TOULOUSE, France | Wed Jun 20, 2012 8:05am EDT

(Reuters) – A man claiming to be a member of al Qaeda was holding several people hostage in a bank in the southwestern French city of Toulouse on Wednesday, including the bank manager, police officials said on Wednesday.

The man took the hostages in a branch of French bank CIC around mid-morning and fired a shot after an attempted armed robbery apparently went wrong, UNSA police union official Cedric Delage said.

Two other police sources said there were four hostages in the latest drama to hit the Toulouse region since a young al Qaeda-inspired gunman shot dead three soldiers, a rabbi and three Jewish children in March.

“We don’t know yet exactly what this individual wants, but it seems to be an armed robbery that went wrong,” Delage said.

Killed gendarmes in the Var: The suspect admits the facts

Translated by Michael Laudahn:

BFMTV:

The conference of the Toulon prosecutor has permitted to learn more about the circumstances of the double-murder of the two female gendarmes, committed sunday evening in the Var.

The first capital information is the acknowledgement by the alleged killer of the two gendarmes of the facts he is blamed with. He has admitted to be the author of the shots, and to have taken the two service arms of his victims. Also, it is established that the suspect was drunken in the moment of the act. According to the prosecutor, he planned the second murder.

At the occasion of his arrest, the man did not use the weapons which he took from his victims. Known by the police service, he had been sentenced for drugs, theft and violence/rape [french ‘violence’ can mean both parts] laws. At the age of 30, he left prison in september, after 6 months of detention. Last week, he had been condemned to a punishment on probation for violence comitted against his mother.

The individual arrested sunday night is suspected to have killed Alicia Champlon, a 29-year old adjudante, and Audrey Berthaut, maréchal des logis-chef aged 35, mother of two daughters, 5 and 13 years. The two women, stationed at Pierrefeu (Var), had intervened in order to sort out an argument following the theft of a handbag.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the suspect at first shot two rounds at Audrey Berthaut, a fact considered ‘murder’, before following her colleague and shooting six rounds in her direction, emphasised the prosecutor. In this second case, ‘a planned volition to kill, thus assassination’, can be maintained agaianst the suspect.

The killer of the two french policewomen was, of course, a man from the Maghreb – freshly released from prison.

Edited by Gates of Vienna:
The report about the French cop-killer was all over the news this morning, but none of the English-language bulletins mentioned his ethnicity or gave his name. It was necessary to open the French news sites to find the name “Abdallah Boumezar”.

There were also Spanish-language reports that included the culturally enriched aspects of the case. Our Spanish correspondent Hermes sends this summary from Alerta Digital:

The killer of the two French policewomen was, of course, a man from the Maghreb — freshly released from prison.

Abdallah Boumezar, the man suspected of having murdered the two policewomen in the village of Collobrieres, has confessed that he was the one who shot and killed Alicia Champion and Audrey Berthaut, the two French police officers. This 30-year-old man from the Maghreb was released from prison last September after having served a sentence of six years.

Last week he was sentenced to liberty under probation for having attacked his mother. The two policewomen had gone to the scene because of an alleged case of burglary. The confessed assassin shot Audrey Berthaut twice, and afterwards began to run after Alicia Champion, shooting at her six times at point-blank range.

Here’s more about the case in French.

Three women on flight from Doha barred from entering France after refusing to remove their face veils

A police union says three Saudi women who refused to remove their face veils at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport have been barred entry to France.

A 2011 French law bans people from wearing Islamic face-covering veils anywhere in public.

An official with the SGP-FO police union said today that border police asked the women to remove their veils after they arrived Monday on a flight from Doha, Qatar.

The official says the women refused, border police refused them entry in France, and they returned to Doha last night.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly for the police.

Supporters of the ban say the veil contradicts France’s principles of secularism and women’s rights. Some Muslim groups say it stigmatises moderate Muslims.

Nicolas Sarkozy’s government introduced a ban on all forms of Islamic head coverings, including the niqab and the burka, last year.

Islamic-rights campaigners said it was ‘unconstitutional’ but Mr Sarkozy said the ban was not aimed at persecuting Muslims, merely part of an effort to make France a more tolerant, inclusive society.

When it was introduced, he said the ban was aimed at stopping criminals – from terrorists to shoplifters – disguising their faces from security staff and CCTV.

Mohamed Benalel Merah said in March that he wanted to sue the RAID elite police unit that shot dead his son on March 22 during a shoot-out at the end of a 32-hour siege at his flat in the southern French city.

The 23-year-old had shot dead three soldiers, and three children and a teacher at a Jewish school, in a wave of killings that shocked the country.

He filmed himself carrying out the attacks and reportedly confessed to police before he was shot dead.

“This is a suit against unnamed persons for murder with aggravating circumstances concerning those who gave the orders at the top of the police” during the assault on Merah’s flat in Toulouse, said lawyer Isabelle Coutant-Peyre.

“You’ve got 300 to 400 heavily armed people and a guy shut up all alone in his apartment. That alone is enough to raise questions,” said Ms Coutant-Peyre, who is part of Merah’s legal team headed by Algerian lawyer Zahia Mokhtari.

Man ‘attacked Jewish youths with hammer’

Funny how they have all these guys in custody and do not name a single one, isn’t it? One would almost think they were trying to shield the public from the dogma and resultant actions of Islam.

H/T Hermes

From The Local France:

A young man suspected of having attacked a group of Jewish youths with a hammer turned himself over to police on Thursday but denied involvement in the assault in Lyon, a police source said.

The man, aged about 20, was one of five people in police custody as of Thursday evening as police continued investigating Saturday’s attack.

The victims – aged 18, 23 and 24 and all wearing Jewish skullcaps – were attacked as they left a service at a Jewish school in the east-central city.

Police have said a group jostled and insulted the victims, then about 10 other assailants armed with hammers and bars joined in.

The main suspect denied having used a hammer, but authorities think he did, the source said.

Civil liberties groups and leading political figures including the French prime minister have condemned the attack.

The victims were recovering after being treated briefly in hospital.

While doing an election campaign walkabout in Sartrouville (in the outskirts of Paris) accompanied by the area’s deputy mayor, Jacques Myard, a member of the French parliament who represents the mainstream conservative UMP, was aggressively accosted by a djellaba-wearing Muslim on a scooter.

You’ve got no place here. This is Arab land. This land belongs to the Muslims. It’s not French soil. You are racists, Zionists. You need to leave!

The MP attempted to continue walking around, talking to the local people and shaking their hands. As he did, the Muslim addressed them:

Don’t shake his hand. He votes for laws against the Arabs. If you shake his hand, I’ll come and burn you.

This was a reference to the MP’s vote for the burka ban. Myard described what followed on his website:

Jewish communal leaders in France say an attack on three Jewish men Saturday night was just the latest in a line of anti-Semitic incidents against the country’s Jews.

“There has been a series of acts like the one in in Villeurbanne,”  said Richard Prasquier, president of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France (CRIF), according to Le Figaro.

Police are still searching for the culprits behind the incident Saturday night near the southern city of Lyon, in which 10 attackers assaulted three 18-year-old Jewish men outside a Jewish center in Villeurbanne. Two of the victims were taken to the hospital after being beaten with a hammer and metal rod.

Police believe the attackers are of North African extraction.

Joël Mergui, president of the Central Consistory, an umbrella organization working to coordinate local Jewish communities, said the country’s Jews were under constant attack. “Not a week passes without anti-Semitic assaults in France. I refuse to believe Jews will be forced to choose between security and their Jewish identity.”

“These incidents are becoming more and more frequent, so much so, alas, as to make one take them for granted,” he said.

Three yarmulke wearing Jewish youths were brutally assaulted on Saturday night by a mob of over a dozen who beat them with hammers and Iron bars. The incident took place in Villeurbanne, near Lyon in southeast France. French blogs reported that the crime was carried out by Islamic youths.

The victims were hospitalized suffering various wounds and were subsequently released according to French newspaper L’Express. Police forces have begun a manhunt in search of the suspects.

On Sunday the Interior Ministry said that they believe the assault to be motivated by antisemitism.

Minister Manuel Valls, denounced the attack in a statement calling the act “extremely serious” and “a deliberate attack against our republican model that should enable everyone, without distinction, to live freely and safely expressing his religious affiliation “.

The assault comes just months following the brutal massacre of four by an Islamic terrorist at a Jewish school in Toulouse.

In reaction to the incident, French Jewish artist Ron Agam told the Algemeiner that, “It is about time now for the French authorities to radically search for these Imams and put a stop to the brainwashing on tens of thousands of Muslim kids in France.”

“It is unacceptable that this culture of racism and antisemitism is being tolerated by a significant number of the Muslim community, this culture must stop,” he concluded.

  • An Islamic holy man and his wife have been jailed for the genital mutilation of their four daughters.

The case has shocked France and was branded by a female government minister as a ‘grave crime’ and an ‘intolerable affront to women’s dignity.’

All four of the victims, now aged between 11 and 20, were in court to hear the sentence and wept and cried out as their parents were led away from the dock.

The unnamed father was sentenced to two years and his wife got 18 months for allowing a ‘doctor’ to remove parts of their vaginas.

They were charged  with ‘complicity in voluntary violence having led to mutilation by an older person  of a minor under the age of 15 years’ , a crime punishable  by a maximum of 20 years jail.

The father was said to be a ‘ marabout’ – an Arabic word for an Islamic ascetic holy man alleged to be endowed with magical powers.

The couple originally came from the west African state of Guinea where according to a 2007 study, 96 per cent of young girls have their genitals mutilated in the name of religion.

They are said to be able to cure illnesses and restore whole communities to wellbeing simply by waving feathers and intoning magical words.

At the trial in Nevers, central France, the two youngest victims had declared themselves plaintiffs under French law but the elder girls withdrew their complaint and sided with their parents.

Nathalie Bouvier-Longeville, a lawyer representing the two youngest sisters told the court: ‘ By what right were the parents able to appropriate parts of their daughters’ bodies?

‘They are loving parents and not monsters. It seems inconceivable that loving parents could have done this’.

The two eldest girls defended their parents action, saying that they did not understand why they were appearing in court.

Sobbing in the witness box , the mother told the court that she now regretted what had happened .

‘Now I would be less passive, ‘ she said. ‘Circumcision is not good.’

The former holy man, said to have been severely handicapped by a stroke, told the judge ,’ What is the most important thing for me is the  wellbeing of my family. I am sorry for what happened.’

Moroccan- born Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, 35, Minister of Women’s Rights in the new government of François Hollande, has now pledged a crackdown on the illegal practice.
