.

Giffords was first elected to represent Arizona’s 8th District in 2006. The “Congress on Your Corner” events allow constituents to present their concerns directly to her.

More details to come.

Envelope ignites at Washington DC postal facility

I guess it could be a diamond filled bomb and then probably the damn Hasidim Jews, or maybe a pro-biotic bomb with billions and billions of digestive bacteria in each explosion and we could point vigorously at the Jain’s. But something tells me its another religious group doing this one.

New York Post:

WASHINGTON — Police said a package has ignited this afternoon at a D.C. postal facility, a day after two fiery packages were opened in Maryland.

D.C. Officer Hugh Carew does not know if the package is similar to the two that ignited at Maryland state government buildings Thursday.

Carew says the package ignited at 2:45 p.m. There are no reports of any injuries.

The building has been evacuated and no injuries have been reported.

FBI spokeswoman: initial info shows DC package that ignited is similar to fiery Maryland parcels.

On Thursday, two packages sent to Maryland’s governor and transportation secretary that ignited when they were opened contained the same note railing against highway signs urging motorists to report suspicious activity, investigators revealed today. Continue Reading →

Packages Set Off at Md. State Buildings

From WTOP:

WASHINGTON – Two incidents involving packages at Maryland state buildings have shut down mail room operations in government offices across the state.

One package was at the Jeffrey Building in downtown Annapolis and another was at the Maryland Department of Transportation headquarters in Hanover.

A law enforcement source tells CBS News the package in Annapolis was addressed to Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley at the governor’s mansion, but was taken to the state offices.

The packages created smoke and an odor when they were opened, and CBS reports one flamed up while the other fizzled. Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley says the packages were small, describing them as about the size of a book.

Police say there were no serious injuries, although a spokesman for Annapolis Mayor Joshua J. Cohen says a mail room employee was hurt in the Annapolis incident. The extent of the employee’s injury was not immediately known.

State agencies have ceased all mail operations until hazardous materials crews can investigate and it’s determined if any other packages have been sent.

WTOP will have more information as it becomes available.

DOUGLAS MURRAY: Warning to the US: Don’t Play by Islamic Rules

This is a truly excellent piece of work by a man who I grow more and more to admire as one of the great intellectuals of the day. Douglas Murray appeared with Ayaan Hirsi Ali on the IQ2 debate, ‘Is Islam a religion of peace’ and was excellent. But this piece is superb. If you read nothing else today, read this. Thank you Fred for sending it to me. This is nectar for a thirsty mind.

From Standpoint Mag

By Douglas Murray

What was your first reaction back in May when you heard of plans to build a mega-mosque near the site of the Twin Towers in New York? Did you assume it was a tasteless joke? Did your jaw drop? Or did you think: “What a good idea. No better place.”

My bet would be that most readers (including self-described liberal readers) had a touch more of the former reaction than the latter. Some people even said so at the time. A number of families of 9/11 victims spoke out against the building and for a few weeks the idea of a 13-storey mosque complex beside the World Trade Centre craters, due to cost £68 million yet with no known financial backer, seemed a dead duck.

So how was it that within a few months many of those same people, most notably the most loudly self-declared liberals, were not merely advocating the building of that same mosque but in many cases seemed eager to build it themselves, finally depicting its construction as the sine qua non of America’s survival? The distance between first and second instincts is always illuminating. But this one turns out to be more than usually so. Public debates in America tend to happen rougher, faster and more ferociously than they do in most of Europe. And so it was that a heated debate over one hot summer transformed a planning dispute into something far larger and more significant.

Daisy Khan: Wife of the Imam of the proposed Ground Zero mosque has claimed to be a victim

It was at the beginning of August that the Mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg stood with the Statue of Liberty in the background to make a major announcement. The planning regulations surrounding the former Burlington Coat Factory on 45-51 Park Place, had already met opposition at the community board advisory level. National polls suggested that a majority of Americans were opposed to the building of what was then called Cordoba House, a couple of blocks from Ground Zero. But Bloomberg thought differently. Surrounded by the requisite collective of religiously-attired figures, Bloomberg declared that restrictive planning laws of New York would not be allowed to stand in the way of the planned mosque. The debate was not about a planning application any longer. It was about something more, he declared. It was about America.

In his often teary-eyed speech, Bloomberg exercised the now decade-long tendency to believe that al-Qaeda meant whatever you want them to have meant when they destroyed the Twin Towers. Bloomberg declared: “Three thousand people were killed because some murderous fanatics didn’t want us to enjoy the freedom to profess our own faiths, to speak our own minds, to follow our own dreams and to live our own lives.” The issue, he said, was “as important  a test of the separation of church and state as we may see in our lifetime”. And it wasn’t a test he intended to fail. Expressing his support for the construction of the mosque, he said: “The community centre and mosque will add to the life and vitality of the neighbourhood and the entire city.”

President Barack Obama appeared to enter the debate on Bloomberg’s side when he raised the matter at a Muslim iftar (post-fast) dinner at the White House. “This is America,” he confirmed indignantly. The next day, he changed tack in the face of a popular uproar, and claimed that he had not in fact made the statement he appeared to have made, but had instead carefully avoided making any statements about the wisdom of building anything anywhere.

Despite Obama’s phantom U-turn, by the end of the summer the liberal consensus appeared to be with Bloomberg. After further negative opinion polls, Bloomberg declared that those opposed to the mosque “ought to be ashamed of themselves”, adding: “To cave to popular sentiment would be to hand a victory to the terrorists.” Al-Qaeda had attacked the World Trade Centre and as a result it was now vital that America reply by building a mosque.

Other politicians were not as distrustful as Bloomberg was of popular sentiment. In mid-August, Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker, said on air: “Nazis don’t have the right to put up a sign next to the Holocaust museum in Washington…We would never accept the Japanese putting up a site next to Pearl Harbour.” Gingrich’s intervention allowed mainstream politicians respectfully to oppose the construction. But by then another element of the debate had emerged. It was one which points to perhaps the largest difference between the European and American debate on this issue. Continue Reading →

The Queen and the Somali plot from Klein Verzet

In her Christmas speech, Queen Beatrix told people to show solidarity with others in society. She said we should try to find a good balance between ‘us’ and ‘them’. Fear and suspicion could be vanquished if people adopted a social perspective. She urged people to involve each other in solving problems and stressed that we all belong to a single society in which every individual needs to feel safe.

The danger exists that what we have in common is ignored while differences and contrasts are exaggerated. We should be ready to recognise our own prejudices and consider the consequences of our behaviour for others and for society as a whole. Her majesty said we should treat others the way we’d like them to treat us.

These high-minded thoughts were nullified immediately afterward by the news that 12 Somali suspects of plotting a terror attack had been arrested in Rotterdam and Gilze-Rijen. Apparently, they were planning to shoot down an Apache attack helicopter at Gilze-Rijen airforce base, home of 85 of such aircraft.

In the mean time all but one of the suspects have been released. The expectations are that all will be free (NL) in the immediate future for lack of (admissible) evidence.

But there is something fishy about the group of suspects…

City of L.A. goose steps to Islamic narrative

Check this article by Weasel Zippers. Infuriating is one word for it. Chasing bad legislation with worse legislation would be close to the mark and why I am against a burka ban. Asking governments to solve problems they created by bad, freedom destroying legislation with more of the same creates a number of possible results none of which, is a solution to the initial problem. In any case, expect this kind of CAIR promoted legislation in a town near you.

Somali Islamist insurgents threaten US attack

Yahoo News:

By MOHAMED SHIEKH NOR, Associated Press Mohamed Shiekh Nor, Associated Press – 1 hr 29 mins ago

MOGADISHU, Somalia – A leader of Somalia’s Islamist insurgency threatened to attack America during a speech broadcast Monday.

“We tell the American President Barack Obama to embrace Islam before we come to his country,” said Fuad Mohamed “Shongole” Qalaf.

Al-Shabab has not yet launched an attack outside Africa but Western intelligence has long been worried because the group targeted young Somali-Americans for recruitment. About 20 have traveled to Somalia for training and at least three were used as suicide bombers inside Somalia. Al-Shabab holds most of southern and central Somalia and has the support of hundreds of foreign fighters, mostly radicalized East Africans. Continue Reading →

CBN on Fort Hood

This clip is from September 2010 but I believe it is important to not let Fort Hood slide down the memory hole. The cause of the Fort Hood shooting has not been addressed, so its only a matter of time till it happens again. Thanks KitmanTV for capturing the clip and bringing it to my attention

Far leftists storm grocery stores to have Israeli foods banned

I so wish they would pull this stunt in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia

By the way, Sabra brand Humus is really really good. Go pick up some, especially the Supremely Spicy’ one and the roasted Garlic is awesome. I think they are made in New York as well, not 100% sure on that though.

An update:

Here is a similar tactic done by a bunch of Muslims about Israeli products at a TESCO. What is interesting here are the tactics. First, they go to a store that they know has Israeli goods. Then, they fill a shopping cart with them, then, they clog up the checkout line at Tesco while they complain about what they found, that they already knew was there, and then blame the slow checkout on the people waiting to serve them and the people behind them in line while accusing them of racism.

This stunt made the people doing it, the ‘Muslim Public Affairs Committee’ look so bad, they had to insert text captions to try and direct the viewer to be angry at the target instead of the people pulling this stunt.

Sound familiar? It seems an awful lot like the entire culture of the ‘Palestinians’
